lassic and vintage boating collectors worldwide were treated to an event that will probably never again be replicated. The three day event, May 18 to 20, was the Willmar, Minnesota, sale of Paul Mikkelson’s astounding variety of classic Larson Falls Flyers boats, toy boats and motors, restored and unrestored outboard motors and a huge selection of marine related advertising pieces. “This was easily an historic event,” noted Penn. “We had bidders from 27 countries vying to win some of Paul’s rarest collectibles. This collection has been kept in his museum in W i l l m a r , Minnesota, since the time he started collecting. It included many one-of-a-kind items including some of the rarest full size vintage boats which he spent years finding and then restoring to pristine condition.” Penn’s auction team moved over 1,600 lots Youth doesn’t always mean shy! see and bid on the exceptional number of items. The first day ended with the warehouse nearly cleaned out, except for those items left for later pickup. Everyone was tired, but excited to begin the second day of the event…on Saturday at the Willmar Civic Center, just a few short miles away. There the crowd would find even more astonishing items, many of them not seen for many years and part of the never ending quest Paul Mikkelson had for finding the most exotic and rare. Saturday - Bigger And Even Better! The second day brought an even larger audience to the Willmar Civic Center where over 20,000 square feet was filled with beautifully planned display areas. Each one allowed auction goers the chance to see many items

Paul Mikkelson spared no expense on getting these restorations just right and it showed, right up to the gleaming trailers carrying these treasures. And again the toys took center stage. Many of the rarest pieces were sitting right up front, displayed in front of the auctioneer’s stage platform. Many audience members were literally glued to their seats during the entire 10 hour session, moving only to raise a bidder number. It was evident these were collectors that were very serious about what was being offered and they didn’t want to miss any opportunities. The full size speed boats rolled in at planned intervals and the audience always clustered closer into the seating area as they arrived. Among the rarest selling on Saturday was “Boondoggle”. This 1939 Falls Flyer Inboard is believed to be the only single cockpit inboard ever built by the Larson Boat Company. At only 16 feet in length, the boat looked fast just sitting on its trailer. Paul had a very special Falls Flyer vehicle built just for his personal use and for pulling his boats in parades (Lot 410). It used the Falls Flyer design for a body that was placed atop a 1964 VW Beetle chassis. This one-of-akind vehicle was a crowd favorite and it managed $10,000 before bidding ended. Johnson Model RDE motors. It sat on a fully restored TeeNee trailer. Throughout the day, more Larson speed boats made the trip forward. Some of them sporting the earlier canvas covered steambent oak frames and others constructed completely of fiberglass including a 1956 craft sporting a special “bubble” engine cover. This rare option was created by Larson Boats to cover the outboard motor to quiet the engine. Only two of these craft with the special bubble are known to exist and Paul had both of them. The chance of seeing these two extremely rare boats in the same room together will likely never happen again.

There were three dealers specializing in glass that had good shows: Lon Knickerbocker of The Coast Antiques, Dansville, New York; Dale Murschell of Springfield, West Virginia; and Thomas C. Haunton of Wilmington, Massachusetts. Lon brought a good selection of art glass while Dale’s tables had many pieces of early handblown items. Thomas, who authors the book “20th Century South Jersey Glass, was selling Clevenger Brothers glassware, as well as copies of his book. The now defunct Clevenger Brothers began in the 1930s making reproductions of 18th- and 19thcentury Southern New Jersey glass and commemorative bottles at their factory in nearby Clayton, New Jersey. Tom’s trip from Massachusetts to New Jersey was a bit of a homecoming for him. Members of the Harrison Township Historical Society purchased a sign in pavilion 3a that read “For SaleLippincott- Mullica Hill. The sign now resides in The Old Town Hall which is right next door to the Yellow Garage Antiques. The Historical Society is responsible for the upkeep of the building which has several ever-changing antiques displays plus an old general store. Don’t Miss The Excitement! Mid-Atlantic Nostalgia Convention Takes Place August 9-11

in Howell, Michigan. “It’s actually all of these combined. If people cannot afford to fly to the West Coast to attend the Turner Classic Movies Film Festival or the San Diego Comic Con, or if they don’t want to deal with a crowd

of 22,000 plus, the MidAtlantic Nostalgia Convention is a wonderful solution. I often describe the event as the destination convention of the year.” For spectators it’s a visceral, exhilarating chance to revisit the past and reminisce about an era that people over the age of 50 remember with fondness.

