Unreserved Sale Had No Internet Bidding On June 20, Bodnar’s Auction Sales in Edison, N.J., conducted what was among the largest single-owner comic book auctions in recent history. There were over just under 300 lots of quality comics sold, most were sold individually, all unreserved, and with no internet bidding. The owner had started collecting as a child, purchased Bodnar’s auctioneer Tom “Superman” Graves is in the far backthem from news- ground, along with staff members. Putting many of us wish they had that together a collection like this takes story? He was one of the lucky ones, time and resources today. However, which is what makes these comics finding a collection such as this assembled, of important issues, and being able to bring it to market without reserves is like finding a unicorn. This auction brought the buyers out, and the buzz was real. The emails and phone calls started pouring in weeks prior to the sale. Everyone wanted to know where it came from. On sale day, there was a packed house that was standing room only. There were over 400 registered bidders waiting with anticipation for the comic book portion of the sale to The Amazing Fantasy #15 (1962) sold for $36,800. begin. There were also hundreds of absentee bids as well as multiple phone lines for bidders. In an unusual move, there was no internet bidding for the auction. Joseph Bodnar, owner of Bodnar’s Auction Sales, decided to begin with the highlight of the day, a copy of Amazing Fantasy 15, the first appearance of SpiderMan. The bidding began fast and furious, with an inhouse bidder opening the bid at $20,000. Between the large crowd and the bidders on the phone, the bidding quickly jumped to over $30,000. No one was ready to give up easily. It finally This Amazing Spider-Man #1 (1963) sold for $8,337. Continued on page 2

The Game Changer By Shawn Surmick Regular readers of this column know that every year, typically toward the end or beginning of the calendar year, I compile a listing of five upward and downward trending segments within the antiques and collectibles trade. For the past several years I have cautioned collectors, speculators, and casual enthusiasts about spending significant sums on vintage arcade coin-operated video games. The market for acquiring most of these monstrosities has been on a downtrend for some time, and another nail in the proverbial coffin of this collecting genre has just arrived in an unexpected form. Up until recently, collectors of vintage full-size arcade games have had few options if they wanted to bring the actual arcade experience home. While most casual enthusiasts and collectors of home video games were happy playing classic arcade games on newer home consoles, there seemed to be a serious gap in the modern era retro revival of vintage video games that has gained strong momentum in the past few years. This has caused several industrious entrepreneurs to come up with some interesting solutions to bring actual vintage
arcade games into the home. The first development in giving nostalgia-driven gamers their fix of vintage arcade games was to come up with various plug and play devices that connected directly to any modern television set and had several classic and fully licensed arcade games built right into the unit’s controller. A lot of these devices were very affordable, and some did a good job at bringing a glimpse of nostalgia into a retro gamer’s home. That said, most of these devices were cheaply made and considered gimmicky by serious vintage arcade game enthusiasts. They also lacked the ability to bring the feel of the true arcade-like experience home. Then in 2017, rumors of a brand new concept in bringing affordable vintage arcade games into the home began to gain momentum. By 2018, the first of this company’s products were shown to diehard fans. The company, Arcade1Up, would do the unthinkable. They would license full-sized vintage arcade video games of yesterday and repackage them in beautiful three-quarter sized scale arcade game cabinets. Better yet, the company would group together three or four popular vintage arcade games in one easy-to-assemble cabinet that would retail for about $299 and be available at your
favorite retailer. Some of the company’s first releases were based directly on popular arcade games of yesteryear. They have a three-quarter sized arcade cabinet version of “Pac-Man” that also contains the game “Pac-Man Plus” and several cabinets that contain classic Atari games as well. And these were just the company’s very first releases. When Arcade1Up products were first announced, I know of a lot of hardcore collectors of original vintage arcade video games who thought the products may just be a passing fad, but now as we delve deeper into 2019, and more incredible arcade offerings have been announced, most serious collectors of vintage standup arcade games are worried this innovation is killing demand for their beloved coin-op games. Arcade1Up’s newest arcade cabinet announced in secret at the Electronic Entertainment Expo this past June is generating a lot of buzz, as it is a three-quarter arcade cabinet replica that features all three of Atari’s original “Star Wars” games released into arcades in the 1980s. Up until this point, obtaining an original vintage “Star Wars” arcade cabinet from the 1980s was no easy task. Prices hover at around $1,200 for a full working arcade cabinet, and finding replacement parts for the specialized built-in flight yoke controller can be quite frustrating. Being able to secure a
three-quarter replica cabinet that contains all three classic “Star Wars” games built in a replica standalone arcade cabinet is breathing new life into these games and causing more enthusiasts to purchase Arcade1Up products than the actual vintage arcade games of yesteryear. This is now wreaking havoc in the vintage coin-operated video game collecting realm. Arcade1Up has even ventured into reproducing some of the most popular arcade titles from the 1990s, with a “Mortal Kombat Trilogy” machine already available at most retailers for $299.99. The device features “Mortal Kombat,” “Mortal Kombat 2,” and “Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3,” all ready to play in a miniaturized version of the original. You just plug it in any electrical outlet and choose your game, and the game is displayed on a built-in crystal clear LCD monitor. It is just like playing the actual arcade game that was released into the arcades in the early 1990s. It even uses the actual joysticks and buttons made for the arcade. I am always fascinated by newer technologies that impact the market for older obscure collectibles. These kinds of developments have been happening often in the over-hyped and over-speculated vintage video game and computer market. Nintendo released an excellent version of their NES and Super NES systems in mini form that

