Newly Discovered Edward Curtis Alaskan Photos Will Appear At Muskegon Museum Of Art Book Has Been Published To Go Along With Exhibition The Muskegon Museum of Art (MMA) in Muskegon, Mich., will present “Edward S. Curtis: Unpublished Alaska, the Lost Photographs” from Sept. 16 through Jan. 9, 2022. This first-time public showing features images made from recently discovered original negatives by Edward Sherriff Curtis. The book “Unpublished Alaska” features over 100 images along with excerpts from the personal journals of Curtis and his daughter, Beth Curtis Magnuson, describing their harrowing adventures in the Bering Sea. Background On June 8, 1927, Curtis, accompanied by daughter Beth and newly employed Stewart C. Eastwood, set sail on the steamer ship Victoria towards Nome, Alaska. The purpose of their voyage was to complete the photography and research for the final, 20th volume of Curtis’s masterwork, “The North American Indian.” Begun in 1898, “The North American Indian” was the defining Continued on page 2

Crocker Farm Sets New Mark For American Ceramics By Karl Pass In 2015, Crocker Farm sold a large stoneware cooler attributed to Baltimore, Md., for $483,000, setting a then record for American stoneware. It is still the record for cobalt decorated stoneware. In 2018, in England, a new high water mark was established for American ceramics when $806,000 was paid for the John Bartlam teapot sold at Woolley and Wallis. It is now at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. On Aug. 7, the Zipp family of Crocker Farm sold Dave Drake’s 25-gallon poem jar for $1.56 million. The buyer was the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art. Located in Bentonville, Ark., it was founded in 2005 by Alice

Walton. There were three major art museums bidding during the live callback session. Dave Drake’s most recent auction record was established by Brunk Auctions in the fall of 2020 at $369,000. The enslaved and later free African-American potter “Dave,” as his work is signed, is known today as Dave Drake. He potted at a succession of stoneware shops in South Carolina’s Edgefield District. Born, ca. 1800, a man of tremendous strength, he was capable of throwing immense vessels. And 163 years later, the man and his work is entering the discourse not only within academic pottery circles, but through the publicity of auction results of his work

over the recent past and the general public. In fact, “Dave” was even the subject of a Jeopardy question. “He was born into a system of slavery that sought to rob him of his individual identity and yet he was able to rise above that in his day and now not only became a household name, but by at least one metric, he now stands above all other American potters,” stated Luke Zipp. No question, the sale was one for the history books. This particular poem or verse jar reads, “Lm . April 12 . 1858 /Dave,” and also, “A very large Jar which has 4 handles / pack it full of fresh meats – then light candles.” There are 25 small slash marks, denoting its 25-gallon capacity. Jars such as this were sealed with candle wax for preserving meat. Four Dave jars are known with four handles, necessary because it took multiple people to lift and carry the vessel, especially when full. About 35 Dave jars are known with poem or verse script. Few are signed and dated. The “Lm” refers to Lewis Miles, the potter’s owner who operated Stony Bluff from 1840 to 1868, a stoneware manufactory in the Horse Creek Valley of the Edgefield District. The date on this piece (April 12, 1858) falls in a three-week period from March 31 to April 21, 1858, which includes three other known poem jars (one is at The Met). The size too immense to dip for glazing, it received a spontaneously poured glaze providing a vertically flowing appearance and multiple textures on its fired surface. The thicker, heavier areas exhibit smooth and glossy olive green striping. There is a luster quality to the multi-tone glaze, ranking this example that much more exceptional. Surviving without cracks, it has four areas of loss to the rim. The ovoid vessel stands nearly 25 inches high with a circumference of 77 inches. It had a presale estimate of $300,000-$600,000. Consigned by Dr. John Burrison, a Southern folk historian and author in Atlanta, Ga., it has been on loan at the Atlanta History Center for the last 40 years. you imagine if PCGS and NGC, two third-party grading market leaders who grade coins, decided tomorrow that there were going to stop publishing population reports for all the coins they grade? Keep in mind at present time there are coins that sell for close to $20 million dollars on the open market, and prices are still rising! Collectors, investors, and dealers would rise up in protest. Sadly, that is not happening in the world of graded video games. I can assure you that even at 9.8 A++ condition, there are more copies of Super Mario 64 floating around in that condition. Even in 1996, video games were seen as collectible, and these games were meticulously packed in groups of 6 in outer cardboard boxes and then sent to distributors. That copy of Super Mario 64 is by no means the only one out there. In conclusion, critics will lament that people often pay a record price for something even if it turns out not to be a good financial investment. This is very true, but when you are playing in an unregulated market, which is what most of the antiques and collectibles trade is, wouldn’t you want to have as much information at your fingertips as possible when making your decision? What should really be baking the noddle of starry-eyed speculators operating in this market at present time is why a top tier grading company in a relatively new collectibles market chooses to not publically release population reports for the items they grade while starry-eyed speculators turn a blind eye to this atrocity. For this is tragedy and not something to celebrate. More to come.

