Morphy Auctions’ New Collaboration Off To Roaring Start At Cody Old West Show And Auction

Ca. 1930s Edward H. Bohlin Sterling Silver Parade Saddle Led An Impressive Lineup, Selling For $50,820

An affinity for the lore and history of the American West was the common denominator that connected premier dealers with enthusiastic collectors at Brian Lebel’s 33rd annual Cody Old West Show and Auction held June 23, 24 and 25 at the Community Convention Center in Santa Fe, N.M. A muchanticipated highlight of the long weekend was the June 24 on-site auction of Western and Native American relics, produced in association with Morphy Auctions. A review of the show portion will appear in next week’s issue.

broncos, Texas Longhorns and covered wagons and lavishly mounted with silver conchos, it charmed bidders, who pushed its price all the way to an estimatetopping $50,820.

As dazzling as the saddle was, it had to fight for the spotlight when a pair of Tony Lama “El Rey II” handmade cowboy boots crossed the auction block.

1966 catalog and subsequently used as a roadside attraction on Route 66, the gold-leaf-inlaid boots were adorned with an incredible 54 carats of diamonds, rubies and sapphires. The fancy footwear settled within estimate at

The tradition of Western artistry also extends to spurs and bridles, as seen in several prized auction entries.

These one-of-a-kind pair of Tony Lama “El Rey II” handmade cowboy boots custom-ordered from Luskey’s 1966 catalog, premium-grade black calf with inlaid gold leaf and 54 carats of diamonds, rubies and sapphires, sold within estimate for $24,200.

The lively specialty auction corralled many of the top collector categories, including cowboy antiques and collectibles, Native American artifacts, silver saddles, horse tack, antique and historic firearms, Hollywood cowboy memorabilia, Western fine art, Old West gambling and saloon items, and Western decorative arts and furniture. In total, the auction took in $922,500 inclusive of buyer’s premium. The average selling price per lot was a buoyant $3,000.

To no one’s surprise, the magical Edward H. Bohlin name commanded top-lot honors in the form of a ca. 1930s sterling silver parade saddle. An extravagant creation by the legendary saddlemaker to the stars, it featured both elaborately tooled leather and finely engraved silver components, and bore a strong resemblance to a style identified in Bohlin catalogs as the “Marietta.” Decorated with bucking

A fantastic pair of G.S. Garcia silver-inlaid spurs executed in Pattern No. 16, known as “‘Rattlesnake,” lived up to their name with meticulouslydetailed decorations of writhing rattlers and conchos engraved with images of their feared overhead

enemies, eagles. Pattern No. 16 Garcia spurs are shown in the 1997 book, “Bit and Spur Makers in the Vaquero Tradition” (Ned and Jody Martin). The auction pair sold near high estimate for $27,830. Matching the spurs dollar for dollar was a Yuma (Arizona) territorial prisonmade hitched horsehair bridle with American flags on the reins and romal and diamond swells on the brow and nose bands. Horse tack created by prisoners between 1885 and the 1920s is avidly pursued by both equine and Westernart collectors. Yuma prison productions, with their complicated diamond designs and unique color combinations, are among the most desirable of all. Against an estimate of $15,000-$20,000, the auction bridle galloped to a final price of $27,830.

Exceptional Native American artistry was on display in a ca. 187080 Cheyenne beaded cradle. Decorated in a traditional geometric

motif in a colorful medley of turquoise, yellow, red, dark blue and green beads, the well-constructed cradle was backed by Native-tanned buffalo hide and mounted to wood slats studded with brass tacks. It ended its bidding run at $22,990.

The sale included seven artworks by Will James

(Canadian/American, 1892-1942), all with themes involving cowboys and horses. Of that selection, a signed, dated (’34) but untitled graphite-on-board artwork depicting a cowboy roping a Longhorn steer fared best, finishing within estimate at $36,300.

