Commemorative revolvers ($1,200). Asked about what struck him most about the sale, Chilton said, “Military firearms continue to be the hot sellers at these auctions.” Bearing that out, a deactivated Bren MKII light machine gun sold for $1,700, the top price in that category. The Bren had a reputation as a hardy and reliable weapon and was used in the British armed forces until fairly recently. A Mauser

Antiques & Auction News — September 14, 2018 - - 3
Without a seller, there can never be a buyer. This simple sentence was my first introduction into the world of economics back in junior high. By the time I was in college, the lessons I would learn in economics helped pave the way for me to become a better collector. And, in my humble opinion, it is these lessons that appear to be lost on a lot of today’s collectors. I am always cautious when I encounter a collector who proudly declares, “I will never sell any part of my collection. It is this type of collector who is either naive or driven solely by emotion. Logic is usually not something this kind of collector is in tune with. The only constant in the antiques and collectibles trade is change. Markets change. Desirability changes. Prices change. Usually the type of collector who refuses to sell anything in his and her collection also erroneously believes that prices only go up. Sadly, everyone knows this isn’t the case. If you are in the midst of building a collection or
already have built up a collection of like items and the price has risen, rejoice. Just don’t think the trend is likely to continue indefinitely. Enjoy the process and, most of all, the stuff! That said, there are those kinds of collectibles that do end up going up in value over the long-term and end up holding their value as well. The 1952 Topps Mickey Mantle rookie card is one such example, as is a copy of Amazing Fantasy #15 that featured the first appearance of SpiderMan. However, these items were never coveted at their time of release, and few remain today, making them quite valuable on the secondary market. Had Mickey Mantle not become an infamous and beloved baseball player and Spider-Man not become a pop culture icon, neither of these items would have any significant value today. For every Mickey Mantle rookie card and copy of Amazing Fantasy #15 that moves across the auction block, there are thousands upon thousands of other items that were also thought to be the next great collectible that go unsold or sell for very little. Collectors’ tastes are
Back To School At The Grist Mill Antiques Center Parents around the country are breathing a collective sigh of relief as the smell of newly sharpened pencils and the stacks of school supplies accompany their children back into the classroom for another year. However, it also brings a sense of nostalgia and remembrance of school days gone by. Who can forget the anticipation of walking into a new classroom for the first time, seeing old friends and making new ones, and thinking about the school activities and clubs to join? All those memories are housed in the September special sales display at Grist Mill Antiques Center at 127 Hanover St., in Pemberton, N.J. Vintage schoolbooks, chalkboards, maps, inkwells, microscopes, rulers, pens and pencils, globes, desks, typewriters, yearbooks, school bells and
lunch boxes adorn the showcase as school days of years gone by are fondly remembered. The Grist Mill’s semiannual flea market is just around the corner. On Sunday, Oct. 21, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., dealers from both the Grist Mill and Haddon Heights Antiques Center will be participating. For more information, contact Barbara Lind at 609-726-1588 or theplace@ gristmillantiques.com. Limited vendor spaces are still available. There is always something happening at the Grist Mill. On the last Wednesday of each month, stop by to participate in their monthly scavenger hunt. Lists are
stayed with me, and I vowed to never be a collector who refuses to sell. One of the best things a smart collector can to do in his pursuit of adding to his collections is to also add to his knowledge. The fact that you are reading this publication is a step in the right direction, as knowledge is power. A smart collector should always be observing changing trends in the marketplace while assessing his own needs and interests as well. It is very possible to lose interest in a collection. When I sold off a portion of my vintage comic book collection in 2015, two concerns were at the top of my mind. The first was what if I miss the collection to the point where I decide to repurchase a lot of the books I just agreed to let go of? The second concern was what if prices rise exponentially higher than they are today? Looking back at the decision, I am pleased to announce that I had no desire to repurchase any of the books I sold, although I miss my copy of House of Secrets #92 in CGC 9.4 condition dearly. It featured the first appearance of the Swamp Thing, who was one of my favorite comic book characters of all time (aside from Batman), mainly due to the gothic love story that surrounds the character’s origin. As someone who is a fan of both classic literature and horror, Swamp Thing will always have a place in my heart. However, I never did purchase another copy of that book, and it should be noted

