George Washington Indian Peace Medal Acquired

By The Art Museums Of Colonial Williamsburg Rare Silver Medal Was Made in Philadelphia In 1792 When George Washington was inaugurated as the first president of the United Sates 232 years ago in April 1789, the nation’s leaders were well aware that “peace medals” given as diplomatic gifts to American Indian leaders had vital impact. Considered to be of paramount historical significance and the highest rarity, most of the authentic engraved Indian peace medals of the Washington presidency are found in institutional collections; of the medals made in 1792, the first year they were issued and awarded primarily to Southern Chiefs, perhaps a dozen are known.

Colonial Williamsburg has recently acquired one the finest of only approximately six small-sized medals currently recorded. Crafted in Philadelphia, of silver by an unidentified silversmith, this Washington Indian peace medal is 5.25 inches tall by 3 3/16 inches wide and weighs 76.15 grams. The medal is now on view in the Backcountry section of “A Rich and Varied Culture: The Material World of the American South,” a long-term exhibition at the DeWitt Wallace Decorative Arts Museum, one of the newly expanded Art Museums of Colonial Williamsburg.

“Acquisition of this well-preserved medal provides Colonial Williamsburg an outstanding opportunity to interpret the story of relationships between the United States government and the American Indian nations residing in the southern states,” said Ronald L. Hurst, the foundation’s Carlisle H.

The custom of giving peace medals has a long history in America. By the French and Indian War, Anglo-Americans began producing impressive medals in hopes of competing against varied European interests for the allegiance of diverse Native American groups. These include medals commissioned by the Quakers struck in Philadelphia for the 1757 Treaty of Easton and Virginia’s “Happy While United” medals of 1780.

The newly formed War

Department staff, responsible for overseeing Indian affairs, found it challenging to procure these indispensable silver medals. Without the necessary minting machinery, each had to be handmade and painstakingly engraved by expert craftsmen in order to convey the importance embodied in these large, high-quality medals. The work was time consuming and expensive, but the United States government considered it worth the price as they were enthusiastically appreciated by the recipients.

In 1792, a spectacular design was created that began the custom of featuring a prominent image of the sitting president on the front of the medal. This tradition continued for nearly a century until the Indian

peace medal program ended in 1891. The new design, which was very large and oval, presented a view of George Washington helping to support a pipe being smoked by a traditionally dressed American Indian warrior. On equal footings, the president appears in his military uniform while his ally wears armbands, a feathered headdress and a large oval medal around his neck. Behind the warrior rests his tomahawk placed on the ground.

This peace ceremony is depicted at the edge of a wood with the warrior below the branches of a tree and Washington before an agricultural scene. Below is the legend, “GEORGE WASHINGTON, PRESIDENT 1792.” The reverse side features an engraving of the Great Seal of the United States.

“I can’t put into words how thrilled I am to be adding this incredibly rare medal to Colonial Williamsburg’s holdings,” said Erik Goldstein, Colonial Williamsburg’s senior curator of mechanical arts and numismatics. “Though it fills a tremendous void in the collection, I never thought it would be possible, and the fact that it’s of the finest style is just icing on the cake.”

These resplendent objects were seen as supreme emblems of importance and position by both parties. Official gifts of the United States, they were made in three sizes and given according to the rank of the accepting Chief.

The Pennsylvania National Fire Museum in Harrisburg, Pa., was smoking hot with bids during the July 9 evening auction conducted

by Enterline Auction Service. The sale featured 226 lots of firefighting antiques, collectibles, and memorabilia from various consignors that sold to a packed house. The buyer’s premium as well as proceeds from a concurring pig roast went to the museum, which is in the process of raising funds to replace its air-conditioning system. Antique Dealers Association Of Berks County One-Day Show Returns Kempton Antiques Show Set For Oct. 16 The popular Kempton Antiques Show is scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 16, at the Kempton Community Rec Center, 83 Community Center Drive, Kempton, Pa. Kempton is a rural northern Berks County town roughly between Allentown and Hamburg, north of Route 78.

The well-lit and newly renovated Community Center will feature about 45 exhibitors featuring a full variety of their finest antiques and collectibles. The range of items is extensive, and this is a dealerfriendly show.

The show is presented by the Antique Dealers Association of Berks County (ADABC) and is the group’s

seventh annual show at this venue.

It used to be held in Leesport. The show was not held in 2020.

Show hours will be from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission will be $7 per person, $6 with show card, ad, or this press release. Food will be available, and parking is free. The show will follow CDC suggested regulations.

they found 14 frames and vintage Indian and HarleyDavidson motorcycles. For three days, the crew diligently dug through the buildings on the property and uncovered 53 motorcycles, hundreds of parts and memorabilia.

