Jeffrey S. Evans’ 36th Semiannual Americana Event Sees Strong Sales North Carolina Inlaid Walnut Cellaret/Bottle Case Sold For $87,750 By Susan Emerson Nutter Many antique auctions today feature collections amassed over time and with purpose. This was true for the 36th Semiannual Americana and Fine Antiques Auction featuring Virginia and the South held by Jeffrey S. Evans & Associates on June 21 and 22. Day one featured the Jack and Tommie Marsh collection, more than 500 lots of country Americana and folk art. The Marshes, of Columbia, S.C., bought from other well-known collectors and dealers at shows such as Heart of Country in Nashville, Tenn. This first day saw solid sales of highly desirable items, with many moving from the Marsh collection into yet another devotee’s stash. A Pennsylvania poplar bucket bench with an interesting off-set single drawer in a lovely old blue took top honors, selling for $4,095 (est. $800-$1,200). Prices include a 17 percent buyer’s premium. A bid of $3,042 (est. $2,000-$3,000) secured ownership of a Pennsylvania painted pine Dutch cupboard that featured both spoon rests and a pie shelf, and, wearing the date “1915” as well as a sweet rabbit with a checkerboard design in each corner, a desirable folk art hooked rug
Attributed to Micajah Wilkes (Bertie County) this North Carolina inlaid walnut cellaret/ bottle case was the sale’s top seller, obtaining a selling price of $87,750.

Offered were items from several well-known estates where no intentional “collecting” took place, but instead were made up of generations of items brought together due to life events and family acquisitions. The material in these estates was outstanding and also well-known by many antique enthusiasts, making for some spirited bidding. The Antique Automobile Club of America (AACA) Library and Research Center is pleased to announce that William T. “Tom” Gerrard has donated his extensive literature collection to the library. The library has cared for the collection since 2013, calling it the Gerrard Classic Auto Literature Collection. Gathered during a 35year span, this collection includes many of the rarest items known to the hobby covering the 1950s and 1960s. I t e m s include sales catalogs, brochures, color and fabric samples, shop manuals, wiring diagrams, dealer binders, filmstrips, slides and more. The formal transfer of ownership occurred earlier this year. Gerrard has had a long-standing relationship with the AACA Library and Research Center, which is why he originally offered the massive collection to the center on a long-term loan. “After several years of watching the staff handle my collection and seeing the dedication they had for its preservation, it makes me pleased to now make
my loan a gift. With the announcement that AACA will be opening a new and modern library in 2020, the timing seems perfect. I believe strongly in the library and its mission, and I hope that the materials will help other collectors and restorers for many years to come,” stated Gerrard. Each item in the Gerrard Classic Auto Collection has been digitized and cataloged and is r e a d i l y accessible in hard copy or electronic format. The library is free and open to the public Mondays through Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., currently located at 501 W. Governor Road, Hershey, Pa. This donation will further the AACA Library’s mission of connecting people with primary sources pertaining to automotive history and further solidify its position as “America’s Automotive Library.” For more information about the AACA Library and Research Center, visit www.aacalibrary.org. piece’s full title was “PLAN / of the CITY of / Washington / in the Territory of Columbia / ceded by the States of / VIRGINIA and MARYLAND / to the / United States of America, / and by them established as the / SEAT of their GOVERNMENT, / after the Year / MDCCC.” Found rolled up in a trunk with other family papers, this engraving sold for $12,870 (est. $2,000-$3,000). Also found in that same trunk in the Clopper-Hutton estate was the hand-sewn cotton 1844 Henry Clay presidential campaign flag banner having a blue glazed canton with 20 double-appliqued stars arranged in a Great Star-type pattern with ten sewn stripes. Stenciled in black on the lower stripes was “HOME PROTECTION AND HENRY CLAY.” This historical/political piece realized $8,775 (est. $800-$1,200). Trying to include all the wonderful items from the Clopper-Hutton estate that sold during this 36th semiannual auction is rough, but two more that need to be noted would have to be the Chickasaw, Southeastern Native American beadwork sash/baldric made of white and black beads on a red-dye homespun rounded at each end. This sash soared to $17,550 (est. $500-$800), while a circa 1840, hand-stitched Maryland chintz appliqued bed cover done in a fourpaneled white matelasse-type fabric ground with an applied medallion arrangement sold for $5,265 (est. $500-$800). The cover’s center vignette of a fountain with a crane-like bird among flowers as well as a vine border with flowers and butterflies and fringe on three sides was just gorgeous. The June 21 and 22 Evans auction was a spectacular “double-header.” “We can usually tell how the auction will go by the number of people calling and asking questions leading up to the sale,” said Kimbrough. “And we had lots of that. The auction gallery was packed with buyers both days. People came to buy, resulting in prices being pushed to a healthier level than we’ve seen in some time. This was, of course, fantastic for us and for the consignors, but also for the antiques industry, in general, which is great.” To learn more, visit www.jeffreysevans.com.

