Wedgwood Fairyland Lustre Temple On A Rock Sparkles At Skinner Sale

Toomey & Co. Auctioneers Sells Painting To Help Resale Shop/Charities on page 4

Vase And Cover Goes To The Museum Of Fine Arts, Boston, For $61,500 Skinner held an auction of European Furniture and Decorative Arts with ceramics and fine silver in Boston, Mass., on July 13. The sale saw active participation from bidders in the U.S., the United Kingdom, Europe, and Australia competing for items online, by telephone, in the room, and via online platforms. This Wedgwood Fairyland Lustre Temple on a Rock vase and cover sold for $61,500, going to the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. The vase and cover from England, ca. 1920, shape 2046, pattern Z4968, with printed mark, is 19.25 inches high. Wedgwood ceramics ruled the day, comprising seven of the top ten achieving lots. The highest-priced Wedgwood piece was a Fairyland Lustre Temple on a Rock vase and cover, which sold to the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, for $61,500. A John Northwood model of a Portland vase reached $18,450 to a private buyer in Australia. Many of the Wedgwood lots in the auction were from the Spak Collection of Wedgwood, with

the sale proceeds going to Florida International University. Items fresh to the market and with interesting provenance fared well, with many institutional deaccessions selling well beyond pre-auction estimate. A Japonisme gilt and silvered bronze figural gueridon sold for $23,370, attributed to Eugene Cornu and cast by G. Viot & Cie., the wonderfully modeled stand with shaped inset onyx supported by a phoenix bird, garnered heavy telephone competition from the U.S. and abroad. Another institutional deaccession, an elaborately decorated Japanned Cabinet on Stand realized $14,760. A seven-piece Tiffany & Co. Sterling silver tea and coffee service sold for $8,610. Other silver highlights included an extensive Gorham “Paris” Pattern Sterling silver flatware service that sold for $6,765; a group of Shreve & Co. Sterling silver tableware that sold for $5,228; and a Victorian Sterling silver flatware service that brought $4,305. To learn more, readers may visit www.skinnerinc.com.

The Snow Hill Cloister, founded in Franklin County in 1798 as an offshoot of the Ephrata Cloister, flourished until the outbreak of the Civil War. The last celibate brother, Obed Snowberger, died in 1895. This watercolor was purchased at the sale of his estate in 1896. Found 50 years ago by an area collector, it is now being offered at public sale for the first time in over a century. Edward Greey opened an art gallery in New York City in 1868 that was credited with creating a new appreciation for Japanese art in America. A Galactic Bounty Worthy Of The Hunt Very few record-breaking auction sales surprise me in the overall antiques and collectibles trade. As an enthusiast of pop culture-based collectibles, I am used to seeing some exorbitant prices being paid for items that once only sold for just a few dollars or more. Some of these items include comic books that were once discarded by countless mothers, toys that were sent to the second-hand store, and even the home video games that were thought to be useless and obsolete. I have become tone deaf to a lot of these sales, and part of me actually thinks I am living in a sort of alternate reality, a place where my youth and almost everything I cherish about it is readily available to be sold to the highest bidder. Nostalgia has that effect on me. It has become near impossible for me to separate some of the items I am most passionate about without also lamenting how much they used to sell for and how much some of these items sell for now. Luckily, I am wise enough to know that not everything from my childhood has become a valuable piece of history from the past. Like most collectors, I don’t just focus on those items. Does anyone really care to collect vintage Cabbage Patch Kids, Pogs, and Beanie Babies in 2019? That said, every once in a while a record-breaking auction sale does cause me to stop and pause. Mind you, it is not the kind of moment where I

begin to act surprised, but more or less a moment where I experience regret about letting a certain item pass me by that is now selling for a tidy sum. And this is where we are now. As I write this article, I feel a weird sense of emotion come over me. Everything from the fear of growing older to the feeling of being at peace like a naïve child. This isn’t supposed to happen when you are writing an article on the antiques and collectibles trade, I tell myself again and again. Yet those emotions are there, so we might as well get on with it and let bygones be bygones. On July 11, Hake’s Auctions sold a rare AFA-graded rocketfiring Boba Fett prototype “Star Wars” action figure for a record sum of $112,926. The figure is considered to be one of the holy grails among vintage “Star Wars” toy collectors. The item was graded in AFA 85 (near mint plus) condition and broke the previous auction record set for a similar figure that sold through Hake’s last year for about $86,000. The history of the rocket-firing Boba Fett prototype action figure is almost as exciting as the character himself. Boba Fett was a bounty hunter set in the “Star Wars” universe and is best known for capturing Han Solo and returning him to Jabba the Hutt for a princely sum. Ironically, the character was veiled in secrecy after the success of the very first “Star Wars” movie. Finally, when work on “The Empire Strikes Back” drew near, Boba Fett was featured in the forgettable animated “Star Wars” Christmas Special that aired on television in 1978. What made him truly famous was how he