Prior to auction day, many dozens of bidders had been following a scarce two-page Nov. 14, 1904, pictorial “wanted” poster offering a $2,000 reward for Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. The poster had been Issued by Pinkerton’s National Detective Agency after determining it was “George” (in actuality, Robert) Parker and Harry Longbaugh (Cassidy and Sundance)

The Wadsworth Atheneum has acquired an outstanding work by Rosalba Carriera (also known as “Rosalba”), the most famous woman artist working in the 18th century and admired as a pioneering and brilliant pastellist. “Portrait of a Gentleman” (ca. 1730) was created when she reached the height of her career, portraying the upper echelons of society with a deft hand and observational sensitivity. It is the first example of the artist’s work in the Wadsworth Atheneum’s collection.

Rosalba started her career as a miniaturist, but she became best known for her skill with pastels, her technical and artistic innovations elevating the uniquely powdery medium to great popularity among artists and collectors. Royalty, cardinals, and cognoscenti across Europe commissioned portraits and allegories from her. It quickly attracted admirers and younger followers such as Jean-Étienne Liotard and Maurice Quentin de la Tour.

“‘Portrait of a Gentleman’ is a work of rare elegance and grace; it is also an exemplary work by Rosalba. The freshness and radiance of the colors as well as the vaporous quality of the surface truly distinguish this work and lend to its liveliness. That we are as yet unable to definitively identify the sitter is secondary to the captivating beauty of this portrait,” said Oliver Tostmann, Susan Morse Hilles curator of European Art at the Wadsworth.

celebrated pastellist of the 18th century. We are proud to welcome ‘Portrait of a Gentleman’ into the Wadsworth’s collection and look forward to sharing Rosalba Carriera’s brilliance with our visitors very soon,” said Matthew Hargraves, director of the Wadsworth Atheneum.

“Portrait of a Gentleman,” ca. 1730, is a pastelon-paper, laid down on canvas, 23.6-by-18.3 inches, courtesy of the Charles H. Schwartz Endowment Fund, Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art.

First identified as the legendary art collector Pierre Crozat and, later, Louis Armand II de Bourbon, Prince de Conti, neither figure has been verified beyond a doubt. The sitter poses with torso in profile and his head positioned toward the viewer, nearly achieving contact while maintaining a slight aloofness. With his magnificent shoulder-length wig, damask justaucorps coat, and splendid red vest embellished with gold embroidery and buttons, this handsome sitter was clearly someone of status and rank.

Collector Chats With Peter S. Seibert

This Week: I Miss Antiques In New England

Now granted these shops were definitely of a certain type and look. They were filled with copper luster, brass candlesticks, painted or refinished mule chests and hooked rugs of lighthouses. They were somewhat ubiquitous, to say the least.

So, let me begin this column by saying that I am writing the column speaking in generalities and not about specific shops. I am sure there are great malls and shops all over New England, but this column is about their overall decline in the last several decades.

I have been lucky enough to have lived and worked in many parts of the country and thus seen the antiques market from all different perspectives. This goes from the mega antiques malls in the Midwest to the southern shops that sell items picked from antique malls in Pennsylvania. New England always had a soft spot in my heart because no matter where you went from Vermont to Maine to the New Haven Colony, you could find great shops.

Over the last year, I have traveled the coast to Maine, and then this year just returned from a jaunt up the Hudson into Vermont. In both cases, to quote my friend Mr. Frost, I chose the road less traveled in my hunt for antiques. Wow, the road less traveled was vacant of single and group shops. It was painful.

In Vermont, we usually stayed closed to the Shelburne Museum (an institution where you can still go to see lots of real stuff and not the single object in a white painted room with 50 panels of labels). My antiquing would start at the three big co-ops near Middlebury and then proceed up the highway to Burlington to hit several more. If I needed more to look at, I could cross over the lake and head past Ticonderoga to see lots of little home owner-shops that dotted the landscape.

This time, in the span of a

full week, I found only one shop that was open and had goods. And the shop was really a revenue front for the rock band that used most of the space as a rehearsal hall. Wow! The co-ops were gone and replaced in many cases by the equally ubiquitous farm-totable stores. For most of a certain age, farm-to-table stores are better known as roadside produce stands. But in New England, they have gone upscale and now charge $10 for a pint of strawberries. Where did the crusty old New England couple who have two rooms packed full of stuff go?