fifties; and the ever-popular question and answer sessions with the celebrities on stage. “Collecting old comics and toys can be a business for some of us,” remarks Michelle Vinje, one of the many vendors at MANC. “One of the most common remarks I hear from attendees is ‘Gee, I used to have one of those. I never anticipated how valuable that would have become years later.’ Other comments I hear include, ‘I can’t believe I forgot about that. I remember watching that television show every Wednesday night after school!’” “The Nostalgia Con has been growing every year,” explains Martin Grams, the events coordinator. “Unlike some huge comic cons held at convention centers that attract tens of thousands of fans, all lining up outside in the streets, we have plenty of aisle space for those in electric scooters to move about freely. If you want your autograph from Shirley Jones this year, you won’t have to wait three hours in line. The longest people wait is about 20 minutes. This is because we offer a relaxed atmosphere and everyone has an opportunity to ask the celebrities questions. The celebrities we attract to our show don’t do many conven-

famous singers, celebrities who have attended in the past include Davy Jones, David Hedison, Patty Duke, Celeste Holm, Ann Rutherford, and many others. This year’s event will host the famous singer James Darren, Sherry Jackson (Make Room for Daddy), Jay North (Dennis the Menace), Shirley Jones (Oklahoma!), Van Williams (The Green Hornet), Robert Colbert (Maverick) and Ron Ely

long. These celebrities are incredibly accessible, and this is the novelty older generations have come to expect every year. At MANC, attendees can browse over 150 vendor tables filled with comics, board games, vintage toys, DVDs, books, movie posters, postcards, lobby cards, penny arcade cards, photographs and other valuable items. A movie room screens vintage films all day with rare prints originating from archival storage houses and preservation societies. Slide show seminars offer to stimulate and educate attendees on a diverse range of pop culture subjects. The sock hop on Friday night has proven popular year after year. A drive-in movie theater in the hotel parking lot, at sunset, adds excitement after dark. An old-time radio drama is re-created on stage, complete with sound effects, microphone, and scripts. Museums in Maryland and Pennsylvania put on displays of vintage memorabilia - some so valuable that glass cases are brought in to protect the posters. A charity auction held every year at the event offers autographed items donated by celebrities. “Some people have asked me if the MidAtlantic Nostalgia Convention is a Western Film Festival, a flea market, or a silent cinema screening,” remarks Terry Salomonson, owner and operator of Audio Classics

The Mid-Atlantic Nostalgia Convention (MANC) is a three-day festival held at the Hunt Valley Marriott, Maryland (located outside Baltimore) and celebrates the by-gone era when penny candy came wrapped in a paper bag, Pepsi Cola was a nickel a bottle, and drive-in movie theaters were the rage every Friday night. This year’s event takes place August 9 to 11. Art showcases vary in size and some are fancier than others. Some carry American Indian traditions; others center on rock and roll; and a few explore Greek and Irish roots. The Mid-Atlantic Nostalgia Convention, however, may be the only pop culture convention in Maryland to feature Hollywood celebrities that mingle with the fans, pose for photographs, and sign autographs all day

AUCTION SALE BILLS

For Display Advertising Information Phone 1-800-800-1833, Ext. 2541 Morphy Auctions is introducing a new series of boutique auctions that feature either a single collection or a mix of quality merchandise from the most popular categories of antiques, art and collectibles. The company will introduce its Discovery Auctions series with a Tuesday, July 31 sale starting at 10 a.m. Eastern Time at the company’s gallery on the Adamstown antiques strip in Denver, Pennsylvania. All auction items will be on display and available to preview two weeks prior to the sale and from 8 to 10 a.m. on auction day. The auctions will be held live in the gallery with absentee, phone and Internet live-bidding capability. There will be no reserves on any item. Each lot will sell to the highest bidder regardless of price. “We needed an alternative way in which to accommodate the large number of collections and items being offered to us. We also wanted

to have the ability to accept consignments on short notice,” said Morphy Auctions CEO Dan Morphy, explaining the motivation behind the new auction series. “We envision holding around two of these sales per month, but that number could increase.” Morphy said the auctions are expressly tailored to accommodate consignors who prefer to sell their antique toys, advertising, fine and decorative art or jewelry with a quick turnaround time. A fully illustrated online catalog will be created for each event. Those who attend in person will receive a complimentary illustrated running sheet that follows the order of sale. Items may be consigned to any of Morphy’s Discovery sales up to three weeks prior to the next scheduled auction. For additional information about consigning, call (717) 335-3435 or e-mail Dave Stewart at sdave@morphyauctions.com.

by Charlotte Brozek

If you’re looking for a day trip or perhaps a weekend getaway this summer, Lambertville, New Jersey, boasts a great selection of antique shops, art galleries, restaurants, inns and a flock of Victorian and federal homes to admire. Antique shops dotting the narrow streets include The People’s Store and A Touch Of The Past Antique Center. On the outskirts of the city, the Golden Nugget Antique Flea Market is a must for travelers. The Golden Nugget Antique Flea Market, located at 1850 River Road (Route 29), has been around since 1967. The market contains sixty inside shops. In addition, over 400 tables for outside dealers dot the fields in front of the antique building housing the inside dealers. The permanent inside dealers