Now, the two combined collections in their entirety will be sold to the highest bidder, live at the fairgrounds and online, via Proxibid.com. The catalog, plus a video, can be viewed on the VanDerBrink Auctions website by visiting www.VanDerBrinkAuctions.co m. “Many of the motorcycle parts will be just for on-site bidders, so it’s best to attend the auction in person,” said Yvette VanDerBrink of VanDerBrink Auctions.

Several motorcycles are certain to attract attention.

One is the 1947 Indian Chief motorcycle, an older restore that’s green and gold and with all the stainless-steel parts supposedly dipped in gold (although it has not been tested). The bike had been touring in a display from Bearor, and it ran when parked. It features a V2 4-stroke, V-Twin motor with suicide chain drive transmission, white wall tires with fringe and a big white leather seat with fringe, a truly unique motorcycle.

Then there’s the 1976 Harley-Davidson FLH motorcycle with a sidecar that Bearor dubbed “The Joker.” Known as

The single-owner lifetime collection of Robert “Bob” Bearor, an incredible assemblage of Harley-Davidson and Indian motorcycles, parts and memorabilia dating as far back as 1908, to include rare and important barn find motorcycles that are finally seeing the light of day, plus vintage cars, midget race cars, antique tractors, chainsaws, vintage fishing lures and more, will all come up for bid on Saturday, Aug. 14, at the Vermont State Fairgrounds in Rutland, from 10 a.m. 6 p.m. Eastern time, by VanDerBrink Auctions, based in Hardwick, Minn.

Bearor, who passed away in 2019, was a dedicated car and motorcycle enthusiast and a self-described wild-man who, along with his wife, Christine (who went by “Teenie” because of her diminutive stature of just 4 feet 9 inches), always surrounded themselves with vintage cars and motorcycles, especially Harley-Davidsons, which the couple would ride to shows or just for fun, often in matching outfits. The two got married in a 1958 Corvette.

Teenie survives her husband.

Along the way, Bearor befriended Ed Flynn, a kindred spirit wild-man and the owner of an Indian Motorcycles dealership in Bennington, Vt. Flynn’s collection was just as impressive as Bob’s, and, upon his passing and with the blessing of his widow, Flynn’s massive inventory of Indian motorcycles (two of which were unearthed from under his house), as well as hundreds of parts and memorabilia from the dealership, became part of Bearor’s collection.

In May of this year, a team from VanDerBrink Auctions, plus some motorcycle enthusiasts from New York, went to the Bearor property to inventory the Flynn portion of the collection. In a chicken coop,

His commitment to personal relationships and professional service led him to co-found the Christiana Bank and Trust Company in Greenville, Del., in 1992, serving as its chairman. He helped lead this dream to become an established and profitable bank and trust company that was later acquired by National Penn Bank as part of its strategic growth plan. In 2010, Wilmington Savings Fund Society, WSFS, acquired the Christiana Trust assets from National Penn Bank.

Herdeg loved American history and 18th-century decorative arts, committing his life, in partnership with Judy, to research, collecting and philanthropic leadership.

Their lifelong passion started in 1963 with the reconstruction and restoration of the William Peters’ house, a 1750s Georgian brick structure, which, through their efforts, was listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

The house, which became their family home for nearly 60 years, was the impetus for a lifetime of research, scholarship and collecting. Their love of 18th-century design expanded into the landscape with an emphasis on native flora and plants introduced before 1775. With his lovely

companion, John travelled to both British and American historic sites, societies and libraries to research their collection, leading to scholarly articles and a forthcoming book. The culmination of his love of antiques, research and story telling, “The Stories They Tell...From the Herdeg Collection” will soon be available through The New England Historic Genealogical Society.

As a collector and scholar, John committed 50 years of service to the Henry Francis du Pont Winterthur Museum, Garden & Library, serving as chairman of the board for nine years and participating on numerous board committees throughout his long tenure. Winterthur will be honoring John and Judy with the H. F. du Pont Award this fall for his dedication and leadership. He also served as trustee at Historic Deerfield Inc. in Massachusetts and president of the 1103 Market Street Foundation, a public charity dedicated to preserving the Historic William Merrick Mansion. He was a trustee and on the executive committee at the Woodlawn Trustees Inc. and also served as a supervisor and other positions for Pennsbury Township, Chester County, Pa. Herdeg was a member of a

number of historical organizations, including the Walpole Society, a group dedicated to the appreciation and study of American decorative arts, architecture and history; New England Historic Genealogical Society; the American Antiquarian Society; and The Society for Colonial Wars in the State of Delaware.