On July 11, the video game collecting world was surprised to learn that a factory-sealed copy of Super Mario 64, which was released for the Nintendo 64 in North America in 1996, just became the most valuable video game to ever sell at auction. The game was graded by WATA Games in 9.8 factorysealed condition and had an A++ factory seal rating. Heritage Auctions sold the game to the highest bidder, who paid a whopping $1,560,000 for the game (price reported includes the 20-percent buyer’s premium). If you have been involved with what has been happening over the past few years in regards to video game collectibles, this record sale should make you at least a little bit suspicious. Yes, it is true that video games are now a part of our everyday culture. In fact, you probably cannot log into your Netflix account without coming into contact with a movie, show, or animated series that is not based on a video game. It is obvious to anyone who has ever laid eyes on a modern era video game, whether it be via a Nintendo Switch, a Sony Playstation 5, or even an Xbox One, that video games have come a very long way since Asteroids and Pac-Man graced the living room’s Atari 2600 console back in the early 1980s. Today’s games are an immersive experience, and thanks in part to Nintendo’s brilliant strategy of bringing a

will see it was not just one buyer who bought that game, but several auction company and collectible investing insiders. This is why the Super Mario 64 sale should raise more than a few eyebrows. Another factor that seems to be eluding certain collectors in the video game market right now is the fact that a factory-sealed copy of Super Mario 64 is not exceedingly rare. In fact, VGA (Video Game Authority) has been grading video games a lot longer than WATA Games, and they used to release publically available population reports that showed how many copies of these games were graded and in what subsequent grade they received. Compounding matters in this market are two very disturbing trends. The first is that both VGA and WATA Games use vastly different grading scales that on the surface can easily confuse the average collector or speculator. WATA Games uses the comic book grading scale and applies it to video games. VGA uses the action figure and toy grading scaled adopted by their parent company division, AFA (Action Figure Authority), and applies it to video games. This has worked to create a lot of confusion in the overall marketplace, especially as WATA Games cements itself as the market leader for grading vintage video games. Collectors still don’t seem to understand that a WATA Games 8.5 graded game is in much lesser condition than that of a VGA 85 graded game. The VGA 85 is actually equivalent to a WATA Games 9.4, due to the idiosyncrasies of their grading scale. And if this weren’t enough to confuse newcomers to this market, we still have yet to get to the most bothersome issue; WATA Games simply refuses to release population reports for the items they grade. Could

lot of their beloved characters to life, video game characters like Super Mario, Donkey Kong, Samus Aran, and even Kid Icarus have become household names just like Spider-Man, Iron Man, and Batman have. The future is and always has been bright for video games and the enthusiasts that cherish these games. Unfortunately, this is where most starry-eyed collectors and speculators tend to focus, and they would not be wrong. However, it is what is lurking under the facade of this not-so-innocent market that holds the answers as to why true video game collectors should be horrified that a copy of Super Mario 64 sold for over $1.5 million even in high factory-sealed condition like the one offered. It is here that I wish to focus. Super Mario 64 is by no means the rarest and most coveted video game in existence, even if it is the most valuable at present time. Looking through the myriad of auction data we have at our disposal we can go back several years when WATA Games first premiered on the scene and made a quick appearance on the reality television show “Pawn Stars” in which they gleefully showed off a very rare sticker sealed copy of Super Mario Bros. released back in 1985 for the then exciting and new Nintendo Entertainment System. This game was a first production run of Super Mario Bros. Without that game and its metamorphic success, Super Mario 64 would have never of existed. As such, that particular game was sold for just a little over $100,000, and that sale was not exactly fully organic. Insiders in the video game collecting community colluded to make it a thing. If you have any doubt, go back and read some of the articles surrounding that sale, and you

