Graham Nash Collection Of Underground Art Tops $6.3 Million Comics Event Work By Robert Crumb Leads Sale Singer/songwriter Graham Nash’s collection of Underground Comix art realized more than $1.1 million to lead Heritage Auctions’ summer Vintage Comics and Comic Art Auction in Dallas, Texas, on Aug. 10, 11, and 12. The $6.3 million auction presented freshto-market art and key books to more than 2,800 bidders in person and via www.HALive. “The market for original comic art continues to show its strength – especially for works by Robert Crumb,” said Ed Jaster, senior vice president of Heritage Auctions. “This is the second auction in a row in which we achieved six-figure selling prices of Robert Crumb’s art for our clients.” The highlight of Nash’s collection was art by Crumb. The artist’s 1967 original cover art for ZAP Comix #1 soared to $525,800 (the cover was never used for the publication and was thought to be lost for many years). The People’s Comics complete fourpage story original art sold for $203,150. Even Crumb’s later works bested high estimates as Weirdo #22 complete four-page story original art from 1988 sold for $131,450, and Crumb’s 1991 ID #2 original cover art ended at $101,575 to round out the collection’s top sixfigure lots. Additional examples of Crumb’s art continued to beat expectations

The brilliantly colored designs of the beloved Tiffany Studios glass lamps and windows in the Neustadt Collection at the New-York Historical Society lend themselves perfectly to the format of a coloring book. “Tiffany Glass Coloring Book” includes more than 65 designs representing the magic naturalist world of Tiffany: dragonflies dancing among peonies, drooping wisteria, and daffodil blossoms bobbing across the page. These intricate drawings beg to be filled in with a riot of color and are sure to provide the meditative calming of the spirit that coloring book aficionados seek. These whimsical drawings, by renowned British illustrator Jessica Palmer, and inspired by Tiffany glass designs, are sure to delight old and new fans alike. About the author: Jessica Palmer is a British illustrator with a passion for drawing and paper-cutting. She

Witman Auctioneers Inc. of Manheim, Pa., conducted a public auction on Aug. 12 for redware potter and collector C. Ned Foltz of Reinholds, Pa., which took place at Foltz’s shop and studio. It was a small sale of roughly 130 items, consisting of mostly plain redware from potters such as Medinger, Stahl, Schofield, some contemporary Southern potters, and, of course, Foltz himself. The following were some of the items sold. A Hattie Brunner autumn auction scene watercolor painting sold to a local collector for $8,800. Brunner (1890-1982), of Reinholds, was a well-known

antiques dealer who took up painting later in life. Her auction scenes depicted local sales and often included herself among other known, yet not identified individuals. Brunner painted herself in this scene in the front holding a black handbag with her arm raised. Foltz and Brunner were friends. He had bought the painting from the artist. A pair of carved and painted wooden horses within a fence by Luke Gottshall, along with a horse or donkey by Tim Strawser, sold together for $1,100 to a local collector. around popular music, vintage or classic rock, and famous artists. However, that doesn’t mean that other genres of music aren’t valuable or collectible. Blues, adult contemporary, classical, and jazz also have their fair share of valuable finds. Enya is a favorite adult contemporary musician of mine. Listening to some of her best songs like “Orinoco Flow or “China Roses on vinyl record is almost akin to a religious experience. First pressings of her very first albums are extremely hard to find and in some cases can be very valuable. It pays to collect what you love and ignore the hype. You will always have a better chance of building a valuable collection if you simply buy what you love, and that love is what is driving sales of vinyl records in 2017. Happy hunting!

4. Look to new artists and new releases. Some speculation can pay off if one strictly sticks to collecting new vinyl releases. If you are fan of Muse or Nine Inch Nails, both artists have been committed to releasing their music on vinyl, and modern era new releases should, at the very least, hold their value if kept in near mint condition and cared for. Hint: check each band’s official website for the ability to sometimes purchase limited edition vinyl records that are sometimes not sold in stores. For example, one of my favorite artists is Trent Reznor, the man behind Nine Inch Nails. His eccentric and well-known website for Nine Inch Nails introduces limitededition vinyl pressings from time to time. These sell out quickly and have held their value quite well. Other popular artists do the same. 5. Condition is paramount. Most collectors want vinyl records in near mint condition or better. In vintage albums, this can be a challenge, as the average full length album pressed on a vinyl record is 12 inches in diameter. The jackets easily get worn or bent, and that has a serious impact on the value of any album. If you are a condition sensitive collector, your best bet is to buy in person or use a website like Discogs (www.discogs.com) that allows you to work with professional

a popular band like The Beatles, the sky can be the limit. That said, don’t expect to build a valuable collection just on thrift store finds. This is a developed hobby and one that serious collectors and investors are already aware of. 8. Decide what you want to keep sealed and what you want to play. In some vinyl record collecting circles, the mere mention of keeping records factory sealed is frowned upon. That said, sealed records do appreciate in value faster provided there is no wear to the album jacket. My limited green pressing of David Bowie’s controversial album titled “Excerpts from Outside is worth over $200 and will remain sealed. 9. Collect what you love. It is true that most of the well-known valuable vinyl records seem to center