fickle, and what they choose to collect and value can and does change, and it can do so on a whim. Many, many years ago I witnessed a now memorable exchange on a coin collecting forum. The forum was populated by a lot of well-established numismatists in the hobby. A lot of these wellknown collectors held coin and currency collections valued in the low to high six-figure range. There was one discussion topic that I remember reading that I will never forget. The discussion took place between an entry-level collector and two highly experienced and well-known numismatists still active in the hobby today. The novice was asking one of the collectors for advice on what to buy in the then coin collecting market, and the first astute and knowledgeable collector gave his opinion. Just then, the second experienced collector chimed in, “How can you recommend this novice buys what you recommend? You never sell anything or know anything about the current marketplace. And if you don’t know both aspects of buying and selling, then your advice is flawed at best or naive at worst. As an onlooker to this exchange, this advice always

anything is a lesson that serves us well. It is this lesson that I have found to be one of the most challenging to master in life. If you are a collector, consider yourself blessed to be able to master this before having to apply it to other aspects of your life. that prices rose significantly on most of the books I sold. That said, they could have just as easily fell. I sincerely believe that the vintage comic book market is due for a severe correction. I do, however, believe that we are still a few years away from that happening. I also used the funds from the sale of that collection to invest in other areas of the collectibles trade, as well as the stock market. As a result, the rising short-term prices of the books I sold bring a smile to my face when I think about the fellow collectors who were able to purchase them as they went across the auction block. In conclusion, true collectors should weary of becoming hoarders. The ability to let go of something, someone, or

Generous support for “Object Lessons” was provided by Art Bridges, a nonprofit started in 2017 by Alice Walton to share outstanding works of American Art with those that have limited access to the country’s most meaningful works. Art Bridges partners with art institutions of all sizes on projects that deeply engage their surrounding communities. The exhibition will run

Palmer Museum Announces Fall Exhibition “Object Lessons: American Still-Life Painting in the Nineteenth Century” is on view in the first-floor special exhibitions gallery at the Palmer Museum of Art at Penn State in State College, Pa. The show highlights the rich tradition of still-life painting in the United States, with an emphasis on Pennsylvania’s influential role in that history. The 22 works featured in “Object Lessons” explore a variety of themes— from the brevity of life, to the bounty of the continent, to the poetic power and meaning of the commonplace. Rarely seen loans from private collectors complement the holdings of the Palmer to explore how flowers, fruit, and simple household items have transfixed and beguiled viewers from the 19th century to the present day. “The Palmer is committed to presenting exhibitions that explore different periods and styles in American art,” said Erin Coe, director of the Palmer Museum of Art. “This exhibition places masterworks from the collection in dialogue with loans from private hands to better understand the development and cultural significance of stilllife painting in the 19th century, when the genre was at its height of popularity.” Pennsylvania artists were at the forefront of the still-life genre, and the exhibition features works by a number of painters local to or identified with the commonwealth, notably William Michael Harnett, Albert F. King, Rubens

