By Shawn Surmick There are two words I wish I could remove from the lexicon of anyone involved in the buying and selling of antiques and collectibles: undervalued and overvalued. I have long argued that these words are irrelevant to anyone involved in markets where speculation reigns supreme. Assigning value to an antique or collectible is not on par with assigning value to a stock, bond, or even real estate. Antiques and collectibles are a special asset class whose value is not attributed to cash flows and dividend payments. Yet I often have in-depth conversations with collectors, dealers, and speculators who try to explain why a particular collectible is undervalued or potentially overvalued at present time. For perspective, let’s review a particular discussion I recently had with two high-profile vintage comic book collectors. Both collectors are in their 50s and have been avidly collecting comic books for 30-plus years. In that time, and due to the massive rise in prices for certain vintage comic books, both individuals will have done very well should they decide to sell their entire collections today. Most of the books in these collections are high grade and third-party graded. Any auction company that deals in vintage comic books would be chomping at the bit to get a chance to auction off these books; however, getting these individuals to consign their collections is another matter entirely. We had a friendly debate about the current state of the vintage comic book market. Assuming you have not been living under a rock as of late, it should come as no surprise that certain key issue vintage superhero themed comic books from the late 1930s all the way up to present day have been soaring in value. Outside of the earlier “golden age” mega keys like Action Comics #1 (first appearance of Superman) and Detective Comics #27 (first appearance of Batman), Marvel Comics have been performing better in the overall market than that of vintage DC Comic key issues. This has caused both of these comic book collectors to declare that DC Comics and mainly DC Comic superhero key issues are undervalued at present time. Ironically, neither comic collector in this discussion would dare admit that if that is the case, key vintage Marvel comic books would be overvalued in today’s marketplace? Confusing matters more, I personally don’t think that key vintage Marvel comics are overvalued, just like I do not believe that key vintage DC Comics are undervalued. The reason for this is twofold, so let me explain further. The current vintage comic book marketplace favors Marvel superhero key issues because Marvel is owned by Disney. Disney was the first to realize the potential value of the Marvel Comics franchise when they purchased the company in 2009. Ever since that acquisition, Disney has done a top-notch job of creating an expansive cinematic universe starring all of their popular (and in some cases unpopular) back catalog of Marvel superheroes. Along with leveraging theatrical releases every few months, Disney has also learned to leverage their own Disney Plus streaming service with original mini-series based on these same characters. Add in connective stories tying these characters to other aspects of the Marvel cinematic experience, and Disney created a fan-obsessed, never-ending universe of gripping stories that could potentially go on forever. They truly succeeded at bringing these comic characters to life, and comic collectors along with casual enthusiasts took notice. Add in a plethora of licensing opportunities and other product tie-ins, and it is easy to see that Disney created a cash cow as a result. On the other sideof the spectrum, DC Comics has also done a good job at bringing some of their popular characters to the big screen and to limited television series. Obviously Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, and Aquaman are all excellent examples. Unfortunately, due to a series of bad decisions and setbacks, DC was unable to position itself like Disney in this regard (spoiler alert: DC Comics just canned the Batwoman movie after spending over $90 million on its development). As a result, when comparing the Marvel cinematic universe to that of the DC Comics cinematic universe, there is no comparison. Marvel has blown DC away in this regard for years. Before I go any further, I should point out that I actually like DC’s Batman more than any other superhero ever created. That said, most DC Comic characters are not as zany or personality driven as some of the more popular Marvel comic characters. On the Marvel side of the equation, Iron Man is a favorite of mine. Differences aside, comparing Batman to Iron Man can be done, but most comic enthusiasts would tell you that Batman is much more dark and static than Iron Man, which is kind of ironic since Batman (and his sidekick, Robin) have always been considered the “dynamic duo.” I have never seen anyone go to a modern era Batman movie and expect to leave feeling warm and fuzzy. Batman is meant to be dark, violent, and

America’s Music Man: Meredith Willson Smack Dab In The Middle: Design Trends Of The Mid-20th Century

This is a souvenir showbook for the Broadway production of “The Music Man,” 1957, est.