According to a well publicized ICM poll, nearly 50 percent of all vinyl record buyers are under the age of 35. Vinyl record sales recently hit a new high, as the format has been well adored by collector enthusiasts, and audiophiles everywhere. This is causing a lot of people to start vinyl record collections of their own, while asking if modern era vinyl will ever have the collectability of vintage vinyl records. Listed below are some top tips for collecting vintage and contemporary vinyl records. 1. Avoid mass speculation and hype. “Record Store Day is an ingenious advertising campaign started by independent record stores and record companies to get shoppers into stores. On one set day a year, record companies release limited-edition vinyl pressings of popular albums and artists in very small quantities. Some of these pressings have gone on to be worth hundreds to thousands of dollars and are highly sought after. Much like the collectible holo-foil variant comic book craze of the 1990s, record companies are now putting out dozens of limitededition pressings of popular albums. Use common sense when buying. Not all of these

will become valuable. 2. It’s all about the pressing. Today, record companies are catering to the vinyl record explosion by rereleasing updated pressings of some of the most popular albums ever released. While an original 1990 first pressing of Pearl Jam’s debut album “Ten may set you back several hundred dollars, a modern era digitally remastered release of the same album may cost only $40 brand new at your favorite record store or on Amazon. Why? Because few bought the first original pressing back in the ’90s when CDs were all the rage. Hence, the original pressing will always be worth more! Be careful when buying modern remastered pressings for investment. These may sound great, but most lack any real collectability long-term. 3. Vintage is still king. You can find tons of vinyl records still sold today by artists and bands long gone. Pink Floyd, David Bowie, and the Rolling Stones are still being remastered and pressed right now. However, the original vintage vinyl is where the money is. Yes, there is a small chance that the modern remastered pressings of some of these popular artists will hold their value and go up over time, but if you want to be a serious collector, consider vintage instead of modern era remastered editions.

dealers who carefully assess the album’s condition. Just be forewarned that anyone can sell on Discogs, similar to eBay. Checking the seller’s feedback is a must! 6. Storage is of utmost important. Vinyl records take up a lot of space and need to be stored upright and not lying down. Storing vinyl records lying down on top of one another leads to warping and puts a lot of pressure on both the record and the album jacket. You can order vinyl record album sleeves that work much like comic book sleeves. Made out of mylar or similar materials, these plastic sleeves cover and protect the outer album cover to prevent any damage to the album’s jacket. Want a perfect, lowcost shelving unit for your record collection? Look into the ever popular Kallax shelving units from Ikea. These lowcost, cube-like shelves are the perfect size for vinyl records and can be customized in multiple sizes. 7. Search high and low when collecting vintage vinyl. Finding valuable vintage vinyl records is the stuff of urban legends thanks to the rise of eBay and shows like “Pawn Stars and “American Pickers. Still, it can and does happen, just not as often as it used to. Flea markets, yard sales, and thrift stores are all valid places to find used vinyl records from yesteryear. Most vintage vinyl records are worth very little, but if you are lucky to find a first pressing of

The long days of summer are waning, and what more powerful harbinger of autumn is there than the start of a new school year? For many, this time of year revives memories of the past. Who does not remember that mixture of trepidation and excitement when walking into a new classroom for the first time? This month, the Grist Mill Antiques Center in Pemberton, N.J., is recalling those memories of school days past with memorabilia in its sale display showcases. Stop by to see the school-themed memorabilia collected and assembled to recapture the time when life was full of imagination and possibilities. Readers may mark their calendars for the Grist Mill’s semiannual flea market slated for Sunday, Oct. 22, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Dealers from both the Grist Mill and Haddon Heights Antiques Center will be participating, among others. “What’s It Worth Antique Minute By Mike Ivankovich This is a very simple question. But don’t look yet. Answer the question before you check your wallet or purse. How many dollar signs are on a U.S. $20 bill? If you said “four (one for each front corner), “eight (one for each corner front and back), or any other number, you

would be incorrect. Now check your currency. The correct answer is “zero. There are no “$ signs on a U.S. $20 bill, or any other current U.S currency, including the $1, $5, $10, $20, $50, or $100 bills. Over the years a few banknotes had the dollar sign, but

the vast majority have not. Where did the dollar sign originate? One theory is that it’s based upon the Spanish American Peso, which served as the model for our U.S. currency back in 1785. Another theory is that the dollar sign, which originally had two vertical lines through it, was based upon a “U overlaid upon an “S, which over time evolved into just one vertical line over an “S. What’s it worth? This focused presentation will introduce visitors to the evolution of Rodin’s draftsmanship and demonstrate the essential role of drawing in his practice. It will also address Rodin’s engagement with photographers, especially Edward Steichen (1879–1973), who served as a key intermediary in bringing Rodin’s drawings to New York. “Rodin at The Met” begins a new chapter in the museum’s long-standing engagement with Rodin. On the centenary of the death of Auguste Rodin (1840–1917), The Metropolitan Museum of Art will celebrate its historic collection of the artist’s work in “Rodin at The Met,” opening Saturday, Sept. 16. Nearly 50 marbles, bronzes, plasters, and terracottas by Rodin, representing more than a century of acquisitions and gifts to the museum, will be displayed in the newly installed and refurbished Iris and B. Gerald Cantor Sculpture Gallery (Gallery 800). The exhibition will feature iconic sculptures such as “The Thinker” and “The Hand of God,” as well as masterpieces such as “The Tempest” that have not been on view in decades. Paintings from The Met’s collection by some of Rodin’s most admired contemporaries, including his friends Claude Monet (1840–1926) and Pierre Puvis de Chavannes (1824–98), will be presented in dialogue with the sculptures on display. The exhibition is made possible by the Iris & B. Gerald Cantor Foundation. The extraordinary range of The Met’s

Estimated at $26,000-$42,000, Nellie soared to $108,300, with competitive bidding from private collectors as well as museums. The doll had been in the private collection of an important British collector, who also
