Shawn McCloy of Robesonia, Pa., was an avid Lionel train collector who began train collecting at age 8. As a gift, his first item was a helicopter car. That car instantly became his favorite possession until his uncle accidentally broke it. It would be many years until McCloy could afford to buy another train car. After getting married, McCloy decided it was time to purchase his first “new” train set, the “Blue Comet.” As an active member of the Train Collectors Association (TCA), he built a massive O-gauge collection by attending train meets in Hamburg, Allentown, New Holland, and York. Many of his rare and unique pieces came from those group meets. He bought hundreds of O-Gauge engines, cars, and props, many that are high-end steam and diesel engines and tenders. The collection also includes a variety of

transformers, including what were his two favorite “ZW Transformers.” Many of the items remain in their original boxes. His passion for trains stayed with him his entire life. Besides being a collector, McCloy was skilled at train repair and restoration. This lifelong collection of prewar to modern trains, train sets, and accessories is currently up for auction at Blum’s Auction House, located at 501 Schuylkill Mall Road

Exhibition To Address Canova’s Only Work Created For America In 1816, the North Carolina State House in Raleigh commissioned a full-length statue of George Washington to stand in the hall of the State Senate. Thomas Jefferson, believing that no American sculptor was up to the task, recommended Antonio Canova (1757–1822), then one of Europe’s most celebrated artists. The first and only work Canova created for America, the statue depicted the nation’s first president in ancient Roman garb, per Jefferson’s urging, drafting his farewell address to the states. It was unveiled to great acclaim in 1821, and people traveled from far and wide to see it. Tragically, only a decade later, a fire swept through the State House, reducing the statue to just a few charred fragments. Canova’s “George Washington” examines the history of the artist’s lost masterpiece, probably the least well known of his public monuments. It brings together for the first time Canova’s full-sized preparatory plaster model (which has never left Italy), four preparatory sketches for the sculpture, and related engravings and drawings. The exhibition also includes Thomas Lawrence’s 1816 oil portrait of Canova, which, like the model and several sketches, will be on loan from the Gypsotheca e Museo Antonio Canova in Possagno, Italy, the birthplace of the artist. The exhibition is organized by

Another highlight was the Speciel Land Charte von Pensilvanien, Neu Jersey, Neu York, a 1750 map by Lewis Evans published in Frankfurt, whose alluring designations such as “The Endless Mountains” may have been responsible for the subsequent German emigration to the state. something no one else can easily find. 9. Know that video games are less of a liquid asset than pinball machines: Pinball machines have seen exponential growth in the secondary market, while the prices of most classic and well-known vintage arcade games have fallen in price. As a result, there are fewer buyers in the market. Expect to lose at least 20 to 30 percent of the value when selling most games. Exceptions abound, but that is a rough estimate to abide by. 8. It is best to buy from an established dealer: Parts for video arcade games are not as difficult to find as parts for vintage pinball machines. That said, they still need work and maintenance. This is quite costly, and while buying a working machine privately may seem like a good idea, sooner or later it is going to break down. The cost to fix and repair a vintage video game is almost just as much to fix a vintage pinball machine, thanks in part to the cost of labor. 7. Make sure you have the

Venture into any video arcade still in business in the United States, and you are bound to notice that today’s arcade games are almost nothing like what they used to be. Most video arcades still doing business in this day and age are generally part of an established theme restaurant or bar that caters to young adults. Aside from the ever-popular Chuck E. Cheese restaurants geared towards kids, most active video arcades are part of a bigger overall experience. Inside any of these establishments, you’ll find games that are geared toward redemption, games that allow players to win prizes, or games that are based on popular movie properties like “Star Wars or “Ghostbusters. Originality in the arcade game business died when players realized they could get their fix in the comfort of their own living rooms thanks to the rise in technologically advanced home video games. This is one of the many reasons that vintage video games are so popular. It should be stated I hardly ever advise anyone to buy a vintage arcade video game for their home. Pinball machines are a much better investment and require almost the same amount of upkeep and maintenance, if not more. Still, as someone who grew up in the late 1980s and early ’90s, I
recognize that nostalgia doesn’t always listen to reason. So, if you are determined to buy a vintage arcade game for your home, listed below are some of my top tips. 10. Avoid the common classics: Yes, you read that correctly. You can emulate and play a game like “PacMan, “Defender, or “Donkey Kong on almost any smartphone or home video game system. As such, if you are buying a classic game, realize that you are going to have to really like the game you are buying and actually want to play it. Go after a favorite obscure game that isn’t easily emulated on home video game consoles and smartphones. For instance, I would love to own an original “Splatterhouse arcade game manufactured by Namco. Finding one is next to impossible. Owning a “Donkey Kong machine just doesn’t do anything for me because I can play that game on my Nintendo 3DS anytime I want. The value in most arcade games comes from owning