Magnificent Hopewell Culture Cache Of Prehistoric Artifacts Sells For $162,000
Year-Round
Cowan’s Brings Part One Of Art Gerber Collection To Marketplace One of the most significant assemblages of Hopewell Culture prehistoric art ever collected more than doubled its high estimate, selling for $162,000 at Cowan’s Auctions during part one of the “Collection of Art Gerber: Ancient Art of the Eastern Woodlands.” The cache was one of 382 lots offered in the July 28 auction from the estate of famed collector Art Gerber. Gerber was a giant in the prehistoric artifact world, and collectors from across the region travelled to Cincinnati, Ohio, to get a glimpse at a portion of the legendary collection and vie for the chance to take home a piece of history. They competed with equally motivated collectors bidding over the phone and online, sparking numerous bidding wars that pushed the auction above its high estimate. “Art would have loved today,” said Danica Farnand, Cowan’s director of American Indian and Prehistoric Art. “Yes, he would have been pleased with the hammer prices, but I think what he would have really loved was seeing all these collectors marveling at his life’s work and sharing stories about him. The whole day was really a celebration of his life.” “The Collection of Art Gerber” is a tangible 8,000year historical record of human life along the Ohio
A very thin and magnificent 11-inch Hopewell Ross blade made from Mill Creek chert was among the highlights of the Hopewell cache, which included 19 items total. The lot sold for $162,000.
River. Gerber’s entire life is inextricably linked to the Mighty Ohio. From his birth in Evansville, Ind., to his childhood home in Cannelton, Ind., to his professional career in Tell City, Ind., Gerber spent his entire life hunting the Ohio River Valley for his next great discovery. The Hopewell Culture cache was Gerber’s crowned jewel. Discovered very near the Ohio River directly across from the city of Owensboro, Ky., it is arguably one of the most significant and finest Hopewell assemblages ever This rare copper Hopewell bowl sold found in the state of Indiana. for $3,819. The cache features 19 items
highlighted by a magnificent 11-inch Hopewell Ross blade from Mill Creek chert. Blades of this size are unusual for the region, and none have been found in such remarkable condition. “There’s no question that what initially draws collectors’ attention is this incredible blade,” said Farnand. “But all 19 pieces were found together and have remained together since the moment of their discovery. You just don’t see that in the prehistoric artifact world, which is why we saw that bidding war today.” Six bidders, four over the phone, one on the floor, and one on online bidding platform Bidsquare, battled for the cache for over 10 minutes. Opening at $20,000, bidding was fast and furious for several minutes as the lot quickly reached its low estimate of $50,000. From there, bidders began to drop out one by one until only a phone bidder and the Bidsquare bidder remained at the high estimate of $80,000. The bids flew back and forth in $2,500 increments from there for over five minutes before one bidder emerged victorious with a $135,000 bid. The addition of the 20 percent buyer’s premium pushed the total sale price to $162,000. A rare steatite effigy boatstone, likely depicting a raptor with its wings folded against its body, was the second highest price of the day, selling for $8,225. Effigy banner stones are a rare form in Hopewell Culture, a fact that clearly didn’t escape collectors as bidding sent the stone well past its high estimate of $3,000. Of the multitude of forms offered during the sale, bannerstones were in the highest demand. An expanded center bottle bannerstone with associated antler atlatl hook was the top lot of the category,

The Charterhouse Of Bruges: Jan Van Eyck, Petrus Christus, And Jan Vos Frick Exhibition Reunites Stunning Pair Of Commissions within the confines of their cells. These ascetic ideals belied a complex attitude toward ornament and images. While specific images were cited as distracting luxuries in the order’s regulations, others were valued as important tools for meditation, and the Carthusians’ monasteries, known as charterhouses, became rich repositories of painted panels, illuminated manuscripts, funerary monuments, altarpieces, and other fine works of art. In April 1441, the Carthusian monk Jan Vos was elected prior of the Charterhouse of Genadedal, an important monastery near Bruges that was patronized by the Dukes of Burgundy and the city’s foremost patrician families. Soon after his arrival in Bruges, Vos commissioned “The Virgin and Child with St. Barbara, St. Elizabeth, and Jan Vos” from Jan van Eyck, who laid out the painting’s composition. Following the artist’s death in June 1441, the panel was completed by an unknown member of his workshop. Several years later, Vos commissioned the closely related “Virgin and Child with St. Barbara and Jan Vos” from Petrus Christus. It was not uncommon for preeminent Netherlandish masters to paint important works for Carthusian monasteries, most famously Rogier van der Weyden, who, around 1455–64, gifted his monumental “Crucifixion” (now in the