The boxcar was the top lot in an auction that grossed $400,000 and set several record prices. “What is normally an offmonth for us turned into a two-day gangbuster sale, with record prices realized in all areas of toy trains,” said Philip Weiss, the owner of Weiss Auctions. “There were 498 lots of trains in total, and all 498 sold, most for above estimate and some even multiple times the estimate. Toys did well, too, but trains right now are so hot we have more auctions planned.” The American Flyer G. Fox & Co. boxcar is one of the most desired trains a collector can own. The price realized for the one sold was a new auction record. “It’s the Holy Grail for American Flyer collectors for sure, and the winning bidder had been trying to get one for the last 30 years,” according to Weiss. “It was a respectable example, Tuscan painted on white mold with nice lettering.” The toy train auction featured part two of Frank Pisani’s American Flyer S gauge collection (including the G. Fox boxcar), a six-foot dealer poster, three and five digit NP passenger sets, the latter being boxed, nice fivedigit boxcars and reefers and many diesel and steam sets. Also sold were many S gauge accessories from the Neil Padron estate. All prices reported include a buyer’s premium. Internet bidding was provided by

Eaton was also a founding board member of the North American Textile Conservation Conference and a member of the board of Textile Society of America. “Linda arrived in 1990 as the head of textile conservation and was initially my supervisor,” said Joy Gardiner, head of Conservation for Winterthur. “She quickly proved an excellent mentor to me and so many others, and she became a long-term good friend for my family, a wonderful presence and influence in our daughter’s life. Linda was a textilian to her core and a staunch, one might even say fierce, advocate for the objects made from fibers and the people who created them. In her generous sharing of this advocacy in teaching, publications, workshops and exhibitions, she fostered an expanded appreciation of the medium at Winterthur and well beyond. Her influence will be long lasting.” Outside the museum and the classroom, Eaton served as the volunteer president of the Arden Craft Museum Board, which preserves the unique history of three communities known collectively as The Ardens. Linda’s leadership helped to transform the museum into a center of the villages that offers yearround programs and attracts researchers from around the country. Eaton trained at the Textile Conservation Centre and the Courtauld Institute of Art before working for the National Museums of Scotland. Linda arrived at Winterthur in 1991 as a textile conservator. She became curator of textiles in 2000 and was promoted to director of museum collections and senior curator of textiles in 2009. Eaton was named the John L. and Marjorie P. McGraw Director of Collections and Senior Curator of Textiles in 2012. She retired in December 2020. A curator of textiles position was recently created in her name.

through teaching hundreds of graduate students in the Winterthur Program in American Material Culture and the Winterthur/University of Delaware Program in Art Conservation. She inspired future curators by widely sharing her enthusiasm with everyone from kindergartners and her graduate students to serious quilters, stitchers, designers, embroiderers, and general audiences. Hundreds of loyal followers attended her regular needlework conferences at Winterthur. Eaton curated popular and scholarly exhibitions about embroidery such as “Quilts in a Material World”; “Needles and Haystacks: Pastoral Imagery in American Needlework”; “With Cunning Needle: Four Centuries of Embroidery”; “The Diligent Needle: Instrument of Profit, Pleasure, and Ornament”; and “Embroidery: The Language of Art,” as well as “Betsy Ross: The Life Behind the Legend,” co-curated with Dr. Marla Miller. Eaton curated the popular “Treasures on Trial: The Art and Science of Detecting Fakes,” and she was an instrumental partner in one of Winterthur’s most memorable exhibitions, “Costuming ‘The Crown’” in 2019, the only exhibition of costumes from the popular Netflix series. Her publications include “Quilts in a Material World: Selections from the Winterthur Collection” (2007) and “Printed Textiles: British and American Cottons and Linens, 1700–1850” (2014), a revision of Florence Montgomery’s seminal 1970 book. Eaton’s latest publication, “Erica Wilson: A Life in Stitches,” co-authored with Anne Hilker, was released in December 2020. “Linda must hold the record for number of scholarly publications and exhibitions emanating from Winterthur,” said Tom Savage, the former director of external affairs at Winterthur and a longtime friend. “Her ‘Quilts in a Material World’ book and exhibition placed Winterthur’s extraordinary collection in a global context. There was nothing parochial about her approach. She knew the wide world of textiles internationally and brought that vast knowledge to the study of the most minute topic. Her update of Florence Montgomery’s ‘Printed Textiles’ gave this landmark work new life as the publication of record on the topic. Two generations of scholars benefitted from her tutelage at Winterthur as