was portrayed in “The Empire Strikes Back.” To increase awareness of the character, Kenner Toys launched a promotion where purchasers of “Star Wars” action figures could receive a free rocket-firing Boba Fett figure, which was advertised as a promotion on certain carded “Star Wars” action figures at retail. Unfortunately, as Kenner Toys went to work on the notso-secret rocket-firing Boba Fett, the company realized that the figure’s design could possibly cause a young child to choke on the projectile that was being included with the toy. This caused Kenner Toys to redesign the figure at the last minute, with the new, updated version of Boba Fett not featuring a rocket-firing mechanism. Kenner Toys also ordered all prototypes of any rocket-firing versions to be immediately destroyed. Lucky for today’s collectors, a lot of employees smuggled the coveted prototype figures out of the Kenner Toys offices. And while estimates as to how many prototype rocket-firing Boba Fett figures exist in the proverbial wild, most estimates place the number out there today at about 100 figures. That is actually quite a high number for different prototypes of one figure still in existence. That said, Boba Fett was always considered to be a very popular character in the “Star Wars” universe; even back in 1979, “Star Wars” toys were loved and coveted by millions. I had a chance to buy an ungraded rocket-firing Boba Fett prototype figure back in

The Morgan Library and Museum in New York City is holding an exhibition of satirical drawings and prints by renowned artist William Hogarth (1697–1764). Best known for his humorous political commentary, Hogarth’s work engaged a broad audience and agitated for legislative and social change. His intricate drawings and richly anecdotal scenes depict the ills and injustices of 18th-century urban life, exploring the connections between violence, crime, alcohol abuse, and cruelty to animals. He hoped his graphic work would amuse, shock, and ultimately edify his audience. “Hogarth: Cruelty and Humor” tells the story of Hogarth’s iconic images and the social realities of life in Georgian London that inspired him to advocate for reform through popular works of art. It is the first show at the Morgan devoted to this artist, whose style was so influential in British art that the word “Hogarthian” remains a recognizable way of describing works of satire. Featuring over 20 works, the show investigates Hogarth’s creative process and examines his embrace of humor, highlighting the Morgan’s exceptional cache of preparatory drawings for his two most acclaimed print series from 1751: “Beer

2011, but passed on the chance because at the time I was very sick and suffering with undiagnosed celiac disease and didn’t have an interest in spending the $11,000 the seller wanted at the time. That is why this is one of the hardest articles for me to write. The high end of the collecting market is always full of record-breaking auction sales. This is no different. What collectors need to understand about this sale is that just because you collect vintage “Star Wars” toys and action figures does not mean that your items will appreciate as much as this rocket-firing Boba Fett prototype action figure has over the years. You cannot allow the high end of any collector’s market to define the low to middle end of the market. Vintage “Star Wars” figures on average have remained flat for the past few years. It is only the items that are in heavy demand that are seeing great price increases at present. I urge collectors and speculators to use extreme caution if they are deciding to collect and pursue vintage “Star Wars” collectibles for investment. Prices of even once-coveted “Star Wars” 12-back figures that are AFA graded have been selling for modest sums now that the hype of the new “Star Wars” movies has finally begun to wear off. Make no mistake, this is one sale that truly belongs in a galaxy far, far away.

Pre-Columbian Gold Drives American Indian And Tribal Art Auction Haida Raven Rattle Sells For $18,750 A surge in demand for preColumbian art made of solid gold lifted Heritage Auctions’ Ethnographic Art: American Indian, Pre-Columbian and Tribal Art Auction to $1,004,553 on June 25 in Dallas, Texas. A large gold pendant, from the Central American Diquis culture, more than doubled its high preauction estimate when it drew $50,000 to claim top-lot honors in the sale. “The Diquis was a preColumbian culture in what is now Costa Rica that produced some extraordinary gold art,” said Heritage Auctions senior ethnographic art specialist Delia Sullivan. “The popularity of the Diquis lots in this auction are a reflection of the upward trajectory in the quality of pre-Columbian and Ethnographic lots Heritage offers.” The Diquis culture flourished from A.D. 700 to 1530.

This Diquis gold pendant brought $23,750. The tumbaga pendant portrays a dancing cacique, or shaman, holding a large arch of two doubleheaded serpents.

