Auction in the Apple App Store or on Google Play. “Dr. Shaffer has been a staple in the antiques community for over 40 years, and his collection is truly one to be admired,” said Stephen Turner, the owner of Briggs Auction Inc. “We are honored Dr. Shaffer chose us to handle this important and historic collection, and we hope that it will appeal to a wide range of collectors, history buffs and anyone who’s looking for a piece of early America and/or local Pennsylvania antiques.” Dr. Shaffer grew up on a farm in Wayne County, Pa., which he later gifted to the state. It is now known as the Varden Conservation Area. In 1960, after college at Penn State and a stint in the Army as a veterinarian, he moved to Delaware County, where he opened his (still thriving) veterinary practice. Shortly after, he took up residence in a home on the ca. 1721 Booth farm in Bethel Township, also known as the Garret-BoothCheyney House, which he relished as much for its ties to Colonial America as the farmland itself. “I am obsessed with history,” said

This incident required a month for “head and eye” injuries. Adventures in Babysitting According to the late Milton Flower, who collected oral histories in the 1940s, Schimmel roamed the Cumberland Valley along the Conodoguinet Creek between the farms of Germanspeaking families. He would sleep in outbuildings and barns in exchange for carvings or doing chores. Many of the carvings he exchanged were gifts and toys for children, perhaps inspired by their own animals. Roosters of various size were his most prolific subject. “In Flower’s era, many historians treated oral tradition and local legend as scholarship and didn’t use and cite

An Odd Bird “‘Old Schimmel’ the German who for many years tramped through this and adjoining counties making his headquarters in jails and almshouses, died at the almshouse on Sunday. His only occupation was carving heads of animals out of soft pine wood. These he would sell for a few pennies each. He was apparently a man of very surly disposition,” read the Carlisle Evening Sentinel, Aug. 7, 1890. It is unknown when Schimmel arrived in the country. An 1870 census puts him in the county prison, born in Hesse-Darmstadt, Germany. He did not speak English. By today’s terms, a serial alcoholic, many colorful period newspaper accounts exist, the earliest being 1869, when, roaring drunk and plastered in mud, he trashed the office of a lumberyard. Upon being ejected, he hurled rocks into the yard until overcome by return volley fire and escorted to jail. In 1879, a drunk Schimmel at a public sale attacked a man with an axe. His victim managed to hit him over the head with a stone, sending him unconscious. One paper reported he had died of the incident, and he nearly did, but recovered. In 1882, Schimmel’s addiction came close to finishing the job when he stepped off a train moving at near full

Eagle Eyed Whatever crucible of substance abuse, penury, or echoes from his past life pushed him to the fringes of society, unable to communicate with most people, Schimmel did have a direct connection to his creations, which he never signed. It didn’t matter that his blasted body had dossed beneath a bridge overnight, or that his brain hallucinated in the grip of withdrawal, his hands and his instinct could feel the creation within each piece of wood, ready to emerge. Schimmel carved mostly birds and animals, such as roosters, parrots (eaglets), squirrels, and dogs, and, of course, his eagles. Patriotic fervor around the 1876 Centennial resulted in great pride of the eagle. “We know there are accounts of Schimmel’s eagles adorning a flag pole, portico roof, and fence post,” said Pass. Milton Flower noted the influence of the Hapsburg eagle on the style of Schimmel’s carvings. His are not conventional late 19th-century depictions of our national symbol; they are unique to Schimmel. Carved from pine, the eagles are either smooth or covered in sawtoothed crosshatching. The resulting diamond pattern from hatching creates the effect of puffed feathers, the unevenness of the cuts hinting at the motion of muscles below. The spread wings were dovetailed into the body and covered with detailed feathering cuts. The figures were then gessoed and painted. Observing the eagles from different angles, their eyes stay trained upon you, just like those of real eagles, whose range is 300 degrees. In spite of their fierce demeanor, Schimmel’s eagles meet your

primary source material,” furthered Pass. “This is evident in the story his ‘fogels’ (eagles) lined the shelves behind local bars. Until a period photo or reliable newspaper account surfaces, this is just a tale. Same goes for Flower’s story of Schimmel becoming irate for not winning a prize at the county fair. I found on microfilm an 1883 account of Schimmel actually receiving an award of honorable mention in the ‘bric-abrac’ category at that year’s fair. Wouldn’t it be great to see a photo of that display!” stated Pass.

The upcoming Americana and International Sale on Sept. 30 and Oct. 1 at Pook & Pook features seven works attributed to Cumberland County, Pa., folk artist Wilhelm Schimmel (18171890). To collectors of American folk art, this will not come as a surprise. Pook & Pook has sold many Schimmel carvings over the years. Karl Pass, former curator at the Cumberland County Historical Society, current editor of Antiques & Auction News, completed his Master’s Thesis on the subject of

roughly 21 years (1869-1890) there were never longtime periods, given period newspaper reports/arrest reports, he gravitated far from the town of Carlisle. It is not difficult to estimate his output at 1,000 to 1,500 carvings, of which around 500 attributed pieces exist today,” said Pass. Based on those figures, Pook & Pook has sold roughly 15 percent of all Schimmel’s attributed works. Of the nearly 100 Schimmel eagle carvings that survive, about 40 percent have crossed the auction block at Pook & Pook since the 1980s.

