A Tale Of Two Ladies A Moravian Flask And A Guanyin Lead Kennedy’s Estate Auction From ornately carved furniture by R.J. Horner to fine art, Kennedy’s Auction Service’s June 2 auction of the Carl Smith estate in the central garden district of Memphis, Tenn., had it all, but it was two ladies, each standing less than two feet tall, that drew the most attention. In a case of East meets West, the two figures, one from North Carolina, the other from China, brought a lot of presale attention and sold well. All prices reported include a 13 percent buyer’s premium. A rare Moravian pottery flask in the form of a standing woman in a green dress, holding a bouquet of posies, crossed the block for $28,600. The circa 1811 piece is believed to have been made in the shop of Rudolph Christ (1750-1833) in Salem, N.C., who was renowned among Salem potters from 1789 to 1821. The figure descended in the family of a West Tennessee historian and collector. A smaller example of this flask is in the collection of the Museum of Early Southern Decorative Arts (MESDA) in Winston Salem, N.C. The flask was in surprisingly good condition. The consignor found it laying outside in the grass at her grandmother’s house in 1990 in Collierville, Tenn., noted auctioneer Mark Kennedy. “They were

She kept it for 25 years before deciding to sell, and it survived years of sitting on a shelf in the TV room around children playing,” said Kennedy. Ohio, held on June 22, 23, and 24. An eager crowd of shoppers lined up on opening day, and vendors filled the buildings and outside spaces at the Fayette County Fairgrounds. “It’s been very nice,” said Vickie Stranzin of Cincinnati, who came to shop the show with her husband. “There are a lot of good items out here right now.” Stranzin left the show with an antique sewing basket and vintage fabric, as well as a belt buckle. All throughout the fairgrounds, quality antique and vintage items were on display ready to find a new home. One vendor lined an outdoor path with furniture along with firefighting equipment and signs. Down the row, another vendor had an old wooden train engine and caboose pull toy that found a buyer. It was tagged $24. Near the entrance, a vendor had a Hawthorne bicycle for sale, priced at $100. A vintage dress form stood under a tent waiting for a new designer. It had a $70 price tag. deemed a success and had a total of 1,365 registered bidders. “We were quite pleased with how the auction performed. Phone and internet bidding was very active, but in-house bidding was also strong. This auction was very wide-ranging, which helped drive a lot of interest. Our sales are usually quite diverse with offerings to appeal to many kinds of collectors,” stated Kennedy. The top lot of the auction was an R.J. Horner mahogany grandfather clock with J.J. Elliott nine-tube works that attained $90,750 from an in-house buyer. Retaining its original finish, the 118.5-inch-tall clock’s silvered dial was signed “Elliott London,” and a retailers plaque read, “Muhr’s Sons Philadelphia.” The clock had standing mermaids flanking the glass door and was profusely carved with winged griffins, pierced carved angel crest, flowers, foliage and birds. The parade of R.J Horner (1854-1922) furniture across the block continued with a 12piece dining suite, with its pieces auctioned separately. A determined phone bidder bought every lot, in order to keep the suite together. A figural maiden carved china cabinet, circa 1890, led the grouping at $12,430. The pieces in

Lighting up the auction was a Tiffany Tulip lamp shade marked “Tiffany Studios” on the interior lower edge that was put on a circa 1915 lamp base (not Tiffany). It sold for $24,860. The family who owned it, according to Kennedy, had not realized they had an authentic Tiffany shade. Fine art offerings ranged from paintings to sculpture, highlighted by an oil-on-canvas attributed to Nicolao Landucci (1801-68) titled “The Gladiator,” which brought $6,497. The mid-19th-century painting, measuring 40-by63.5 inches, depicts a gladiator’s entrance into the Coliseum in ancient Rome to the cheers and jeers of the crowd while his opponent awaits him with trident and This Tiffany Studios Tulip lamp shade iaculum. Sarasota Estate Auction is completing preparations for its Asian Sale, Part Two, on Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 11 and 12. The larger portion of the Chinese Export porcelain collection of patriotic pieces was acquired by a missionary who gathered extremely rare porcelains during his tenure in China from 1909 through 1948. Part one was sold April 28 and 29, with especially strong interest from buyers worldwide due to the rarity of the pieces offered. Offerings at both sales include Chinese porcelain objects made in the late Ting Dynasty and early Chinese Republic era, and the decorations include early American historical issues and special European Market pieces as well. Some of the pieces are from earlier periods, and most are in near perfect condition. Many of the porcelains are such rare examples they are only seen in museums such as Delaware’s Winterthur Museum and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. More than 50 lots, nearly 100 examples, will be offered in the August sale. These are available for inspection at the Sarasota Estate Auction’s Gallery in Sarasota, Fla., managed by auctioneer and dealer Andrew Ford. The collection was assembled by an American missionary from Westchester County, N.Y., who spent almost 40 years working in China begining in 1909. Cultivating direct ties with artisans and factories in Canton, he built his large collection of early porcelains and rare coins as part of his passion, all from the late Ting and early Chinese Republic times. A number of items from the collection date between 1860 and 1926. Many of the pieces were probably made for the United States Sesquicentennial of 1926. Part Two of the Asian Sale will feature a great deal of Chinese Export American market porcelain, including historical pieces such as a warming tureen depicting the Surrender of Burgoyne, a helmet creamer celebrating the signing of the Declaration of Independence, an oversize Canton platter showing a three-masted sailing ship with two American flags and a collection of four