collection of El Escorial, Real Monasterio de San Lorenzo, Madrid) to the charterhouse of Scheut near Brussels, and another panel (possibly depicting the Virgin, now lost) to the charterhouse of Herne, where his son was a monk. Genadedal boasted impressive works of art as well. In addition to the Van Eyck Virgin and the Petrus Christus panel, a small choir book from Genadedal is included in the exhibition. One of the only surviving illustrated manuscripts from the charterhouse, its decoration is worn from generations of monks touching and kissing the holy figures depicted within it. Another outstanding work in the exhibition is associated with Genadedal, Petrus Christus’s “Portrait of a Carthusian Lay Brother.” Painted in 1446, it probably depicts one of the charterhouse’s members and is thought to be the earliest surviving portrait of a cleric not depicted in the act of praying. Additional links of patronage tied the charterhouse to Van Eyck and Petrus Christus, for instance, the wealthy merchant Pieter II Adornes, who joined Genadedal in 1454 following the death of his wife, had previously been portrayed by Petrus Christus and had probably commissioned two panels of “The Stigmatization of St. Francis” from Van Eyck (identified Jan van Eyck and Workshop painted “The Virgin and Child with St. Barbara, St. today as work in the Galleria Elizabeth, and Jan Vos,” a ca. 1441-43 oil-on-panel, 18 5/8-by-24 1/8 inches, Sabauda in Turin and the from the the Frick Collection, New York, photo by Michael Bodycomb. have offered endless possibilities for examination, helping to relieve the mental strain of complete isolation. The function of the Frick Virgin is more difficult to ascertain. Previous studies have identified it as either a devotional work or an altarpiece. A recent examination of the archives of the Utrecht charterhouse, where Vos took the panel after leaving Bruges in 1450, provides compelling evidence that it had served as his memorial, a type of funerary monument popular in northern Europe during the late 14th and 15th centuries. Broadly defined, memorials (also called votive tablets or epitaphs) were large painted or sculpted tablets, which depicted a deceased donor being introduced by saints to holy figures, in most cases the Virgin and Child, whose intercession they sought. Generally, memorials would be placed above the tomb of the deceased, thus functioning as grave markers. Their frames usually bore an inscription that identified the deceased and petitioned passers-by to pray for the repose of the deceased’s soul. Indeed, during the 15th century, prayers from the living were believed to hasten the release of the deceased’s soul from purgatory into heaven, and memorials were created specifically in order to secure suffrages for the dead. This was not the first time

About the Paintings: Devotion and Commemoration Though different in scale, the Frick and Exeter Virgins bear remarkably similar imagery, composition, and fine execution. Both scenes depict Vos being introduced to the “Virgin and Child by Saint Barbara,” and are set with in elaborate porticos opening on a panoramic cityscape; the panels achieve remarkable monumentality while conveying myriad minute details. Kneeling on holy ground removed from the city below, Vos exemplifies the Carthusian ideal of isolation from the world. The prior’s choice of patron saints has been connected to his earlier career as a Teutonic Knight, a military religious order that looked after the relics of Elizabeth of Hungary, a noblewoman who
Petrus Christus’s “The Virgin and Child with St. Barbara and Jan Vos” (known as the “Exeter Virgin”) is a ca. 1450 oil-on-panel, measuring just 7 5/8-by5.5 inches, from the Staatliche Museen zuBerlin, Gemaldegalerie.