Collector Chats with Peter S. Seibert

THE

SLATINGTON MARKETPLACE

This Week: Out And About

I always love to chat with dealers about the future of the market. In many cases, they know who is buying from them and what is hot and what is not. I’ve had two really interesting conversations in the last month that give me great hope, both for the future of antiques and the entrepreneurial spirit of the trade. The first was with a dealer in Adamstown who sets up booths in several malls, selling a wide range of ceramics and glass at a set flat price. When I first discovered the booths, I was impressed that it was not all late-20th-century florist vases but rather there was a smattering of early 19thcentury ceramics along with some highly collectible items.

priorities rather than the end of it all. In talking with the owner, she noted that more and more 30-somethings were coming in and buying. No, they were not buying truckloads of furniture, but rather they were being judicious and smart in their purchases. So, kudos to a quality co-op where they know their audience and are ensuring that present and future collectors have a place to find great stuff.

“Born to collect” should be the motto of Peter Seibert’s family. Raised in Central Pennsylvania, Seibert has been collecting and writing about antiques for more than three decades. By day, he is a museum director and has worked in Pennsylvania, Wyoming, Virginia and New Mexico. In addition, he advises and consults with auction houses throughout the MidAtlantic region, particularly about American furniture and decorative arts. Seibert’s writings include books on photography, American fraternal societies and paintings. He and his family are restoring a 1905 arts and crafts house filled with years’ worth antique treasures found in shops, co-ops and at auctions.

When my oldest daughter was outfitting her first apartment, that same booth helped her get the tea cups for her morning tea. Items were priced to sell, we bought a lot, and I witnessed others buying as well. Recently I ran into the dealer and commented to him that I was impressed by the quality of the items that he was selling at reasonable prices. He told me that he does household cleanouts and was tired of selling things to others or via auction in lots at pennies on the dollar so he opted to set up booths with flat pricing and really move things along. His approach was brilliant, and his booth is one that I always hit, not only because I am looking to fill out some mismatched sets of my own in cups and saucers but because I love to give old china plates with cookies at the holidays. So, bravo for some entrepreneurial thinking. The second individual ran a co-op with her business partner in southern New Jersey. When we first went in, I was impressed with both the high quality of items for sale and the pricing that reflected the modern realities of the trade. We got to talking about how the business has changed, and she was telling me some

fascinating news. She had been selling items to millennials. When I asked what they were buying, she said they were pushing their pocketbooks and buying quality furniture. You could have picked my jaw up off the floor in sheer pleasure. Up until that point, I have been reeling from the wave of anti-antique venom that seems to be coming from the popular press. Recent articles in national newspapers loudly proclaim the death of antiques collecting. Millennials only want experiences, and Gen Z doesnt care about things. This has been the gist of essays and articles in the popular press. Of course, when you read the articles, what you find they are talking about are low-end, mass-produced, “limited-edition” collectible items, but the moniker that antiques are dead seems to stick. I hate such reports in-sofar as they seem to drive people out of the market rather than accurately reporting the realities of it all. So I was thrilled when this co-op owner talked about expensive farm tables being sold. This seems to correlate with my experience, which has been that the so-called demise of the trade is really about a shift in collecting

recognition, about 30 years following his death. Schimmel’s carvings were sought by early collectors like Abby Aldrich Rockefeller, Henry Francis DuPont, and Elie Nadelman. According to Pass, dealers acquired Schimmels through canvassing the valley as early as the ’20s and ’30s and buying carvings from mostly second and third generation original owners. These were in and around such places as Plainfield, Huntsdale, Newville, and Newburg. In 1965, Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Folk Art Museum at Colonial Williamsburg held the first major exhibition of Schimmel’s work. Since then, noteably around the Bicentennial in 1976, recognition of Schimmel’s work has grown, and the value of his pieces, eagles in particular, ha soared. His ethereal 1902 series of four decorative panels, “The Stars,” was the auction’s top lot, at $120,000 (est. $60,000$70,000). His first-ever poster, “Gismonda / Théâtre de la Renaissance,” from 1894, beat all previous results, selling for $50,400 (est. $20,000-$25,000). And his luminous “Cycles

All prices quoted include a buyer’s premium. Another master of the Art Nouveau era, ToulouseLautrec’s works sold reliably well. His top sale was for the 1892 limited-edition print, “La Goulue et sa Sœur,” which sold for $78,000. His serpentine 1899 “Jane Avril” brought $72,000; the 1892 “Reine de Joie” was won for $66,000; his 1896 “The Ault & Wiborg Co. / Au Concert” went for $60,000. Other gems of the Art Nouveau era delighted collectors. Ferdinand Lunel’s celestial “Rouxel & Dubois” bicycle poster, from ca. 1894, was sold for $6,600. The never-beforeseen, ca. 1900, “Terrot / Bicyclettes de Tourisme,” by Francisco Tamagno, was swept up for $2,880. A rare, ca. 1898, circus billboard by Pal, “Lord John Sanger / Troupeau d’Éléphants,” surpassed its estimate of $7,000-$9,000 to bring $12,000. For Théophile-Alexandre Steinlen, two of his most famous designs continued to make poster lovers swoon. His 1896 “Chat Noir / Prochainement” sold for $26,400; his charming 1894 “Lait pur Stérilisé” warmed collectors’ hearts, bringing $18,000. There were also several notable wins for works from the Art Deco period. Roger Broders’ wanderlust-inducing travel designs were highly desired. His ca. 1930

