Bird decoys were used in North America for sport until the advent of hunting regulations in the early 20th century. After The Lacey Act of 1900 and subsequent Migratory Bird Treaty Act of 1918, while still used to hunt, decoys also started to be collected and prized as masterpieces of American folk art. The unparalleled collection of 1,400 wildfowl decoys at Shelburne Museum in Shelburne, Vt., was established with a 1952 gift of more than 400 superior examples from Joel Barber, a New York City architect, artist, and carver. Barber’s groundbreaking 1934 book “Wild Fowl Decoys” was the first to identify the importance of bird decoys as a uniquely American art form. Since then, Shelburne Museum’s decoy collection has grown to become among the finest and most comprehensive in the country. Newly researched essays address the history of Shelburne’s

COLLECTOR CHATS WITH PETER S. SEIBERT This Week: The End Of Fancy?
I was having lunch with a colleague the other week, and we were discussing how we were passing on to our children sets of china and flatware. This was something that our parents did for us, and we, in turn, are doing for our kids. But, the question is whether this kind of living is relevant in
me, and I try not to bash other generations. That being said, it is true that for all of us, the idea of fancy dinner parties is becoming less of a reality. The common answer to all of this is that people have little time to cook, so fast meals and paper plates are the answer. I have to confess that I am not sure I agree with this. In the late 19th century, people began to invent laborsaving devices. Vacuums, washing machines, and the like have their genesis in the idea that if we save time on chores that we could enrich ourselves by devoting attention to the nobler pursuits of art, music, etc. Instead, what it
did was create the inadvertent arms race of everyone wanting to have a cleaner house than their neighbor, whiter clothing than their friends, etc. It was the birth of over-cleanliness. So, I am not sure that saving this time with paper plates and prepackaging does free us to pursue other endeavors. Instead, I suspect it is driving us in other directions. One of those directions is the focus upon experiential opportunities. Millenials and Gen Xers love experiences that are unique, and they spend more of their disposable income on this than on things such as antiques. That being said, perhaps the trend of the future

Odd is defined as being different from what is usual or expected; strange. Hard-tofind objects in the antique world typically refer to things that were produced in a very limited amount, or things that had a low survival rate. For the month of September, the Antique and Art Emporium dealers will fill the store display case with various odd and hard-to-find a n t i q u e s . the 21st century? The other day, I saw an article online about how many millennials lack basic cooking skills and purchase either preprepared food or ingredients for simple one-pot cooking. More complicated cooking and dining seems to be lost. The article went on to say that even some of the meals in a bag that groceries are producing have to be dumbed down because many millenials cannot cook the recipes. Please know that I am not bashing millenials. The old song lyric, “Why can’t they be like we are, perfect in every way, what’s the matter with kids today? resonates with

