Color, Cut, And Clarity: The Heisey Glass Company Of Newark, Ohio From Our Files By Andrew Richmond Some stories are the microcosms of larger ones, which is certainly true for August Heisey and his glass company. Heisey himself is the story of the original American dream - an immigrant who worked his way up to incredible wealth and his company’s success and productivity would mirror the rise and fall of American manufacture, for a time supplying a growing middle class with quality goods at affordable prices, giving them successful mimicry of the lavish things in the homes of the industrial tycoons who employed them. In 1861 August Heisey (1842 to

Louis C. Tiffany’s intricate and brilliantly colored masterpieces have captivated collectors for decades and continue to inspire with their timeless beauty. This new book showcases 80 of the firm’s most iconic lamps, including rare and one-of-a-kind creations. These examples have all been newly photographed in detail to reveal features in the glass and metalwork that have never before been seen in print. Wisteria twists and curls with grace, peonies explode with color, and dragonflies dance with the light in these intricate masterpieces. Uniting a reverence for nature and a fascination with the artistic potential of glass, Louis C. Tiffany and his designers created a revolutionary design aesthetic that brought the beauty of the natural world into the home. “The Lamps Of Tiffany Studios: Nature Illuminated” underscores the critical role of Tiffany’s lead lamp designer Clara Driscoll and illustrates many of her now-famous shades, including Dragonfly, Wisteria, and Cobweb. The text also illuminates the critical role of the “Tiffany Girls,” the young women who selected and cut glass for each shade under Driscoll’s

The book is published in conjunction with the opening of the New-York Historical Society’s Tiffany Lamps Gallery, featuring 100 lamps and emphasizes the important contributions of Clara Driscoll and her female workforce. When it comes to Heisey cut glass, however, the work of Emil Krall, whose work rivaled the cutting of Hawkes and Libbey. This ewer with Krall cut decoration brought a very respectable $5,198 in 2010 at Apple Tree Auction Center.

Much of Heisey’s production was pressed glass imitating cut, however the company did manufacture cut glass as well, including fine examples like these stems, which sold at Skinner in July of 2015 for almost $500.

Overview Of Ros-Al Floral Antiques And Events Christoper Glinton and Paul Daugevelo of Ros-Al Floral Antiques and Events are proud to announce the success of their recent “The Great Summer Antique Expo” at the Four Points by Sheraton located in Scranton, Pa., and the “Annual Antiques in the Park” located in historic Memorial Park in Carbondale, Pa. “We were so pleased with the successful turnout at the Four Points by Sheraton location complete with easy access, right off of Rt. 81, with convenient setup and the elegant and spacious banquet hall. The ball room easily accommodated the 40-plus dealers we had who came from five states,” said Chris Glinton. “The dealers made use of the added service of discounted rooms at the hotel which were also appreciated by the many patrons who stayed the weekend.” The show was held from June 10 to 12. A highlight of the weekend show was a well-attended seminar, “Hunting for Book Treasures” conducted by Linda Roller, who owns the Liberty Book Shop in Avis, Pa. Many attending the

Heisey glass came in a rainbow of colors, including bright “flamingo” pink, as is seen on this ice bucket that sold at Apple Tree Auction Center in 2010, for a very affordable $62.

Also among the brightly colored glass produced by Heisey was the vivid “tangerine.” This set of four goblets in tangerine sold for $565 at Apple Tree Auction Center in 2010.

It should be no surprise that Apple Tree Auction Center probably sells more Heisey glass than anyone. Afterall, they are located in Newark, not far from the original factory location. This unusual cut dresser mirror sold at Apple Tree in 2010 for $136.

