Ninth Annual June Festival Of Antiques Strong Attendance And Sales Recorded At Popular One-Day Event he Ninth Annual June Festival of Antiques was presented by The Yellow Garage Antiques and held at the Gloucester County 4-H Fairgrounds in Mullica Hill, N.J., on June 13. Fair skies and warm weather greeted 66 dealers and just under 1,000 patrons. Dealers arrived at the fairgrounds at 7 a.m. and filled three open air pavilions and the outdoor spaces along the walkway between the buildings. The show opened at 10 a.m., an hour later than in previous years. “The Saturday crowd in Mullica Hill is usually late, so we delayed the start,” said Steve Lipman, who co-promotes the festival with his wife,
T
Tracy Dodge. “It definitely worked. There was quite a rush at the opening, and it continued throughout the day. It was one of our best shows to date in terms of sales. The majority of the dealers were pleased,” said Lipman. The Yellow Garage Antiques, who has sponsored the show since its re-birth in 2006, had several of the Main Street shop dealers set up at the show. Richard Worth of Chadds
Ford, Pa., said he had a good show selling several period miniature chests of drawers and a 19th century glass domed cheese keeper. Oley, Pa., dealer Gene Bertolet, another Yellow Garage vendor, stated he bought and sold well. Louise Sleeter of Louise’s Little Ladies of Woodstown, N.J., displayed her dolls and toys. She made several sales in the category and made a few new contacts as well. County dealers Todd Kibler of Country Antiques Two of Mullica Hill and Michael Lauer of Media, Pa., had extensive inventories of decorated stoneware, quilts, furniture and Americana. Lauer made several decoy sales during the show and also had follow-up sales. Sam and Brenda Priem of Time Traveler Antiques, Bridgeton, N.J., said they had their best show to date. Other Yellow Garage dealers included Anthony Puca of Mickleton, N.J.; June Tannenbaum of Mount Laurel, N.J.; Doug and Cindy Robinson of Lower Gwynedd, Pa.; Hugh Allen Luck of Wenonah, N.J.; Jeff and Bobbie Britton of Chadds Ford, Pa.; and Tom and Brenda Boytim of Moorestown, N.J. Dealers from the Eastern Shore of Maryland are always well represented at the June Festival. Easton dealer Don Osburn has done the show every year, and he said this year was his best. Paul Thien and Douglas Warriner of Firehouse Antiques of Galen and Nancy Holleny of Denton were set up with great Americana, textiles and architectural elements. First-timers Nancy Wolf of
Tandem Antiques in Easton had an extensive display of furniture, glass and artwork. Stephan Boyer of Finish Line Collectibles, Campbelltown, Pa., offered a selection of folk art and signs, while Craig White of Wilkes Barre, Pa., had some high quality furniture, stoneware and weathervanes. Two Single-Owner Sessions Highlight Garth’s Summer Auction throughout a long relationship with the firm. “I always knew a call from Shirley meant I was going to have a great day,” said Garth’s president Amelia Jeffers. “Shirley had a fantastic eye and helped to put together some very impressive collections in the midwest.” She was the founding president of the Chicago Suburban Antique Dealers Association and lectured on various subjects in the antiques field. SHOPS & CENTERS Collector Anecdotes And Antics The Unlikely Rise Of Harley Quinn By Shawn Surmick
In 2012, Gillian Flynn penned one of the most groundbreaking works of art I have ever had the pleasure of reading. By 2014, her infamous bestseller, “Gone Girl, would become one of the year’s best movies and would go on to capture the hearts and minds of millions. As an avid fan of “Gone Girl, I have often wondered what makes these kinds of stories about turbulent relationships so popular. Is it how we can relate to some of these fictional characters? Or is it because we sometimes long for our own relationships to be as meaningful or as exciting? At the risk of sounding controversial, I’ll fully admit that
there is something innately attractive about a determined (albeit deeply disturbed) woman who goes to insane lengths to save her troubled relationship. Our society has always been fascinated with strong female characters who ooze confidence, sex appeal, and a bit of instability. Wonder Woman was the quintessential feminine hero of the golden age of comic books. By the time the 1960s came to a close, Super Girl, Batwoman, and Ms. Marvel were all popular female heroes. Catwoman would become one of the first commercially successful female villains. Ironically, it would still take several decades for society to accept her as not only a villain, but also Batman’s love interest. Fast forward to 1992, and Batman was experiencing a newfound revival. Thanks in
part to the success of the caped crusader’s return to the big screen in 1989, DC Comics was able to promote the character in new and exciting ways. An excellent animated television series titled “Batman: The Animated Series was greenlit, and by 1993 the writers felt that the show could begin to explore some more mature themes. By this time the writers were looking for a way to bring a female villain into the mix. One of the most popular characters in the Batman universe at this time was the diabolical Joker. Paul Dini and Bruce Timm, who worked as writers and creators on “Batman: The Animated Series, wanted to create a female character that could act as a sidekick to the Joker. Initially it was thought that the character they would create would have nothing more than
a small role to help tell various tales of the Joker and fill in some details of his life and his inevitable escape from Arkahm Asylum. Introduced as the lovely and talented Dr. Harleen Frances Quinzel in a story titled “Joker’s Favor, the newly minted Harley Quinn stole the show. Her detailed origin tells just how the intelligent and beautiful psychiatrist fell in love with the Joker and became one of Gotham’s most feared female villains. Appearing as a wise-cracking vixen who originally wore a jester outfit, Harley Quinn became an instant success. Her first comic book appearance is credited in “Batman
Adventures #12, and a nearmint copy graded by CGC in 9.8 condition can easily cost $1,500 or more thanks in part to her increased popularity. Keep in mind that this is an unheard-of amount of money for a comic book that debuted in 1993, at a time when comic books were seen as commodities and kept unread in plastic bags made from Mylar. Ironically, it is not just hardcore comic book fans who want to own her first appearance. DC Comics has done a great job of keeping the character relevant within the DC Universe. Recently the character gained notoriety for appearing in a series of video games
set in the Batman universe. Her costume underwent a drastic overhaul that caused some controversy when it first appeared. The comical jester suit had been replaced by a short skirt, high heels, and a skin-tight corset. Most fans of Harley Quinn loved the new look, and it quickly became a mainstay of the character, with her being redrawn for the popular comic books in which she appeared. Today you cannot go to any comic convention or talk to any female comic book fan without the topic of Harley Quinn coming up. Just go to any convention and look at (Continued on page 4)

