Items From The Renowned Eric C. Caren Archive Come To Cowan’s Material Among The Most Significant Private Collection Of Historic Documents To Be Sold Sept. 8 Select items from the Eric C. Caren Archive, the single-most significant private collection of historic documents in the United States, will be offered at Cowan’s Auctions on Friday, Sept. 8. The live salesroom event will be held in Cowan’s Cincinnati, Ohio, facility. Featuring newspapers, periodicals, broadsides, photographs, ephemera and other items dating from the 16th century to the present, the archive comprises an unsurpassed physical record of the history of the United States and beyond. “After 25 years in the business of selling historical Americana, I’ve seen plenty of accumulations and impressive collections, but nothing prepared me for the Caren Archive,” said Wes Cowan, principal auctioneer and executive chairman of Cowan’s. “The A large-format photograph of Abraham Lincoln and his son, Tad, the last formal photo of the president, was taken at Alexander Gardner’s studio in Washington, D.C., on Feb. 5, 1865 (est. $15,000 to $25,000).
A Wild West Show poster, titled “The ‘Two Bills’” and featuring Buffalo Bill and Pawnee Bill, is estimated at $10,000 to $15,000. amount of paper Americana Eric has gathered in one place is simply staggering.” The Caren Archive has already yielded four auctions, including a million-dollar event at Christie’s earlier this year, yet interest in items from the archive remains insatiable. “We have such a wide range of items in the sale, there really is something for every collector,” said Katie Horstman, Cowan’s director of Continued on page 2
This is a one-of-a-kind original photograph maquette by Mathew Brady, “Union Cavalry Leaders & Raiders,” consisting of 12 CDVs of officers, including George Armstrong Custer, circa 1864 (est. $5,000 to $7,000).
An imperial-size cabinet photograph of the “Scouts of the Plains,” Western legends Wild Bill Hickok, Texas Jack Omohundro and Buffalo Bill Cody, taken in New York City, circa 1873, with the original inscribed mat, is expected to sell for $8,000 to $12,000. The trio had a short-lived partnership in a stage production.
The Antique Radio Club of Illinois held Radiofest, a large antique and vintage radio collecting show and auction, in LaGrange Park, Ill., on Aug. 4, 5, and 6. Radiofest has the reputation for being among the largest electronics shows in the Midwest. The show started off with a large electronics auction on Friday night. There were 229 lots consigned this year. The total sales were $35,570, an increase of 8 percent over 2016 and 44 percent over 2015. A breakdown of the lots sold included 34 selling between $250 and $499 and 14 lots for $500 or higher. Among the auction highlights was a Hallicrafters SX88 selling for $2,000; an Emerson Patriot Catalin radio, $1,400; an Emerson 411 Mickey Mouse
Repwood radio, $800; and an RCA 9X3 Catalin radio, $700.

New Harry Potter Book Reveals Values And Fandom Behind The Wizard Featuring more than 300 outstanding objects gathered from private and public collections, “Harry Potter - The Unofficial Guide to The Collectibles of Our Favorite Wizard” provides the first comprehensive survey of the rich art, books, and memorabilia created during the last 20 years of Pottermania. First-edition copies of J.K. Rowling’s epic now command nearly $50,000, and special items created for collectors are rising in value. The esoteric knowledge, visual symbols, and moral teachings revealed in Rowling’s writings have inspired an entire generation of readers young and old and have formed an important facet of popular culture. In this well-illustrated and lavishly designed book, author Eric Bradley introduces readers to the broad world of these collectibles and explores the fandom surrounding the mystique behind the world’s boy-wizard. From the Holy Grail chair Rowling used to write her epic series, which sold for a spellbinding $394,000, to a $40,000 Potterthemed wedding and those who tattoo their bodies with symbolism from the books, this guide appeals to dedicated Harry Potter fans and the curious alike. “Twenty years on, the world of

than just a download contained on a digital file. As a result of this trend, independent record stores that cater to vinyl enthusiasts are finally starting to get the recognition they deserve. Even traditional brick and mortar retail stores like Barnes & Noble Booksellers now adequately stock all new music releases contained on vinyl records. Amazon.com is another popular retailer of modern vinyl records. Record companies are even catering to the trend by convincing popular artists to release a vinyl version of their latest albums. A trip to any independent record store is bound to lead to disbelief from naysayers who proudly declared the death of physical media much too prematurely upon the release and popularity of the iPod. Today, vinyl recording collecting is a growing trend. Much like their parents and Gen-Xers before them, millennials can be seen purchasing vinyl records at a feverish pace. The question this raises is if some of these items will become highly sought after years from now. The answer is yes, but by how much lies in what kind of albums the children and grandchildren of millennials choose to pursue. For now, it seems that physical media has conquered digital media, and the future of vinyl record collecting is here to stay.
S957403
several well-planned advertising campaigns that catered to independent record stores, several popular artists started to release special edition vinyl records containing limited releases as well as special tracks and collectible album covers. Taking it one step further, a lot of the record companies producing these fine works of art created a yearly shopping day known as “Record Store Day that would cater to limited-edition releases from popular artists such as Nine Inch Nails and Green Day, among others spanning all popular genres of music. Most of these limited releases sold out each and every time they were offered, and some sell for impressive sums on the secondary market. It was this event that attracted the younger generation to the hobby of vinyl record collecting. At first this was thought to be a fad, something unsustainable in the age of iPhones and iPods, but since 2012 and even before that, albums released on vinyl have, in some cases, been almost outselling every other format, including digital. This trend indicates that even younger enthusiasts would much rather own a piece of physical media