Man-made glass can be traced back to 5000-3500 BC and the first hollow glass container was made around 1500 BC. The early process of making hollow glass containers was replaced by the popular process of glass blowing and in the early 1820s the process of pressed glass was invented in the United States. Today a glass bottle is 100 percent recyclable with many new bottles contain glass created over 20 years ago. While helping the environment, it is cheaper to recycle old glass than to use new raw materials. The hobby of collecting antique bottles is currently experiencing a great deal of popularity. Five years after the war, he would marry Susan Duncan, whose father was an owner of the Ripley Glass Company (later Geo. Heisey, looking for an opportunity to begin his own business, moved to Newark, Ohio in 1895 and opened a glass factory that began operation in 1896. He himself

Collectors and dealers use rarity, age, condition, and color to determine bottle values. The Historic Burlington Antiques and Art Emporium display case for the month of August will be filled with a variety of bottles, while the promotion for the month is “message in a bottle.” With a purchase, customers can “dig for a bottle” and receive a storewide gift certificate, dealer gift certificate, or dealer discount with no expiration date for a future purchase. On Saturday, Aug. 6, the Greater Burlington Chamber of Commerce will host the “Festival of Lights.” Starting at

3 p.m., with vendors on the Promenade by the river, there will be live bands followed by a lighted/decorated boat parade starting around 8 to 8:30 p.m., and ending the night with fireworks at 9:30 p.m. A rain date will be set for Sunday, Aug. 7. The historic city of Burlington is located on the Delaware river, just a short trip from Philadelphia. It is a great destination deep in history with beautiful architectural buildings. The Emporium is located in a building built between 1917 and 1924 by Edward Supper who sold Nash automobiles. Make a day trip on Aug. 6, starting with antiquing at the Emporium and ending with fireworks along the river. For more information or directions, call 609-747-8333.

archival materials and not be backed or taped to any kind of foreign materials. Linen backed posters are sometimes worth significantly less than a comparable poster in original form. It is best that collectors and enthusiasts look at affordable display options. I always liked the awesome archival displays offered by Spotlight Displays (www.spot lightdisplays.com) but be forewarned, these displays require you to handle the poster directly and place it in the frame. Condition is preeminent so it is very important to use caution when doing this. 3. Storage is paramount. Let’s be honest, when your wife or significant other is screaming at you to better

you love! As much as I love “Star Wars I am also a huge horror fanatic. As such, I have posters that not only span the often sought after science fiction genre, but also the contemporary horror genre as well. And what can be cooler than waking up in the morning and having Pinhead from the movie “Hellraiser starring back at you while you climb out of bed in search of your morning coffee? 5. Pay attention to trends. The time to buy vintage “Star Wars posters was before 2012. The time to buy an original “Back to the Future poster was before the recent celebration of the film’s anniversary. What other films are making a comeback that may bring more attention to the original? If you can spot trends you will save a ton of money by buying before an increase in demand. 6. One day, third party certification and encapsulation will be the standard. I am

all you are guaranteed an original poster and not one of the many reprints that have made their way onto the secondary market. Make no mistake, these reprints have absolutely no collector value. 2. Be careful how and what you frame. Being able to display and enjoy what you buy is one of the fundamental draws of movie poster collecting. Collectors have unlimited options in framing and display, but very few make sense. Be very careful what framing and display options you choose. While professional framing can be expensive, not all professional framers use the same archival materials or procedures. It is important that the poster be held by

The increased popularity of collecting vintage movie posters from the 1980s and ’90s is bringing a lot of new collectors into the hobby. It is this era of collecting that is currently experiencing the most interest from dedicated collectors and enthusiasts alike. Unfortunately, the field of movie poster collecting can be quite daunting due to the lack of readily available resources to help the beginning collector. A collector who thinks he or she is buying an authentic movie poster on eBay for $10 may wonder why a similar poster just sold for several hundred dollars in a competing high end auction site (hint, the poster that sold for $10 was most likely a

reprint). It is because of this that I created these top tips to help any novice or experienced collector make the most of their investment, keep their treasures in top condition, and save money on supplies and framing. 1. The best deals are currently found in reputable online auctions. The key word is reputable. Make no mistake as this trend will change soon, especially as more and more collectors enter the field. But for the time being, online movie poster auctions like the ones offered by Heritage Auction Galleries (www.ha.com) feature some of the best ways to get accurately described posters at a good price. You will pay a buyer’s premium, but the reputation of Heritage Auctions more than makes up for it. Best of

organize your collections you are going to take the path of least resistance. Do so with caution. While most auction houses and galleries ship posters in cardboard mailing tubes, these are not of archival quality nor are they designed for long term storage. For a large selection of archival and low cost poster storage options check Bags Unlimited (www.bags unlimited.com). They cater to collectors of all types and should have safe storage options at an affordable cost to ensure your treasures stay safe and protected. 4. Invest with caution. If you are one of the few people on this planet who happens to dislike science fiction films like “Star Wars but are thinking of buying a vintage “Star Wars poster because of the possible investment aspect please don’t. There are lots of other investment grade items from a plethora of genres in which to choose from. Said another way, simply buy what

