In my last column, I talked a bit about the merits of collecting southwestern Native American jewelry and the various periods of production. In this week’s edition, we will finish out the history of production and talk about collecting items. The final period of production is from the 1990s to the present. Here, there are two major factors in the production of jewelry. First, the economic situation in the late 1990s forced a pull-back by many shops from buying from makers. As a result, traditional artists were nervous about holding too much of their inventory. Second, a proliferation of other metals were being used to make jewelry. The phrase that was batted around was that, in pricing terms, copper was the new silver. The high cost of silver and the reluctance of many artists to hold onto it led to the production of silver-on-copper work that still dominates big chunks of the marketplace. The copper that is used is of a heavy gauge, and much of the work is highly skilled. Starting to buy southwestern jewelry is really about developing your eye as to what you would like to collect. The differences between Navajo, Zuni and Hopi work are immense. Do you like big turquoise work and classic southwestern style? Then Navajo is for you. Do you favor small and delicate work with intricately shaped stones? Then Zuni is for you. Do you like cast silver that is handled masterfully? Then check out

southwestern jewelry. There is a big segment of southwestern jewelry that was commercially mass-produced, usually by Indians working in assembly-line production shops, that was retailed during the 1940s and ’50s. This is often called Fred Harvey jewelry for the noted hotelier/restaurateur/ marketer of southwestern experiences. This jewelry has become incredibly popular, and prices are rising very fast. I often say that if you see a thunderbird, that may be a good clue that it is a Harvey piece. There are several wonderful

Hopi working. Add into this the mix of tribally mixed silversmiths, and you can get a wide range of items and influences. Where to buy is key in all of this! The dirty secret that many in the West don’t want to tell you is that their best pieces come from old collections in the East. Selling jewelry to tourists has been going on for more than 100 years, and so many great pieces are now back East where they are waiting to be discovered. So often the best place to start is really locally. Check out auctions and dealers if you’re looking for older examples. Some years ago, I purchased for my wife two complete turquoise sets (necklace, earrings and cuff) that had birthday cards tucked into them from the husband/buyer to his wife. A new set was purchased annually, and she clearly must have valued them to have kept them all those years. There needs to be a few brief comments made about some pitfalls in collecting

American And European Fine And Decorative Art Unstoppable At Morphy’s $3.3 Million Auction Russian Vase By Unknown Manufacturer Commands $141,450 cabochons and further embellished with a medley of notched, engraved and repousse adornments. The 7.5inch vessel, which was cataloged with a $600-$900 estimate, was off to the races from the very first bid and didn’t end its breathtaking run until 66 bids later when it sold for $141,450. Its new owner, who bid via the internet, wishes to remain anonymous. The competition for highend European design continued unabated with the introduction of a spectacular array of antique lamps and glass. Leading the group was a rare and important 18-inch-tall Galle mold-blown Rhododendron lamp similar to an example shown in the Duncan/de Bartha reference book “Galle Lamps.” It handily surpassed expectations at $98,400. The Tiffany name worked its magic in the auction room repeatedly and across several categories. A 10 7/8-inch Tiffany glass paperweight vase in an overall swirl pattern incorporating shades of red, maroon, lilac, orange, green and brown was signed on its base and identified as a “Favrile Exhibition Piece.” Estimated at $6,000$8,000, it climbed to $43,050. Similarly estimated, a 7.5-inch Tiffany paperweight The painting “Diogenes in Search of an Honest vase designed in an Man,” oil-on-canvas, Dutch school, early 17th cen- upright egg shape tury, 60-by-48 inches (framed), previously sold at with a marbled motif Sotheby’s in 1987, realized $61,500 against an was bid to $36,900. the paintings had exceptional lineage, such as the Dutch school oil-on-canvas of “Diogenes” that sold for four times the high estimate.” The artwork referenced by Morphy was an unsigned 60-by 48-inch (framed) painting titled “Diogenes in Search of an Honest Man.” Dating to the early 17th century, it came with provenance that confirmed it previously had been held in several distinguished private collections and was exhibited at both the Denver Art Museum and San Diego Fine Arts Gallery. The artwork sold in 1987 at Sotheby’s, whose auction catalog noted that the artist might have been Werner van den Valckert, Nicolaes Claes Moyaert or Johannes Woutersz. It was also stated that the painting has a companion piece in the Glasgow College (Scotland) collection titled “Laomedon, King of Troy with Neptune and Apollo.” Intriguing to bidders on both sides of the Atlantic, the work swept past its $10,000-$15,000

