Liberty Antiques Festival Slated For Sept. 27 And 28 The top lot of the auction was this Fish Bitters bottle (“W.H. Ware/Patented 1866”), made in Pennsylvania, ca. 1866-75, light to medium lime green, over 11.5 inches tall, selling for $32,760. A Seaworth Bitters Company (N.J.) bottle, made ca. 1880-90 in a unique form, almost identical to the Cape May Lighthouse in New Jersey, aqua colored and in perfect condition, sold for $25,740 in Glass Works Auctions’ online-only Summer Sizzler Auction #132, which closed on July 22. A smaller amber version of the bottle garnered $9,945.
A Seaworth Bitters Company bottle, made ca. 1880-90 in a unique form, amber colored, and, at 6.5 inches in height, smaller than its 11.25-inch-tall aqua counterpart in the auction, brought $9,945.

Overall, the auction grossed a little more than $350,000, including buyer’s premium. All bidding was handled through www.glswrk-auction.com. The aqua Seaworth Bitters bottle stood 11.25 inches tall and boasted a smooth base and tooled lip. It came from the Sidney Genius collection and is possibly the only known example in perfect condition. The smaller amber bottle, from the same collection, was just 6.5 inches tall. The Cape May Lighthouse was built in 1859 by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and remains in use today. As impressive as the taller bottle was, it was not the top lot of the auction. That honor went to a Fish Bitters bottle (“W.H. Ware/Patented 1866”), which finished at $32,760. The bottle, made in Pennsylvania, Continued on page 2

Material Culture Forum Program To Be Held Sept. 12
Join LancasterHistory for this year’s final installment of its artifact-focused programming series, the Material Culture Forum. On Thursday, Sept. 12, LancasterHistory curatorial staff will present in-depth object studies of Lancaster County quilts, followed by a presentation by acclaimed quilter, author, and speaker Kyra Hicks, who will discuss 200 glorious years of African American quilting in America. At 4 p.m., LancasterHistory assistant curator Tori Pyle will present a close look and conversation about the ways in which we can learn and interpret social history from quilts. At 4:30 p.m., Hicks’ presentation will begin. Hicks is a self-taught, skilled crafter who uses cotton to explore political, religious, family and romantic themes. Her original story quilts document her experiences as a young, black, single woman. Her work has been shown in such prestigious venues as the American Craft Museum in New York, the Smithsonian Institution’s Renwick Gallery in Washington, D.C., the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago, and the Wadsworth Atheneum in Hartford, and is included in the permanent collections of the Museum of Arts and Design in New York City and the Fenimore Art Museum in Cooperstown, N.Y. Her work has also been featured in “Essence,” “Folk Art,” An American pot lid for “Perfumers, H.P. & W.C. It’s a bit early for Halloween, but we were out at the antique malls today looking for some items for my daughter’s birthday party. I am a big fan of going to the malls to find those special treasures for all my holiday and birthday decorating. As part of Mary’s party, I decided to hit the vintage clothing racks for some witchy-looking clothing. The theme of the party will be around a particularly famous children’s series of books. Dress-up for the girls is so much fun, and four long, flowing 1970s formal gowns were mine for about $20. The girls will have a blast dressing up in them, and they probably will get plenty of additional use out of the clothing as Halloween costumes this year. The vintage and retro look is one that is hot right now. At the antique mall, in thinking about Halloween coming up, I saw not only a host of items that could be adapted for Halloween costumes but also lots of cool stuff that could be used in decorating. The irony is that several hours earlier we had gone into a big box craft store where the prices were double for many of the similiar items that I saw in the antique mall. I kept wondering why I would pay a fortune for new when I could support the antiques trade and buy something vintage for less money. Over the years, we have acquired many of our Halloween, Easter, and Christmas decorations at antique malls. Of course, there are wonderful rare holiday items that demand respectable prices. I am thinking about the more mundane items or, even more importantly, those things that can be modified for holiday use. In a few weeks, we will be hosting a dinner for a retiring member of our board of trustees. He is a serious photographer, and so I am hitting the antique malls to buy
suggestions include the following: -Purchasing inexpensive oil lamps, light them, and have them burning for an eerie effect. -Check out not only the clothing but also especially the hats. A hat can make a costume super fast. -Kitschy tourism souvenirs often have a weird feel to them. Shell sconces and lamps, carved coconuts, and the like are fun. -Repurposing vintage