Herdeg is survived by his wife of 60 years, Judy, and three children and their spouses: Judith (Leli) Leland Herdeg Wilson and her husband, Bill; Andrew Carpenter Herdeg and his wife, Maggie; and Fell Coolidge Herdeg and his wife, Cara; and their seven grandchildren: Molly and Abigail Wilson, George and Ceci Herdeg, and Emma, Benjamin and Sam Herdeg.

A memorial service will be held in the fall. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions be made to the H. F. du Pont Winterthur Museum, Garden & Library (c/o Philanthropic Office, Winterthur Museum, Garden & Library, 5105 Kennett Pike, Winterthur, Del., 19735), New England Historic Genealogical Society - American Ancestors (Development Office, 99-101 Newbury St., Boston, Mass., 02116), or Historic Deerfield (80 Old Main Street, Deerfield, Mass., 01342).

Philadelphia in early 1792 “be liberally supplied with presents….and of distinctive silver Medals,” in addition to 20 more sets of medals for “the principal Chiefs of the Chickasaws and Choctaws,” as Knox referred to them. In addition to those sent to Southern tribes, at least two went to Seneca Chiefs from New York, like Red Jacket, who posed wearing his 1792

medal in the 1820s.

Production of the large format oval medals ended in 1795, likely because of the expense and difficulty of having them hand-made, perhaps compounded by an increasing need for them. Today, the engraved Indian peace medals of George Washington’s presidency remain at the pinnacle of early American numismatic and historical treasures.

Born in Buffalo, N.Y., on Sept. 15, 1937, the son of Franklin Leland and Susannah Estelle Clark Herdeg, John spent his youth in Gowanda, N.Y. He graduated from Deerfield Academy, Princeton University and the University of Pennsylvania Law School. In 1961, John married his lifetime love, Judith (Judy) Coolidge Carpenter, moved to Connecticut and joined the Connecticut Bar while working in New York City as an assistant to the Trustee of the bankrupt New York, New Haven and Hartford Railroad.

Shortly thereafter, Judy and John moved to Wilmington, Del., where he joined the Delaware Bar and the Wilmington Trust Company as a staff attorney.

After a successful 20-year career, John left Wilmington Trust with the title of senior vice president as the head of the Trust Department and founded the law firm of Herdeg, du Pont & Dalle Pazze LLP. As a trust and estate attorney, Herdeg found tremendous joy by helping individuals and families through complicated financial and personal challenges and planning for their futures.

Why I say that is there are so many examples of coverlets out there that passing on one that is a wreck is easy since the odds stand that you will find one in better shape.

And finally, my tip is to look for unmarked early examples. There are many wonderful coverlets that are available at bargain prices because they are unmarked.

Strike out and learn about weaving and go find an early unmarked coverlet for under a $100 and call it a good day.

This is another in a series of articles about undervalued antiques in the marketplace.

About 30 years ago, there was an article in Art and Antiques Magazine about undervalued treasures. The contents of the article has stuck in my mind over the years because most of the categories they picked are still bargains. They noted that Japanese scroll paintings are undervalued because the collector literature is limited and thus many in the West have limited access to identifying works. It also noted that American Empire and English Jacobean oak remain priced as they were in the 1920s with little change, not in fashion then and still not in fashion today.

Under Americana, the authors were challenged to

regional connections of where they were made.

For me, coverlets are an amazing window into life in rural America in the 19th century. With their incredible colors, varied patterns and ties to specific communities and regions, they show us how people truly lived and worked in the past. An Indiana coverlet is as distinctive from a Lancaster, Pa., coverlet as one made in New York. What puzzles me is that collectors will spend substantial amounts on anonymous quilts made late in the 19th century but eschew handwoven and identified coverlets from the 1830s. Do they look great on a bed?

Absolutely, and particularly around the holiday season.

The pricing on coverlets today is far from where it was when I first became aware of them in the late 1980s. Today, finding coverlets under $1,000 is very easy, and if you are willing to pursue later examples from the 1870s, then prices under $100 are common. What about condition?

Now that is the rub with coverlets. Jump onto eBay, and you will see lots of coverlets for sale. Missing fringe, splits

find something that was not high priced in the 1990s.

Samplers and blanket chest and frakturs were hot then and still command strong prices. But the category of items they picked as being highly undervalued were 19thcentury jacquard coverlets.

Produced by small shops primarily in the Mid-Atlantic and the Midwest, jacquard coverlets were popular from the second quarter to the end of the 19th century. Often with corner blocks identifying the maker, the year made and the original owner, they also feature wonderful replicating motifs such as trains, houses, roosters, birds, etc.