or investment grade. The price difference between a very fine plus poster and a very fine/near mint condition poster is negligible. Use it to your advantage. 8. Learn the terminology of the movie poster trade. Do you know the difference between a lobby card, a half sheet and a full sheet? What is the difference in sizes between a pre1985 poster and that of a contemporary modern? All of this matters. Look it all up online and know what you are buying. 9. Learn to recognize fakes and reproductions. There are a ton of fakes and reprints out there. This is one reason why I recommend novice collectors buy from higher end online auction galleries. Even common low value posters have been reproduced. Vintage “Star Wars” posters have been reproduced en masse to the point that I can go to eBay right now and find a dozen or more for sale at any given time. In conclusion, the field of contemporary movie poster is growing. Paying a premium for something that is authentic is much better than scoring a reproduction at an ultra low price. Through research and study, even a novice can start collecting like an expert!

optimistic in stating this, but at the same time pessimistic. Movie poster enthusiasts have been very hesitant to accept any form of encapsulation and certification. Companies like CGC (Comics Guaranty Corporation) have started to grade movie poster lobby cards. Eventually, this will hopefully extend to full-size movie poster grading. When and if it does, prices will explode. 7. Buy posters from the 1980s and 1990s in 9.0 (very fine/near mint) condition or higher only. Duffner & Kimberly created original designs for their lamps, and their workmanship and choice of materials were of the highest quality. To this end, the partnership of Frank Joseph Duffner, a former employee of both the Bradley and Hubbard Company and the Phoenix Glass Company, and Oliver Kimberly, a former Tiffany Studios employee and recent St. Louis exhibition grand prize winner, was formed. Duffner and Kimberly employed the services of Hamilton T. Howell to design

lamps and specific bases. These produced a premier lamp line that fit comfortably into the period home without dominating the decor; rather the lamps complemented it. While Tiffany Studios used a freer, more organic style for their lamps, Duffner & Kimberly lamps were formal and more structured. Howell designed specific basis to be use for specific shades, creating a fixed period piece. This was especially true of the earliest, most expensive, and most aggressively advertised models. Duffner and Kimberly produced their lamp masterpieces only for seven years, and their most extensive output was in the first two years of their existence, 1906 and 1907. Financial recession in United States, as well as a change in popular taste to simpler and less expensive items, doomed the fancy products from Duffner and Kimberly. The company filed for bankruptcy in 1913.

Classic Animation Art Remains Red-Hot At Heritage Auctions

This “Fantasia Chernabog concept painting (Walt Disney, 1940) sold for $65,725. Castle and Coach was also highly sought after by collectors, a unique hand-painted background Color Key/Concept Art painting showcasing the castle in brilliant style, which brought a final price of $23,900. While Disney dominated the top tier of the auction, superb results were also realized for more modern cartoon cels, led by a classic illustration and background from the book version of “It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown (Bill Melendez, 1978), showing all the Peanuts gang standing around in costume looking in their treat bags (featuring the famous line: “What did you get Charlie Brown? I got a rock.), which saw an impressive $16,133 final price realized. An iconic production cel and key master background

from Doctor Seuss’ “How the Grinch Stole Christmas (MGM, 1966), featuring The Grinch and his faithful pooch Max, consigned to auction by the family of Chuck Jones (with proceeds of the sale benefitting the Chuck Jones Center for Creativity in Orange County, Calif.) proved quite popular with collectors as it rose to $14,340. Modern cartoons have been seeing a marked uptick in the last two years, especially those that appeal to Gen-X collectors, and the auction showed that trend continuing as a production title cel from “The Atom Ant/Secret Squirrel Show (Hanna-Barbera, 1965), the best Atom Ant cel Heritage has offered to this point, soared to $10,755 and a production title cel from “The All New Super Friends Hour (Hanna-Barbera, 1977), featuring Batman, Robin, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Superman and new cast additions, The Wonder Twins – Zan and Jayna and their space-monkey, Gleek – saw spirited bidding drive the final price realized to $10,158. A “Just Mickey/The Haunted House Mickey Mouse production cel and painted background (Walt Disney, 1929-30) was a rare handinked, hand-painted nitrate example featuring Mickey Mouse and one of the earliest