room: Some of the most popular arcade video games on the secondary market take up a lot of space. Games like “Afterburner, “Galaxy Force, and “Star Wars: The Arcade Game all had moving or stand alone cockpits that added to the experience. These machines were quite big and bulky, and moving these kinds of machines can be quite costly and take up a lot of real estate in any size home. Know that while most of these games are popular, they can be quite difficult to sell as a result. Many boyfriends and husbands have spent time in the proverbial “dog house for assuring their significant other that they had the space for one of these machines when they did not. If buying any kind of game that allows for a sitdown experience, now the dimensions of the game you are buying. 6. Know the market: Research, research, and more research. Log on to www.KLOV.com, the Killer List of Video Games. Here you will find info and detailed reviews of almost every arcade video game ever released. Want to
warranty or optional maintenance plan if offered by an established dealer: Screen burn and fried circuit boards are quite common with vintage arcade machines. The technology presented in the 1980s and even the 1990s was just not on par with what is available today. As such, a lot of games experience these issues, among other malfunctions, on a regular basis. Repairing these defects can be quite costly. 2. Patience pays: There is absolutely no rush to buy most machines. A lot of arcade games had production runs of several thousand to tens of thousands of units, sometimes more, sometimes less depending on the success of the game. “Pac-man is rumored to have a production run of over 100,000 units alone. Take your time and wait for a game that is special to you, especially if you are buying your first game. 1. Have fun! This is the best advice I can give you. Buying your first arcade video game can be a daunting experience. However, if it is done right, it can also be one of the most nostalgic experiences a vintage video game enthusiast can ever have!

Top Tips For Buying A Vintage Arcade Video Game
know if Sega’s “Golden Axe had a sequel (hint: it did, “Revenge of Death Adder, released in 1992)? You will find out here. 5. Never buy for investment: I cannot stress this enough. Unlike buying a vintage pinball machine, video arcade games are tough to sell, but, of course, will if the price is right. That price is always much less than what you paid, trust me. This is one market in the greater antiques and collectibles trade that just cannot be depended upon for any kind of financial return. If you are lucky to buy and enjoy a vintage arcade game and later sell it for a profit, you are just that—lucky. Success in the secondary market belongs to those who have the knowledge and patience to refurbish and fix these kind of games. 4. Don’t buy for cash flow: Much like vintage pinball machines, buying a vintage arcade game to place in your business can be a recipe for disaster. The wear and tear the game will endure will far exceed any incoming cash flow, especially at 25 to 50 cents a play. It is just not worth it. 3. Get an extended

