Gottshall (1899-1993) resided much of his life on Mechanic Street in Reinholds, Pa. Reinholds is a small West Cocalico Township town in northern Lancaster County close to the Berks County border. Advertising, photography and ephemera collectors, rejoice! Papermania Plus, the Northeast’s largest vintage advertising and paper show, will return to the XL Center in Hartford, Conn., on Saturday, Aug. 24. The show has been running continuously since 1975. Papermania Plus offers serious collectors and the merely curious a treasure trove of vintage items, including postcards, movie posters, photographs, rare books, fine art prints, baseball cards, maps, sheet music, autographs, and much more. Even items such as old stock certificates from long-bankrupt companies, valuable for their design, can be found at the show. Then there’s the “Plus” part, which means pins, tin-types, vintage bottles, metal

and wooden signs, and advertising samples of all kinds. “The show (Papermania Plus) showcases the importance of printed material before the internet,” says show promoter Gary Gipstein. “The breadth and depth of material on display here is staggering. I can’t believe some of the things that our vendors bring in. Just the availability of old postcards alone is amazing, tens of thousands of postcards with historic scenes of places around the world. It’s amazing. And that’s just a start.” The show is one of the largest on the circuit. Vendors from across the country will bring items to sell. The public is encouraged to bring in their own treasures for an appraisal event from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Among Continued on page 2

Collecting historic photography is an area that I have been loath to write about. For nearly three decades, I have been collecting historic photography. My first book was on the subject, and when I am down and out, I jump onto eBay to look for items for the collection. As a student of history, I find that photographs rarely if ever lie, so they are excellent records of a time and place. As someone who appreciates the impact of changing technology, photography is a case study in the history of the industrial revolution. But finally, historic photography is a topic to collect because it is so much fun. It is affordable, materials are available, and you can specialize in any one of a thousand different areas. I enjoy Civil War history but cannot afford to collect the flags, guns, or swords of the battles. But the photographs, the faces of the men who fought there, are immensely affordable. In the evenings, I flip open my albums and study the images of Ambrose Burnside’s magnificent sideburns. I ponder George

McClellan and his failures in the Peninsula campaign. Grant and Lincoln stand out to me through their images in my collection. And the best part is that none of these images singularly cost me more than $100. Where else can you find real Civil War items priced reasonably? Of late, living in the West, I have begun to collect photographs taken during the early 20th century of the great wonders of the West, such as Yellowstone, Grand Tetons, and Yosemite, which were favorite topics for photographers. The imagery was often hand-colored and was intended to fit in with the Arts and Crafts second period bungalows in the 1920s. Studying the images not only reveals information about the subject and the photographer but also the use of photography as the new thing to have in decorating your home. Historic photography, for my two cents, is probably the most untapped resource and

photographs out there, it is a field where the chances of being stung are much smaller than other areas. The fakes that exist (and I have bought a few) are usually of subjects that are highly collected, including military, firemen, presidential, men with guns, and Native Americans. The other advantage in collecting photographs is that they can be easily stored. My