great for the retro gamer or collector with limited space and a limited budget, but it still does not compare to the real thing. However, these collectors are not being honest with how the market is changing, in my humble opinion. This should serve as a great reminder about how even collectors of vintage items need to be abreast of all the latest trends in the antiques and collectibles marketplace. For one thing is sure, the market is always changing. It doesn’t matter if that market is five years old or 50. Now back to gaming on my new Arcade1Up Final Fight machine. When they release that new “Star Wars” arcade cabinet, I just may not have a reason to leave my house. Until next time.

each contained several popular built-in games. The release and availability of these systems caused a lot of the original cartridge-based games that were built into these systems to fall on the secondary market as a result for their mass market release. Collectors of vintage video games and related items need to understand that the market for these items is ever changing, and as more and more technologies and innovative entrepreneurs work to find creative ways to release a lot of the classic games of yesteryear, speculators should use extreme caution when entering this market. I personally know several collectors of full-sized vintage arcade games who are now getting out of the market for these items altogether and instead choosing to buy Arcade1Up replicas of these games. Still, some collectors and hardcore enthusiasts remain skeptical of Arcade1Up’s effect on the vintage arcade game market as collectibles. As more than one collector told me, Arcade1Up’s entries are

The Grist Mill Antiques Center in Pemberton, N.J., is celebrating America with a new patriotic display the whole month of July. Portraits of the founding fathers, vintage flags, military memorabilia and an Uncle Sam mechanical bank stand proudly alongside sculpture of the Liberty Bell, Statue of Liberty and the American bald eagle in the special sales case. Since 1782, the American bald eagle has graced the Great Seal of the United States. Chosen as a steadfast symbol of the enduring independence, strength and freedom of our nation, the eagle appears on everything from currency to military insignias. The Grist Mill has been renovating and updating displays to make way for new dealers. In June, the multidealer shop welcomed SK Vintage, who specializes in vintage kitchen, dining, serving and glassware with an emphasis on mid-century modern. SK Vintage has created a colorful space including finds from the icon of American Modern design Russel Wright, as well as Jadeite, Pyrex, American pottery and more. For those interested in becoming a Grist Mill dealer, there are a couple spaces, both small and large, available. Contact Barbara Lind at 609-726-1588 or via email at theplace@gristmill antiques.com.