By Donald-Brian Johnson

What if you wrote a musical about your hometown, and they made a movie of it? Would anybody come? Well, Meredith Willson wrote one, and the crowds came in droves. In 1962, “The Music Man,” starring Robert Preston and Shirley Jones, premiered in Willson’s hometown, Mason City, Iowa (“River City,” as re-christened in the movie). There were 90,000 people that attended. And Willson himself led a 600-strong marching band down the city streets as they tootled their way through “76 Trombones.” Set in 1912, “The Music Man” is all about huckster Harold Hill, who travels from town to town selling musical instruments and organizing “boys’ bands,” even though he’s bereft of musical training. Hill stays one step ahead of the law, until true love with a local librarian trips him up, over Fourth of July weekend in River City. If “The Music Man” seems true-to-life, that’s because, for the most part, it is. Meredith Willson was born in River City (er... Mason City) in 1902. As a visit there reveals, he seems to have remembered absolutely everything about his hometown. There’s the public library (the setting for “Marian the Librarian”), the leafy footbridge where Harold Hill romanced Marian Paroo and the restored Willson home, with its uncanny resemblance to the show’s Paroo residence.Today, in Mason City, Iowa, there is “Music Man Square,” a 10-million dollar “learning center for music students of all ages.” Its Grammy,playcontribution).withbymemorabiliaarrayItsbankfromWarneratesauthentically“streetscape”re-cre-thesetoftheBrothersfilm,barbershoptotobilliardparlor.museumhasavastofMeredith(donatedhiswidow,alongasizablefinancialOndis-arehispiano,aandeven his Presidential Medal of Freedom, plus, of course, lots of “Music Man” artifacts, including, suspended from the ceiling, 76 actual trombones.Chatfield, Minn., my hometown, has a long history of community theater presentations. In 1982, I was spending the summer there, playing Harold Hill in “The Music Man.” Shows were presented in cavernous Potter Auditorium. With its basketball-court-sized stage and audience seating for 900 (roughly half of Chatfield’s population), practically anything imaginable can be brought to giant-size life in Potter. For “The Music Man,” that meant a cast of 75, a live horse hauling the “Wells Fargo Wagon,” and the 40member Chatfield Brass Band marching onstage for a grand finale rendition of “76 Trombones.”ThenChatfield’s own “music man” had an idea. Attorney Jim Perkins, founder of the Brass Band, suggested “What if Meredith Willson himself came to town?” A call was made, and breaths were held. What would the responseLuckily,be?years in California hadn’t diminished Willson’s native Iowa thriftiness. He’d been contemplating a visit to the Mayo Clinic in nearby Rochester. If Chatfield paid for his plane fare and hotel room, attendance at “The Music Man” could be arranged, handily combined with doctor visits. Since Meredith’s health was extremely precarious, his wife, Rosemary, warned us “not to expect too much.” He would wave to the crowd when introduced, but as for anything else, well. On Aug. 12, 1982, the curtain rose on “The Music Man,” Chatfield-style. Beforehand, a frail but smiling Meredith Willson was honored with a standing ovation from the packed house. The show moved along energetically and tunefully. Then came the finale. The Chatfield Brass Band appeared, accompanying the lively vocals of “76 Trombones.” The entire cast marched up the auditorium aisles. I led the gang, oversized drum major’s baton in hand. When we reached the seats occupied by the Willsons, Rosemary beckoned me over. “You know,” she said, “I think Meredith would like to join you.” I held out my baton. The years dropped away, as Meredith Willson grabbed it, and happily led the performers back onstage. By now, the

The major fall exhibition at Frick Madison (the temporary home of The Frick Collection during renovation of its historic buildings) presents the largest and most significant promised gift of drawings and pastels in the institution’s history. Assembled by Elizabeth “Betty” and Jean-Marie Eveillard, avid collectors of drawings and pastels, the exhibition includes European works ranging in date from the end of the 15th century to the 20th century and representing artists working in France, Britain, Italy, Spain, and the Netherlands. The 26 works include some of the couple’s finest acquisitions: 18 drawings, five pastels, two prints, and one oil sketch. Along with preparatory figurative sketches and independent studies and portraits are two vivid landscape scenes. Artists represented come from the same schools that attracted Henry Clay Frick as a collector, many of whom are represented in the permanent collection: François Boucher, Edgar Degas, Jean-Honoré Fragonard, Francisco José de Goya y Lucientes, Thomas Lawrence, and Jean-François Millet. The gift also introduces to the museum’s holdings works by artists not previously represented, including

Collector gritty thanks to how he was reimagined after the campy 1960s television show that most of us know and love. That said, has any parent actually thought that any of the Iron Man or Avengers movies starring Iron Man were too dark and intense for pre-teen children to see? In conclusion, collectors need to understand that current market dynamics and factors sometimes beyond their control make and break markets in the antiques and collectibles trade. The fact that Disney has expertly crafted the Marvel Universe into what it is today does not mean key vintage Marvel comic books are overvalued.

Continued from page 3 On the flip side, because DC Comics are not currently viewed as being on par with Marvel Comics in this manner does not mean that DC Comics are undervalued at present time. As I have stated multiple times, the only constant in the antiques and collectibles trade is change. And make no mistake, there will come a time when superhero movies are no longer seen as the guaranteed money maker that they are today, and when that happens I would not want to be the one holding some of these supposedly “overvalued” comic books. I assure you that the market is pricing them correctly at present time, and the market will always price them correctly going forward. As a result, there is no such thing as a collectible or an antique being overvalued or undervalued in the current investment hype-driven marketplace. It’s just not feasible without redefining these terms. That said, speculators are going to speculate, and haters are going to hate. Until we meet again.