New England Antiques At The Peacham Carriage Company Selling Antiques In The Northeast Kingdom By Beth Kanell It helps to own an 1830 house when you’re selecting antiques for a Vermont shop. When John Engle of Peacham Carriage Company examines a new item for his stock, he begins with whether it would look good over his own mantelpiece. That test can’t apply to larger items, like the elegant carriage in the front of the shop, one of two that may have carried President Lincoln in Boston, but for handstitched samplers, “primitive” paintings, butter molds, even railroad items and cast-iron banks, the sense of “fitting in” for his period home often guides this owner. The shop features more than 3,000 items. Re-opening after pandemic closures coupled with an accelerated housing boom in Vermont meant that in a single recent month, Engle and his nephew, Peter Anthony, manager, assisted buyers and collectors in taking home more duck decoys, bird carvings, kerosene lanterns, marbles, hat pins, buttons, clocks, signs, and, of course, cat and dog images than in an entire year pre-pandemic. Lamps also change hands often, especially in Tiffany and other

Marburger Farm Show To Run From Oct. 26 to 30 New Show Owners Take Over Five-Day Antiques Event In Texas

of a show in great shape,” said Buonamici. “Tents are full, we are adding more dealer space, the staff is wonderful and ticket sales are strong. It’s going to be a joy for us and a fantastic five days of commerce for buyers and sellers.” With expertise in event production and promotion, as well as real estate, Brook Partners produces the Dallas Art Fair and owns the 75,000-square-feet Fashion Industry Gallery (FIG). In addition to producing contemporary high-end fashion trade shows, FIG is also a top special events venue in the Dallas Arts District, and the Dallas Art Fair, a high-end, thoughtfully curated international art fair hosted at FIG, is now celebrating its 12th edition. Marburger Farm, with 43 acres of pasture, blue bonnets, and historic buildings, will be an exciting contrast for the

multi-faceted company. From New York to New Mexico, shoppers will converge in Round Top for Marburger’s “Tailgate Tuesday.” From 8 to 10 a.m. the morning of opening day, the tradition of complimentary coffee, mimosas, breakfast treats, easy parking and pre-show shopping along the corridor will carry on, with early buying for the entire show beginning at 10 a.m. What will fill the show’s

nine huge tents and 10 historic buildings? Expect booths filled with American, European and global antiques, antique and contemporary fine art, textiles, Midcentury, jewelry, furniture, rugs, silver and accessories of every style and era. Longtime exhibitor Mary Lee Snuffer of Pennsylvania says she will arrive with classic American furniture and paintings, as well as vintage lucite, chrome, and “all the building blocks for a great mix.” In business as Bedford on the Square Antiques, Snuffer says that she keeps coming back to Marburger because so many of its shoppers “have learned the fine art of mixing the traditional with midcentury modern.” Adds Snuffer, “Brook Partners will bring new energy, new perspective and lots of new ideas; it will be very good for Marburger.”

