Retailers along Route 487 in northern Columbia County, Pa., have partnered together to create “The Fishing Creek Antique Trail,” a 20 mile stretch of specialty retail shops beginning at Lavender and Old Lace just south of Interstate 80 in Bloomsburg and running as far north as The Red Rock Campground and Flea Market below Ricketts Glen State Park and other PA State Gamelands. Other participating businesses include The Shops at Forever Green, four local wineries, antique malls, specialty stores, small shops, galleries and auctioneers. The Fishing Creek Antique Trail is a unique alliance of area businesses working together to share resources, marketing and

information. The goal of this alliance is to foster growth and promote local culture and heritage in the region via the creation of a tourist attraction. The hope is that the trail will provide increased business and prosperity to the shops, restaurants, garages and wide range of businesses and communities in the Rt. 487 corridor. The concept originated as an effort by Benton retailers to create a shopping destination in Benton that included longtime retailers Black Bear Pottery, Benton Coin and Jewelry, The Bakery Antique Company, Ol’ Country Barn, Henny Penny’s Country Store and

Benton Antiques. With the addition of 487 Rustics last year and the arrival of Crafty Creations in May, the idea of creating a map and guide for the area took shape. Also in May, 487 Rustics moved south to The Shops at Forever Green to join Pickering Winery, Lightstreet Laser, and the Gift Shop at Forever Green. As an added bonus, PA Farm Furniture took over the former 487 Rustics location and provides high quality “refurbished” antiques and unique home décor items. Benton Mayor Jan Swan hopes to work with the retail businesses to expand the overall effort by including other Benton organizations and businesses in the hope of building on the regional effort to attract both people and business to the area. The hope is to attract visitors from New York, New Jersey, suburban Philadelphia and the Lehigh Valley as well as increase traffic from the Back Mountain, Wilkes Barre and Scranton regions. The trail combines quality shopping and rich natural beauty with outdoor activities such as fishing, golf, kayaking and hiking. Eighteen of the businesses are concentrated in the Benton area. Beginning at Retherford’s Farm, Produce and Antiques and on to PA Farm Furniture just south of

Fishing Creek and the Benton Dam, 65 vendors share space in the area’s largest antique co-op, Bakery Antiques Company and Benton Antiques. The local craft cooperative, Crafty Creations and Henny Penny’s Country Store and N4Cs Gift Shop is in the center of town. The Ol’ Country Barn anchors Benton’s northern reach of the antique trail. A soon-to-be-published guide will include other area antique shops such as Norm’s Antiques in Orangeville. Other shops will include The Benton Coin Shop, Benton Tobacco and Cigar, and Thunder Ridge Outfitters. The group hopes to combine the natural, outdoor appeal of the 487 corridor that culminates in the Pennsylvania Gamelands and Ricketts Glen State Park with the promise of quality shopping, winery tours, flea markets, outdoor sports, and

some of the best fishing in Pennsylvania. Thunder Ridge Outfitters and Archery Range of Benton serve as the outdoor centers of the Trail and offer travelers a unique outdoor outfitting experience. In addition to established wineries such as Pickering Winery, Stoney Acres-Elk Mountain, Purple Cow, Colonel Rickett’s Hard Cider and Three Dogs Vino, the recently announced Rohr McHenry Distilling Company has joined the other retailers with a promise of “coming soon.” For more information on the effort behind The Fishing Creek Antique Trail, call Dave Stemrich with Bakery Antiques at 610-248-6569 or Mayor Jan Swan at 570-925-5292. For additional information about some of the members or the area in general, call the Columbia Montour Visitors Bureau at 800-847-4810.