From the genealogy, I am now far more interested in, and reading about, the story of the Plymouth colony and also the War of 1812. The other week, I was decrying the disappearance of used bookstores and the declining reading habits of many Americans. It is easy to jump on this little chestnut. The book on the history of the battle is now on my shelf as part of the history of my family. This has become an interesting area for me to collect, as I have started to seek out county histories, city directories, and other similar publications where my family is mentioned. An atlas of Crawford County, Pa., from the 1870s helped me to find the family farm in 2016 when I overlaid it with a modern county map. Similarly, a city directory helped me to locate a family store despite a bad effort at renumbering houses. As I have gotten deeper into my genealogy thanks to

That being said, I was looking at my own bookshelf and realized that inadvertently I had started a collection of books that related to my own family’s story. I am not talking about ubiquitous family Bibles, but rather about books that tie directly to the history of my family. This past weekend, we went for a visit to the Wilderness Battlefield here in Virginia. The Colonial Williamsburg Foundation Receives Rare Painting Subject’s Descendants Donate Work By 18th-Century Virginia Artist well-known portrait of the subject’s son, George Booth. Until now, the painting of Mrs. Booth, which is in remarkable condition and survives in its original frame, has descended through the Booth family. “Rare early works by local artists such as William Dering expand the depth and breadth of our collections and better enable us to share America’s enduring story,” said Mitchell B. Reiss, the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation’s president and CEO. “We are particularly grateful for gifts such as this since they allow us to teach history in a very human and

The portrait of Joyce Armistead Booth (Mrs. Mordecai Booth) by William Dering (active 1734/1735-1755), is an oil-on-canvas from Williamsburg, Va., ca. 1745, and a recent gift of Julia Miles Brock, Edward Taliaferro Miles and Georginana Serpell Miles in memory of their mother, Alice Taliaferro Miles, 2018-165, A&B.

personal way.” “Executed in saturated, well-preserved reds, blues, and golds and measuring more than four feet in height, this likeness of Joyce Armistead Booth is visually arresting,” said Ronald L. Hurst, the foundation’s Carlisle H. Humelsine chief curator and vice president for collections, conservation and museums. “The portrait commands the viewer’s attention, and in so doing, provides a window into the goals and aspirations of early Virginia’s planter aristocracy.” This Dering portrait is significant to ongoing research that Colonial Williamsburg’s experts are undertaking. Laura Barry, Juli Grainger curator of paintings, drawings and sculpture, and Shelley Svoboda, senior conservator of paintings, are at work on a comprehensive study of the artist and his work from both historical and technical perspectives. The portrait of Joyce Armistead Booth, especially due to its pristine condition, informs this research and will help the experts to better understand the nuances in Dering’s other canvases. “This generous gift gives us an extraordinary opportunity to reunite two family portraits, more fully tell the story of this important Virginia artist and to better understand the context of William Dering’s body of work,” said Barry. Along with the additional works by this artist in the collection, including the portrait of Elizabeth Buckner Stith (an oil-on-canvas dating from 1745-49, the only signed and dated Dering example and for years the only means by which to measure his work), Barry and Svoboda are