Felchner Hell hath no fury in Hollywood like a biker gang scorned. The venerable outlaw motorcycle gang moviereplete with wild, marauding bikers, ear-splitting road machines, rough-looking “mamas” and scared, milkdrinking “straights” - has been traversing the highways of Tinseltown since the early 1950s.Here are 10 great outlaw biker films and the colorful movie memorabilia they spawned. Fasten your seat belts for a bumpy, nostalgic ride down one of Hollywood’s more wild and interesting cinematic sub-genres.

2. “The Wild Angels” (1966). Peter Fonda of legendary “Easy Rider” (1969) fame has the lead role. The Heavenly Blues are a Hells Angels chapter operating out of Venice, Calif. and Fonda is their lead man. Also along for the wild ride are Nancy Sinatra, Bruce Dern, Diane Ladd, Buck Taylor, Michael J. Pollard, and a sprinkling of actual members of the reallife Hells Angels and Coffin Cheaters motorcycle clubs. Produced and directed by Roger Corman and released by budget-conscious American International Pictures (AIP), “The Wild Angels” remains a cult classic among biker film aficionados. The eight-card lobby set, originally displayed in movie theater lobbies to promote the picture, represents biker film art at its best. One complete set of 11-by-14-inch color cards in very fine condition sold at auction for $179.25.3.“C.C. and Company” (1970). Directed by Seymour Robbie and released by AVCO Embassy Pictures, “C.C. and Company” stars fabled New York Jets quarterback and Super Bowl III hero “Broadway Joe” Namath as C.C. Ryder, an ex-grease monkey who tells his boss to shove it and joins the Heads motorcycle gang. The latter is led by big, brawny William Smith (a familiar heavy in many biker films) as the evil Moon. The film’s climax takes place at a motocross where Namath and Smith lock horns, with pretty Ann-Margret as fashion writer Ann McCalley figuring prominently in their macho rivalry. “C.C. and Company” memorabilia is still quite affordable. The picture’s standard one sheet poster (27-by-41 inches) is the big draw, promising a “Joe Namath - loving, brawling and bustin’ it up!” One example in folded fine/very fine condition brought a top bid of $40 at auction.

1. “The Wild One” (1953). Based on the Frank Rooney short story “The Cyclists’ Raid” (Harper’s Magazine, January 1951), producer Stanley Kramer’s “The Wild One” is considered by many to be the original outlaw motorcycle gang movie. The film stars Hollywood’s quintessential rebel Marlon Brando as Johnny Strabler, leader of the hell-raising Black Rebel Motorcycle Club. Lee Marvin co-stars as Chino, leader of the rival Beetles biker gang. The two hooligan entities converge in Wrightsville, Calif., where local police chief Harry Bleeker (Robert Keith) struggles to maintain law and order. Directed by Laszlo Benedek, “The Wild One” is a big favorite with collectors. The film’s standard one sheet poster (27-by-41 inches) is sure to get a collector’s engine racing, with one restored example in very good condition on linen selling at auction for $1,314.50. A half sheet poster (22-by-28 inches) in rolled very fine+ condition brought a top bid of $418.25.

4. “The Born Losers” (1967). An important entry in biker film lore as this picture introduced Tom Laughlin as Billy Jack, an ex-Green Beret Vietnam vet who takes on the Born Losers motorcycle gang in a small California town. Jeremy Slate plays the gang’s leader Danny Carmody, with Elizabeth James and William Wellman Jr. (son of the great movie director) also on hand. Laughlin directed the film under the pseudonym “T.C. Frank” and later shot to stardom playing the title role in the 1971 sleeper hit “Billy Jack.” The standard one sheet poster is a real blast, featuring the blurb: “Kitten On Wheels With Her Bike…Her Boots and Bikini! Out for kicks…in for trouble! She’s going to join the…Born Losers.” One example in folded very fine- condition sold at auction for $107.55.5.“The Glory Stompers” (1967). Dennis Hopper - Peter Fonda’s co-star in 1969’s “Easy Rider” - stars as Chino, the soulless leader of the Black Souls motorcycle gang in this low-budget entry from American International Pictures. Chino and his grubby clan leave rival Glory Stompers biker gang leader Darryl (Jody McCrea) for dead, kidnap his girlfriend Chris (Chris Noel) and hightail it to the Mexican border. In hot pursuit is the resurrected Darryl and ex-Glory Stompers member Smiley (Jock Mahoney). A favorite exploitation film of actor-director Quentin Tarantino, “The Glory Stompers” produced some wild movie promo material. The film’s insert poster (14-by36-inches) - promising “the Deadliest Cycle War ever to be waged!” - represents an outstanding piece of biker movie history. One example in rolled very fine condition brought a top bid of $30 at auction. 6. “Werewolves on Wheels” (1971). The unbeatable combination of horror and hell-raising converge in this offbeat biker film from Fanfare Corporation. Steve Oliver as Adam and D.J. Anderson as Helen head the cast, with Billy Gray (Bud Anderson on TV’s “Father Knows Best”) and singer Barry McGuire (“The Eve Biker Gang Movies And Memorabilia sheet “The Wild One” card “The Wild Angels” (1966) one sheet poster for “C.C. and Company” (1970)