When Keats wrote, “A thing of beauty is a joy forever, its loveliness increases,” he unwittingly created a tagline for Morphy Auctions’ $3.3 million Fine and Decorative Arts Sale held June 18 and 19. The breathtaking array of European and American antiques, glass and ceramics dazzled an international contingent of bidders who drove prices on many items to unexpected, if not astounding levels. The fresh-to-market 2,500lot selection included a dark horse that raced to the top of prices realized. The sale’s big winner, a Russian pottery vase dated “1903” and bearing multiple impressed marks, had the unmistakable look of expert craftsmanship. Its elaborately designed metal overlay depicting helmeted warriors on horseback was tastefully set with jeweled

PAI’s 78th Rare Posters Auction Earns $1.3 Million Demand For Iconic Art Nouveau And Art Deco Prevails its estimate of $2,500-$3,000 with a winning bid of $8,400. Luciano Achille Mauzan inspired further ardor for uncommon works of the 1920s and 1930s. This auction featured two of his never-before-seen posters for French perfume, and his image of a flirtatious lady leaning over a dramatically oversized rose spurred competitive bidding. “Brixia/Crème et Poudre à la Rose,” ca. 1924, surpassed its estimate of $7,000$9,000, selling for $13,200. Similarly, Marcello Dudovich proved his prowess with early 20th century lithographs, especially his large-scale works. His theatrical still life, “Marca Zenit / G. B. Borsalino,” from 1911, was swept away for $14,400; the intoxicating “Cordial Campari,” from 1914, earned a grand $21,600. Of course, Art Nouveau posters continued to persuade bidders as well. In the bicycle section, William H. Bradley gained notable bids for his 1895 “Victor Bicycles,” which topped out at $9,600. Edward Penfield’s “Orient Cycles,” from ca. 1895, also inspired awe and was won for $16,800. Other impressive transportation sales include E. Schreiber’s “Mercedes” from 1912 ($22,800), George Picard’s “Salon de l’Automobile” from 1906 ($13,200), and Charles Léonce Brossé’s “Meeting d’Aviation/Nice” from 1910 ($16,800). As always, Alphonse Mucha’s lush decorative works were in high demand, and in particular, his impressive theatre designs for Sarah Bernhardt were quite coveted. His celestial “La Dame aux Camelias,” from 1896, was won for $28,800, followed closely by his 1899 “Hamlet,” which fetched $24,000. And his beloved “Moët & Chandon” from 1899 proved its lasting desirability with a winning bid of This version of Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec’s “May $26,400. Milton” from 1895 was a variant with a banjoThe Belle Epoque playing clown as a remarque (lower right) and prevailed with Henri was signed and numbered from an edition of 25 de Toulouse-Lautrec, copies. It sold for $48,000. whose iconic 1896

design, “Troupe de Mlle Églantine,” can-canned away to the tune of $31,200. The same amount was pledged to his sensitive 1895 portrait, “May Belfort,” and Belfort’s partner, the English dancer May Milton, transfixed collectors in ToulouseLautrec’s 1895 portrayal. This variant of “May Milton” included a banjo-playing clown as a remarque and was signed and numbered from an edition of 25 copies, earning a $48,000 winning bid. Modern and contemporary posters also had their share of the limelight. A rare French promotion for “KingKong,” from 1942, encouraged an $18,000 win. The whimsy of Keith Haring delighted as ever; his 1985 poster, “New York is Book

Poster Auctions International’s second sale of the year finished at $1,300,000 in sales. Auction LXXVIII, held June 23, elicited enthusiasm for uncommon and little-known works by masters of Art Deco and Art Nouveau. Charles Loupot sparked a frenzy of bidding for his never-before-seen designs. “Nicolas,” from 1933, secured top lot status, selling for $72,000. All prices reported include a buyer premium. The Art Deco master’s interpretation of Nectar, the wine deliveryman for the Nicolas firm, has appropriately become an advertising icon, but this particular poster is the only known copy of the design with letters. Poster lovers were after two of Loupot’s earliest and previously unknown lithographs, “Parfums Naturels/Parrot” and “Parfums Naturels/Butterflies,” both from 1916, which sold for $3,840 and $5,520, respectively. The artist also caused a stir with the divine “Au Louvre” from 1923; this variant, without letters, was won for $15,600. This auction included a notable Art Deco design, Guillermo Laborde’s 1930 “1er Campeonato Mundial Football / Uruguay,” which promoted the first FIFA World Cup in Montevideo. The charming design combined with the historical significance of this work made for a desirable collector’s item. The poster exceeded

