Graham Nash Collection Of Underground Art Tops $6.3 Million Comics Event Work By Robert Crumb Leads Sale Singer/songwriter Graham Nash’s collection of Underground Comix art realized more than $1.1 million to lead Heritage Auctions’ summer Vintage Comics and Comic Art Auction in Dallas, Texas, on Aug. 10, 11, and 12. The $6.3 million auction presented freshto-market art and key books to more than 2,800 bidders in person and via www.HALive. “The market for original comic art continues to show its strength – especially for works by Robert Crumb,” said Ed Jaster, senior vice president of Heritage Auctions. “This is the second auction in a row in which we achieved six-figure selling prices of Robert Crumb’s art for our clients.” The highlight of Nash’s collection was art by Crumb. The artist’s 1967 original cover art for ZAP Comix #1 soared to $525,800 (the cover was never used for the publication and was thought to be lost for many years). The People’s Comics complete fourpage story original art sold for $203,150. Even Crumb’s later works bested high estimates as Weirdo #22 complete four-page story original art from 1988 sold for $131,450, and Crumb’s 1991 ID #2 original cover art ended at $101,575 to round out the collection’s top sixfigure lots. Additional examples of Crumb’s art continued to beat expectations

Witman Auctioneers Inc. of Manheim, Pa., conducted a public auction on Aug. 12 for redware potter and collector C. Ned Foltz of Reinholds, Pa., which took place at Foltz’s shop and studio. It was a small sale of roughly 130 items, consisting of mostly plain redware from potters such as Medinger, Stahl, Schofield, some contemporary Southern potters, and, of course, Foltz himself. The following were some of the items sold. A Hattie Brunner autumn auction scene watercolor painting sold to a local collector for $8,800. Brunner (1890-1982), of Reinholds, was a well-known
antiques dealer who took up painting later in life. Her auction scenes depicted local sales and often included herself among other known, yet not identified individuals. Brunner painted herself in this scene in the front holding a black handbag with her arm raised. Foltz and Brunner were friends. He had bought the painting from the artist. A pair of carved and painted wooden horses within a fence by Luke Gottshall, along with a horse or donkey by Tim Strawser, sold together for $1,100 to a local collector.