The rare pendant, from a private U.S. collection, can be traced back to Enrique Vargas Alfaro, who sold high quality pre-Columbian art to prestigious collections and appeared in such museums as the Smithsonian’s National Museum of the American Indian, the Denver Art Museum and the William C. Carlos Museum. Two other Diquis gold lots produced returns among the top 10 results in the auction, when a superb Diquis gold pendant and a Diquis gold figure each brought $23,750. The tumbaga pendant portrays a dancing cacique, or shaman, holding a large arch of two double-headed serpents, while the gold figure depicts a man in a semi-seated position holding a staff with bird head

finial in his left hand and a staff with celt in his right. An important Olmec mask, from the collection of Robert and Carolyn Nelson, realized $35,000. The life-sized mask comes from the earliest known major civilization in Mesoamerica in the region that covers the modern states of Veracruz and Tabasco bordering the far eastern coast of Mexico. Multiple collectors made bids for a Tlingit Chilkat blanket until it realized $35,000. Dated to about 1890, the blanket measures 68 inches wide, excluding its fringe, and is created from mountain goat hair, cedar bark and analine dyes. Chilkat is a traditional style of weaving by the Tlingit and other people in the Pacific Northwest. A Mezcala figure sold for $18,750; a Plateau beaded wool horse

Through the Decades, Shopping Through the Century,” which featured the Curran painting prior to consigning to Toomey & Co.’s Art and Design auction. Charles Courtney Curran was born in 1861 in Hartford, Ky., and raised in Sandusky, Ohio. After training in New York City and Paris, Curran and his family split time between New York and Ohio until he passed away in 1942. Combining elements of impressionism, naturalism, and tonalism, Curran became known for painting female subjects in various milieus. “Three Women on Hilltop” was executed in 1919, likely at the Cragsmoor Art Colony in New York’s Hudson River Valley, where the Curran family summered for 40 years. Somewhat underappreciated, Curran’s works are nonetheless part of the collections of various significant institutions, including the Art Institute of Chicago and the Terra Foundation for American Art in Chicago, the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in Philadelphia, and the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco. Toomey & Co. was honored to auction one of Curran’s paintings to support the Economy Shop’s important mission. The company’s next Art and Design Auction is scheduled for Sunday, Sept. 15. Toomey & Co. Auctioneers is located at 818 North Boulevard, Oak Park, Ill. For more information, visit www.toomeyco.com.

In the 1930s, Shirley Temple was America’s sweetheart. Ah, but there was only one Shirley. There were five Dionnes. Just over 85 years ago, on May 28, 1934, the Dionne sisters, the first and so far, only, set of identical quintuplets, were born in Canada. In this day of advanced fertility treatments, multiple births are nothing to get goggle-eyed over. In the 1930s, the odds were one in 57 million. The “five most adorable little girls in the world” made headlines. Cécile, Marie, Yvonne, Emilie, and Annette Dionne first saw light in a ramshackle farmhouse near Corbeil, Ontario. Their mother, Elzire, had already given birth to six children. She was just 25. Their father, Oliva, with whom the quints had a turbulent relationship, was. . .well, as he remarked in an early news report, “I’m the kind of fellow they should put in jail.” The initial survival of the Dionnes was credited to “the country doctor” who delivered them, Dr. Allan Dafoe. The quints weighed in at just 10 pounds, 1-1/4 ounces—total. Dafoe was so uncertain of their fate that he baptized them before the arrival of the parish priest. Oliva Dionne quickly explored his options. Within three days of their arrival, he’d agreed to exhibit his daughters at the Chicago World’s Fair for $250 a week (plus 23 percent of ticket receipts, if all lived). At that point, the government of Canada stepped in. A court order prohibited Papa

The red earthenware flowerpot reportedly made at Frank Lamson’s (1859-1936) Exeter Pottery Works in Exeter, N.H., was formerly owned by Norton and possibly acquired new from the pottery.