Poster Auctions International’s (PAI) second sale of the year, held July 20, finished at $1.9 million in sales. Rare Posters Auction LXXXIV demonstrated a continued passion for the masters of the poster, namely, Alphonse Mucha. “This auction, collectors proved the enduring charm of Art Nouveau masters, and particularly that of Alphonse Mucha, whose Belle Époque works have a timeless appeal for seasoned and new collectors alike. There’s no question that Mucha was the star of this sale. But the strength of Art Nouveau works did not diminish the enthusiasm for Art Deco designs, as witnessed by our strong sales of works by Broders, Cassandre, and Loupot. As always, early designs for the circus continue to excite poster lovers, as evidenced by Pal’s billboard for Lord John Sanger,” said Jack Rennert, president of PAI. Indeed, collectors clamored for works from the

Two original maquettes sold favorably: his “Picon Chaud” was won for $10,800, and his “Vin de France” sold for $19,200. Notable Jazz Age sales include Jean-Gabriel Domergue’s 1937 “L’Hiver à Monte-Carlo,” which sold for $11,400. Charles Loupot’s iconic 1938 “St. Raphaël” was secured for $43,200, and an original 1929 maquette for the paint brand “Valentin” earned a winning bid of $21,600. René Vincent’s romantic, ca. 1925, “La Voisin” sold for $4,320; Arthur C. Michael’s stately 1935 “Harrogate” was swept up for $11,400; and Fritz C. Rumpf’s ca. 1914 “Söhnlein Rheingold” realized $5,280.

The Smithsonian American Art Museum, with 40 daguerreotypes in its collection by these photographers, plus selected portraits made using later processes, is the only museum to own such extensive holdings from these early African American studios. It is important to note that daguerreotypes and other cased photographs from the period are unique objects, so a collection like West’s cannot be assembled again. “When it came time to place the three collections that I have nurtured all these 45 years, the Smithsonian American Art Museum was the obvious best choice with its reputation for fostering research and new scholarship and the plans presented by its curators to feature objects from these collections, in conversation with paintings and sculpture from the same time period, in the public galleries,” said West. “For collectorresearchers like myself, this use of the objects and research findings is critical. This work by an unidentified artist, “Untitled” (brooch, man with goatee), undated, is an albumen print in metal setting from the Smithsonian American Art Museum, the L. J. West Collection of Photographic Jewelry, and was a museum purchase made possible through the Franz H. and Luisita L. Denghausen Endowment.

The Smithsonian American Art Museum has acquired a collection of objects related to early American photography from the collector Larry J. West that transforms the museum’s photography holdings. The L.J. West Collection includes 286 objects from the 1840s to about 1925 in three groupings: works by early African American daguerreotypists James P. Ball, Glenalvin Goodridge and Augustus Washington; early photographs of diverse portrait subjects and objects related to abolitionists, the Underground Railroad and the role of women entrepreneurs in it; and photographic jewelry that represents the bridge between miniature painting and early cased photography such as daguerreotypes, ambrotypes and tintypes. With this purchase, the museum now holds the largest collection of daguerreotypes by the three early African American photographers Ball, Goodridge and Washington and establishes itself as a center for research and new scholarship in this field. “We are grateful to visionary collectors like Larry West who choose the Smithsonian as the permanent caretakers of their beloved collections, where they join other national treasures held in trust for the public benefit,” said Lonnie Bunch, secretary of the Smithsonian. “As a historian, I especially value Larry’s persistent pursuit of artworks and material culture that serve to illuminate an important time in the history of this nation and will help future historians and visitors to the Smithsonian understand the early American experience in a more inclusive manner.” “The extraordinary works collected by Larry West will bring visitors and scholars alike to the Smithsonian American Art Museum as the holder of the preeminent collection of work by the early African American studio photographers James P. Ball, Glenalvin Goodridge and Augustus Washington,” said Stephanie Stebich, the Margaret and Terry Stent director. “The talented curators and educators here at SAAM will share the many layered stories these captivating photographic images reveal in a dedicated permanent collection gallery.” West is a collector and historian of 19th-century photography, who has been gathering this material for more than 45 years. He bought his first daguerreotype in 1975, one depicting an African American man in a tuxedo. He offered his collection to the museum in recognition of its longstanding commitment to collecting and caring for works by Black artists. To put the exceptional nature of this collection in context, approximately 166 daguerreotypes by Ball, Goodridge and Washington are known to have survived to the present, though others currently unknown may be held privately by families or collectors. Of the known works, the Library of Congress holds 26 (including 16 made by