how many females are dressed up in her signature look. Even trendy mall-based stores like Hot Topic cater to her look by offering a line of outfits that resemble her killer style. Still, one has to ask what about this character makes her so popular, especially among female fans. Is it the fact that she is considered one of the most sexy and powerful characters within the Batman Universe? That would be a good guess, but the reason that so many fans like Harley Quinn is quite simply who her boyfriend is. While the chemistry between Batman and Catwoman has always been entertaining, what comic fan doesn’t want to read about the exploits of the psychopathic Joker and his sociopathic girlfriend? Truth be told, their relationship has been one of the most controversial elements of the whole entire DC Universe. The relationship between Harley Quinn and the Joker has been very toxic at best, and fans cannot seem to get enough. Now with the lovely actress Margot Robbie set to star as Harley Quinn in the upcoming

Pre-Civil War Baseball Card, Passed Down In One Family For 155 Years, Is Ready For Auction A circa 1860 Brooklyn Atlantics baseball card, passed down in the family of player Archibald McMahon for more than 150 years, will be on the block Thursday, July 30, as part of Heritage Auctions’ Platinum Night Sports Auction, held in conjunction with the 2015 National Sports Collectors Convention in Chicago, Ill. It is expected to bring $50,000+. “This is a seminal artifact, not just of baseball, but of American history,” said Chris Ivy, director of sports auctions at Heritage. “It ranks with the most significant mementos of the sport’s infancy ever to surface and is, quite possibly, the only team card on Earth printed before the first drop of blood was spilled in the American Civil War,” said Ivy. The card is being offered by western Massachusetts resident and New York native Florence Sasso, 75, the greatgrand-niece-in-law of Archibald McMahon, one of the players on The Brooklyn Atlantics. The card, which was given to Sasso by her mother, the late Mildred Sasso, spent the decades with various family members before ending up with Sasso’s mother, who kept it in a secret compartment in a piece of furniture the family inherited from an uncle. Once the card was given to Sasso, she moved it from
place to place, often from safekeeping in the pages of a book into another book, until she realized that the card, aside from being a link to her family history, could be quite valuable. Without children to pass it on to, Sasso has decided the time has come for a new caretaker for the artifact. “This story of this card is also my mother’s story,” said Sasso. “She loved baseball, and she kept it all those years. She always wanted it to take care of me, and now it will.” The subject of the card is the Atlantic Base Ball Club of Brooklyn, considered the first Champion of our National Pastime, as well as the sport’s first dynasty. The Atlantics served as a founding member of the sport’s first organized league, the National Association of Base Ball Players, and held the Championship from 1859 through the war-shortened season of 1861 before finally surrendering supremacy to archrival Eckford of Brooklyn in 1862. The card was passed down
through the family of Archibald McMahon, an outfielder for the squad. That provenance can be traced back as far as 1928, with the obituary of 92-year old John M c M a h o n , Archibald’s brother, from which the following is excerpted: “He also was an ardent baseball fan and had a picture in his home of the original Atlantics team, of which his brother, Archibald McMahon, was a member. The members of the Atlantic nine who played in a majority of games during the season of 1859 were: Boerum, catcher; M. O’Brien, pitcher; Price, Oliver and Smith on the bases; Pearce, short, and Hamilton, P. O’Brien and McMahon, in the outfield.” The Atlantics enjoyed a recent brief return to the spotlight when an 1865 team card surfaced in a small Maine auction a year ago, garnering a winning bid of $92,000. “Certainly this is the more significant of the pair,” said Ivy. It is an interesting side note to the card that player Richard “Dickey” Pearce is widely considered one of the first professional ballplayers, a pioneer of the shortstop position, and father of what we know today as the “bunt.” To learn more, visit www.HA.com.