Cabin Fever Turns To Bidding Fever At Rich Penn Sale The annual Spring Rich Penn auction event seemed like it was spring in name only. The April 26, 27, and 28 auction in Waterloo, Iowa, had a special gift from Mother Nature. Saturday’s session witnessed four inches of snow. But those in attendance weren’t hampered by that. Cabin fever quickly turned to bidding fever. The large sale kicked off with over 200 lots of non-cataloged items for in-house bidders only. Auctioneers Fred Van Metre and Tom Millie sailed through those by noon. When the first cataloged lot came to the podium, the house bidders were joined by
registered online bidders from 37 countries. By the end, nearly half of the sale went to online buyers. “We continue to see increased participation from our online clients. But when it comes to some of the more serious items, many bidders want to be here to see it and examine it for themselves,” said Rich Penn. The sale included salesman sample stoves, country store and soda fountain items and pressed steel toys. Two of the top lots were salesman sample stoves. A Home Comfort No. CB, in restored condition, sold for $4,000, and a Quick Meal No. 407-16, also restored, sold for $3,500. Two other stoves that warmed up bidders included the ca. 1900 Karr Range Co., with blue and white enameled finish. In original condition, it sold for $2,750. A ca. 1900 Great Majestic Junior, in restored condition, went for $2,250. Pressed steel toys showed

This country store coffee grinder, counter style, Enterprise No. 8, patented July 12, 1898, cast-iron with original orange paint and decals, eagle finial, 28 inches high, sold for $1,100.

With strong color and overall scratching, it dished up a top bid of $1,000. A ca. 1909 National Cash Register, model No. 327, in original condition, rang up a high bid of $1,300. The top lot was a classic ca. 1941 Paul Fuller designed Wurlitzer model 750E jukebox. Fuller was singlehandedly responsible for designing the 1938-49 line of Wurlitzer 24 selection machines. His designs set the stage for other manufacturers to follow. None did it quite as well as Fuller. As a result, his machines are among the most desirable with today’s collectors. This machine, largely complete but with a few minor issues, still played up to a $5,500 high bid. Another jukebox from Wurlitzer’s rival Rockola was their ca. 1947 model 1426. work. It still hit a high note at $1,800. From pumping out great tunes to pumping gas, bidder interest was good. An Eric Motor Systems clock face pump had an older restoration and pumped out a $3,500 high bid. The American Oil Pump & Tank Co. visible pump, ca. 1920s, brought $1,900, as did the Wayne clock face model 861. A Red Crown Gasoline bulk drum from Standard Oil Indiana, with great graphics, sold for $1,700. In the days of the classic jukeboxes, it wasn’t unusual to see a slot machine or two in the same establishment. Any machines that took in extra money helped the merchant make more profit, so coinoperated machines were in both little towns and big cities across the country. A song could be heard for a nickel. The same for a pack of gum. Or buy a pencil, a soda or take a chance on winning some money. Gambling has an entrenched history in American culture. Many of those coin-operated machines are very collectible. The top selling slot machine was an unusual Watling Rol-A-Top with a Diamond Front jackpot. This