For the first time in 24 years and only the second time in their history, two masterpieces of early Netherlandish painting commissioned by the Carthusian monk Jan Vos will be reunited in a special exhibition at the Frick Collection, New York, N.Y. These works, the Frick’s “Virgin and Child with St. Barbara, St. Elizabeth, and Jan Vos,” commissioned from Jan van Eyck and completed by his workshop, and “The Virgin and Child with St. Barbara and Jan Vos” (known as the Exeter Virgin, after its first recorded owner), painted by Petrus Christus and now in the Gemäldegalerie, Berlin, will be shown with a selection of objects that place them in the rich monastic context for which they were created. The exhibition pays tribute to Vos as a patron and offers insight into the role such images played in shaping monastic life in 15th-century Bruges. “The Charterhouse of Bruges: Jan van Eyck, Petrus Christus, and Jan Vos” will be on view in the museum’s Cabinet Gallery and is organized by Emma Capron, the Frick’s 2016-18 Anne L. Poulet curatorial fellow. Carthusian Patronage In Renaissance Bruges The Carthusians belonged to one of the most austere monastic orders of the late Middle Ages, removed entirely from the secular world and committed to a life of solitude and silence spent mostly
renounced worldly goods to devote herself to the poor and who is depicted as a nun in the Frick panel. Saint Barbara is shown in both the Frick and Exeter panels with her attribute, the tower where her father imprisoned her to prevent (unsuccessfully) her conversion to Christianity. Barbara was the patron saint of artillerymen and, as such, was especially revered by the Teutonic Knights. The story of her confinement in the tower must have also resonated with the reclusive Carthusians: during the late Middle Ages, charterhouses often were compared to prisons. “The Virgin” features as central object of veneration in both the Frick and Exeter panels, as she does in adiptych and clay tablet (both lost) that Vos is known to have owned. This reflects not only the ubiquity of the Virgin’s cult during the late Middle Ages, but also her importance as patron of the Carthusian order. Because of its diminutive size (7 5/8-by-5.5 inches), it is probable that the “Exeter Virgin” served a devotional purpose. As the 14th-century Carthusian writer Guillaume d’Ivrée recounted, such images were frequently found in monks’ cells, where they were meant to “excite devotion and imagination, and augment devotional ideas.” This is consistent with meditative practices of the period, which relied on physical images to help conjure mental ones. Images provided the crucial first step for this spiritual progress, they helped focus the monks’ minds and allowed them to visualize themselves in the presence of holy beings. Looking at his own likeness in the company of the Virgin, Christ, and Saint Barbara would have helped Vos visualize this divine encounter in his mind’s eye. This reliance on mental images and visualization is not so different from exercises promoted by mindfulness meditation today. Images were all the more important for an order whose members spent the majority of their time in their cells, in solitary prayer: images, especially ones as rich in detail as the Frick and Exeter Virgins, would

The price realized by “Escape on Venus” was the third-highest ever through Heritage Auctions for a Frazetta painting. “Death Dealer 6” painting original art (1990) brought a record $1,792,500 in May 2018, and Frank Frazetta “At The Earth’s Core” paperback cover painting original art (1974) sold for $1,075,500 in August 2016. Sewn And Hooked Rugs To Take Center Stage In “Folk Art Underfoot” As New Research Is Revealed Exhibit At The Art Museums Of Colonial Williamsburg Opens Sept. 15 immigrants. Among the exhibition’s highlights is a bias-shirred hearth rug, made of wool on cotton in New England (probably Maine), ca. 1830. This style of rug is created in an appliqué technique using fabric strips cut on a bias (a 45degree angle to the fabric’s warp and weft) and stitched lengthwise down the center of the strip to a ground fabric with thread. The strips are closely sewn, side by side, with the edges folded up to create the pile, creating a wavy look in the design. Dating from 1820 to 1840, bias shirring is the earliest and most challenging of the shirring techniques. This example’s elongated shape and one-way design suggests that it was intended as a hearth rug to ornament a fireplace not in use during the summer months. Because of its large size (32.25 inches high by 68.50 inches wide), the rug was worked in sections and then attached to the cotton foundation. Another excellent example of a sewn rug is a wool-on-cotton, bundled-shirred furniture

Spanning more than a century of rug making, the craft of creating non-woven rugs will be in the spotlight at the Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Folk Art Museum, one of the Art Museums of Colonial Williamsburg, when “Folk Art Underfoot: American Hooked Rugs,” an exhibition of 14 exquisite examples of sewn and hooked rugs, opens Saturday, Sept. 15. The rugs, some of which have never before been on public view, are on loan from the collection of Joseph and Linda Caputo of Maine, along with visual documentation and a video that shows the rug hooking technique. These simple objects that express the unique artistry of their makers and were created for both use and enjoyment are considered in the best tradition of American folk art. “This work of 19th-century artisans, most of them nameless to us today, cannot be overlooked,” said Mitchell B. Reiss, president and CEO of the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation. “Their creativity is woven through our American fabric, and we are proud to be able to share with our visitors these unique rugs as another way to explore our shared history.” Originally created by rural housewives for use as floor coverings, hooked rugs also provided color, pattern and warmth to country homes. Rug making gave housewives with no academic art training a way to create an everyday household object with decorative interest and beauty. Sewn rugs grew out of an earlier needlework tradition, which included sampler making and crewel wool embroidery. Sewn rugs include yarn sewn and shirred. Rug hooking techniques originated in Maine and grew from their 19th-century origins to a national activity. Not only are the rugs in “Folk Art Underfoot” exceptional examples of their craft, they have also helped to reveal new findings through research conducted in Colonial Williamsburg’s stateof-the-art textile laboratory about the materials on which the rugs were made. Traditionally, it was believed that early sewn and hooked rugs were worked on ground fabrics of linen with wool yarn or fabric strip piles. Microscopic analysis in the lab revealed, however, that most of the grounds in the early rugs in this exhibition are cotton, not linen. Some of the piles were created with cotton fabric strips in addition to wool. In addition to learning about the materials used to create a rug, visitors to “Folk Art Underfoot” can see examples of yarn-sewn, shirred and bias-shirred, and bundled or patch-shirred sewn rugs; signed and dated examples of hooked rugs; rugs with design motifs that echo those found in other home furnishings; rugs made from patterns; as well as a section focused on the distinct style of hooked rugs that originated in Waldoboro, Maine, a ship-building community originally settled by German