inexpensive camera bodies to be used as table decorations for the event. They will be cool, they will make great souvenirs, and the price is frankly cheaper than commercial decorations. Of course, I am not advocating destroying or abusing priceless antiques, but I am suggesting that there are many wonderful items that can be acquired as secondhand goods and used for holiday decorating. The excitement is building for the Wallace Nutting Collectors Club Fall Convention, being held Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, Oct. 3, 4, and 5, at the historic resort destination of Saratoga Springs, N.Y. Beginning Thursday afternoon, from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m., and again on Friday morning from 7:30 to 9 a.m., the expanded Wallace Nutting Marketplace will take place at the Hilton Garden Inn Hotel at 125 South Broadway. Last year was such a success, the club decided to enlarge the exciting buy/sell/trade event. Collectors and dealers from around the country will be displaying a wide variety of Wallace Nutting photos and furniture as well as photography by other 20th-century photographers. The marketplace is open to the public. Immediately after the marketplace on Friday will be the annual club meeting followed by the following club member presentations: Tieler Niedzwieki, “Wallace Nutting and Generation X”; Scott Jones, “Researching HandTinted Photography”; Norm Bollen, “Artist and Historic Preservationist, Rufus Grider”; and Mike Gridley, “Early Photographic History of the Adirondacks.” At 1 p.m. on Friday, there will be a guided tour for club members titled “The Good Life: North Broadway” by executive director of the Saratoga Springs Preservation

Captain America #1 Soars To $915,000, Lifts Heritage Auctions’ Comics And Comic Art Auction Above $9.3 Million Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #1 Brings Highest Price Ever For 1980s Comic Book One of the finest known copies of one of the most sought-after comics in the hobby exceeded its lofty preauction expectations to lead Heritage Auctions’ Comics and Comic Art Auction to $9,330,161 over the three-days of Aug. 1, 2, and 3 in Dallas, Texas. The sale boasted nearperfect sell-through rates of 99.8 percent by value and 99.7 percent by lots sold. Nearly three dozen collectors made bids for “Captain America Comics #1” San Francisco Pedigree (Timely, 1941), CGC NM 9.4, off-white to white pages, until it sold for $915,000. The book comes from the storied San Francisco pedigree collection, a trove many Golden Age collectors rank among the very best, arguably behind only the Edgar Church/Mile High collection. “We thought this ‘Captain America #1’ was one of the most desirable comics we had ever offered,” said Heritage Auctions vice president Barry

Theriault’s Marquis Doll Auction Keeps A Promise 18th-Century English Wooden Doll Sells For $155,000 was a superb elaborate original trousseau comprised of eight dresses, undergarments, bonnets and accessories. Her pre-sale estimate of $3,500 to $4,500 was quickly surpassed with a final selling price of $31,000. The sale featured the collection of Mary Lou Rubright of Shoemakersville, Pa., put together in the 1980s. Lot #1 in the auction was a 22-inch French bisque doll from the 1915 era in her original Red Cross Nursing costume. Whether it was her artistic poignant expression that echoed the famous WWI posters or her provenance, including the existence of the nursing certificate earned by her original owner in 1917 just prior to joining the Red Cross nursing corps in war-torn France, the doll was in great demand, the final bidding between a collector whose mother had been a nurse, a museum that recognized the importance of the doll, and a front row bidder whose profession was, or course,
nursing. Bidding ended at $57,500, against a pre-sale estimate of $8,500 to $11,000. Also from the Rubright collection was the cover doll made by the German firm of Kammer and Reinhardt in 1910 from an original sculpture by Berlin artist Arthur Lewin-Funcke. The doll had been featured in various magazines, including the cover of “Doll News” in 1969, with the apt description that he
appeared to be a fine young man “deadly earnest about life, liberty and the pursuit of education.” The doll realized $30,000 (pre-sale $18,000 to $25,000). Another rare example from the Kammer and Reinhardt firm was also from their art doll reform movement of the 1910 era. It was the extremely rare model 104, also sculpted by LewinFuncke, whose daughter served as the model. It went
to $75,000 (pre-sale estimate $60,000 to $85,000). The auction featured 410 lots with many choices in all price ranges, and categories and the standing-room-only crowd stayed strong and vitalized during the entire funfilled auction. All lots along with realized prices can be viewed at www.theriault.com. Theriault’s next Marquis Auction weekend is for
scheduled Saturday and Sunday, Oct.26 and 27, at the Westin Chicago North Shore. Day one will feature the collection of the late Marilyn Bard of Cherry Hill, N.J., and day two will be part III of the Rodney Waller collection of Madame Alexander Dolls. Theriault’s is based in Annapolis, Md. For more information, email info@theriaults.com.