Avon collectibles and Precious Moments figurines generally have nominal value and would widely be viewed as tchotchkees. The Fairy Tale That Wasn’t: Collecting The 1981 Royal Wedding Forget what happened later. Pretend you don’t know. On July 29, 1981, Prince Charles married Lady Diana Spencer at St. Paul’s Cathedral in London. “Here is the stuff of which fairytales are made,” said the Archbishop of Canterbury. The truth was more complicated. The commemoratives, by contrast, can be objectively documented. On the 20th anniversary of Diana’s death, here’s a look back at some. This article is limited to ceramic commemoratives made in Great Britain. The engagement was announced Feb. 24, 1981. Officially, the potteries had five months to bring their wares to market. In fact, they had been preparing for the marriage of the heir to the throne since the mid-1970s. The emergence of Lady Diana Spencer as a possible bride in the summer of 1980 gave hope to an industry devastated by a recession. Diana was 19 and the daughter of Earl Spencer. She lived in London and worked as a preschool teacher. In the words of the London Times, she was “young and shy enough not to have been seriously involved with other men.” Designers set to work months before Charles proposed. There was, however, one unexpected detail. Westminster Abbey was the assumed location. “Abbey ceremony will be a grand occasion” was the Times headline. The surprise announcement on March 4 that the wedding would take place at St. Paul’s must have been heart-stopping.
A Carlton mug commemorates the wedding with a jab at the jug-eared groom (Denhams). taste. The elusive quality of good design also counted. The Design Council, which was founded to help British industry, pronounced most wedding souvenirs, “Appalling, abysmal, worse even than we expected. We are amazed that people will buy these crummy things.” Buy them they did. The biggest selling point was Diana. Although she had been tracked by photographers for months, most commemoratives were based on a few images: The engagement announcement, Feb. 24, 1981 together at last. The engagement was announced at Buckingham Palace, where the couple was interviewed and photographed. Diana looked hunched and overwhelmed in the blue suit that she picked out at Harrods with her mother. It was the antithesis of the Lady Di style: a long skirt,
A Royal Albert plate signed by Diana sold for $1,015.75 in 2009 at Heritage Auctions. The first mug by Britannia Antiques of London was in stores six days after the announcement. Staffordshire Potteries was also ready for the good news. Twenty-thousand white china mugs based on newspaper cutouts were shipped to Woolworths. But these rush jobs weren’t really in the spirit of the event. Something special was required. Certain points had to be kept in mind. There were the couple’s rank and character. So popular was the engagement photo-op that it would be impossible to form a collection without several specimens. Below are the major categories (most categories also apply to commemoratives based on other images). Together (side by side), busts of Charles and Diana surrounded by a red heart on an armorial ground, was a transfer by an unknown designer that was used by ceramic manufacturers around the world. British firms included Arthur Wood, Midwinter, Palissy, and Wade. The transfer was applied (not always with strict regard to proportion) to goblets, plates, vases, thimbles, boxes, teacups, and bells. Lowry added, “As expected, the war posters and propaganda sold exceptionally well, with nearly 80 percent of lots offered finding buyers.” War poster sales accounted for nearly half of the total revenue of the auction. “Fin de siècle” works performed well, with a pencil drawing by Alphonse Mucha nearly doubling its estimate to sell for $10,400. The Art Nouveau master was also represented by “Zodiac,” 1900, “Job,” 1898, and “Salon des Cent,” 1896 ($11,250, $6,563 and $6,500, respectively). More than 600 colorful advertisements and announcements crossed the block at Swann Auction Galleries’ sale of Vintage Posters on Aug. 2. The encyclopedic selection represented a century’s worth of development in graphic design, history and technology. In honor of the centennial anniversary of the U.S.’s entry into World War I, the sale featured the largest selection of war propaganda the house has ever offered. According to Nicholas D. Lowry, Swann Galleries’ president and director of vintage posters, the varied designs from 1917 are the result of the government giving illustrators free rein to create striking imagery that continues to resonate today. Highlights from this category include works by James

Fred and Maxine Zumthurn of California accumulated so many pieces of art glass and other antiques over the course of their long and fruitful lives (Maxine has passed away), it will take at least two auctions – possibly more – to liquidate their entire collection. The first of these auctions is planned for Saturday, Sept. 9, in the gallery of Woody Auction at 120 Third St. in Douglass, Kan. “Part one of this exciting collection is sure to catch the attention of serious collectors,” said Jason Woody of Woody Auction. “Sold will be brides baskets, pickle castors, napkin rings, R. And, as always at Woody Auction, every item will be sold to the highest bidder, without reserve.” The auction will begin at 9:30 a.m. (Central time). For those unable to attend in person, online bidding will be provided by LiveAuctioneers.com. Absentee bidding will also be accepted. Part two of the collection will be sold on Saturday, Dec. 2. A Spode vase depicting Highgrove, the Prince of Wales’ country house (Denham’s). duchy’s coat of arms, a cartoon of Charles and Diana, and the inscription “Congratulations and loyal greetings to the Duke and Duchess of Cornwall on the occasion of their wedding July 29th 1981.” Swap the bride’s portrait and wedding date and the design could have been recycled for Charles’ second marriage in 2005 to Camilla Parker-Bowles, who is known as the Duchess of Cornwall. Rustic wares: Some commemoratives are timeless with century-old motifs decorating traditional forms. Others belong squarely to their period. Take the stoneware commemoratives. In the 1970s there was a fashion for brown stoneware dishes. Patchwork, Bracken, and Woodstock were representative pattern names. The worst was over by 1980, though a mitigated version of the style survived in the Bilton wedding mug. The body is off-white with brown lettering and ornament; the interior and rim are glazed brown. Occasionally studio pottery commemoratives show up on eBay: squat and massive vessels embellished with the couple’s names. Vases and chalices: Nothing dishwasher safe here. For serious collectors only: A Wedgwood blue jasper vase decorated with portrait medallions. By Spode, a vase with a scene of Highgrove and a chalice with coats of arms. The high-end commemoratives were made in limited editions. Many sold out before production began, which explains the absence of advertising in magazines, like Country Life and The Illustrated London News. Today they pass through salerooms (often in the original box) for up to half off the