As an Apple computer enthusiast, I am often seen as someone who praises technology and elegant design, along with common sense functionality. Thanks in part to the creation of the Apple iPod, which became the standard to which all digital music players would be judged, Apple helped deliver a decisive blow to the world of physical media. Instead of having to drive to a music store, music enthusiasts could simply download complete albums from the comfort of their own living room within a matter of minutes. This dramatically changed how music was bought and sold, and as a result, chain stores like Sam Goody, Tower Records, and the like are almost entirely defunct in today’s digital age. The digital revolution brought about by the Apple iPod is no doubt here to stay. Movies and video games can now be delivered in a similar manner direct to a consumer’s home in a matter of minutes. Ironically, for collectors and enthusiasts of physical media, there is still good news in these fast-paced digital times. It is routinely believed by some socalled experts that digital media peaked somewhere around 2012. After this time frame historic trends have been taking hold that have given hope to collectors and enthusiasts of all physical media. On Jan. 3, 2017, The Guardian featured an online news article titled, “Record Sales: Vinyl Hits 25-Year High. Was the death of physical media portrayed by the news conglomerates and starry-eyed technology execs overblown? Collectors of vinyl records seem to think so, and with good reason. Vinyl record collecting has been around for decades, ever since the fragile black discs reached their proverbial peak in the 1960s, only to be challenged by eight-track tapes and finally toppled due to the invention of the cassette and the mass market penetration of the compact disc. In the 1990s, vinyl was thought to be nearly extinct aside from a small, but growing minority of collectors who feverishly collected classic
and hard-to-find vintage albums from their favorite artists. It was at this time that vinyl record collecting started to rise exponentially. Ironically, it would be the mass market success of the Apple iPod and other digital media players that would propel vinyl records to new heights. The sound quality of a vinyl record along with the unique album covers and decorated inserts that they came packaged in was sorely lacking in an age where all digital downloads were almost exactly the same. This caused several successful musicians to reconsider how they released their latest works. What if a modern day artist would release physical vinyl records containing their latest music? Would the public take notice? By this time, record collecting was gaining more and more traction along with increased media coverage thanks in part to vintage rarities like The Beatles’ banned “butcher album cover for their classic “Yesterday and Today album selling for “record highs at auction. The plan to bring modernera records to the masses worked brilliantly. Thanks to

The 60th anniversary edition of the Fishersville/ Shenandoah Antique Expo, which was held in May, was a good one for both buyers and sellers alike. The weather was nearly perfect, with just one pesky mid-Atlantic spring thundershower threatening Friday afternoon, then graciously passing by. The Friday and Saturday crowds were strong, and while not recordbreaking, were amongst the best in several years. Sunday was a particularly strong day for furniture sales. Many customers stopped by the front desk or sought out the promoters to express how pleased they were with the variety and quality of merchandise available. Equally satisfied were the hundreds of

Film star postcards published in New Zealand are collecting rarities. Those printed for The Tiki Publishing Co. during 1945 and 1946 are a challenge for collectors to find and have a bit of a mystery attached to them. The postcards were available by mail order from P.O. Box 5035, Lambton, Quay, Wellington, in sets of 12 at the cost of two shillings (20 cents) per set. Postage was included in the price, and payment had to be by postal notes. New Zealand business directories for the years 1945 and 1946 contain no street address for The Tiki Publishing Co., nor do the Wellington telephone directories have listings for the business during these years. No directories of private box holders for these years are available to consult. Online searches in the New Zealand Companies Office and Archives New Zealand databases found no record of the company. The Companies Office said it was possible that the details were not computerised because of the age of the records. Another possibility is the company was not a registered one. During the era Tiki postcards were produced, the major overseas film companies had their New Zealand distribution offices in Wellington. It would have been easy for someone with contacts in the film companies to obtain the photographs for reproduction

When advertisements for the Tiki postcards began appearing in Filmland, the number of head shot sets had increased to five, and three sets of Hollywood bathing beauties had been added. “The idea of using the most basic equipment and being able to make something was almost magical,” said David Kauffman. “A person can take a fire, a hammer, an anvil or even a big rock, a piece of steel, throw in some basic blacksmithing steps and make a real, tangible item that started as an idea in their head.” Interested individuals can learn these skills in an upcoming blacksmithing class from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 16, at the 1719 Herr House and Museum, 1849 Hans Herr Drive, Willow Street, in Lancaster County, Pa. Learn how to start a fire, make coke from coal, heat steel, and use blacksmithing tools to make a hook rack, all under instruction from a master smith. To sign up, readers may visit www.hansherr.org or call 717-464-4438. Registration costs $65 per person and is
due by Friday, Sept. 1. The class is open to only 10 students on a first-come, firstserved basis. This class is not for children under 16. For those unable to attend the Sept. 16 class, the Herr House and Museum also offers individual classes where students can experience one-onone learning with a master smith to make a simple project. Individual classes can be scheduled weekdays through November. Individual classes
cost $75. To learn more, visit www.hansherr.org. Blacksmith classes are part of over 50 Lancaster Roots events scheduled for 2017. Lancaster Roots combines the events of the Lancaster Mennonite Historical Society and the 1719 Herr House and Museum. Through public presentations, food, music, field trips, and classes, these events reveal Lancaster and its people: their stories, culture, and history.

Some longtime New Zealand postcard dealers say they have not seen any of The Tiki Publishing Co.’s postcards. Dealers usually sell them as single cards between NZ $3 and NZ $10 each (U.S. $2 to U.S. $8), with the condition of the postcard and the importance of the subject influencing the price.