that Van Eyck was commissioned to paint a memorial: his monumental “Virgin and Child with the Canon Joris van der Paele” (ca. 1434–36) originally hung in Bruges’ Church of Saint-Donatian, above Van der Paele’s grave. (It is now in the Groeningemuseum in Bruges). Another memorial by the artist, “The Virgin and Child with Nicolas van Maelbeke,” was completed probably around the time Vos arrived in Bruges. Although lost, the panel is known through two silverpoint drawings from about 1445 (now in the Germanisches Nationalmuseum in Nuremberg and the Albertina, Vienna). The latter, attributed to Petrus Christus, is featured in the exhibition. This composition inspired the Exeter Virgin and shows the impact of Van Eyck’s legacy on the younger painter. When Vos began his tenure as prior of Genadedal, he was probably in his 50s, at an age when one usually started planning for death. By then Van Eyck had completed his memorials for Van der Paele and Van Maelbeke, which may have been known by Vos, perhaps prompting him to commission the artist to produce a similar (though more modest) in size memorial for himself. In 1443, about two years after the completion of the Frick Virgin, Vos petitioned his acquaintance, Bishop Martin de Blija, to attach to the memorial an indulgence, that is, a grant that promised passers-by a remission of time served in purgatory in exchange for their prayers.

panel into a currency in the economy of salvation that pervaded the era. The Frick and Exeter Virgins survived the destruction of the Bruges and Utrecht charterhouses during the religious wars, in 1578 and 1580, respectively. While Vos’s body lies anonymously somewhere beneath the residential buildings that now stand on the site of the Utrecht charterhouse, where he died in 1462, his memorial hangs on the walls of the Frick Collection. Venerated today for its artistic qualities rather than as an object that helped one secure salvation, Vos’s memorial has fulfilled its function, though perhaps not in the way that he had anticipated: it has kept alive the memory of this Carthusian monk, whose patronage of Van Eyck and Petrus Christus gave us two masterworks of early Netherlandish painting. Frick Exhibition
Specifically, the indulgence guaranteed 40 days of pardon to whoever would greet the Virgin in the Frick panel with the Ave Maria, the first line of which, significantly, appears embroidered on the canopy behind the Virgin, suggesting that Vos planned from the onset of the commission to seek an indulgence for the panel. The painting’s imagery thus invited viewers to recite the indulgenced prayer. The indulgence could also be gained by saluting the panel’s images of Saint Barbara or Saint Elizabeth by reciting both the Ave Maria and the Pater Noster. Forty-day indulgences were by no means uncommon during the late Middle Ages, and they were frequently granted to encourage prayers in front of newly made images. As a spiritual privilege granted to the Carthusians, the indulgence was only valid as long as the image remained within the order. Thus, on the walls of the Frick Collection, the Virgin has lost its supposed power of spiritual remission. What prompted Vos to seek an indulgence for his memorial? Effectively, the indulgence made the painting’s beholder a mutually beneficial offer: in addition to benefitting Vos’s soul, the recitation of special prayers in front of the panel would also improve the viewer’s prospects for salvation through the remission offered by the indulgence. Vos thus used the indulgence to call attention to his memorial and incentivize suffrages for his soul among his fellow monks. In procuring the indulgence, Vos transformed the

