Three Men And A Baby Make Cowan’s American History Auction Memorable By Susan Emerson Nutter Auctions are anything if not unpredictable. Ask Cowan’s Katie Horstman, who heads up this Cincinnati, Ohio, company’s American History Department. Horstman had worked tirelessly to prepare for Cowan’s American History Premiere Auction held June 22, and the day before the event was to take place, everything was ready to go. And then the unpredictable happened. “At about 3 a.m. the morning of the auction, Katie went on maternity leave just a tad bit early,” stated Eric Duncan, Cowan’s marketing director. “Actually quite early, which was a shock to us all, but a very happy event for Katie,” he added. When the phone call came in that Katie was going to be otherwise indisposed and would not be attending that day’s auction, like the close-knit group they are, Cowan’s crew rallied to guide this highly anticipated event to top sales. The interest in items documenting or giving a glimpse into our nation’s early history continues to be in high demand if the results from this Cowan’s American history event are any indication. Up for sale this day were approximately 500 lots of early photographs, documents, manuscripts, broadsides, flags, and more dating from the Revolutionary War, the Civil War, Late Indian Wars, World War I and II, and beyond. Early images are highly

Assembled by famed theater actor William J. Ferguson, who witnessed the assassination of Abraham Lincoln, an archive pertaining to the event realized $14,400.

Measuring 5.5-by-8 inches, this albumen photograph of the “Scouts of the Plains” that included western legends “Wild Bill” Hickok, “Texas Jack” Omohundro, and “Buffalo Bill” Cody descended through the Cody family and was the top lot of Cowan’s American History Premiere Auction held June 22. sought-after for their historical value and what they represent; for example the albumen photograph (Lot 458) of the “Scouts of the Plains”–“Wild Bill” Hickok, “Texas Jack” Omohundro, and “Buffalo Bill” Cody - sold for $15,600 (est. $8,000/$13,000). Prices reported include a buyer’s premium. “This image of these three western showmen has sold before at auction,” said Duncan. “But the albumen photograph we had for sale came with a wonderful provenance as it descended directly in the family of William F. Cody.” Duncan also noted future Cowan sales will be auctioning off the last Continued on page 2

few photos left in that same Cody family collection. This image was believed to have been taken by Rockwood or Gurney of New York City, circa 1873, and it is often said the photo documents the birth of the Wild West Show, showing three Western Legends together at the beginning of their short-lived partnership. In 1872, Cody and Omohundro appeared together in the stage show, “Scouts of the Prairie.” Both had served as guides in the hunting expedition of Grand Duke Alexei of Russia, as well as U.S. Generals Custer and Sheridan. A year later, Wild Bill Hickok joined them as the third star in

the renamed production, “Scouts of the Plains,” during the show’s second season. Hickok was a “loose cannon,” often going on stage inebriated. He also hated acting and left the tour a few months in. Omohundro left the show in 1877 to act with his wife. Cody, however, formed Buffalo Bill’s Wild West Show sometime between 1883 and 1884 and continued entertaining the masses for more than 30 years. When you combine collectors’ interest in historical images with the popularity of Abraham Lincoln, a winning bid of $11,400 (est. $5,000/$7,000) is the result. The lot that brought this price was the Frederick Hill Meserve, first galley proof of “The Photographs of Abraham Lincoln” (Lot 332), published by this New York author in 1910 (ultimately 1911). Cowan’s describes this lot as being “a unique and exceptionally important piece representing the first serious attempt to catalogue the photographs of Abraham Lincoln. Primarily silver gelatin with some albumen and salt prints, Lincoln biographer Carl Sandburg noted, “It is quite probable that certain Lincoln photographs would not have come to light but for Meserve.” This first galley proof (of 100) came from the Dr. and Mrs. Jack L. Smith collection of Lincolniana. And speaking of Lincoln, the personal collection of Lincoln assassination memorabilia (Lot 343) put together by the theater actor William J. Ferguson, a cast member of “Our American Cousin,” sold for $14,400 (est. $8,000/$10,000). Included in this lot was a large piece of the

Collector Anecdotes And Antics Dominaria “Dominates Magic The Gathering fanfare and little marketing. The first two printings of the game, called “Alpha and “Beta, respectively, are worth a good sum of money in the secondary market today, but as is common with most things that have a strong value in the collectibles market, that was never intended. The game’s original design team has stated multiple times that their original intent was to make sure that almost every card produced would never have a market value over $20 per card. This meant that in the beginning, reprinting the same card in a different set was quite common. Then in 1995, the company made a disastrous decision to market a set called “Chronicles. It was an expansion set that contained nothing but reprinted cards from earlier sought-after sets. Unfortunately, this decision angered core enthusiasts who paid high prices on the secondary market to obtain these thought-to-be-scarce cards. In

