Antique Toys And Banks To Be Auctioned
Aug. 3 At RSL Gallery
Legendary George Brown “Charles” Hose Reel Carriage Ranks Among Expected Stars Of The Sale
The J. & E. Stevens cast-iron “Clown, Harlequin and Columbine” mechanical bank, early 1880s, when activated, has figures that turn and spin in a style known as “harlequinade,” derived from the British comedic pantomime. Most known examples of this bank have undergone repairs. This one, with provenance from the Gertrude Hegarty collection, is in perfect condition, estimated $125,000-$175,000.
On Saturday, Aug. 3, at RSL Auction’s Whitehouse Station, N.J., gallery, Pittsburgh’s Haradin family will bid farewell to a 149-piece collection of American toys and banks that literally has no rival. Richly historical and boasting one peerless rarity after another, the grouping spans multiple generations of a clan whose roots are embedded in two communities: their Western Pennsylvania hometown and the realm of antique toy and bank collecting.
As each piece passes into the hands of a new owner to begin the next phase of its journey, it will do so with provenance as its traveling companion. And thanks to the Haradins’ unwavering emphasis on rarity and condition, buyers will have the assurance of knowing they have acquired the créme de la créme.
The Haradin family collection began with Dr. Anthony “Tony” Haradin (1937-2016) and his wife, Roberta. An oncologist and hematologist, Haradin accrued many

professional honors and distinctions during his career. He was an assistant professor of medicine at the University of Pittsburgh for more than 45 years and served on the staff of several Pittsburgh hospitals.
On weekends, the couple could often be found side by side, hunting for art, antiques and midcentury furniture at local flea markets and auctions. It was a pastime that developed organically, since neither of them came from a family that collected or had an involvement in antiques or art. The family’s 50-year odyssey into the world of toy and bank collecting began in 1969, when they
The top lot of the sale may end up being this rare pedestal version of J. & E. Stevens’ (Cromwell, Conn.) “Jonah and the Whale” cast-iron mechanical bank. Its provenance includes the collection of Edwin F. Mosler Jr. Considered one of the finest of few known examples, the estimate will be $175,000-$225,000.

“Everyday Antiques” shows how to introduce antique and vintage pieces into an ordinary house to create a home that’s individual, comfortable, and stylish.
The objects in this accessible, generously illustrated book range from iconic designer pieces to flea market finds from every price point. Among the pedigreed pieces featured in inspired juxtapositions are a wavy molded plywood screen by Charles and Ray Eames paired with a 1950s chaise lounge designed by Edward Wormley; a Donald Juddstyle daybed in natural wood across from a white leather Barcelona chair by Mies van der Rohe; and a 1962 Arco floor lamp designed by Achille and Pier Castiglioni illuminating a modern interpretation of an Art Deco sofa.
Many of the treasures in the book have more humble origins, including late 19th-century herbieres (dried, pressed, and mounted framed plants), vintage wallpaper, pressed glassware,
r epurposed pieces like an antique door-turned dining room table, and much more.
A Brooklyn loft, 1800s Cape Cod cottage, modern Danish apartment, and Welsh farmhouse are just some of the featured settings that demonstrate the versatility of decorating with both antique and vintage pieces, regardless of style or period.
For most of us, decorating is not about taking an empty room and filling it with all-new coordinated furnishings, nor is it a case of inheriting random antiques. Usually, we’re somewhere in the middle, a couple of handme-downs here, some bigbox items there, plus a few antique or vintage or simply secondhand pieces thrown into the mix. In “Everyday Antiques,” Katherine Sorrell shows how to harmoniously combine these unexpected and individual older pieces with new ones to make a home sing, using items like an old portrait that was a lucky flea market find, a set of 1960s glassware found at a thrift store, or an ornate giltframed mirror that belonged to your grandmother. I don’t think incorporating various