Ocean Liner Memorabilia Earns Top Honors At Weiss Auctions Letter Written Aboard Titanic On Ship Stationery Sells For $22,600
This six-cent U.S. air mail stamp signed in pen by Albert Einstein and dated (“4.1.39”), a Scott Catalogue C23 example, sold for $1,860.
In good condition, a crisp and clear Confederate 1/9th scroll pattern ambrotype in a thermoplastic case, identified as Matthew McCauley of Danville, Va., realized $2,100.
A handwritten letter, penned on RMS Titanic stationery and written aboard the ship by a member of the Holverson family, en route to New York, sold for $22,600. not just coffee items but also syrup dispensers, talcum tins, signs and other rare pieces. “It was a great auction across all categories, with internet and floor bidding very strong,” said Philip Weiss of Weiss Auctions, adding the final gross was around $220,000. Online bidding was by Proxibid.com and LiveAuctioneers.com. Phone and absentee bids were also accepted. The auction was held in Weiss Auctions’ gallery at 74 Merrick Road in Lynbrook, N.Y. The 2.5-page letter penned aboard the Titanic was on Titanic stationery, with the raised White Star Line and proper watermarks on the paper, which was waterstained in areas. The letter was unsigned, but was consigned by descendants of the author, a member of the Holverson family. They were en route to New York at the time. The letter was hand-addressed, “My Dear Mother.” Oscar Alexander Holverson and Mary Aline Holverson were passengers aboard that fateful maiden voyage. Mrs. Holverson, 35, was rescued in lifeboat #8, but Oscar, 42, wasn’t as fortunate. He perished in the disaster. It’s assumed, since
the unposted letter was written aboard the ship, that the couple’s intent was to mail it, along with some postcards, after arriving in New York. The SS Andrea Doria, of the Italian Line, was approaching the coast of Nantucket, Mass., on its way to New York City on July 25, 1956, when it collided with the Swedish vessel MS Stockholm, resulting in one of history’s most famous maritime disasters. The original life preserver ring was recovered the following day by Alan Ades, a Naval officer aboard a rescuing Coast Guard cutter. The pale blue tinted glass clock presented to just a handful of first class passengers aboard the SS Normandie’s maiden voyage was produced as a collaboration between the renowned French designer Lalique and Leon Hatot of the ATO clock company. The letters “NORMANDIE” spelled out nine of the clock’s 12 face numbers. The hands were made of tin and showed light wear. All prices quoted include an 18 percent buyer’s premium. Albert Einstein and Abraham Lincoln both made guest appearances. A six-cent U.S. air mail stamp signed in pen by Einstein and dated (“4.1.39”) flew off for $1,860. The stamp was a Scott Catalogue
C23 example. Einstein’s signature was bold and clear. A lock of Abraham Lincoln’s hair finished at $1,680. Also, a collection of cigar labels and salesman samples fetched $3,680. A mixed media-on-canvas artwork by Kevin Red Star (b. 1943) titled “Mr. and Mrs. Choke Cheeries,” signed upper left, topped out at $2,300. A Disney Melody Time animation production set-up cel trimmed to image size and presented on a Courvoisier background, depicting a teary-eyed Little Toot tugboat sailing past a mile marker, realized $2,530. Also, a crisp and clear Confederate 1/9th scroll pattern ambrotype in a thermoplastic case, identified as Matthew McCauley (Danville, Va.), changed hands for $2,100. An 1865 lithographed sanitary map of New York City, titled “Sanitary and Topographical Map of the City and Island of New York” (Egbert L. Viele, Robert Craighead), hand-colored and printed on