For more than 250 years, she resided in the Curtis estates of a British aristocratic family, passed from one generation to another. She was named Miss Timber, and although no one knew exactly why, it was a conjecture that the name was an acknowledgment of the tall piece of wood that went into her construction. After all, the early doll was a regal 27 inches tall, an extremely rare and luxurious size for a wooden doll of the mid-1700s, and her rarity was only enhanced by her remarkable original state of preservation. At Theriault’s annual midsummer Marquis Antique Doll Auction on July 22, she soared to ever more heights, realizing $155,000 against a pre-sale of $35,000 to $45,000. Miss Timber was not the only doll that sparked a bidding war at the auction. There was also a fine 15-inch Grodnertal wooden doll known as “tuck comb” in reference to the carved ornamental hair comb at her crown. Included with the doll

Swann Galleries’ Vintage Posters auction on Aug. 7 was a lively event with active bidding across all platforms. “Many of the auction’s niche collecting categories saw heated competition for trophy pieces, including sections on propaganda, sports and auto racing, as well as beach and summer resort posters,” noted Nicholas D. Lowry, Vintage Posters director and auction house president. The sale saw six record prices and brought a number of posters to market for the first time. The house’s most extensive selection of automobile posters to date saw competitive bidding from car aficionados. Highlights

Field And Range Firearms Auction To Offer Collectors Outstanding Choices Morphy’s To Hold Three-Day Sale On Sept. 10, 11, And 12 This full-blued gun was exquisitely decorated by master engraver Tim George, who apprenticed under Colt Firearms master engraver Ken Hurst before establishing his own business. Described in Morphy’s catalog as “an absolute treasure and work of art,” the revolver is offered with its original factory box and estimated at $5,000-$10,000. Also among the many revolver highlights is Lot 3340, a fantastic Texas Gun Collectors Association factory-engraved
This rare Joseph Henry contract single-shot U.S. secondary martial flintlock pistol, 1807-08, ex. Robert Sadler collection, will be estimated at $3,000-$5,000. of the three-day firearms bonanza will be Lot 3028, a magnificent Merwin & Hulbert .44 caliber cartridge revolver with lavish factory engraving and an 1873 serial number. The 2nd Model open-top, six-shot, single-action gun displays sharply engraved images of the Mexican Eagle with a snake on the left side and a partridge on the right side, as well as scrollwork, chick tracks and punch dots. Retaining 98 percent of its original factory nickel plating and with near-mint grips, this collector’s showpiece is estimated at $6,000-$9,000. Another top-shelf revolver is Lot 1386, an engraved and gold-inlaid Colt single-action Army Revolver made in 1998.
and gold banded Colt Third Generation single-action Army Revolver with a relief-carved steer-head grip. A special gun that would be a prize for any Colt collection, it comes in its original hardwood display case and is entered as Lot 3340 with a $4,000-$6,000 estimate. In the antique flintlock category, there are several especially fine pistols. Lot 1005 is a rare 1807-08 Joseph Henry (Philadelphia) contract singleshot secondary martial pistol from the Robert Sadler collection. Immediately following at Lot 1006, a scarce U.S. North Berlin (Conn.) Model 1811 Transitional, is highly coveted by collectors of U.S. martial pistols, being one of only 550 that

were made. Each of the guns is estimated at $3,000-$5,000. Collectors of long guns can choose from a stellar selection of rare and historically important rifles, muskets, shotguns and carbines. The lineup is led by Lot 2064, a fine early Custer 7th Cavalry Range U.S. Model 1873 Springfield trapdoor carbine in .45-.70 Government caliber. Extremely clean, with 100percent original, correct parts, it boasts very early features such as a thick, long wrist; an 1873 pinned rear sight, and a US carbine buttplate. The bolt is stamped “MODEL 1873.” The catalog description notes that it “never went through 1879-1880 rebuild,” a point that would be significant to antique gun historians and collectors. The presale estimate is $5,000-$8,000. Lot 1251, an Ansley H. Fox (Philadelphia) A Grade Double side-by-side was made in 1916 and features Krupp blued steel barrels. It comes with a hang tag and Callahan factory letter (est. $3,000-$5,000). Lot 1849 is a Winchester Model 23 two-barrel shotgun set with two beavertail forends carved with a fleur-delis and wave checkered pattern. Both barrels are of monoblock manufacture, with Set No. 1 in 20 gauge and Set No. 2 in 28 gauge. The firearm appears to have been factory test-fired only. Offered in the original Winchester fitted case, this lot is estimated at $2,500-$3,500. In the semiautomatic category, standouts include Lot 2121, an early and rare U.S. Marine Corps Colt Model 1911 pistol from the second shipment dispatched to the Marines in 1913, and Lot 1115, a factory-engraved Colt Government MKIV Series 70 .45 ACP pistol that was shipped in 1984. It comes with documentation and its original Colt velvet-lined display box. Each of these highly desirable guns is estimated at $4,000-$6,000. “We know what gun collectors want to know before making a purchase. They like to have as much detail as possible about a firearm and, especially
if it’s an antique, what its history is,” said Morphy Auctions’ president, Dan Morphy. “That’s why we go to the extra mile to produce a beautiful catalog with first-class images and descriptions. Our team of firearms specialists spends months