Classic Disney cartoon cels and art are experiencing a bullish market. A Danish illustrator, Kay Nielsen’s Chernabog concept art for the 1940 Walt Disney classic film “Fantasia realized $65,725 to top Heritage Auction’s $1.46 million June 11 and 12, Animation Art Signature Auction. The sale was the second-highest grossing animation art auction in history and was 100 percent sold out in terms of both value and total lots, making it what is known in the auction world as a “white glove sale. “Clearly there is still tremendous collector interest in quality animation of all types, said Jim Lentz, director of Animation Art at Heritage Auctions. “Disney continues to lead the way where animation art is concerned, though the prices realized were solid across all genres of animation. We’re all quite pleased with such tremendous results. Disney great Eyvind Earle figured very prominently in the superb results as his 1957 London Bridge concept art for the theatrical short “The Truth About Mother Goose, a magnificent painting done by Earle of London Bridge prior to the Great Fire of 1666, realized $40,630. Smack Dab In The Middle: Design Trends Of The Mid-20th Century Hello, Dollies! Collectible Paper Dolls From Hallmark By Donald-Brian Johnson “You’ll find collecting Hallmark Dolls is really lots of fun, and here’s a little album with a place for every one!” Hallmark, 1948 Over the years, almost every person of note (or notoriety) has been immortalized in colored card stock. Damage can range from frayed edges and creased midsections, to missing or bent clothing tabs, Scotch tape repairs, and Crayola markings. Exceptions to the wellloved, well-worn rule are three series of paper dolls released by Hallmark in the late 1940s: “Dolls From The Land of Make Believe,” “Dolls of the Nations,” and the “Little Women Dolls.” Many can still be found in the colorful and pristine condition that delighted young collectors when the dolls made their debut. The reason is simple: each set came with its own “Collector’s Album.” Doting parents were encouraged to “buy the album with the first doll; then, add to your little girl’s collection from time to time. The interior of each card featured fanciful (and rather lengthy) rhymed text, detailing the back story of the doll pictured: e.g., “Sandy lives in Scotland, so he’s called a little Scot, and if you saw his country, you would like it such a lot.” The dolls were the work of This is June Allyson as “Jo” in the Little Women series, est. $50-$75.

The Jeffrey S. Evans & Associates Americana and Fine Antiques Auction held June 18 was a success by all accounts and generated strong prices in virtually every category. With over 140 consignors included, the auction represented a large offering of high quality material, much of which was fresh to the market, and, in many cases, had descended directly in the families of the original owners. Bidding was intense throughout the long day, with strong institutional interest and 3,500-plus registered bidders participating, including buyers from across the country and as far afield as Germany, Italy, Australia, and the United Kingdom. Leading the way in a robust furniture category, the sale’s top lot was an important 18th-century Virginia serpentine-front walnut sideboard table, part of a group of objects deaccessioned by the Thomas Jefferson Foundation at Monticello to benefit the collections and acquisitions funds. A rare form in fine condition and proportion, the sideboard table brought $87,750 selling to dealer Sumpter Priddy III bidding on behalf of a client. The table was gifted to Monticello in 1982 and likely made in Albemarle County between 1775 and 1785. A mate to the table is at the Virginia Historical Society in Richmond. Another noteworthy piece of furniture in the sale was a South Carolina yellow pine and birch sideboard food safe of impressive size and in outstanding original condition. Discovered in a barn where it had been stored for nearly three decades, the rare form generated tremendous presale interest. With 11 phone bidders in active pursuit, the safe shattered expectations to finish at $28,080. In a sign of market strength, Southern objects remain popular with collectors, and, in addition to the furniture mentioned earlier, the sale also included a number of fine examples of