The red earthenware vase (left) is attributed to and during John Donovan’s employment at the Moses Paige Pottery in Peabody, Mass. The vase was once owned by Frederick Norton. The red earthenware vase (right) in a matching size and form is from the Lura Woodside Watkins Collection at the National Museum of American History at the Smithsonian Institute, stamped “PEABODY POTTERY / 1736 / MADE BY / J.J. Norton may have also visited Russell Stahl’s (1911-86) pottery in Powder Valley, Pa., seeing that Stahl’s pottery is represented in the collection he gifted to the MFA. Russell was the third generation of Stahls to produce red earthenware on the family site, ceasing production altogether sometime about 1953. In fact, more-than 1,000 pieces of Russell’s pottery were sold onsite by Maurer’s Auctions in the summer of 1987. Living family members purchased much of the estate and

While visiting a house in East Sandwich, Mass., on Cape Cod during Memorial Day weekend in 2015, I purchased some pottery from Henry Bornhofft III. The pottery was once owned by Frederick H. Norton (1896-1986), a physicist and ceramics professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in Cambridge, Mass. But, Norton was also a relative of the famed Norton family of potters in New England. He was also a potter himself. Bornhofft said that Norton was a friend of some members of his family, and each piece of pottery was marked on the base with a number, which corresponded with the same number in a book owned by Norton, identifying the object and how it was obtained. One of the objects during the visit really stood out to me. I was told John Donovan made an orange glazed vase at the Moses Paige Pottery (1847/481941) in Peabody, Mass., in the 1920s. I later learned that the form of the lead glazed red earthenware vase matched an object in the collection of the National Museum of American History at the Smithsonian Institute in Washington, D.C., which is prominently stamped, “PEABODY POTTERY / 1736 / MADE BY / J.J. DONOVOAN / 1930.” However, while Norton’s name may not be widely known today, in addition to leaving a legacy behind at MIT, he made contributions at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, as a contributor to the research of some well-known author’s publications. Frederick H. Norton Born in Manchester near Gloucester in Essex County, Mass., on Oct. 23, 1896, Frederick Harwood Norton was a relative of the Norton family of potters in Bennington, Vt., and Worcester, Mass. His parents were Charles and Frances Norton, and he was the eldest of six children. His father was a graduate of MIT, successful engineer, fellow to the

The collection of 19th-century billheads and paperwork from Dublin, N.H., West Sterling, Mass., Worcester, Mass., and Bennington, Vt., was originally owned by Norton, many of which were cited by Lura Woodside Watkins in her 1950 book, “Early New England Potters and Their Wares.” There are many aspects of Norton’s life that intrigue me, especially learning the progression of his career, and how he had the opportunity to visit traditional working potteries in the 1920s and ’30s. He must have been thrilled to see how some of these businesses actually operated during the period. I would have loved to have spoken with Professor Norton and met the workingclass potters who he interacted with in his lifetime.

Museum of American History. I suspect that Norton must have acquired a group of wares from the Peabody Pottery in the 1920s, consisting of the vase I purchased on Cape Cod, the four objects he gifted to the MFA and possibly the two pieces in the Watkins collection at the Smithsonian. Although soon after Watkins’ book was released, Norton wrote a pottery book of his own that was published in 1956, titled “Ceramics for the Artist Potter,” some of which was perhaps based on information Norton learned from being a potter himself. In fact, it was reported that Norton had developed a superior terra-cotta clay by the mid20th century. This superior clay is probably the same used on two large vases that I acquired from Bornhofft in 2015, both decorated with African animals. The MFA also owns a great collection of skillfully created earthenware made by Norton that is decorated in various vibrant colors, colors that any American art potter would have boasted about. In some ways similar to the research that Professor Norton published at NASA Langley, he also wrote some academic and scholarship material about ceramics that was published through MIT. Much of this applied to being a studio potter and creating artistic and decorative pottery, which had become fashionable, especially by some potters in Europe and Japan. He also wrote about the Martin Crafts Pottery in Nashua, N.H., the Norton Pottery in Worcester, and the Exeter Pottery Works, among other subjects. I learned about the whereabouts of a group of 19th-century earthenware billheads from businesses in West Sterling, Mass., and Dublin, N.H., also known as Chesham Village. These bills of receipt were all cited by Watkins in “Early New England Potters and Their Wares” and were just rediscovered in a collection of paperwork and books from Norton’s estate. A lot of Norton’s original research,

manuscripts, photography, as well as writing and paperwork from the Norton potteries in Worcester and Bennington were also identified. But aside from that, Norton contributed as an archeologist, as well. He recovered a great collection of artifacts that should be noted today from the original Dogtown settlement in Gloucester. The community was settled about 1693 and grew to more than 100 families and 60 to 80 homes by 1750 through the American Revolution. In the 20th century, Norton uncovered all sorts of artifacts around some of the settlement’s 18th-century foundations related to everyday life, including various types of red earthenware, some decorated with slip. Some of the pottery may have been made locally at a business owned by Daniel Bayley (1729-92) in the 1750s, but some of it may have been imported from elsewhere in Essex County or even the Colonial industry in Charlestown, Mass. The Sandy Bay Historical Society in Rockport, Mass., owns the Dogtown artifacts today. Professor Norton’s Legacy Frederick Norton’s name alone is easily recognizable today due to the manufacturing and creative success of the late 18th- and 19th-century potteries bearing his surname in Worcester and Bennington. But Norton should really be recognized for the remarkable pottery that he manufactured at MIT in the early 1900s. I am not sure how much of this pottery exists outside of the MFA, but the accomplished beautiful colored glazes are wonderful to see. But equally as much, Norton was a brilliant physicist who applied and tested his gifted intelligence to the field of ceramics, especially studio pottery, and how physics yielded a better understanding of what was actually taking place within the makeup of clay, the forming of clay, and how this all reacted inside of the kiln.