On April 27, 2018, Wizards of the Coast, a division of toy conglomerate Hasbro, released their long awaited “Magic: The Gathering expansion set known as “Dominaria. The company releases roughly three to four expansion sets per year in an effort to keep the collectible trading card game market fresh. Each new expansion set takes place on a different world, known as a plane, or a different part of “Magic: The Gathering’s multiverse. “Dominaria was highly anticipated because it was the original setting of the game back when it premiered in 1993. The game’s original creator, Richard Garfield, was brought back to help design the game’s setting to ensure it matched the feel of the original. Fan enthusiasm ran high,

and most stores that carried the product reported a complete sell-through of their first shipment of the new set. Ironically, the release of this set also contributed to a new wave of mass hysteria that echoed through the secondary market of previously released and now discontinued products. The market for vintage “Magic: The Gathering cards and products is now on fire. To understand why, we need to revisit how the game was handled in the beginning, as the answer to this mystery is buried in the past. Regular readers will know that I have been writing a lot of articles about “Magic: The Gathering related collectibles recently. When the game was created, few thought a collectible trading card game in the age of electronic entertainment would ever catch on. Fortunately for enthusiasts of the game, those skeptics were proven wrong. The game was launched with virtually no

has caused a direct and almost immediate spike in the value of previously released sets and cards that are part of the reserved list era. The trend shows no immediate signs of wavering, as there appears to be a crossover effect from investors in crypto-currencies like Bitcoin that choose to also invest in alternate assets like vintage “Magic: The Gathering cards, along with the greater antiques and collectibles trade. If you are holding any vintage “Magic: The Gathering products from the years 1999 or earlier, you are best advised to do a lot of research on both the cards or sets you have in your possession. Some of the most highly sought after cards are from the “Alpha, “Beta, “Unlimited, “Arabian Nights, “Antiquities, and “Legends expansion sets. If you are lucky enough to own any sealed products from these sets or from later sets like “Mirage, “Tempest, and “Urza’s Saga, you should check the value of these items by searching sold eBay auction listings. You might just be surprised how much your holdings are now worth. I have been collecting the earlier “Magic: The Gathering products for awhile now and can honestly say that even I am surprised just how much some of this stuff has increased in price.

order to appease the true enthusiasts of the game, Wizards of the Coast made its most influential and controversial decision in the entire game’s history on March 4, 1996. The company released what would be become known as the reserved list, a listing of hundreds of popular game cards that would never be printed again in the history of the game. Some of these cards had print runs of less than 20,000 units or less and as a result of the reserved list, these cards have become highly sought after on the secondary market. However, to appease players more than collectors, Wizards of the Coast also vowed to never add any additional cards to the reserved list. This meant that any set created after the reversed list could have every card in it reprinted at will. This was done to make the game more available to hardcore fans. As expected, some enthusiasts worried how the reserved list would affect the game over the coming years. Ironically and contrary to popular belief, most reserved list cards did not increase in value exponentially due to creation of the list. In fact, up through the early 2000s, most of the popular reserved list cards could be had for under $100 or less, but then came the speculators. Thanks in part to the internet and the fact that prices of some of these highly desired cards could easily be manipulated due to having a fixed

supply, many speculators saw opportunity in some of these cards. Couple this development with the advent of thirdparty card grading courtesy of companies like PSA and Beckett, and a recipe for both imminent disaster and mass speculation was born. By 2010, most collectors of “Magic: The Gathering were in the silent majority, with players overtaking the core of the game’s enthusiasts. By 2012, the first reported reserved list buyouts were starting to become a topic of ongoing discussion within the trade. Well-financed buyers were buying out large quantities of the most popular reserved list cards. These buyers would then resell the cards back into the market at a slow pace to capture the newly created higher price point due to the cards not being readily available to purchase. It was the perfect melding of supply and demand, and more than one college-level economics thesis was written on the topic. Today, the reserved list is in full force, but no new cards are being added to it. This has caused some speculators to pause before putting mass amounts of money in newly released “Magic: The Gathering products, but this is also pricing out collectors who have not been able to acquire any of the most sought-after vintage cards. Flash forward to today, and the release of “Dominaria added to mass hysteria that is now becoming commonplace in the “Magic: The Gathering secondary market. The set ushered in a new sense of nostalgia for the game’s history. This

firm determined the coin was authentic and graded the discovery as NGC XF 45. “It’s like finding an original Picasso at a garage sale,” NGC Chairman Mark Salzberg said in a statement. “It’s the discovery of a lifetime.” Heritage Auctions will present the previously unknown 1854-S Liberty Head Half Eagle in its Platinum Night Auction during the American Numismatic Association’s World’s Fair of Money in Philadelphia on Thursday, Aug. 16.