Studios lists all Charles’ titles as well as the Spencer family’s stately home (Althorp). Both pieces feature engagement portraits and the date. A more dubious engagement commemorative is the unmarked mug that has only the year “1981” and a pap shot of Diana taken the previous November. Probably made on spec. Figurines: Diana was a favorite figurine subject. The ones made at the time of the wedding convey her girlish prettiness. The soft arms and dark blond hair are period details. Royal Doulton introduced two pairs in 1981 and ‘82. The first pair is HRH the Prince of Wales (HN 2883) in his investiture robes and Lady Diana Spencer (HN 2885) in a polka-dotted evening dress. The second pair is HRH the Prince of Wales (HN 2884) in the uniform of the Welsh guards (he was married in the uniform of a naval commander) and HRH the Princess of Wales in her wedding dress (HN 2887). Coalport’s wedding-era figurines include Lady Diana Spencer (she’s wearing that engagement suit) and HRH The Prince of Wales. Before he gained a reputation for doddering eccentricity, Charles was called “action man,” hence the safari suit and binoculars. The most romantic is a group of the

By Jess Grimm Interior designers from all over the region were not disappointed when they came out Aug. 10, 11, 12, and 13 to enjoy another Scott Antique Markets show in Atlanta, Ga. Designers, shop owners, and others were looking for unique, quality items to take to new customers. Lathem Gordon and Cate Dunning, with Gordon Dunning Interior Design, enjoyed a weekend hunting for new items to use in clients’ houses. “We are having such fun with this botanical gallery,” said Gordon and Dunning, speaking about a variety of floral prints they found. “Scott is our favorite hunting grounds!” Jamie Kolodziej, who owns an Etsy shop called Sweet Tea Salvage in the suburbs of

During her most recent trip, she also found a vintage bandana she used for her dog, Chief. “I purchased vintage brooches this past weekend, which will be upcycled into bolo ties,” stated Kolodziej. “My boyfriend and I have made attending the show a monthly tradition, and aside from sourcing beautiful vintage brooches, I’ve added vintage jewelry and accessories to my own collection and have a small army of taxidermy gracing the walls of our home.” Shoppers came out in the thousands over the weekend to hunt for intriguing and unique items. One customer came in looking for ideas for outdoor decoration, while another came looking for art they had seen from a previous vendor. A third shopper said they came looking for tables for a sunroom and left with antique boxes to decorate that same room. Joe Reichter, a vendor from Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., searched for three weeks in south Florida for merchandise to fill his booth, including French antiques, lamps and chandeliers and decorative accessories. He said he has noticed customers looking for quality over quantity. “People shopping are looking for greatlooking pieces, good quality,

supply when describing the marvelous detail seen in lot 348, a 38-inch-wide-by-20-inchdeep diorama of a German town. Translations of its various Dresden scrap-decorated signs indicate the display was constructed to celebrate the 50th wedding anniversary of Frederich I, Grand Duke of Baden (1826-1907), and his grand duchess, Princess Louise of Prussia, in 1906. The entire town is constructed of lithographed card-stock buildings, bridges, people, rivers and trees, with beaded pin and garland decoration. An incredible display housed in a period glass and wood case with hinged lid, it is estimated at $3,000-$5,000.