The saddest part for me was a large barn and house shop where 40 years ago I purchased my first piece of antique furniture, which was, by a modern standard, a rather mediocre country Empire table. But I had just gone to work while in high school as a tour guide at a museum that had one much better than the one at the shop. The seller had brought it from an auction and gladly sold it to me for $75. It filled the back seat of my mom’s two-door coupe all the way home and today it is my wife’s bedside table. That shop is now gone. The house and barn are there and look better than

ever but the back porch with the new finds is sadly a thing of the past.

I write this lament only because as much as I hear signs of changes for the better in the antiques trade, and I really do believe there are many positive signs, the loss of place is really harsh. I do not think my kids or their friends will perhaps ever see again that lovely farmhouse shop where two rooms had the best of treasures.

“Born to collect” should be the motto of Peter Seibert’s family. Raised in Central Pennsylvania, Seibert has been collecting and writing about antiques for more than three decades. By day, he is a museum director and has worked in Pennsylvania, Wyoming, Virginia and New Mexico. In addition, he advises and consults with auction houses throughout the MidAtlantic region, particularly about American furniture and decorative arts. Seibert’s writings include books on photography,Americanfraternalsocieties and paintings. He and his family are restoring a 1905 arts and crafts house filled with years’ worth of antique treasures found in shops, co-ops and at auctions.

Decades Of GM Excellence Showcased In Carlisle

From The Early 1900s To Modern Day, Displays, Guests, And Activities Wowed Thousands

With the fast and furious nature of a two-day car event, the 2023 Carlisle GM Nationals came and went in the blink of an eye. From the moment the gates opened at 7 a.m. on June 23 through the time the last awards were handed out late on June 24, nearly 1,000 show cars and thousands more guests and vendors had an experience that will no doubt have them making plans for 2024.

This year’s Carlisle GM Nationals hosted a few shows

within the show, a bevy of special/anniversary displays, unique and historic rides, and, of course, great vending partners within the automotive flea market and Manufacturers Midway. The shows within the show included the 15th offering of the Solid Lifter Showroom, 3rd Generation Camaro and Firebird Nationals, Novas at Carlisle, and Corvettes for Chip.

Anniversary/themed displays focused on 40 Years of the

Fiero, 30 Years of the 4th Gens, a 50th celebration of the Buick Regal, 120+ Years of Buick, and cars from the Malaise Era.

Within the “120+ Years of Buick” display, guests could revel in decades of production, including a 90+-year-old 1932 Buick 57 courtesy of the AACA Museum Inc. and some low mileage and rare option Buick Regals, while the Fiero celebration hosted a rare prototype four-seater, along with great examples of Pontiac’s popular two-seat sports car.

In the 3rd Generation Camaro & Firebird Nationals area, a massive tent and accompanying Building R gallery gave guests a nice trip down memory lane by way of both the cars and the memorabilia on display. One of the 3rd Gen display cars was built stateside but immediately exported to Germany and only recently returned to the states with its German military owner.

For the 4th Gens, a gathering of well-preserved and performance-based Camaros

and Firebirds drew the attention of those on the south side of Building T and shared tent space with the 3rd Gens near Building R. This included

Landmark Gift To Reading Public Museum From The Estate Of Dr. Luther W. Brady Jr. Donation

Was Also Made To George Washington University

The Foundation for the Reading Public Museum is pleased to announce a landmark gift from the estate of Dr. Luther W. Brady, Jr., a collector and world-renowned radiation oncologist from Philadelphia. A longtime friend and patron of the museum, Dr. Brady’s generosity will enrich the museum and the community for years to come. The gift includes over 120 paintings, sculptures, and works on paper by 20th and 21st century artists. The museum will display many of the works in an exhibition in the Jerome I. Marcus American Gallery and the Irvin and Lois E. Cohen Gallery of Modern and Contemporary Art from July 8 through Jan. 7, 2024.