able to study the individual qualities of each painting as well as to examine them together as a group. Little is known about William Dering in his early years, but he arrived in Williamsburg from Philadelphia in 1737. He advertised in the Virginia Gazette that same year, the first of several occasions he did so, to announce the opening of a dancing school at the College of William and Mary. By 1744 his success enabled him to purchase two lots and move into the Thomas Everard House on Palace Green. The following year, Dering advertised twice to promote “an assembly at the Capitol…during the Court,” a ball held when the capital city was busy with visiting elected representatives from across the colony. During his time in Williamsburg, Dering also befriended William Byrd II, a Virginia planter and Renaissance man who owned one of the largest art collections in the American colonies. During his many visits to Byrd’s James River estate, Dering painted his daughter, Anne Byrd Carter. (Her portrait is also in the Colonial Williamsburg collection.) The artist’s extravagant lifestyle led to debt, however,

and he was twice forced to mortgage his property. Ultimately, Dering departed Williamsburg for Charleston, S.C., leaving his wife and son behind for a year to handle the public sale of his possessions. In the first half of the 18th century, William Dering was a well-connected dancing master and artist who lived and worked in Williamsburg, Va. Today, only six of Dering’s paintings are known to survive; four, including the artist’s only known signed and dated portrait, are in Colonial Williamsburg’s collection, the largest assemblage of his work. Now, through a generous gift from the sitter’s descendants, Joyce Armistead Booth (Mrs. Mordecai Booth), ca. 1745, a large-scale oil-oncanvas, joins Dering’s other works at Colonial Williamsburg, including the

memory of their mother, Alice Taliaferro Miles. It will be included in a future exhibition of the artist’s portraits to be held at the Art Museums of Colonial Williamsburg. “The painting of Joyce Armistead Booth, my fivetimes great-grandmother, has been a part of my life for all 74 years, but Miss Joyce (as we were taught to call her) is nearly 300 years old,” said Julia Miles Brock of Virginia. “My brother, sister and I decided it was time she was in a museum with its attendant care, proper storage and an appreciative audience.”

School for Advanced Research, Santa Fe, New Mexico. Native American artists, performers, and community leaders will participate in the ceremonial opening of the exhibition and related events. Education programming— including gallery talks, panel discussions, performances, and workshops—will continue throughout the run of “Art of Native America.” Credits The exhibition is organized at The Met by Sylvia Yount, Lawrence A. Fleischman curator in charge of the American Wing, and guest curated by Gaylord Torrence, Fred and Virginia Merrill senior curator of American Indian Art at the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art. A world-renowned expert in Native American art, Torrence previously curated the acclaimed exhibition “The Plains Indians: Artists of Earth and Sky,” which came to The Met in 2015. The Charles and Valerie Diker Collection of Native American Art In both temporal depth and regional diversity, the Charles and Valerie Diker collection has long been considered the most significant collection of historical Native American art in private hands. Over the past 45 years, the Dikers have formed a collection that represents the highest artistic achievements of Native American cultures across North America. Selected works from the collection were on view at The Met in the exhibition “Native American Masterpieces from the Charles and Valerie Diker Collection” (Oct. 28, 2016, to March 31, 2017). The Dikers have been involved at The Met as donors and lenders of Native American works of art since the 1990s. Three objects given by them in 2016, a Haudenosaunee pouch and a Pomo basket by unrecorded

artists and a jar by Maria and Julián Martínez of the San Ildefonso Pueblo, were first displayed that fall in The Met’s American Wing, where they were shown in conversation with contemporaneous paintings and sculpture addressing relevant historical and cultural themes. Publication An illustrated catalogue will accompany the exhibition. Contributions include essays by guest curator Gaylord Torrence addressing the historical, cultural, and aesthetic dimensions of select masterworks; Ned Blackhawk discussing the complexity of displaying historical Native American art in a contemporary museum setting; and Sylvia Yount examining the significance of introducing Native American objects into a department historically devoted to Euro-American art. Suitable for scholars and general readers alike, the volume will be published by The Metropolitan Museum of Art and distributed by Yale