Old Sturbridge Village School. In 1992, Coolidge left SPNEA to lead group tours to Maritime Canada, Australia and New Zealand, Scandinavia and Antarctica. She continued her work with the Fidelity non profit management foundation through 2014 and is still a trustee of the Lynch Foundation. Her leadership at SPNEA was instrumental in stabilizing the organization and setting the course for the future. Coolidge’s leadership of preservation organizations as well as her service on the boards of both museums and private foundations has made her a well-known and respected expert in the field. In presenting the award to Ms. Coolidge, Old Sturbridge Village trustee and chair of the collections committee Brock Jobe stated, “Nancy is blessed with a sharp mind and a boatload of common sense. Her understanding of business practices and financial management has served her well. She has used her talents to benefit both nonprofits and charitable foundations. Her contributions have truly made a difference in the museum world and the field of historic preservation. No one is more deserving and no one better represents the true character of the Old Sturbridge Village President’s Award.” Past recipients of the President’s Award include Jane Cayford Nylander (2009), President Emerita of Historic New England and former Senior Curator of Old Sturbridge Village; Brock William Jobe (2010), Professor Emeritus of American

Vintage Jewelry Trends Of 2016: Opals, Rose Gold, Baby Rings - Oh, My! By Amanda & Laura Hornberger, co-own- sellers and one of the most frequent search terms made in our online Etsy store. Whether ers of www.maejeanvintage.com

Here are examples of baby rings.

These are alternative engagement rings.

it’s retro opal earrings, a Victorian opal ring, or an Art Deco opal pendant - all are selling well in today’s market. Opal gemstones have the appeal of a flashing play-of-color, caused by diffraction of light. Antique jewelry conversion pieces have also been quite popular. Stick pins and brooches are being converted into easy to wear pieces such as rings and pendants. We have been converting antique stick pins to rings by wrapping around the original stem of the pin into the shank/band of the ring. Since stick pins aren’t as commonly worn as rings are today, this gives the piece a new life, in a modernized way. Rose gold has been extremely popular in vintage and modern jewelry. Rose gold has many individuals who are shopping for jewelry “thinking pink!” The touch of pink hue adds a warm and romantic feel to the jewelry. Rose gold is sometimes also referred to as pink, blush, or Russian gold. Rose gold is an alloy of yellow gold mixed with copper and sometimes silver. Antique baby rings have been another widespread vintage jewelry sensation. These adorable small-sized pieces are being fashioned by some as midi or knuckle rings, worn at the top half of the finger. Baby rings are also popular for baptism gifts, or for young children to wear for photo shoots or special events (of course, under close supervision). These tiny little antique bands can be extremely small, even under a size one. Another popular trend in the jewelry industry is alternative engagement rings, which veer away from the traditional diamond solitaire. Sapphires, rubies, and other

As vintage jewelry dealers, we always try to keep on top of what’s trending in the current market. So far for 2016, we have observed some hot sellers, top searches, and repeated customer requests made within our shop. We have also closely tuned in to social media, publications, and our fellow vintage jewelry dealers’ shops for market research. Some of the biggest trends we have noted for vintage jewelry in 2016 are opal jewelry, rose gold pieces, baby rings, antique conversion pins/brooches, alternative engagement rings, animal (figural) jewelry, and signet rings. Vintage opal jewelry has been one of our top

pieces can be quite whimsical, artistic, and unique. They can be found from across the eras and made from many different mediums, including precious metals, more affordable costume jewelry, and even adorned with gemstones. It is especially precious when a customer purchases a piece of figural jewelry which depicts the kind of pet they have. Lastly, signet rings have been another type of sought-after antique jewelry. The personal nature of these pieces adds a special appeal. For example, when I found an antique Victorian signet ring with my boyfriend’s exact initials, I just couldn’t pass it up. Signet rings can feature a family crest, initial(s), a monogram, or even a coat of arms. Opal jewelry, rose gold pieces, baby rings, antique conversion pieces, alternative engagement rings, animal (figural) jewelry, and signet rings have been some of the top vintage jewelry trends we have noticed so far in 2016. When we are acquiring inventory for our shop, these in-demand heirlooms are typically at the top of our “to buy” list. If you are a fellow antique dealer, you may find these trends are a fairly fast turnover and can command a decent price, depending on their quality and materials. What antique jewelry trends are you noticing? Email your thoughts and observations to Maejeanvintage@gmail.com. Sources: Danielle Miele, Graduate Gemologist, GemGossip.com RubyLaneBlog.com