tion of Civil War guns, apparel and battlefield implements will take center stage on day two of Morphy Auctions’ Firearms Auction scheduled for Friday and Saturday, July 24 and 25. Described by Dave Bushing, head of Morphy’s Firearms Division, as “one of the greatest untouched collections ever uncovered,” the Roberts assemblage arose from historical tragedy. “The Roberts family’s story was not unlike that of thousands of other families of
box,” said Bushing. In 1862, brothers George and Charles Roberts, who came from a prosperous East Goshen Township, Pennsylvania, family, heeded the call to arms and joined the Union Army. A high-grade, silver-grip officer’s sword presented in 1863 to 1st Lt. Charles W. Roberts by the members of Company A, 124th Regiment P.V. is estimated at $6,000-$8,000. The scarce Winchester model 1886 50/110 Express rifle holds an estimate of $8,000-$15,000.

mill factory. “He obtained original carbines from Bannerman and used original grinder parts from the factory, so unless there’s provenance that goes back far enough, there’s no way of knowing if a gun of this type is from 1864 or the 1920s. But either way, to the best of my knowledge, our gun is one of only a few known to exist,” said Bushing. The gun was obtained earlier this year in Plymouth, Mass., together with a Colt 1860 long-flute revolver originally owned by Gen. Gordon of the 3rd Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry. The revolver will be auctioned by Morphy’s along with provenance dating back to Gordon’s niece, plus Gordon’s own cartes-de-visite and books. Another rarity is an engraved Colt 1849 pocket revolver that was purchased at William Read & Sons in 1861 and gifted to a sergeant in the 2nd Massachusetts Infantry Regiment by Hose Company 90 of Milton, Mass. “In the Civil War, only officers were issued sidearms, but enlisted men could carry one at their own cost, so often families would buy them for a son or husband going off to war. In this case, it was purchased by a firehouse, perhaps for one of their own,” said Bushing. It comes with a holster and a book of exploits written by the division’s chaplain. The session also includes a Tiffany presentation sword and a few other Civil War swords and dozens of other Civil War guns, among them an unfired 1861 Maynard carbine and an 1863 Sharps musket of the type made famous in

Charles Roberts by the members of Company A, 124th Regiment, P.V., is expected to make $6,000-$8,000. Immediately following the 111 consecutive lots devoted exclusively to the Roberts collection, Morphy’s will offer three highly important CivilWar-era guns, including a rare Sharps New Model 1859 Coffee Mill experimental carbine, which had a grinder installed in its buttstock in 1864 at the St. Louis Arsenal. “During the Civil War, troops were issued a bag of corn kernels, which they could feed to their horses. But if they wanted to use the corn for their own consumption, they had to grind the kernels first,” explained Bushing. “With this particular gun, they could pour the kernels into the buttstock, hold the gun over a plate and grind with a separately provided handle.” Bushing also noted that a few guns of this type were made in the early 20th-century by a former employee of the

returning home to Pennsylvania, where he purchased a farm outside the town of West Chester. The core of the Roberts family collection consists of the original uniforms, guns and relics used in battle by George and Charles Roberts, family treasures that would be painstakingly preserved by several generations in the third floor “museum room” of Charles’ farmhouse. Having an interest in historical research, Charles continued to add important Civil War items to the collection until his death in 1895. After that, the collection remained within the Roberts family, its contents untouched to this day. “In 1904, two photos were taken of the museum room. The items we will auction are an identical match to the pieces in the photos. Nothing has been removed from the collection. It is a virtual time capsule and a discovery that comes along once in a gun historian’s lifetime,” said Bushing. All but 20 were amassed by a single private collector who focused on owning every highgrade, name-brand gun available in the marketplace. “He bought every caliber, model, grade and special-issue commemorative from Winchester, which was remaking all of its famous lines, plus Colt, Ruger, Browning, Smith & Wesson, Sig Sauer and others,” said Bushing. “They’re literally brand new. We had to unwrap many of them for the first time to photograph them for our catalog.” Many of the Brownings are engraversigned with deluxe gold-inlaid claro walnut stocks. At least six of the highestgrade Belgian Custom Browning Superposed shotguns ever manufactured are entered in the sale, some with estimates exceeding $10,000. Also, there are 12 new, boxed examples of the Belgian Browning Hi-Power 9mm, a handgun so revered, it was used by the armed forces of more than 50 countries. Each of the 12 will be auctioned as an individual lot. Winchester highlights include a high-grade Model 1886 Take-Down rifle, a scarce .50 caliber Express Model, and a high-grade Model 1873 in .22 caliber. There are two J.P. Lower stamped guns, an all-matching WWII Luger listed by serial