“don’t quite know what they’re looking for but realize they like it when they see it.” Engle’s own increasing fascination with samplers focuses on what the stitcher, usually a girl age 8 to 15 years, was “trying to say.” He deciphers reversed letters and unusual spellings while admiring color and form and contemplating life in early New England. “Everybody’s got to have a passion,” he admits. they trust us; it’s like meeting up with old friends.” Suzan Dentry, an early Marburger dealer from Colorado, is eager to meet the new owners and to experience “the adventure and joy of the show.” She says that the collection she is bringing will be the best booth of her career, including paintings, 100 pieces of Victorian mother-of-pearl, silver, folk art and furniture, again, those building blocks for a unique mix. “So many of the great shows in America have been watered down or ended,” she says. “This new chapter with Brook Partners is an opportunity to do it right and for Marburger to stand out, shine and thrive.” California exhibitor Suzanne Fox will amaze with her ability to transport and unveil over two dozen iron and concrete urns, pots, benches and statues. How does she do it? “Whether I buy it in New Orleans or England,” says Fox, “We ship each piece directly to our storage near Marburger. It never goes anywhere else.” With displays spilling out of the show’s historic Saloon, she will mix French planters, American weathervanes, and hard-tofind English Coalbrookdale cast-iron with a mated pair of

A former museum registrar, Schmidt offers art that is “less obvious, by unknown artists but of great quality,” including six paintings of dinosaurs from the walls of an old children’s museum. Says Schmidt, “I’m looking for customers at Marburger who recognize objects that can stand on their own, regardless of who made them.” Missouri exhibitor Steve Ball of Horsefeathers Antiques has held back a pair of large cast-iron console tables with green marble tops, as well as a Dutch inlaid early case clock, over seven feet tall. And it works. Also in tow: art, jewelry and folk art. “You only take really great things to Marburger, nothing mediocre,” said Ball. “Our customers in Texas seem to like our eye, and

Trader’s Cabin behind the house dates to 1720. From the 1730s into the 1740s, it was a dwelling for Swedish explorer Hans Steelman, an Indian trader and interpreter. After the Battle of Gettysburg and prior to Confederate troops moving South, diaries tell stories of temporary bivouacs/camps set up on the farm. The Bowdens raised sheep on the land, and the house and barn are registered by Historic Gettysburg as historic structures. The Trader’s Cabin

FLYING PIG AUCTIONS PRESENTS THE ESTATE OF LINDA PETERSON HEARD Late of Warren, CT & Formerly of Kinderhook, NY (Lindowens American Country Antiques)

AMERICANA, COUNTRY ANTIQUES & PRIMITIVES ONLINE AUCTION – PHONE, ABSENTEE & INTERNET BIDDING AVAILABLE

MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 27TH at 5:30 P.M. LIVE PREVIEW: Thursday, September 16th– Monday, September 27th from 10am-5pm

867 Route 12, Westmoreland, NH 03467 (GPS address) 13 Industrial Park Dr., WESTMORELAND, NH 03647 (Mailing address) PH: 603-543-7490; 413-537-4855 • Email: flyingpigantiquesnh@gmail.com • flying-pig-auctions.liveauctioneers.com

Flying Pig Auctions is honored to present The Estate of Linda Peterson Heard: A lifelong personal collection of primitive & country American Antiques. Growing up in Massachusetts, and spending much of her life in New England, Linda Heard was surrounded by the architecture, furniture, and cultural hallmarks of colonial America. Those early experiences informed her eye for authenticity and developed an understanding of the vernacular of simple timeless design. Couple Linda’s degree in interior de-

sign with having a mother who was an antique dealer in her own right (Broad Arrow Antiques), it seems only natural that Linda’s passions for early American antiques would be life-long. In Linda’s early professional years, she created Sprig of Thyme Antiques and focused primarily on early painted furniture, but developed rich collections of Shaker boxes, baskets, hog-scrapper candlesticks, hooked rugs, and “makedos,” the unique artifacts born from broken items repaired out of necessity by early homesteaders. In her home, it was common to hear phrases like, “sweet size and rare form,” when various pieces were described, or how faded well-worn blue paint on a corner cupboard inspired her. In the latter half of Linda’s life, her taste moved further towards more primitive examples of early American life. From folk-style scare crows to homespun fabrics, and the relationship of dried herbs and flowers to the early American

kitchen, Linda created an extraordinary and unique world that any visitor could easily get lost in, feeling transported to another time. Linda Heard died in the spring of 2021, and beyond the extraordinary collections of antiques she gathered over the course of her life, she left an indelible mark upon a corner of the antiquing world through her warmth, care, and welcoming nature. Save the date! This is one every country antique & primitive dealer/collector will want to see!