Guantanamo, and served as its Chief Judge from 2007 to 2009. Virginia Williams is a Texas native and graduate of North Texas State University. She served as a teacher overseas for the U.S. Department of Defense and met her husband during their mutual time in military service. She was a kindergarten teacher in the Cranston, R.I., public schools for nearly three decades and has been deeply involved with The Lincoln Forum since is inception. Frank J. Williams is also an acclaimed author whose books include “The Emancipation Proclamation: Three Views (with Edna Greene Medford and Harold Holzer; Louisiana State University Press, 2006); “Judging Lincoln (Southern Illinois University Press, 2007); and, with William D. Pederson and featuring a chapter by MSU Giles Distinguished Professor Emeritus of History John F. Marszalek, “Lincoln Lessons: Reflections on America’s Greatest Leaders (Southern Illinois University Press, 2009). His most recent book is “Lincoln as Hero (Southern Illinois University Press, 2012), and he is currently at work on a companion volume, “Grant as Hero. A popular lecturer, Williams not only speaks semiannually at The Lincoln Forum, but appears as well at Civil War Round Tables, Lincoln Groups, college campuses, and other organizations, writes often for magazines and newspapers, and teaches at both the Roger Williams School of Law and the U.S. Naval War College in Newport, R.I. In 2006, MSU’s Pre-Law Society awarded Williams its prestigious Distinguished Jurist Award, and in 2011, Williams gave Mississippi State’s fall commencement address. He told graduates
that young leaders of America, “are charged with an important duty – the preservation of democracy. He is also the winner of the Illinois Order of Lincoln, that state’s highest honor, presented during the bicentennial year of 2009. Williams served as well on both the national U.S. Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial Commission (appointed by then-Mississippi Sen. Trent Lott in his role as Senate Majority Leader) and as a board member of its successor organization, the Lincoln Bicentennial Foundation. At MSU, the Frank and Virginia Williams collection of Lincolniana will be housed in the new $10 million addition to Mitchell Memorial Library, scheduled to open later this year. More than 100 items from the collection will be showcased in a nearly 1,200-square-foot gallery, organized around themes such as family, politics, the law, the presidency, the Civil War, slavery, assassination, and Lincoln in popular culture. The new space will be designated as the gallery for “The Frank and Virginia Williams Collection of Lincolniana. The library addition will also house the
Buffalo Bill Center of the West in Cody, Wyo. Museums are welcome to join Blue Star Museums throughout the summer. “Whether they want to blast off at a science museum, take a walk through nature, or encounter animals at the aquarium, Blue Star Museums will help service members and their families create memories this summer, said Blue Star Families chief executive officer Kathy Roth-Douquet. “This fantastic collaboration with the NEA brings our local military and civilian communities together and offers families fun and enriching activities in their home towns. We are thrilled with the continued growth of the program and the unparalleled opportunities it offers. More information about the Brandywine River Museum of Art can be found at www.brandywine.org. The museum is located at 1 Hoffman’s Mill Road, Chadds Ford, Pa. Ulysses S. Grant Presidential Library, the Ulysses S. Grant Association, and the Congressional and Political Research Center. “The Mississippi State University Library is indebted to Frank and Virginia Williams for entrusting this unique and precious collection of Lincolniana to our care, said MSU Dean of Libraries Frances Coleman. “Our goal is to display its great treasures on a rotating basis while making the entire archive available to researchers throughout the world by cataloging each piece, digitizing the unique materials, and developing a website for the collection. John Marszalek, who in addition to being an MSU professor emeritus serves as executive director and managing editor for the Ulysses S. Grant Association and the Ulysses S. Grant Presidential Library, said Williams is one of the nation’s leading Lincoln scholars and his collection is the best private collection in the nation. Marszalek emphasized, “This donation of this priceless material to MSU, when linked to our marvelous Ulysses S. Grant collection, will make MSU and the Ulysses S. Grant Presidential Library a true national center for the study of the American Civil War.

couple didn’t come looking for anything specific, but they left with feed bags, two chairs, a basket and a small outdoor table for their patio. Customers weren’t just looking for small decorative pieces, however. Jeff Huntsberger, a vendor from Orrville, Ohio, also did well over the weekend with his oak and industrial furniture. Huntsberger’s furniture is dated from around 1900-20 and includes dining tables, display cases, and other highend wood pieces with industrial metalwork accents. “We did well. We sold six pieces of furniture,”

Despite the rain on day one of the Scott Antique Markets Extravaganza, shoppers and vendors alike came out over the weekend to buy and sell their treasures. “We’ve seen a lot more people today,” said Liz Bullock, a vendor from Columbus, Ohio, referring to day two of the show. “I think they’ve been pretty happy. There’s a good variety here, and that’s what customers are looking for.” Bullock, who sells hats, pictures, lamps, and many other items, saw customers carrying a variety of purchases. “They like boxes, iron pieces, maybe yard art, unusual pieces, old utensils,” she continued. “We sell a lot of hats from England - bobby hats and top hats.” That variety could be seen
merchandise. They were selling everything from antique furniture, jewelry, and tools to restored pieces and even quality handcrafted art. One such booth was owned by Bob Sines, from Grand Rapids, Mich., who set up right next to the ticket booth entrance. Sines described his booth as full of “unique antiquities.” Old windows were lined up along a fence; tables were full of pottery, cookware, and primitives; and the ground in front of his booth included handmade wooden pieces and tobacco baskets. “Tobacco stuff is insane right now,” commented Sines, adding he has also noticed people buying steel art and other things to use while designing and decorating their houses. Pamela and Lester Thompson, who came to the show from Rocky Fork Lake to shop, had fun browsing all afternoon for treasures. The
