Three Men And A Baby Make Cowan’s American History Auction Memorable By Susan Emerson Nutter Auctions are anything if not unpredictable. Ask Cowan’s Katie Horstman, who heads up this Cincinnati, Ohio, company’s American History Department. Horstman had worked tirelessly to prepare for Cowan’s American History Premiere Auction held June 22, and the day before the event was to take place, everything was ready to go. And then the unpredictable happened. “At about 3 a.m. the morning of the auction, Katie went on maternity leave just a tad bit early,” stated Eric Duncan, Cowan’s marketing director. “Actually quite early, which was a shock to us all, but a very happy event for Katie,” he added. When the phone call came in that Katie was going to be otherwise indisposed and would not be attending that day’s auction, like the close-knit group they are, Cowan’s crew rallied to guide this highly anticipated event to top sales. The interest in items documenting or giving a glimpse into our nation’s early history continues to be in high demand if the results from this Cowan’s American history event are any indication. Up for sale this day were approximately 500 lots of early photographs, documents, manuscripts, broadsides, flags, and more dating from the Revolutionary War, the Civil War, Late Indian Wars, World War I and II, and beyond. Assembled by famed theater actor William J. Ferguson, who witnessed the assassination of Abraham Lincoln, an archive pertaining to the event realized $14,400.
Measuring 5.5-by-8 inches, this albumen photograph of the “Scouts of the Plains” that included western legends “Wild Bill” Hickok, “Texas Jack” Omohundro, and “Buffalo Bill” Cody descended through the Cody family and was the top lot of Cowan’s American History Premiere Auction held June 22. This image sold for $15,600.

Prices reported include a buyer’s premium. “This image of these three western showmen has sold before at auction,” said Duncan. “But the albumen photograph we had for sale came with a wonderful provenance as it descended directly in the family of William F. In This Issue This large, 103-inches-wide, ca. 1915 handpainted panel recording a scene from the Blackfoot War by a chief known as Big Spring sold for $23,750. The war record panel is one of many painted by elderly Blackfoot warriors used for display in the hotels at Glacier National Park.