One of the largest and most valuable bequests in the museum’s 120-year history, the donation “will unquestionably transform the permanent

collection of modern and contemporary art,” says curator Scott A. Schweigert. “The gifts from the estate will join the approximately 100 works previously donated by Dr. Brady between 2002 and 2018. Dr. Brady’s art collection was built over a period of approximately seven decades, during which he forged personal relationships with many of the worldrenowned painters and sculptors. We are so grateful to Dr. Brady and his keen eye for high quality works that will now enrich our visitors’ experience at RPM.”

The gift includes works on canvas by iconic Abstract Expressionists Hans Hofmann, Robert Motherwell, Helen Frankenthaler, Adolph Gottlieb, Esteban Vicente, Friedel Dzubas, and Kenzo Okada. These paintings will join works by American

Modernists Jules Olitski, Frank Stella, Louise Nevelson, George Segal, and Nancy Graves, among others.

Additional works represent British artists Howard Hodgkin, Henry Moore, Lynn Chadwick, and Antony Gormley. Also featured are works by important Native American modernist Fritz Scholder and Kevin Red Star and paintings by Paul Pletka, who heroicizes Indigenous peoples in his work. Works by leading Philadelphia-area artists such as Liz Osborne, Thomas Chimes, Edna Andrade, Murray Dessner, Diane Burko, David Fertig, and Jimmy Leuders are also among the paintings to enter RPM’s collection as part of the Brady bequest.

Brady’s estate also made a major concurrent donation of

To Mark Anniversary Of Albert Einstein’s 1923

Nobel Prize Address Centennial, Book About His Life Now Available

“Einstein: The Man And His Mind” Published

It’s been 100 years since Albert Einstein gave his Nobel Prize lecture titled “Fundamental Ideas and Problems of the Theory of Relativity” on July 11, 1923. The centennial of this event is a reminder of the remarkable history of Einstein’s Nobel Prize and the address. Now, a book is available chronicling the life of the renowned physicist.

Titled “Einstein: The Man and His Mind,” the one-of-a-kind, hardcover, 4.4-pound book contains rarely seen photos of Einstein, as well as preserved letters, manuscripts, journals and even equations written in

“This book is fascinating reading for people interested in scientist biographies,” said DiRuggiero. “It’s also an exquisite photo research opportunity for scholars of the history and philosophy of physics.”

From today’s perspective, one might think the most acclaimed scientist since Isaac Newton would have won a Nobel Prize for the theory virtually synonymous with his name, relativity. But this did not happen, according to Berger, in his essay titled “Einstein’s Nobel Prize Address Centennial.” “The path to the Nobel Prize was anything but smooth,” noted Berger.

to his theory of relativity. Among his most strident detractors, Allvar Gullstrand (1911 Nobel laureate in Physiology or Medicine), said, “Einstein must never receive a Nobel Prize, even if the whole world demands it.”

One of the most famous photographs of Einstein, signed and dated (1938) by him, is twice signed by Lotte Jacobi, the female portraitist and Einstein’s favorite photographer.

Einstein’s hand. The book helps place in historical context his ideas about time, gravity, quantum theory and cosmology. It’s for sale on Amazon for $51.99.

The book comprises an astounding private collection of Einstein memorabilia owned by Dr. Gary Berger, with annotations and commentary by Dr. Berger and his two co-authors: Michael DiRuggiero (owner of Manhattan Rare Book Company in New York City) and Dr. Hanoch Gutfreund (a physicist at Hebrew University of Jerusalem who also wrote the book’s foreword).

“The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences had repeatedly rejected Einstein as a Nobel Prize recipient despite his 60 nominations, most of them for relativity, over a decade,” wrote Berger. “In 1921, the Committee for Physics became deadlocked, resulting in no award that year. The following year, the Academy awarded Einstein the unused 1921 Prize, but pointedly not for the theory of relativity. The prize was for his discovery of the law of the photoelectric effect.”