Micro Models Die-Casts From Down Under By Christopher Moor Today, both Australian and New Zealand Micro Models from the 1950s are sought by collectors of miniature toy vehicles in many countries. Micro Models are die-cast metal toys manufactured in Australia from 1952 by Goodwood (Aust.) Pty. Ltd. An exchange of dies (molds) with Lincoln Industries later enabled the models to be made in New Zealand. While circa 1956 is generally accepted as the start of manufacture in New Zealand, some collectors believe the early Micro Models they bought were imports from Australia. They remember buying them during the first royal visit by Queen Elizabeth II in 1953. In 1993, William J Prior, retired executive chairman of Lincoln Playcorp, said that no Micro Models were imported. No records from Lincoln Industries, his previous company, remained for verification. New Zealand’s tax laws require that such documentation be kept for seven years only. Assuming Prior’s memory is correct, 1953 is probably the year production began in New Zealand. The first Micro Models listings in both the Australian and New Zealand catalogs were the Vauxhall Velox saloon, the Holden FX Coupe Utility (pick-up truck) and the Jaguar XK-120. Not all the Micro Models produced in Australia appeared in Lincoln’s New Zealand catalog, and Lincolnmanufactured models were not available in Australia. New Zealand-made Micro Models did not have the baked-enamel paint finish of the Australian models, which meant the paint could be more easily chipped. Other differences are the use of wheels with zinc plated hubcaps on the New Zealand models and, later, their finetread rubber tires. Goodwood’s Australian catalogue numbers appeared on the bases of most New Zealand-produced models and are identifiable either by the GB or G prefixes. Lincoln’s Micro Models came packaged in easily recognised grey and maroon cardboard boxes. The company’s own catalog numbers and logo were added, but
otherwise the boxes appeared much the same as the Australian. The Micro cars were about four inches in length and advertised with a scale ratio of 1:36. They were often nearer 1/43, and sometimes 1/48. A 1/72 scale was given for the Bedford trucks, but the Ford O.H.V.V8 trucks came in 1/48 scale and the Commer trucks in about 1/45. Holden was the first car produced entirely in Australia, and a clue to the Australianorigin of Micro Models is the number of Holden castings. Models of the Holden FJ sedan and its taxi and police car versions were not included in the original New Zealand-made range. This surprises, as the FJ sedan was the first Holden assembled by General Motors in New Zealand. The earlier FX was seldom seen on the country’s roads. Variations of the Holden FX were given unique catalog numbers by Lincoln in New Zealand: Police car (4309), Sedan (4311) and Taxi (4312), whereas Goodwood in Australia allocated all versions the same catalog number of G-9. Goodwood applied the one catalogue number policy to all finishes or liveries for each Micro model, while Lincoln always allocated a different one. A Humber Super Snipe Traffic Car was a model made only in New Zealand. The mounting of the antenna indicates that a separate base casting was made for this model in New Zealand. With two-tone paint and rivets punched into the radiator grille, the Ford Zephyr would later appear as the Ford Zephyr Zodiac in the New Zealand catalogue. Ford did

Australian and New Zealand catalogues. not assemble or sell the Zodiac in Australia, which is why the model was not produced there. A Commer Articulated Low Loader with removable rear ramps and a Commer Articulated Logging Truck were two more models manufactured only in New Zealand. One theory has two sets of dies existing for the Commer articulateds, citing differences in Lincoln’s grille and headlights and in the riveting holding together the upper and lower sections of the toys. Five Micro Models were manufactured as kit sets in New Zealand for collectors to assemble, press over the rivets, and paint. They included two Massey Harris tractors, one with a frontend loader. Both Masseys were New Zealand-only models. The New Zealand version of the Garage Repair Hoist was made from different dies to the Australian and is the only model in the series to
have the words “Micro Model” cast underneath. A hoist was common to the three Presentation Packs Lincoln had earlier made in New Zealand but is omitted from the five gift sets available to Australian collectors for Christmas 1958. A Vickers Viscount was the only Micro Models aircraft. It was cast in a scale of approx. 1/200 and carried the TAA (Trans-Australia Airlines) livery. Lincoln made its last Micro Models in 1960, and Goodwood’s production ceased in 1961. In 1962, New Zealander Kevin F. Meates bought the Micro Models dies from Goodwood. Meates’ family companies have used some of the dies in the New Zealand manufacture of Torro and Matai models during the 1970s and between 1994-98 for the reproduction collectors’ editions by Micro Models Ltd.