Fiscal year 2018’s extraordinary attendance of 7.35 million was the result of a particularly exceptional year for the Met that included attendance for the exhibitions “Michelangelo: Divine Draftsman and Designer” (with 702,516 visitors) and “David Hockney” (with 363,877), and the first two months of “Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination,” which attracted a record 1,659,647 visitors to the Met Fifth Avenue and the Met Cloisters during its run from May 10 to Oct. 8, 2018. FY19 is the first full fiscal year under the museum’s new admissions policy, and results show that the Met continues to draw consistently high visitation. Exhibitions Besides “Heavenly Bodies,” another 2018 exhibition that contributed to the museum’s strong attendance in FY19 was “The Roof Garden Commission: Huma Bhabha, We Come in Peace,” which closed on Oct. 8, 2018, with 383,714 visitors. The Metropolitan Museum of Art announced that it welcomed more than 7 million visitors to its three locations, the Met Fifth Avenue, the Met Cloisters, and the Met Breuer, in the fiscal year that ended on June 30 (FY19). The museum’s renowned collection and a range of exhibitions and programs drew audiences throughout the year. Standout exhibitions included a seminal display of works by Eugène Delacroix; a groundbreaking presentation of art from medieval Armenia; a timely exploration of art and culture from the ancient Middle East; and two shows that are still on view, “Play It Loud: Instruments of Rock & Roll,” a celebration of the artistry of the iconic instruments of rock and roll, and “Camp: Notes on Fashion,” an exploration of the exuberant nature of the camp aesthetic through fashion. “The Met is both a global destination and a hometown museum, and we’re honored to have welcomed so many visitors this past year from near and far,” said Daniel H. Weiss, president and CEO of the museum. “Our mission is to connect people with the art of all times and cultures, and it is inspiring to see the museum resonating with such a large audience.” Continually one of New York City’s most visited tourist attractions for domestic and international audiences, the Met draws a wide range of visitors. In the past fiscal year, international tourists accounted for 28 percent of the museum’s visitors. Local visitors from the five boroughs of New York City made up 35 percent of

Columbia River Gorge By Amy Gale The Columbia River Gorge is one of the great beauty spots of the Pacific Northwest. America’s fourth largest river flows through an 80-mile canyon of precipitous cliffs, majestic fir trees, and pounding waterfalls. All that sublime landscape was lost on the pioneers who embarked on leaky rafts nearly two centuries ago. To them, it was a treacherous waterway, the final ordeal on the Oregon Trail. “Rained most all day,” wrote one pioneer mother in 1847. The next day’s journal, “Rainy day.” And so on, until the entry which reads, “Rain all day. This day my dear husband died.” Those hardships were remote to the day-trippers cruising up and down the river

in steamboats a generation later. The future of the gorge as a tourist destination was in place by the late 19th century. The river was politically important because it formed the border between Oregon and Washington, and it was a vital link to the inland farms and orchards. But any development would have to take into account the value of its natural wonders. In 1913, construction began on the Columbia River Highway. It was located on the north bank and incorporated the latest advances in engineering with an appreciation for the picturesque. The intention was not purely aesthetic. “We will cash in, year after year, on our crop of scenic beauty, without depleting it in any way,” said Sam Hill, who was president of the Washington State Good Roads Association. The highway attracted a following among nature lovers in the 1920s, when it was described as the “the finest scenic drive in the world.” Best of all, it was

there is the terrain. The Goldendale Stonehenge is set amidst rolling sagebrush and cloudless blue sky. Nearby is Hill’s house. It is a chateau-like structure made of concrete, Hill’s medium of choice. Hill never realized his grand plans for its furnishing and equipment. His financial losses brought construction to a halt in 1917. That the house should be turned into a museum came at the suggestion of Loie Fuller, an American avant-garde dancer. Fuller was at the center of the circle of larger-thanlife characters who befriended the frontier eccentric. She enjoyed an intense and controversial friendship with the alluring Queen Marie of Romania. The queen appreciated Fuller’s experiments with lighting and costume. In turn, her artistic and literary efforts were encouraged by Fuller. Another friend was Alma de Bretteville Spreckels, the San Francisco artist’s model who married a sugar magnate. The basis for this friendship was the sculpture of Auguste

promoting Parisian haute couture. When Spreckels died in 1968, the Maryhill Museum was a remote stronghold of French art. From Goldendale, you can make the drive back to Portland in two hours. Even better, why not stay the night? There is plenty of accommodation throughout the gorge, ranging from campsites and family motels to high-end, reservationrequired establishments. rose. According to the Taxpayers League, it was the most expensive comfort station ever built. The planning and construction coincided with the last years of World War I. While farmers and businessmen were protesting the price of the mahogany stall doors, soldiers in France were suffering the horrors of trench warfare. A monument to the local men who died in the war is in the town of Goldendale, at the eastern end of the gorge. It is a full-scale replica of Stonehenge. When the site was dedicated in 1918, it was erroneously believed that the original Stonehenge had been built for human sacrifice. “Humanity is still being sacrificed to the Gods of war” was the message of Sam Hill, who commissioned the monument. There are, of course, differences between this Stonehenge and the prehistoric prototype. For one, the Neolithic builders did not have the convenience of working with poured concrete. Then