7. “The Hard Ride” (1971). Vietnam vets and biker gangs often commingled in Hollywood biker films of the 1960s and ‘70s. In this flick from American International Pictures, Robert Fuller plays newly-discharged Vietnam veteran Phil, who returns home from the war to fulfill a promise to a dying friend. He takes charge of his buddy’s beloved motorcycle “Baby,” meets up with said buddy’s girlfriend Sheryl (Sherry McBain) and runs afoul of a biker gang in the desert. The eight-card movie theater lobby set - dominated by the beautiful, saucy, red-headed Sherry McBain clad in all blackis a winner with collectors. One set in very fine+ condition sold at auction for $36.

8. “The Rebel Rousers” (1970). Jack Nicholson, Bruce Dern and Harry Dean Stanton star in this low-budget biker film which these gentlemen have been collectively trying to forget ever since they filmed it in 1967. The boys are members of the Rebel Rousers, a biker gang on the loose in a small town in coastal California. Also on hand are Cameron Mitchell and Diane Ladd - the obligatory “straights” - who run afoul of the gang. “The Rebel Rousers,” released in 1970 in order to capitalize on Jack Nicholson’s Oscar-nominated performance as George Hanson in “Easy Rider” (1969) features some wild movie promotional material. The standard one sheet poster (27-by-41-inches) incorporates elements of the old Confederate battle flag. One example in folded very fine condition brought $71.70 at auction.

AVAILABLEBIDDINGAT: Salesman Sample MechanicalBank Hollywood of Destruction”) also along for the ride into Hades. The biker gang of note in this flick is The Devil’s Advocates, who trash a monastery inhabited by devilworshipping monks, only to be hit with a curse later when one of their “mamas” is transformed into a werewolf. “Werewolves on Wheels” movie material commands excellent prices today. The film’s standard one sheet poster (27-by-41 inches) executed by Joe Smith is hog wild, featuring outstanding, overthe-top graphics along with the blurb: “The Gang Thought It Was Tough…’til it found a new type of hell…The Bride of Satan!” One example in folded very fine condition roared to a top bid of $334.60.

9. “Hells Angels on Wheels” (1967). Released by U.S. Films Inc. and directed by Richard Rush, “Hells Angels on Wheels” stars Adam Rourke, Jack Nicholson and Sabrina Scharf. Nicholson plays the role of Poet, a bored gas station attendant who joins the Angels for kicks. Also appearing in the film is Ralph “Sonny” Barger, the real-life president at the time of the Oakland chapter of Hells Angels. The standard one sheet poster (27-by-41 inches)promising “The Shattering True Story of the Hells Angels of Northern California!” - is replete with biker themes and symbols. One example in restored fine/very fine condition on linen sold at auction for $155.35.

10. “The Mini-Skirt Mob” (1968). Yet another American International Pictures biker film but with a unique twist: the gang is all female. Diane McBain stars as Shayne, the leggy leader of a biker gang known as the Mini-Skirt Mob (actually it should be the Micro Mini-Skirt Mob given the length of their Continued from page 8 skirts). Instead of Harleys and Triumphs, the girls unleash hell on lightweight Hondas while kicking tail in wild go-go boots. “Nothing is more vicious than a scorned, guilt-ridden blonde,” the movie trailer warns. The standard one sheet poster, which features the blurb “They Play Around with Murder Like They Play Around with Men! They’re hog straddling female animals on the prowl!” (whew!), pictures Diane McBain sprawled out on a motorcycle. One example in folded very fine condition zoomed to a top bid of $191.20 at auction.Other notable entries in the genre include “Motorcycle Gang” (1957), “Chrome and Hot Leather” (1971), “Nam’s Angels” (1970), “The Black Six” (1973), “Hells Angels ‘69” (1969), “Naked Angels” (1969), “The Cycle Savages” (1969), “Hell’s Belles” (1969), “The Hellcats” (1968), “The Wild Rebels” (1967) and “Run, Angel, Run!” (1969).