A young lady sprints toward the stage, dodging police barricades as the crowd screams in an Aug. 29, 1964, recording of The Beatles performing live at Forrest Hills Tennis Stadium in New York. The reel-to-reel recording, which was won by the consignor as a radio contest giveaway, will be among the featured lots in Cordier’s Antique and Fine Art auction to be held at their facility at 1500 Paxton Street in Harrisburg, Pa., on Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 13 and 14. The sale will also be highlighted by a single-owner gold coin collection and almost 200 lots of Asian and Ethnographic art. The Beatles recording (est. $2,000-$4,000) will be sold on day one along with coins, jewelry, silver, and a small grouping of 19th century Russian icons. Among the icons is a golden 19th-century Palekh icon of Saint George slaying a dragon (est. $1,000$1,500). Coins will include over 50 lots of gold coins, while jewelry offerings include a modernist 14 carat gemstone brooch (est. $1,000-$1,500). Day one will also feature six sterling flatware sets including a Gorham Etruscan set (est. $1,000-$1,200) and a set of Stieff Rose (est. $1,500$2,000), as well as Tiffany and S. Kirk and Son pieces. Almost 200 lots of Asian and Ethnographic arts will cross the block on day two, including over 100 lots of ivory. Highlights of those pieces, which mostly hail from the collections of two estates, include a large carved ivory wedding boat (est. $5,000$8,000) and an animated carved ivory tusk depicting elephants and big cats (est. $400-$600). Art will be headlined by a painting by the Iranian artist Nasser Ovissi (est. $40,000$50,000) as well as three lots of experimental pottery by Richard DeVore, a former master of ceramics at the

but since 2009 it has been a very different world. What I saw on that Saturday was a record number of bidders, but they were faceless and located anywhere and everywhere. Some may have been collectors just down the road who did not want to spend all afternoon at a sale. Others were located in distant parts of the country or globe. And for the consigner, this is the best part about this new way of bidding. Perhaps that lovely little European chest that they consigned to a

regional auction house can now be purchased by a European collector willing to pay a premium thanks to the internet. The sale, like all variety auctions, had peaks and valleys. There were bottom feeders and top players. Yet,

nearly every lot sold. Some to in-house buyers and some online. It was a different sale for me. It reflected changes in the buying world. Maybe I will go to another sale or maybe I too will join the world of buying at public sale through my computer screen.

wholesale world. Dealers purchased items at Saturday sales and took them to Adamstown the next day to sell to other dealers or to take into their shops or booths in co-ops. Then collectors jumped into the realm and things changed. The catalog sale, even for small auction houses, became a way of connecting to collectors. We saw record prices from regional houses directly to private collectors. Then the bust came along and things changed. Prices dropped, collectors moved away, and auctioneers watched the world change. Buyers were more spread out and there were fewer of them. The internet buyers had already been making in-roads,

By Peter Seibert I went to my first auction in ages a few weeks back. My wife and I had been avid sale goers for years and count many friends in the auction world. I remember my oldest daughter playing in the back of an auction while I bid. I recall purchasing many items for museums at auction including items through Christie’s from the George Scott sale. Long summer days and cold Thursday nights waiting for treasures eating bowls of bean soup and

talking with the furniture boys in the back corner. What all of those sales had in common was the electricity of the moment where bidders dueled it out to see who could own a treasure. Part theater, part rampant capitalism, part gossip column. The sale the other week was very different. The bidders were mostly online and there were long pauses while no one in the room bid except for two tech savvy clerks raising bids on each other. Now before folks assume that I hated it, please know that I did not. Rather, I look upon the new auction world as a manifestation of the benefits of technology within the antiques trade. When I first went to sales, they were the purview of the

Rich Penn Auctions Wins Four NAA Awards

Hubbard Little Girl Holding Dress in superior condition, which rose to $3,540. If the day belonged to any particular group of collectors, it was the Christmas crowd, which seems to have the holiday spirit even when it isn’t a holiday. “Usually there’s a sizable turnout for Christmas items, but this time I was surprised to see how many bidders had flown in to attend the sale rather than bid over the phone,” said Jeanne Bertoia. “I think when collectors come in and see things in person, it makes a difference. They’ll tell me that they thought a particular item was nice after seeing it in the catalog, but when they saw it in person, it was even nicer. We hear that all the time, and not just with the holiday collectors. I think it’s one reason why we consistently have a large live-audience attendance.”