Many were acquired by Hill through Fuller, though some were donated directly by Fuller. The fin de siècle collections include Art Nouveau glass from Spreckels. Spreckels, ever curious and receptive, also acquired for the museum the Théâtre de la Mode, the French fashion mannequins that toured America after World War II,

There was an unfinished and empty house. Hill was a showman, not a connoisseur. What really mattered was securing the queen’s attendance at the ceremony. The locals had never seen anything like it. The Art Bridges + Terra Foundation Initiative makes possible a unique exhibition partnership that complements this outreach. The generous support allows us to engage in a deep level of collaboration, learning and innovation.” In the first set of exhibitions, partner museums will present artworks from the Smithsonian American Art Museum’s collection in focused installations that address interests particular to each museum. Selected works include paintings by David Hockney, Edward Hopper, Georgia O’Keeffe, Fritz Scholder, Alma Thomas and Domingo Ulloa. These exhibitions will be on view at the partner museums beginning in September 2019. The Smithsonian American Art Museum has received a nearly $2 million grant from Art Bridges and the Terra Foundation of American Art to support a five-year exhibition partnership with five museums in some of the fastest growing cities and states in the western region of the United States. The partner museums, known collectively as the American West Consortium, are the Boise Art Museum; the Nevada Museum of Art in Reno; the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art in Eugene, Ore.; the Utah Museum of Fine Arts in Salt Lake City; and the Whatcom Museum in Bellingham, Wash. The partnership includes a two-part exhibition program and professional development sessions. The project is the latest in a transformative effort, the Art Bridges + Terra Foundation Initiative, to expand access to outstanding works of American art nationwide. A joint program of Art Bridges and the Terra Foundation for American Art, the initiative supports multiyear, multi-institutional partnerships among groups that include a metropolitan museum working with institutions in primarily non-metropolitan areas. Sharing collections and resources, these collaborative partners create a series of exhibitions that engage local communities. “As the national museum for American art, the Smithsonian American Art Museum believes it is our responsibility to share our most valuable resource—our collections—with the American people, including those who are not able to visit Washington, D.C.,” said Stephanie Stebich, the Margaret and Terry Stent director at the Smithsonian American Art Museum. “In addition to the hundreds of individual artworks that we loan to exhibitions around the world, SAAM has a longstanding traveling exhibition program that

Winterthur Acquires Two Exceptional Historic Paintings Intimate Family Scenes By John Lewis Krimmel And François-Jules Bourgoin Depict Early American Life

“Self-Portrait of John Lewis Krimmel with Susanna Krimmel and her Children” by John Lewis Krimmel (1786–1821) is an oil-on-canvas, 14-by-12 inches, 1810–11.