Einstein’s 1905 publication on the photoelectric effect was undoubtedly worthy of a Nobel Prize. It explained the behavior of electron emission from metals when struck by light. His theory was a foundation of quantum mechanics. But it was surprising to many that he didn’t receive the award for his most significant scientific contribution, the general theory of relativity, which is the basis of virtually everything we know about the universe’s structure, history, and behavior.

Some Nobel Prize committee members blocked Einstein because they didn’t comprehend relativity theory since he was Jewish, a pacifist, a theorist who didn’t perform experiments. These few individuals objected to him personally and, specifically,

In 1922, a compromise ended the Swedish Academy’s position of denying Einstein the prize he deserved. He was granted the 1921 Prize “for his services to Theoretical Physics, and especially his discovery of the photoelectric effect.” But, to clarify that not all of his contributions were being recognized, the award citation had an unusual qualification excluding the theory of relativity. Einstein’s Nobel diploma is unique in stating what the prize was not awarded for.

Einstein did not attend his Nobel award ceremony. Instead, as scheduled, he had embarked on a five-and-a-half-month trip to the Far East, Palestine, and Spain. Although he intended to present his Nobel lecture at the 1923 award ceremony in Stockholm, that was not to be the case either.

In March 1923, Svante Arrhenius, chairman of the Committee for Physics, wrote to Einstein, suggesting he not wait until December to deliver his Nobel lecture in Stockholm but instead address the Scandinavian Society of Science in Gothenburg in July on the 300th anniversary of the city’s founding. Although he’d been instrumental in excluding relativity from the Nobel award, Arrenhius suggested the address be about relativity. Einstein accepted the invitation.

As with everything else concerning his Nobel award, Einstein’s lecture on relativity presented in Gothenburg on July 11, 1923, became a source of controversy. His detractors objected to it being accepted as an official Nobel lecture since it hadn’t been delivered in Stockholm and

The recently published book, “Einstein: The Man and His Mind,” helps place in historical context Einstein’s ideas about time, gravity, quantum theory and cosmology.

was not about the topic for which the prize was awarded. But Arrhenius had already submitted the lecture manuscript for inclusion in the Nobel Foundation’s yearbook, Les Prix Nobel. Although questioning its qualification, the Swedish Academy allowed it to stay in the publication.

Einstein’s lecture has this footnote in the later English translation (but not the original German version): “The Lecture was not delivered on the occasion of the Nobel Prize award and did not, therefore, concern the discovery of the photoelectric effect.” The unusual events (or, more accurately, non-events) regarding Einstein’s Nobel Prize and Nobel lecture had lasting effects.

For Einstein, the award apparently meant little by the time he received it besides the money he had promised his wife, Mileva, in their divorce agreement. He neither attended his award ceremony nor delivered a lecture to the Swedish Academy on the topic of the award citation.

When Einstein listed his most significant achievements and honors years later, the Nobel Prize was conspicuously absent. Perhaps this omission reflects the emotional residue of the contentious history surrounding his Nobel Prize.

Another novel entry was an original late-19th century Yellowstone National Park Observation Wagon, which would have been used as a sightseeing vehicle for tourists visiting the area. It rolled to the upper end of its estimate range, closing

at $26,620.

Immediately after the show and auction, Brian Lebel remarked: “We couldn’t have been more pleased with the entire weekend. The show dealers were happy and busy, the auction buyers were thrilled with their purchases, and the auction consignors got the prices they wanted. It’s an incredibly difficult trifecta to pull off, but through the teamwork of both the Old West staff and the Morphy staff, we hosted an incredibly successful event.”

“It was a genuine pleasure for Morphy’s to work

cooperatively with the Lebel team. There was a high level of professionalism throughout our first collaboration, and now we’re setting our focus on the next Lebel’s and Morphy’s joint event, which will take place under one roof in Las Vegas,”

followed Dan Morphy.

The Jan. 26 and 27, 2024, edition of Brian Lebel’s Old West Events and Cody Old West Show and Auction will be held in tandem with Morphy’s Las Vegas Antique Arms show in a 130,000square-foot, three-ballroom