Store at number 35 North Union, opened its doors this past February. Owner Gerry Quatro moved the business up the block to place his shop squarely in the midst of several large centers. Currently, the multi-dealer shop has ten dealers - with room for more. The dealers carry furniture, paintings, silver, china, primitives, books and glass to name just a portion of the variety of antiques offered here. On a recent visit to A Touch Of The Past, an extremely rare 1860 Majolica jardinière and base was showcased at $2250. Shoppers are always on the lookout for Bucks County artists, and A Touch Of The

Impressionist Cesare Ricciardi is offered at $895. During the summers, Quatro plans on opening the shop’s hidden treasure - a lovely Victorian garden in back of the shop - to display vintage outdoor furnishings from birdbaths to chaise lounges. When opened, the garden, a quiet respite from the hustle and bustle of the busy streets of shoppers, is sure to attract a steady stream of visitors stopping by to enjoy the peaceful setting and perhaps set their sights on an antique garden bench to bring home. Also spotted here recently was a mid-century glass top table with a mahogany base, $695; a mid-century Lucite base glass top table,

Car dboar d Gold Discovered In Ohio Attic A treasure trove of over 700 century-old, well-preserved baseball cards discovered in the attic of a Defiance, Ohio house earlier this year – and that could have landed in the trash with other items being tossed out now is valued at several million dollars. One expert described the discovery as “…the most significant find of vintage baseball cards ever reported….” The first 37 cards from the trove, with names still familiar to today’s baseball fans, such as Ty Cobb, Cy Young and Honus Wagner, are expected to sell for a combined total of more than $500,000 in a public auction to be conducted in Baltimore, Maryland and online on August 2, 2012 by Heritage Auctions (www.HA.com), the world’s largest collectibles auctioneer. Other cards from the discovery will be offered in future auctions and private sales by Heritage. “The cards are all from a rare series known by collectors as E98 that were issued around 1910. They were acquired at the time for promotional purposes by Carl Hench, a German immigrant who owned Hench’s Meat Market & Sausage Works in Defiance, which eventually became Chief Supermarket. His heirs were cleaning their late grandfather’s house when they found the cards in a box under an old dollhouse in the attic,” said Chris Ivy, Heritage’s Director of Sports Auctions in Dallas, Texas. When they discovered them in the attic, cousins Karla Hench and Karl Kissner didn’t know if the

Fortunately, we decided to keep them and started doing research about the cards,” said Kissner, one of the 20 heirs who will share proceeds from sales of the cards by Heritage Auctions. “Every time we received more information we got more excited. At one point, I thought, ‘Wow! Oh, my! I’m holding a $70,000 baseball card. They’d been on my office chair and I said, ‘Let’s get these in a vault.’” “We kept the discovery a secret from the family for a few months until enough information was learned about the cards. We called the family members together for a meeting with Heritage Auctions representatives and told the Recently discovered in a Defiance, Ohio family we found house attic with over 700 other well-pre- something in the attic served 1910 era baseball cards, this card with significant of Hall of Fame player Honus (“Hans”) value. (NASDAQ: CLCT). “In terms of how this will impact the collecting market, it can be argued that this is the most significant find of vintage baseball cards ever reported when you evaluate the find in context,” stated Orlando. “It’s a cliché, but this is one of those once-in-a-lifetime discoveries that came out of nowhere: the ultimate buried treasure find. It’s one thing to find a $10,000 autographed baseball or a $50,000 coin, but it’s extraordinarily rare to find a single group of vintage baseball cards worth millions of dollars,” said Orlando. The auction by Heritage Auctions will be conducted in conjunction with the annual National Sports Collectors Convention. “As the word started spreading through the hobby grapevine, we’ve had quite a few phone calls and emails from collectors interested in obtaining the cards. Consignments Wanted For Our Fall 2012 Advertising, Toy & Doll Auction Julia’s recent toy, doll & advertising auction hit just above the million dollar mark against a pre-auction estimate of items sold of approximately $750,000. Results were a clear indication that buyer optimism is up, especially for fresh to the market quality goods that are conservatively estimated. The auction boasted a stellar offering that ranged from early American tin horse drawn pieces to clockwork automotive toys, pedal cars, fine French & German dolls, antique advertising, coin-op, salesman samples, music machines, and much more. For approximately 40 years, Julia’s has established and maintained a sterling reputation for honest and fair dealing, elegant presentation of quality goods, strong and sometimes record prices, and the most competitive commission rates in the industry. We are now accepting quality consignments for our fall Toy & Doll auction. If you are looking for the greatest net return, whether you have one item or an entire collection, please contact us today for a free, no-obligation consultation. Our seller’s commission on expensive items is the lowest in the business at 0%. Below are some results from our most recent auction.