“Family Group in a New York Interior” by François-Jules Bourgoin (1786–1821) is an oil-on-canvas, 30-by-42 inches, 1807. interesting objects of the kind found in the Winterthur collection. The eldest son sits on a fancy Windsor chair, painting with watercolors. His younger sister below looks toward the viewer, showing a watercolor in her hand, possibly a metamorphosis booklet used by German Americans for instructing children in religious and moral values. Susanna sits on a low chair with rockers, probably a nursing chair. Behind her, a fly cloth is draped over the clock on the chest of drawers. Above the clock hangs George’s portrait and two drawings. This painting of Krimmel’s family reinforces Winterthur’s strong collection of Krimmel materials, which includes two genre scenes and a series of extraordinary sketchbooks. “It is an intimate scene,” said Stephanie Delamaire, Ph.D., associate curator of fine art at Winterthur. “And it shows with such delightful details how everyday objects were being used.” The painting is the former property of the Westervelt Warner Collection of American Art. It was previously in the Schwarz Gallery, Philadelphia, and at the Duke Kahanamoku Estate, in Hawaii. The exquisite 30-by-42-inch “Family Group in a New York Interior,” signed and dated “J. Bourgoin pt / New-York-1807,” is a conversation piece, or family picture, painted in oil-oncanvas by the elusive FrançoisJules Bourgoin. Bourgoin was a painter, miniaturist, and engraver known to have exhibited portraits, landscapes, seascapes, history paintings, and mythological scenes. He is often confused with FrançoisJoseph Bourgoin, a rococo painter of French royal entertainments who was active in Paris during the second half of the 18th century. A student of German painter Anton Raphael Mengs and Italian painter Franceso Guiseppe Casanova, François-Jules Bourgoin is

listed in several Paris Salons (1796, 1808, 1810, 1812). “In some ways, Bourgoin is a big question mark,” said Delamaire. “Very few pieces by him are known,” and little is known about his life, other than he spent a significant part of it in the Americas. Beside this New York family interior, Bourgoin also painted several scenes in Jamaica and Saint-Domingue: “French Soldiers Fighting the Black Population in Santo Domingo,” “View of a field on a Caribbean Island,” and “The Kingston Racetrack, Overlooking PortRoyal, Jamaica,” suggesting that he might have been among those who moved to the United States as a result of the Haitian Revolution. “Family Group in a New York Interior” is the first of Bourgoin’s oeuvre associated with New York. It is especially interesting for the way it contextualizes many pieces of furniture as well as utilitarian and decorative objects, such as the Argand sconces above a marble mantelpiece adorned with neoclassical motifs; the dressing glass on a Pembroke table for the young girl at the left of the composition; the portable writing desk on top of a dropleaf table with an open drawer showing a wax stick, ink stand and quill ready for use; and the marble-topped server (or chest of drawers), where a Sheffield-plated tea urn and teapots have been placed. This painting’s detailed representation of material culture not only makes it an ideal object of study for Winterthur’s visitors, researchers, and students, the picture also present opportunities for further research into the life of this under-studied artist and its connection to the history of American art and the Revolutions in the Atlantic world. As for the family represented, Delamaire said, “There are lots of possibilities to explore.” About Winterthur Museum, Garden and Library Winterthur, known worldwide for its preeminent collection of American decorative arts, naturalistic gardens, and research library for the study of American art and material culture, offers a variety of tours, exhibitions, programs, and activities throughout the year. Winterthur Museum, Garden and Library is pleased to announce its acquisition of two important paintings with significant stories to tell: “SelfPortrait of John Lewis Krimmel with Susanna Krimmel and her Children” (1810–11) by John Lewis Krimmel (1786–1821) and “Family Group in a New York Interior” by François-Jules Bourgoin (1786–1821). German-American John Lewis Krimmel is often referred to as the first genre painter in America. Born Johann Ludwig Krimmel in 1786, in the family of an established baker of fine pastries of Ebingen in Württemberg, Germany, Krimmel immigrated to Philadelphia in the aftermath of Napoleon’s invasion of German territories. Following his older brother, George, to Philadelphia in 1809, Krimmel was to become George’s assistant in business. About a year after his arrival, however, Krimmel decided to pursue a career as an artist. Self-trained, he died 11 years later at the age of 35 in a drowning accident, soon after being elected president of the Association for American Artists and while preparing his most prestigious commission, “The Landing of William Penn at Newcastle in October 1682.” “Self-Portrait of John Lewis Krimmel with Susanna Krimmel and her Children” was likely painted early in the artist’s career in Philadelphia. Later described by Abraham Ritter Jr., a friend of the family, as a representation of Krimmel’s reunion with George’s family at their home on Eleventh and Market streets in Philadelphia, the oil-on-canvas painting, at 14-by-12 inches, is full of