Three Lifetime Collections Of Antique Toys Form Cornerstone Of Bertoia’s Sept. 22 Signature Sale Antique toy collectors know that every Bertoia auction is planned with quality, rarity and authenticity as its foundation, whether it’s a premium-level Signature Sale or a boutiquestyle online-only Bertoia Basics event. Bertoia’s sales often bring together outstanding, handpicked consignments
from multiple collections, creating buying opportunities across many subcategories. But every so often, the familyowned New Jersey auction house is privileged to offer the toy community the crème de la crème of only a few esteemed collections in one big day of buying and selling. That will be the case on Saturday, Sept. 22, when Bertoia’s presents a Fall Signature Sale showcasing Benjamin Michel’s Marklin trains and stations, Douglas Jackman’s still banks, and Frank Mohr’s Martin and early American clockwork toys and automata. “We are so excited about this sale,” said Bertoia Auctions’ owner Jeanne Bertoia. “Just reading over the catalog descriptions and seeing the consistently superior quality throughout tells us this will be one of those auction milestones that collectors will remember and talk about for years to come.” The 60-year Frank Mohr

into early American tin and bell toys, Mohr employed the same successful mantra he had used in building his other specialty collections: buy the best and leave the rest. Among the jewels in his collection are several rare Jerome Secor AfricanAmerican musician automata, a George Brown clockwork hoop toy with boy figure (ex. Manufactured around 1893, the Cutter Sleigh is considered by many experts to be the finest American toy ever produced. Mohr’s nearmint example boasts an enviable provenance that includes the Max Berry collection, the Covert and Gertrude Hegarty collection, and Philadelphia’s Perelman Antique Toy Museum. A respected New England dealer who co-owns Stephen/Douglas Antiques in Rockingham, Vt., Jackman vigilantly scoured high-end Americana and general antiques shows for rare banks throughout his 40-year collecting odyssey. His dedication and skill at networking with other dealers, who often set aside still-bank discoveries specifically for him, resulted in a collection that numbers 1,295 banks, many of them quite rare. The list of highlights in the Jackman collection is long and
impressive. Its contents include a Detroit Street Savings bank believed to be a sole survivor, an Alphabet bank, and one of few known Bunker Hill banks. Both his General Butler and Peters Weatherbird banks exhibit fantastic original paint. Additionally, there are rare examples of a Billy Possum, Canadian Beaver, and one of only two or three known Beehive banks in the yellowpaint variation. “Douglas Jackman approached bank collecting differently. He kept looking until he eventually found it.” The third major collection in Bertoia’s Sept. 22 auction comes from Benjamin Michel. His specialty is Marklin trains and European train stations. A retired New Jersey trial attorney, Michel is of French heritage and has made numerous trips to France to purchase fine French paintings, antique toy soldiers and other antiques. Hints: Although there were a total of six members of this team over the years, only three ever appeared at the same time. They debuted as a Vaudeville act, and between the late 1920s through the 1960s appeared in 220 movies, 190 of which were considered shorts. And they’re credited with inventing the term “knucklehead.” If you said “The Three Stooges,” you would be correct. Although most people’s favorite “Stooges” were Moe Howard, Larry Fine, and Curly Howard, over the years Shemp Howard, Joe Besser, and Curly Joe Derita all replaced Curly Howard at some point. “The Three Stooges” are still popular today, and their movies appear on cable TV with regularity. There is a “www.ThreeStooges.com” website, a “Three Stooges Fan Club,” and as recently as 2016, there was a “Three Stooges” convention held in Philadelphia. Even I must admit they still make me laugh, nearly 100 years after their act debuted. What’s it worth? Recently there were nearly 20,000 “Three Stooges” items for sale on eBay, including photographs, DVDs, collector cards, autographs, posters, clothing, and more. Several rarer “Three Stooges” collector cards were professionally graded and sold for more than $2,000, although most items were selling for less than $50.