Collector Anecdotes And Antics
Rare Book Market Is On Fire!
By Shawn Surmick
On June 27, Heritage Auctions held the anticipated first part of the William A. Strutz Rare Books Signature Auction. William A. Strutz was an attorney who built one of the finest private libraries of rare books in the country. The collection was meticulously created over several decades and featured some of the most valuable rare books ever printed. Anticipation leading up to the auction was quite high and even drew the attention of the mainstream news media. Rare book collecting is a key market in the antiques and collectibles trade that is not discussed as much as some other collecting markets. Let’s discuss some of the highlights of this auction, but be forewarned, some of these prices are going to shock even bibliophiles that follow this market.
We’ll start with the crown jewel of the sale, which was a first edition copy of Mary Shelley’s “Frankenstein” that debuted in 1818. Firsteditions of almost any book that originated from this time period are extremely scarce, and “Frankenstein”
is no exception. When “Frankenstein” was first published it actually came in three volumes. This copy is notorious for being an uncut original first edition publication with all three volumes, and the price paid reflects this because it sold for $843,750, which includes the 25-percent buyer’s premium. Next up was a first-edition copy of my all-time favorite book. F. Scott Fitzgerald lived a very tumultuous life and died at the tender age of 44. In that time, however, he became a prominent wellknown American author. His last book written was considered a failure when it first debuted in 1925, but, in my opinion, was his best. This book had a profound effect on me ever since I was exposed to it in both high school and college. Even if you yourself do not like classic literature, this is one book I would recommend, as the lessons and themes are universal in their scope, regardless of what year or time the reader is living in. The book, if you have not already guessed, is “The Great Gatsby.” This particular example was inscribed by the author and had its original coveted dust jacket intact. As a result, the book soared to an incredibly high price of $425,000, which includes the buyer’s premium. Make no mistake, however, that a very fine copy of a first edition “The Great Gatsby” can be had for several thousand dollars if one does not want it inscribed or care to pay an incredible sum to find one with its original dust jacket. Dust jackets, when offered with most iconic first editions that came bound in them,
increase the price exponentially for the few that survived intact.
Next up, we have another classic that has gained in popularity over the years. “The Hobbit” by J.R.R. Tolkien is a well-known book that first premiered in 1937. Propelled to popularity due to the “Lord of the Rings” movie trilogy, classic works by Tolkien are enjoying a renaissance of rediscovery from new readers. This first edition presentation copy is inscribed by the author and comes complete with its dust jacket, and soared to $300,000.
There were other wellknown books that were sold in this auction for recordbreaking prices, but I recognize I am not helping the market for rare books by focusing solely on the ones that sold for six figures. There are some other well-known first editions that sold for modest sums when compared to the offerings mentioned above. Arthur Miller’s “Death of a Salesman” is a classic that was first published in 1949. A first edition presentation copy of the book, inscribed by the author and containing its original dust jacket, sold in this same sale for $3,750, which again includes the 25-percent buyer’s premium. However, one must also realize that “Death of a Salesman” had no recent blockbuster movie as of late, like 2013’s “The Great Gatsby” or the aforementioned “Lord of the Rings” trilogy that helped propel some to new heights. In this regard, the rare book market is not unlike the vintage comic book market. Movies featuring these beloved characters
Unusual Buddy “L” Advertising
By Patricia and Allan Rosenblum
Most examples of Buddy “L” all steel 1920s toy product advertising focused on specific products, e.g. #208 bus/ motorcoach with or without a price and whether it was a wholesale or retail seller. Along with a brief description of the toy were references to its quality and sturdy
construction. Advertising was typically done in little booklets or toy trade magazines.
These two illustrated examples of Buddy “L” advertising are considered uncommon. The handout or palm card on ink blotter by the Lenz-Gaddis company was likely printed for the commercial “trade” and suggested a whole range or categories of Buddy “L” toys at this retailer
and distributor. Under the image reads, “This Little Pig Went To Market.”
The other example is a postcard format (likely 1930s) suggesting a Buddy “L” building (small castle) at a Santa Claus Toy Village Enchanted Forest located in southern Indiana. The picture suggests a magical scaled down castle filled with captivating dream
Continued on page 7
and stories based on their literary works can propel some of these books to new heights at auction, as any antique or collectible market is rooted directly in supply and demand. Seeing these books come to life on the silver screen can in turn increase demand for the original editions. This has been the norm in the vintage comic book market for decades now.
In conclusion, collecting rare books can be a fun, rewarding, and highly lucrative hobby. While some of these prices listed in this auction are definitely out of the reach of most collectors, there is still a lot of opportunity in this market. Right now, opportunity lies in key first edition books that were published in the 1980s and 1990s. Horror author Stephen King is seeing a resurgence of popularity as collectors attempt to assemble their own libraries of his first edition works. It will be interesting to see how the market responds to these offerings in just a few short decades. The rare book market also tends to be cyclical in nature and what is not popular today can easily become popular tomorrow because a lot of literary classics have universal themes that keep them relevant. Much like the last line of “The Great Gatsby,” the rare book market seems to “beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past.” Thanks for reading.

14 Sculptures To The Kingdom Of Cambodia
As Part Of Deaccession And Repatriation, Works Will Be Returned To The Care Of Cambodia
The Metropolitan Museum of Art recently announced that it is physically returning to the care of Cambodia 14 sculptures that the museum deaccessioned last year. The repatriation follows the launch of The Met’s Cultural Property Initiative, which includes undertaking a focused review of works in the collection as well as the hiring of Lucian Simmons in a newly created Head of Provenance position and additional provenance researchers. The 14 works, along with two sculptures already returned to the Kingdom of Thailand, were deaccessioned in connection with the Southern District of
New York’s investigation of dealer Douglas Latchford. The museum is continuing to review its collection of Khmer art and remains in constructive dialogue with Cambodia.
“The Met is committed to the responsible collecting of art and the shared stewardship of the world’s cultural heritage,” said Max Hollein, The Met’s Marina Kellen French Director and Chief Executive Officer.
“We have made significant investments in accelerating the proactive and collaborative research of our collection, and we are dedicated to acting promptly when new information arises, as demonstrated by this group
of sculptures. This is a milestone moment in our ongoing work, and we are honored to collaborate with Cambodia on this return. The Met greatly values our open dialogue with Cambodia, and we will continue to actively engage with colleagues there to arrive at constructive resolutions that further ongoing efforts and advance the world’s understanding and appreciation of Khmer art and culture.”
The works of art being transferred were made between the 9th and 14th centuries in the Angkorian period and reflect the Hindu and Buddhist religious systems prevailing at that time. A number of the
sculptures, including the bronze masterpiece The Bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara Seated in Royal Ease (late 10th ‘early 11th century) and the monumental stone Head of Buddha (7th century), remained on view in the museum’s galleries for Southeast Asian art, presented as the repatriated heritage of Cambodia, while arrangements were being made for their return.
At the time that the Thai and Cambodian works were deaccessioned, Mr. Phnombootra Chandrajoti, Director-General of Thailand’s Fine Arts Department, commented, “We are very pleased that the Met has