A Piece Of West Virginia History To Cross The Auction Block At Woody’s In Douglass, Kansas An Americana 35-star flag folk art table dating to the 1860s, from the James R. and Barbara A. Miller collection, will be sold with no reserve and no sales tax on Saturday, Sept. 7, by Woody Auction. It is nearly identical to an unsigned 13-star flag table that previously sold at Sotheby’s. The auction center is located at 130 E. Third St., in Douglass, Kan., and the sale will begin at 9:30 a.m (Central Time Zone). The wooden table, ca. 1860s, measures 31 inches high, 35 inches wide, and 25 inches deep. It features one three-compartment drawer the full width of the table. On the face of the drawer, two carved dueling pistols and a pyramid of ammunition are

attached. Inside the drawer is the signature “Made & Designed by F. Wedin, Roxbury,” presumably a piano maker from Massachusetts during that time period. The top of the table highlights a carved, inlaid, and painted flag with 35 stars, symbolizing West Virginia’s statehood on June 20, 1863. The side supports resemble anchors, the legs are formed like cannons, and the cross braces are shaped like rifles. The feet represent cannonballs. “The workmanship of this piece is stunning,” stated Jason Woody. “It really is a fine historical piece that I sincerely hope finds its way back to West Virginia.”

There is no buyer’s premium for bidders who attend in person and pay by cash or check. Online bidders will be charged a 15-percent buyer’s premium when paying by cash or check, and a 5-percent fee will be applied to all credit card charges. Single Owner Collection To Bring Excitement To Alderfer Auction Two-Days Of Sales Scheduled For Aug. 21 And 22 The Richard and Elisabeth Poole collection is slated to sell at Alderfer’s on Wednesday and Thursday, Aug. 21 and 22. From Rehoboth Beach, Del., the offerings will be over 100 pieces of fine art and designer jewelry. The artwork is by wellknown East Coast artists such as Christopher H. Shearer, Charles Gruppe, Carl Weber, Bennett Bradbury, Edmund Darch Lewis and George McConnell. Sapphire, diamond, gemstones and pearls complete the 14-carat gold pins, earrings, bracelets and rings in this grouping. A live and online collector’s auction will be held on day two. The auction is filled with fine offerings of vehicles, art, antiques, furnishings, decorative accessories and jewelry selected by Alderfer’s team of professionals. Vibrant colors of fine Japanese porcelain, featuring portions of the DrickMessing collection, compose

70 lots. Showcased are rare and extraordinary examples of Imari, Kutani, Sumida Gawa, Fukugawa and Hirado porcelain. The jewelry and timepieces make statements with an 18carat Patek Philippe Calatrava, a ladies 18-carat Tiffany and Co. and 14-carat repeater pocket watch. Period furniture, Stickley mission oak, tiger maple step-back and corner cupboards keep the collector appeal as modern furniture, attributed to Paul McCobb, waits for a discerning buyer.

Alderfer Auction’s roots of Bucks County Impressionism are reflected in the fine art of Ranulph Bye, Christopher Willett, Walter E. Baum, Mildred Gehman, Christopher H. Shearer and Bennett Bradbury. The regional appeal continues with the 15-piece collection of sculpture from Philadelphia artist Joseph Greenberg. His two most notable works are the granite bear and cub in the Philadelphia Zoo, and his magnum opus is the “Symbol of Progress,” a 60-foot sculpture in the heart of Bethlehem, Pa.

Fine Art on day two will also include work from worldrenowned artists Auguste Rodin, Georges Omerth, and Luigii Settani. The two days will begin with the online-only single owner Poole collection on

Aug. 21 at 8 a.m. The live Discovery Art Auction is Aug. 22 at 9 a.m., which is followed by the live and online Collector’s Auction beginning at 10 a.m. Catalogs can be found by visiting www.alderferauction.com. Alderfer Auction services