Marble Sculpture By Michelangelo To Remain At The Met On Loan From The Cultural Services Of The French Embassy became the home of the Cultural Services of the French Embassy. Visible from the sidewalk, “Cupid” remained hidden in plain sight until the mid-1990s, when a professor at New York University,
Kathleen Weil-Garris Brandt, announced her discovery of a “Michelangelo on Fifth Avenue.” Although many greeted her attribution with skepticism, one who did not was Metropolitan Museum of
Art curator James David Draper (now Curator Emeritus in the Museum’s Department of European Sculpture and Decorative Arts). In 2009, the “Cupid” came to the Met as part of a focused
exhibition that dealt with the question of Michelangelo’s authorship. Three years later, the Met hosted an international two-day symposium titled “Michelangelo and Continued on page 15

Michelangelo Buonarroti’s (Italian 1475–1564) “Cupid” is a ca. 1490 marble sculpture, 37-by-13.25-by-14 inches, 177 pounds, courtesy of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, lent by the French State, Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs (L.2009.40).
America. Originally loaned to the Met in 2009 for a 10-year period, “Cupid” will remain at the museum for another 10year loan period. “Michelangelo’s ‘Cupid’ embodies a beautiful relationship between the Metropolitan Museum of Art and France,” stated Bénédicte de Montlaur, cultural counselor of the French Embassy. “We are thrilled to renew this partnership as we believe that no U.S. institution could better highlight the beauty of the Michelangelo sculpture than the Met.” “Michelangelo’s youthful genius is apparent in his exquisitely rendered ‘Cupid.’ The work emits an emotional and intellectual charge, and it is an honor to present this stunning sculpture to our millions of visitors. We are incredibly grateful to the French Embassy for allowing this historic work to continue to grace our galleries,” stated Max Hollein, director of the Met. When the fragmentary marble figure of a nude youth came to the United States in the early 1900s, its attribution to Michelangelo had been all but forgotten. The sculpture was acquired as a decorative centerpiece for the marble rotunda entrance of New York City’s Payne Whitney Mansion (located at 972 Fifth Ave.), a sumptuous building commissioned as a wedding gift for Mr. and Mrs. Payne and Helen Whitney and designed by the American architect Stanford White. In 1952, the mansion

Florence in the 1490s” that established scholarly consensus; the “Cupid” was accepted as a sculpture designed and carved by the youthful Michelangelo. In 2017, Met curator Carmen Bambach presented the “Cupid” as a touchstone for understanding Michelangelo’s early career in her groundbreaking exhibition “Michelangelo: Divine Draftsman and Designer.” Today, Michelangelo’s “Cupid” is the dramatic focal point in the Met’s gallery featuring 16th-century Italian sculpture and decorative arts (Gallery 503). A dinner co-hosted by Béatrice Stern, trustee of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, was held on May 23 at the Cultural Services of the French

It took a big bid for the castle façade concept art original used for the “It’s a Small World” Disneyland attraction to set the all-time record during the highest grossing Heritage Animation Art Auction. The sale surpassed $2 million, setting a house record with winning bids for its June 15 and 16 event. “This $2-plus million sale puts us firmly at the top of animation art auctions,” said Jim Lentz, director of Animation at Heritage. “We work all year long to bring collectors the very best lots.” Collectors sought early concept art for Walt Disney theme park attractions and films. Artist Mary Blair’s 1964 concept painting for the famous “It’s a Small World” attraction sold for $66,000 against a $10,000 estimate. The piece set a new world artist auction record for Blair’s work, beating the previous $60,000 record set by Heritage in 2018. Among Blair’s most iconic artwork, generating top bids was a “Cinderella” coach and castle concept/color key painting, completed in 1950, which sold for $38,400. An Alice and flowers concept painting for “Alice in Wonderland” sold for $31,200; a surfers concept painting for “It’s a Small World” ended at $28,800; and paintings for key scenes in the 1950 film “Cinderella” and a serene concept painting for the feature film “So Dear to My Heart” sold for $22,800 and $21,600, respectively.