I remember early in my career coveting a Seifert coverlet from Mechanicsburg (Cumberland County, Pa.) that was priced several thousand dollars. For a young collector, it might as well have been a million. Over the years, I watched the price of coverlets creep up, then stall, then dip.

Many husbands and wives collected coverlets together. To understand them is to become caught up in the art and precision of how they were made and also the

A manuscript penned by Sir Isaac Newton (1642-1727), with mathematical notes and calculations relating to Book III of his iconic scientific work “Principia,” changed hands for $118,750 in University Archives’ online-only auction of rare autographs, manuscripts, artwork and comic art held on May 26. It was the top-selling item of the 409 lots in the sale.

“We’re still experiencing strong prices and keen new interests in many areas,” said University Archives president and owner John Reznikoff.

“We’ve sold over $3 million of items at auction so far this year, and we are not even at the halfway mark. This is another banner year.”

The rare and important twopage (front and back) manuscript, written by Newton ca.

1715-25, was believed to relate to Newton’s “De Mundi Systemate” or Book III of the “Principia.” It was a set of mathematical notes containing several types of calculations and data points. One side was just calculations; the other side had a short note by Newton along with a calculation.

The text of the note reads, in part, “And that of Aldebaran and of Spica and that of Arcturus counting these longitudes not from the middes of the signes but from the Vernal Equinox/ And so of the rest of the fixed stars.” Newton was referencing the longitudinal position of Aldebaran and other stars, plus data points relating to his revolutionary study of comets.

Isaac Newton is widely recognized as one of the greatest mathematicians and most influential scientists of all time and was a key figure in the scientific revolution. In “Principia,” he formulated the laws of motion and universal gravitation that formed the dominant scientific viewpoint (until it was superseded by Einstein’s theory of relativity). Einstein was also featured in the auction.

Items pertaining to Newton are exceedingly rare and highly sought after by collectors. The last time a Newton “Principia” related autograph manuscript came on the market was October 1999 and, before that, 1991 and 1979. Newton was a notorious hoarder of paper and of his own manuscripts; the preservation of this manuscript note was unusual even for him.

“I Am a Fugitive From a Chain Gang” (1932). The movie’s title certainly grabs your attention, with Paul Muni starring as James Allen, a returning World War I veteran who is caught up in a robbery gone awry and winds up doing a 10-year stretch on a southern chain gang. Allen escapes his brutal captors and heads to Chicago, where he becomes a big success in the construction business, only to be betrayed by his blackmailing wife (Glenda Farrell).

“I Am a Fugitive From a Chain Gang” is very big with collectors. One of the more attractive items is the French Grande stone litho movie poster (47-by-63 inches) titled “Je Suis Un Evade,” which features stunning artwork by Joseph Koutachy. One example in restored condition on preservative linen brought a A Swedish one-sheet poster top bid of $717 at auction.

Stroud became a worldrenowned ornithologist while previously doing time at Leavenworth Penitentiary, where he kept his birds and studied avian diseases, eventually publishing the book, “Diseases of Canaries,” in 1933.

The film’s standard one-sheet advance poster (27by-41 inches), which depicts Tim Robbins as Andy standing in a cleansing rain following his miraculous prison escape via a sewer pipe, is a beauty. One example in rolled, near mint condition hit a high bid of $388.38 at auction.

“Cool Hand Luke” (1967).

Paul Newman has the title role of hell-raiser Luke Jackson, who is sentenced to two years hard labor at a Georgia penal farm for decapitating parking meters during a drunken bender. The prison camp is run by the brutal Captain (Strother Martin), who famously tells young “Cool Hand” Luke: “What we got here is…failure to communicate.

George Kennedy won a Best Supporting Actor Oscar for his role as the big, bruising convict Dragline.

“Papillon” (1973). Based on the improbable memoir by Henri “Papillon” Charriere, “Papillon” stars Steve McQueen in the title role.

Wrongly convicted of murdering a pimp in Paris, Papillon is sentenced to life at the notorious penal system in French Guiana, also known as “Devil’s Island.” Here, the irrepressible Papillon mounts multiple escape attempts in his quest for freedom and revenge.

“San Quentin” (1937). Along with Alcatraz, San Quentin, California’s oldest prison, immediately grabs your attention. No less a persona than Humphrey Bogart wound up in notorious San Quentin in 1937 as Joe “Red” Kennedy, who is sent to the Golden State’s big house following a robbery conviction. Also along for the stretch are Pat O’Brien as Stephen Jameson, the captain of the prison guards, along with Ann Sheridan, Barton MacLane, Joe Sawyer and the lovely Veda Ann Borg in strong support. The movie was shot on location at San Quentin State Prison.