Witman Holds Auction For Ned Foltz Folk Carvings, Redware, Baskets Among Items Sold Father and son Luke and Clarke Witman of Witman Auctioneers held an onsite auction for Ned Foltz at Foltz’s pottery shop outside Reinholds, in rural northern Lancaster County, Pa., on Aug. 24. Witman has held a number of sales for Foltz and his late wife, Gwen, over the years. The items sold included antiques and contemporary folk art the couple collected. Foltz has an enormous collection of Pennsylvania German contemporary folk art. A large number of Walter and June Gottshall wood carvings sold. Walter (1921-2018) and wife June (age 98) of Reinholds are well-known for
their folk carvings. Walter carved, and June painted. Their work has a sizable following in today’s market, and the majority of the work sold well at the sale. Walter was Hattie Brunner’s nephew. His father, Luke Gottshall (1899-1993), was also a folk artist, as was his mother, Fannie (1891-1976). Unlike other auctions held for Foltz, this one did not include the potter’s work. A former schoolteacher, Foltz has been a redware potter in the Pennsylvania German tradition for over 50 years. On the topic of redware done in this tradition during the last half of the 20th century and now 21st century, the name Foltz comes up first. Second is
the name Lester Breininger (1935-2011). Unlike the late Breininger, Foltz operates a one-man shop producing the work on his own. Some antique redware was in the sale, along with an assortment of baskets, prints, and woodenware, but folk carving was the dominant category. Tramp art carvings by Tim Strawser sold very well. His work is collectible. Several carvings by Dan Strawser Jr. also sold well. Strawser Jr. was set up, along with his mother, folk painter Barbara Strawser (Walter and June’s daughter), at the Friends of the Robesonia Furnace Summer Show and Sale that took place on the same day. The 52nd Lititz Springs Park Outdoor Antiques and Collectibles Show was also Aug. 24. Aaron Martin Auction Service held a sale for Larry Strickler outside of Lititz on Rabbit Hill Road the same day, which included some wood carvings attributed to Joseph Moyer (1883-1962). Moyer, of Reading, Pa., worked in the late 1940s and early ’50s alongside Fannie Zook. The work is very similiar. A songbird with both Moyer and Zook underneath brought

Elegant Antiques, Tiffany Glass, Lighting And Fine Art At Fontaine’s On Sept. 14 Over 100 Pieces Of Fine Art Glass Among Highlights John Fontaine and his staff have been busy this summer acquiring hundreds of consignments from all over the country to kick off the fall auction season at Fontaine Auction Gallery, beginning on Saturday, Sept. 14, at 11 a.m., with an antiques and fine art auction. This auction will include 450 lots of antiques and fine art, over 100 pieces of rare art glass by Tiffany Studios and Quezal; 19th- and 20th-century lighting by Tiffany Studios, Duffner and Kimberly, Handel, Pairpoint, and Wilkinson; American Victorian, Gothic and figural carved furniture; leaded glass windows; fine clocks; music boxes and automatons; paintings; Royal Vienna and KPM porcelains; gold and diamond jewelry; fine silver; cameo glass; bronze and marble statuary; Black Forest items and more.
“We’ve taken our time in putting together a high-quality auction with top names from Tiffany to Hermes,” said Fontaine. “From elegant decorative objects like leaded glass lamps and French silver vases to fine sculpture and paintings, this auction will appeal to buyers with a taste for the finer things in life.” An expected auction headliner is a large group of monumental and religious stained glass windows attributed to Joseph Lauber (18551948). Estimated at $50$100,000, the window grouping, “Sermon on the Mount,” ca. 1905-14, forms a scene of Jesus with a glowing halo, seated and delivering a sermon to various groups of people amid a detailed landscape. When fully assembled, the windows measure 25 feet high by 16 feet wide. The four main windows use heavy drapery glass, multiple plating and acid burned flash glass while above them is a grouping featuring windows with Bible passages. Lauber apprenticed under John La Farge and worked for Tiffany Studios from 1888-92. He was a talented artist, having a range of works from windows, sculpture, mural painting and mosaic design.