American Wing. Exhibition Overview “Art of Native America” will highlight seven key culture areas: Woodlands, Plains, Plateau, Southwest, Great Basin and California, Northwest Coast, and Arctic. Featured works cover all of the major artistic forms produced by identified and unrecorded Native Americans: painting, drawing, sculpture, textiles, quill and bead embroidery, basketry, and ceramics. Highlights include a masterfully carved Tsimshian headdress frontlet with abalone shell inlays (1820–40) from British Columbia; an elaborate dance mask (ca. 1900) made by a Yup’ik artist from Hooper Bay, Alaska; a powerful ceramic jar (ca. 1895–1900) depicting the Butterfly Maiden spirit being (Palhik Mana), created by renowned Hopi-Tewa potter Nampeyo from Hano Village, Ariz.; a woven basket (1907) by Washoe artist Louisa Keyser from Carson City, Nev.; and a shoulder bag made from finely tanned and dyed deerskin hide embellished with porcupine quills (ca. 1820), produced by an Ojibwa artist from Ontario, Canada. A core group of works from the Diker collection will remain on view in the American Wing’s Erving and Joyce Wolf Gallery. Light-sensitive works will be rotated annually. Displays of Native and non-Native art, historical and contemporary, will also be organized in response to the Diker collection. Opening Thursday, Oct. 4, at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, “Art of Native America: The Charles and Valerie Diker Collection” will feature 116 masterworks representing the achievements of artists from more than 50 distinct indigenous traditions across North America. Ranging in date from the 2nd to the early 20th century, the diverse works are promised gifts (first announced in spring 2017), donations, and loans to The Met from the pioneering collectors Charles and Valerie Diker. The collection has particular strengths in sculpture from British Columbia and Alaska, California baskets, pottery from Southwestern pueblos, Plains drawings and regalia, and rare accessories from the eastern Woodlands. The exhibition is made possible by The Peter Jay Sharp Foundation, the Diane W. and James E. Burke Fund, the Enterprise Holdings Endowment, and the Walton Family Foundation. A ceremonial opening of the exhibition involving contemporary Native American artists, performers, and community leaders will be accompanied by a robust series of public programs. “Art of Native America” will be the first exhibition of Native American art to be presented in the American Wing since it was established in 1924. Originally focused on American Colonial and early Federal decorative arts and architecture, the wing’s collecting areas and focus have continued to evolve. “The presentation of the Diker collection represents a transformative moment for The Met, enabling us to expand and enrich the stories we tell about American art and culture,” said Daniel H. Weiss, The Met’s president and CEO. “We are committed to exploring thoughtfully and sensitively the entangled histories of contact and colonization from both Native and Euro-American perspectives. The Met takes seriously its curatorial responsibility to share with our broad audiences, in a variety of displays and contexts, the cultural endurance and creative continuity of indigenous American artists,” stated Sylvia Yount, the Lawrence A. Fleischman curator in charge of the

Why Are Some Trunk Tops Flat And Others Curved?

REAL ESTATE & CONTENTS AUCTION

“What’s It Worth” Antiques Minute By Mike Ivankovich Why do some steamer or storage trunks have flat-tops, while others have curved or “domed” tops? The answer is surprisingly simple. Back around 1900 when so many of our ancestors were immigrating to America, many arrived via steamship. And for many, nearly everything they owned was contained in their trunk. Most were coming to America in pursuit of a better life, had little money, and traveled in steerage class. Usually their trunks were stacked oneupon-another in storage, often 10-plus trunks high. And it was not uncommon for those trunks on the bottom to be damaged by the crushing weight of those trunks above it. So someone invented the

“domed” top trunk. The curved top not only offered a little more storage space, it meant that when traveling it had to be placed on the top of the stack, and not the bottom, thereby reducing the likelihood of damage.

What’s it Worth? Whether flat-top or dome-top, many people love their trunks. Those that are older and not in refinished condition often sell for $10 to $50 at auction. Trunks that have been nicely re-finished can command a

premium price, often in the $100 to $250 range, and a name like “Louis Vuitton” can add considerable value. In smaller living spaces, a flattop trunk can offer functionality as both a coffee table as well as storage space. Mike Ivankovich is an auctioneer, appraiser, home downsizing expert, and host of the “What’s It Worth? Ask Mike the Appraiser” radio show that airs live on Friday mornings from 9 to 10 a.m. on WBCB 1490 AM in the greater Philadelphia area. It is available on the internet at www.WBCB1490.com. His show also airs in Denver, Co., on KEZW Cruisin 1430 AM on Saturdays from 3 to 4 p.m. MST and Sundays from 11 a.m. to noon MST, and on the internet at www.Cruisin1430.com.