High-condition architectural and “safe” banks led the group, some displaying original paint so well preserved, it could only be described as “factory fresh.” A small-version Bay Window bank topped the list at $7,800 against an estimate of $2,000-$3,000, while a 9-inch Kenton Statue of Liberty bank realized $6,000. Cast-iron mechanical banks put in a powerful performance, as well. A Girl Skipping Rope estimated at $6,000-$8,000 achieved $14,400, while an extremely rare Bowling Alley bank satisfied pre-sale expectations at $19,200. “The winner of the Bowling Alley bank was new to bank collecting and ended up buying at least a halfdozen more mechanicals at the sale. It’s the beginning of a great collection,” stated Bertoia, adding, “He has bought doorstops from me in the past, so he knows and recognizes great cast-iron. It stands to reason that he would now move into mechanical banks, which are a much earlier form,

On Thursday and Friday, Aug. 22 and 23, Bertoia Auctions will host its next online, phone and absenteeonly Bertoia Basics sale. The company’s next Signature Sale, which is slated for Friday and Saturday, Oct. 11 and 12, at Bertoia’s gallery, is titled “The Gentleman’s Collection” and will exclusively feature the renowned Tony Annesse lifetime collection of Christmas antiques. Premium-quality pieces from prestigious toy, bank and train collections attracted a strong contingent of bidders to literally every category represented in Bertoia’s May 23 and 24 Annual Spring Toy Sale. Just over 1,000 lots crossed the auction block, taking in $1.3 million. All prices quoted in this report are inclusive of 20-percent buyer’s premium. The star of the two-day event was a spectacular Althof Bergmann stenciled tin “Columbia” ferry boat that swept past its $20,000$30,000 estimate to dock at $40,800. The buyer was an American collector. “We had a nice turnout inhouse, especially for still banks. The distance some collectors drove to compete in person was quite surprising to us,” said Bertoia Auctions’ owner Jeanne Bertoia. The impressive array of still banks included more than 300 items from the Ned Bauer estate collection, of Ohio, a past host of the Still Bank Collectors Association

sets, released in 1993, were the limited Alpha and Beta sets of cards, before the Unlimited format was introduced. The first expansion, Arabian Nights, was released in December 1993, after the Limited Editions were printed and sold out. The cards’ popularity never abated over the years. Graded standout cards included Alpha Black Lotus, 8.5; Alpha Mox Pearl, 9.5; Beta Time Vault, 10.0; Beta Black Lotus, 9.0; and Beta Earthquake, 9.5. Many others were graded at 9.0 and 9.5. “These cards were offered as complete sets and not broken up into multiple lots. That gave investors a chance to get a complete set in one fell swoop,” said Philip Weiss of Weiss Auctions. The Magic: The Gathering complete 1993 Alpha card set was by far the top lot of the auction, finishing at an astounding $423,750. It was the first set for MTG, with a print run of just 1,100 rare cards. The set was complete with 295 black bordered cards. There were 39 cards that had been BGS graded, including many rare and powerful cards. There were 249 ungraded cards. The Magic: The Gathering complete 1993 Beta card set was the runner-up top lot of the auction, garnering a selling price of $175,150. It was the second set for MTG, with a print run of 3,200 rare cards. The set was complete with 302 black bordered cards. There were 39 cards that had been BGS graded; these included many rare and powerful cards. There were 263 ungraded cards. Finally, the Magic: The Gathering complete 1993 Arabian Knights card set rounded out the trilogy, commanding $9,315. It was the first MTG expansion set, complete with 92 cards. There were 78 unique cards, of which 14 had variants with darker colored and colorless mana symbols and with smaller text in the colorless mana symbols. Five cards in the set had been BGS graded. The auction featured strong internet and phone bidding, as well as a crowd in the gallery. All prices quoted include the buyer’s premium. A scarce cotton U.S. Centennial flag, with the stars in the canton arranged to read “1776 1876,” measuring 45-by-28 inches, with some scattered tears and staining, made $8,190. Also, a collection of 10 British Campaign medals spanning the years of 1855-1950, all of them identified, changed hands for $7,250. The medals included three Military Crosses for Bravery. A quarter-plate ambrotype image of Confederate Col. Wharton J. Green, dated 1861, went for $7,910. Col. Green originally organized the 2nd North Carolina Battalion at Richmond, Va., and received authority to raise a regiment for Brigadier General Henry A. Wise’s Legion, to be known as Colonel Green’s Independent Regiment. Green was born in St. Marks, Fla., in 1831. An Allen & Ginter non-sports card collection from the 1880s, more than 600 pieces in all, rose to $5,050. Most of the sets, if not all, were incomplete, but the collection featured sets that included Flags of All Nations, Birds of America, Fish from American Water, Fans of the Period, World’s Smokers, Prize & Game Chickens, World’s Beauties, Fruits, American Editors and others.