Collector Anecdotes And Antics Collecting The Obscure: A Look At The Underpowered Sega 32X Video Game System In 1992, the home video game market was drastically different than what it is today. Sega, once seen as a small but hopeful underdog nipping at the heels of Nintendo’s dominance, scored a massive commercial success with the launch of their 16-bit Sega Genesis home video game system in late 1989. The system started off slow, but Sega used its dominance and back catalog of arcade games to help promote the system. This caused Nintendo to retaliate by releasing its own 16-bit system known as the Super Nintendo Entertainment System in 1992 in an attempt to beat back Sega’s growing dominance. Even to this day, there is heavy debate as to what company actually won the 16-bit video game wars. That said, even if we declare Sega the winner of the 16-bit console wars, they were not able to transition that win to anything fruitful long-term. Ironically, Sega’s downfall started with how they managed their success with the Sega Genesis system. By 1993, the Sega Genesis and Super Nintendo Entertainment System were running neck and neck as two of the home video game
console war’s heavyweight contenders. The TurboGrafx-16 released by NEC in 1988, and a competitor to both Sega and Nintendo at the time, was already dead and buried. This left Sega in a precarious position: allow Nintendo to overtake their market dominance or come up with new and interesting ways to keep consumers’ attention. Sega already had moderate success with the addition of the Sega CD system, which was a CDROM expansion system for their Sega Genesis system. Contrary to popular belief, the Sega CD sold extremely well for its first year on the market. This success went to Sega’s head, and in order to outmaneuver Nintendo, the company made the disastrous decision to greenlight two next generation 32-bit systems. The first was known as Sega Saturn, and it would be a fully dedicated CD-ROM system and be able to play advanced arcade quality games in the home (more on that in an upcoming article). The second system was codenamed “Mars” (Sega had an interesting obsession with code naming a lot of their projects after planets). Both 32-bit systems received a lot of attention when first announced in midto late 1993. That said, it appeared that “Mars” was shaping up to be some kind of
add-on unit for the original Sega Genesis system that upgraded the system to 32-it quality graphics. When confirmed by Sega, this confused a lot of consumers because Sega also confirmed that their stand-alone 32-bit system, known as Saturn, would launch in 1995. This meant that Sega would have to do the near impossible—support two completely different home video game systems at the same time, each marketed to a different core demographic. “Mars” would be aimed at price conscious consumers who weren’t ready to give up their Sega Genesis systems just yet. Saturn would be geared towards the next hardcore next generation video game fans who were ready for something more powerful. Business analysts were extremely pessimistic about Sega’s ability to do this, as it costs a lot of money to develop games for two unique home video game systems. By early 1994, Sega started to leak more information regarding their Mars 32-bit project, which was now called the Sega 32X. The 32X looked like a weird mushroom adaptor that plugged into the cartridge slot of the Sega Genesis system and upgraded the internal system to two 32-bit central processors and a low-powered 3-D graphics

processor. The add-on unit launched in the U.S. on Nov. 21, 1994, with a suggested retail price of $159.99. Sega heavily advertised the unit as an affordable upgrade to the Sega Genesis system that would breathe new life into the now underpowered Sega Genesis. Unfortunately, with Sega also announcing a 1995 release date for their newer and more powerful Sega Saturn stand-alone system, consumers were skeptical. Make no mistake, when the 32X system add-on launched, it had some very good games available right alongside it. The “Star Wars” arcade game was an excellent title that Sega ensured was ready for the new console, as was Virtua Racing Deluxe, which was an arcade port of their popular racing game. Unfortunately, games were priced at $69.99 each. When consumers saw just how expensive and truly underpowered this low-cost add-on was to buy; most consumers decided to pass on the system. This caused a lot of video game publishers to cancel most of the games they planned to make for the system, and without new games, the cycle intensified, and the system was discontinued less than a year and a half after its release. The Sega Saturn didn’t do too well either thanks in part to fierce competition from Sony with the release of the original and groundbreaking Sony Playstation. By 1997,

retailers would be clearing out the $159.99 Sega 32X system for around $25, and I know quite a few lucky gamers who took advantage of this great deal. So much for the “next level” of gaming. Today, the little add-on that couldn’t offers something of a mixed bag for collectors. A complete 32X system with all cables and accessories is worth about $100 on the secondary market, but a complete in-box unit with all packaging can be worth close to $200. If you happen to have the game “Spider-Man: Web of Fire” complete in its original box, you have a collectible worth close to $700 on today’s market. It is by far one of the hardest to find games for the system. That said, if you only have a copy of the game without the original box or manual, expect to get $250 for it. Other uncommon games include Knuckles Chaotix, which is worth about $90

complete in its original box, and Kolibri, which goes for about $80 complete in its box. The 32X will never be one of the most sought-after vintage video game systems, but serious Sega enthusiasts are clamoring for a lot of the games, as very few of the games were ever released on other video game platforms. That said, and given the obscurity of the system in general, collectors should understand that the current value and fascination with the system and its games will definitely pass. I would never consider the Sega 32X something that future video game collectors will clamor after in 50 years. Still, enjoy it for what it is, a curiosity in video game history that reflects a time period of so much technological promise.