“Goya: Mad Reason”

ALL DAY

PUBLIC AUCTION

Blanton Museum Of Art Organizes Exhibit Of Prints And Paintings By Francisco De Goya the skilled brushwork of Romero’s costume and muted tones of the painting’s background. “La Tauromaquia (The Art of Bullfighting)” (1815–16) is a series of etchings chronicling Goya’s idea of the evolution of bullfighting in Spain, including the practice’s history as well as the rituals and styles of famous bullfighters of the 18th and 19th centuries. “Los desastres de la guerra (The Disasters of War)” (1810 and ca. 1815) is one of Goya’s most well-known series, “Los desastres de la guerra” (first published posthumously in 1863) is often viewed as a visual protest against the violence of the 1808 Dos de Mayo Uprising, the subsequent Peninsular War of

1808–14, and the Bourbon Restoration of 1814. “Los disparates” (Follies) (1815–24) will also be shown. “Los disparates,” also known as “Los proverbios” (The Proverbs), was Goya’s last major intaglio print series, and was not published until after the artist’s death. The works depict dark and dream-like scenes, and they have been variously related to political issues, the Spanish carnival, and traditional proverbs - though they are far more complex puzzles than any one solution may answer. For additional information, including a schedule of lectures and programs, call 512-471-7324 or visit www.blantonmuseum.org.

insightful criticisms of ignorance and oppression, and his unflinching look at the inhumanity of war. “Goya: Mad Reason” highlights the artist’s treatment of war, bullfighting as a national pastime, and the instability of reason itself. His work makes visible the great transformations and unrest of Europe during his lifetime. Goya’s images manifest his hope for social progress as well as his disappointments. Against the traditions and vested interests of the populace, Church, and nobility, and influenced by French and English ideas, Spain’s liberal elites sought and achieved limited economic and educational reforms throughout the 1700s. Fears of the French Revolution spreading instability, and Napoleon Bonaparte’s subsequent 1808 invasion of Spain, halted much of that progress. After the war, the reign of Ferdinand VII led to regression and repression. In 1824, Goya left Spain for a selfimposed exile in Bordeaux, France. Goya’s art belongs to this history, yet it remains relevant for today’s viewers due, in part, to the themes explored in his works as well as his unique visual expression. The works exhibited in “Goya: Mad Reason” also reveal a shifting tension between objectivity, or reason, and irrational emotion. The partitioning of knowledge that flourished in Goya’s lifetime, as modern scientific thought emerged, underlies this development and persists as a basis of our own worldviews today. “Goya: Mad Reason” explores these issues across the artist’s prints and paintings, examining their historical and social power as well as the artist’s mastery across the media of painting and printmaking. Highlights of the exhibition include, “Portrait of the Matador Pedro Romero” (ca. 1795–98). Goya painted Pedro Romero, one of the greatest toreadors of all time, shortly before he retired from the bullring. Goya’s study of the works of Diego Velázquez is evident in

The Blanton Museum of Art at the University of Texas at Austin is presenting “Goya: Mad Reason,” an exhibition of nearly 150 prints and paintings by renowned Spanish court painter Francisco de Goya. The series of prints comprising the exhibition - borrowed from Yale University Art Gallery’s distinguished Arthur Ross collection - illustrate the artist’s mastery of forms and concepts as he grappled with the changing political and intellectual landscape of his native Spain in the early 19th century. Yale chose the Blanton as a partner for its Ross collection sharing initiative, and the Blanton in turn selected Yale’s superb and affecting Goya prints as a foundation for this exhibition. Select paintings on loan from the Kimbell Art Museum, the Meadows Museum, and the Museum of Fine Arts Houston further punctuate “Goya: Mad Reason” thematically and visually, offering new and insightful ways of understanding the artist’s prints. “We are honored to partner with Yale University Art Gallery to bring selections from the renowned Arthur Ross collection to Austin,” said Blanton Director Simone Wicha. “This project has also afforded us the opportunity to borrow paintings from other key institutions across Texas, offering further insight into the remarkable works of Francisco de Goya, an artist whose oeuvre touches on the very fabric of human nature, and whose profound creativity remains an inspiration centuries after his death.” Among Spain’s most celebrated artists, Francisco de Goya (1746–1828) is sometimes considered to be among the first truly modern artists. Edouard Manet, Pablo Picasso, Salvador Dalí and many other artists from the 19th and 20th centuries looked to Goya’s art for inspiration, and he continues to serve as a touchstone for contemporary artists like Yinka Shonibare and Enrique Chagoya. Goya is known for his penetrating characterization of the human condition, his