On July 18, Rowe’s Auction Service in Carlisle, Pa., sold a group of 256 T206 tobacco baseball cards as one lot for $12,000. Many of the ungraded cards were adhered into an album. The majority were in relative poor condition. “I think most would grade out to around one-and-a half,” according to Dave Rowe. There are thousands of variants when it comes to these cards. Produced in a three-year period, between 1909 and 1911, what is refered to as T206 cards have the baseball player on one side and a tobacco company advertisement on the other. Of course, condition is paramount in terms of determining value, as well as who the player is, but also very important is the advertisment on the back. The set is made up of 524 cards (possibly 527), roughly 100 of which were minor league players. The American Tobacco Company issued cards from 16 different brands of tobacco, mostly cigarette companies. This is why variants are abundant. The same card can be found with a different advertisement. There were also multiple cards issued for some players. More common ads or “backs” are for Piedmont and also Sweet Caporal. Lesser found ads are for Old Mill and Polar Bear. The famous well-known Honus Wagner card was a T206 card (not in the group that sold at Rowe’s). It is rare due to such a low number produced. The reason has been frequently printed over the years that Wagner did not want to associate himself with cigarettes or the encouragement/endorsement of smoking, especially for children. It is known that

top seller in a $1.5 million online auction of superior quality entertainment, sports and political memorabilia conducted on July 10 and 11. The Boba Fett action figure in AFA 85 NM+ condition was similar to a prototype from the legendary Russell Branton collection that Hake’s sold for $86,383 last year. Hake’s president, Alex Winter, had predicted the example in the July sale might become the first “Star Wars” toy ever to hit the $100,000 mark. It did so, and then some, landing it in the record books as the highestpriced “Star Wars” toy ever to be sold at auction. A Jawa figure, vinyl cape variation, from Meccano’s French release of Kenner’s 1978 “Star Wars” toy line, was another action-figure highlight. AFAgraded 80+ NM, the 2.25-inch figure was encapsulated in an unpunched 12 Back blister card and carried the distinction of being the single highest-graded example of only three such figures ever to be accepted for grading by AFA. It sold within estimate for $32,450. With original comic art now widely regarded as a legitimate subcategory of “fine art,” expectations were high for the 100-plus lots of original artwork for comic book covers and interior pages, Sunday and daily comic strips, and specialty pieces. Dave Cockrum’s (1943-2006) action-packed title splash page for “X-Men Vol. 1” #95, published by Marvel Comics in October 1975, led the group. Artist-signed and inscribed, with a Marvel Comics copyright ink stamp on verso, it reached its estimate range at $75,673. Three consecutive lots of Charles Schulz art for Peanuts daily strips from 1960, 1961 and 1965, respectively, came
Jefferson Airplane and Big Brother and the Holding Company. “The first in any series is always an important milestone, and the cultural importance of this poster cannot be overstated,” noted Hake’s president Alex Winter. The poster was salvaged by an attendee at the show, who later gifted it to a friend who kept it for 30 years before consigning it to Hake’s. It sold for $24,780. More than 400 American political items took bidders on a journey whose timeline ran from George Washington’s presidency to the modern era. A magnificent brass-framed 1860 campaign ambrotype containing Mathew Brady’s “Cooper Union” portrait of Abraham Lincoln, a very rare survivor in superior condition, sold for $17,394. Another highlight was an 1864 Lincoln/Andrew Johnson Civil War-era jugate “Grand National Union Banner” by Currier. The hand-colored litho with circular portraits of the two running mates sold for $9,864. A baseball card that was in a league of its own was the 1909 issue from Old Mill Cigarettes with a portrait of
The Historic Burlington Antiques and Arts Emporium in Burlington City, N.J., will offer customers complimentary water ice from 3 to 7 p.m. on every Thursday during the month of August. So far this summer, in the Philadelphia area, it has been in the three H’s: hazy, hot and humid. It wasn’t until the early 1800s with the invention of the insulated ice house that ice cream became affordable at a more moderate price. Today, the total annual production of ice cream in the United States is estimated at more than 1.6 billion gallons. But, another favorite summer treat is Italian ice, often referred to as water ice. Italians migrating during the turn of the century brought a unique form of Italian water ice to America. Back in the old country, they formulated a unique product that served as a substitute for air-conditioning on a hot summer’s day. The main difference between ice cream and Italian ice is
