A Profile In Pennsylvania German Studies:

Dr. Robert Kline By Karl Pass

r. Robert (Bob) Kline and his wife, Ann, have been interested in Pennsylvania German culture and decorative arts for the major part of their lives. A retired medical doctor, Bob practiced in Lebanon, Pa., prior to the couple’s move to the country outside of Schaefferstown, Pa. Bob was raised in Schaefferstown and learned the Pennsylvania German dialect early in his upbringing. “My mother sparked my interest in Pennsylvania German cul-

ture,” said Kline. In 1956, Bob joined the Pennsylvania German Society, where he served on the board from 1959 to 2010 and worked in many capacities throughout his tenure. One of Bob’s main collecting and scholarly passions is fraktur, the illumi-

nated manuscripts most often associated with Pennsylvania Germans, which include personal documents such as birth and baptismal certificates. In his early days of collecting, “people were coming into town and buying the colorful documents at farm sales for $25 to $30 each at a time when the average salary was $1/day,” noted Kline. “I think things really got started after the Sussel sale,” noted Kline, in reference to the rising marketplace for fraktur among folk art collectors. Arthur J. Sussel was a well-known antiques dealer in Philadelphia. His collection, which included important examples of fraktur, was sold in 1958 at Parke-Bernet Galleries (now Sotheby’s) in New York City. Numerous record prices were achieved, and the sale is still considered one of the high watermark moments for the fraktur market. A trip in 1962 to the Free Library of Philadelphia to meet Howell Heaney also fueled his interest in the subject of fraktur. At the Free Library, Kline photographed much of the collection. In 1976, Heaney, along with Pastor Fred Weiser, compiled a two-volume publication with images and translations of over 1,000 fraktur in the Free Library’s collection. Bob was instrumental in identifying fraktur artist

ing, some of which is inspired by and an interpretation of the work of legendary 19th-century folk carver Wilhelm Schimmel. The sisters also do scherenschnitte (scissor cuttings). The couple also collect the folk carvings of Carl Snavely (1915-1983). Snavely and his wife, Florence, were from Lititz, Pa. He was an antiques dealer and carved birds and other animals in his spare time. “I once traded a piece of spatter (china) to Carl for an eagle he carved,” said Kline. Snavely worked with just a pocket knife and was known for exceptional detail and Dr. Robert (Bob) Kline is an avid scholar and collector of folky stylistic carvings. Pennsylvania German folk art. He is shown here with four The Klines’ interest in “four seasons” paintings by the late painter/antiques dealer Pennsylvania German culHattie Brunner. Kline bought the paintings from Brunner in the early 1970s. “We used to speak the dialect (Pennsylvania German) together,” said Kline. The paintings were archivally framed in paint-decorated frames that were made by the author’s parents in the 1970s.

Arnold Hoevelmann, and he published his findings in a 1970 issue of the Pennsylvania German Society’s “Der Reggeboge” in a co-authored article with Pastor Weiser. Hoevelmann (1749-1804) emigrated from Prussia to Pennsylvania and worked in both the Annville (Lebanon County) and Shiremanstown (Cumberland County) areas in the late 18th century. August Baumann is another fraktur artist in whom Bob has had a scholarly interest. Working rough-

ture extends to open hearth cooking, baking, and gardening. They have propagated 500 saffron bulbs and are currently in the process of thinning and replanting them. Saffron is an ancient spice popular among the Pennsylvania Germans and it comes from the saffron crocus flower. The red stigmas, once dried, are used as a seasoning agent in dishes such as chicken pot pie. Whether through publishing articles, giving lectures, or sharing their vast intellectual memory of all things pertaining to Pennsylvania German life and culture with friends and family, the Klines continue to remain close to the subject that is a part of their heritage.

ly 100 years later than Hoevelmann, this calligrapher/scrivener worked in Lehigh and Montgomery counties. Baumann is known for his realistic drawings and highly artistic penmanship done in red ink. The Klines also have a collecting interest in contemporary Pennsylvania German folk art. The couple has one of the largest holdings of folk carvings by the Dierwechter sisters, local craftswomen from This fraktur by Arnold Hoevelmann in the Kline collection Schaefferstown. Kamelot Auction House will begin the fall 2013 auction season with a two-day sale on Friday, Sept. 20, and Saturday, Sept. 21, at their site at 4700 Wissahickon Ave. 107, Philadelphia, Pa. Brimming with quality craftsmanship, elegance and aesthetic panache, this designdriven sale will showcase over 900 lots in its entirety. Together, the two days will bring a variety of fine art, decorative objects, Orientalia, lighting, rugs, and a select gathering of Continental, Art Deco, and mid-century modern furnishings to the podium. Friday’s portion of the sale comprises decorative arts, fine art, Orientalia, estate rugs, and Continental furniture. Leading the Orientalia is a fine and rare antique Chinese carved rhinoceros horn featuring a tiger with captured prey resting on its original carved wood stand. Estimated at a conservative $1,000-$2,000 it will undoubtedly garner considerable competition on the auction floor. On the same par is a set of eight antique Chinese rosewood panels having hand-painted hard stone plaques, each featuring a unique scene. Other noteworthy pieces from the decorative arts collection include a monumental metal and stone Mephistopheles clock on a fine walnut stand. Towering at over six feet tall, this goliath would be a handsome addition to any collection.

While walking to the nearest American consulate in France to receive money, they joined up with a group of travelling performers, making drawings in exchange for room and board. These early works reveal traces of Whistler’s later, signature style. Of James McNeill Whistler’s Beginnings As An Artist In the summer of 1858, a young James McNeill Whistler (1834–1903) left Paris and set off on a walking tour of the Rhineland, in what would be one of the most important experiences of his early career. His goals were Amsterdam - the home of Rembrandt, an early and lasting influence - and to make his mark on the artistic world. “Off the Beaten Path: Early Works by James McNeill Whistler, on view Saturday, Sept. 28, to Sept. 28, 2014, at the Smithsonian’s Freer Gallery of Art, explores the art that Whistler created on his journey and its lasting importance on his subsequent masterworks. “Wine Antiques And Collectibles By Donald A. Bull And Joseph C. Paradi Schiffer Publishing Ltd. is pleased to announce the release of “Wine Antiques and Collectibles. Over 2,100 vibrant photos and lively text present an array of wine memorabilia in the 336-page book. Following a look at wine and health, with a toast to readers and a look at Bacchanalia, the book takes a four-part journey from the vineyard to the wine cellar. Part one looks at various tools used in growing grapes, harvesting, and the production of wine. Tools used by coopers in barrel making, wine sampling and tasting devices, and bottling tools are covered. The next step is “Drinking Wine, in which many implements for removing corks, retrieving corks, and preserving wine are revealed. Serving devices include an extraordinary batch of cradles and caddies. In part three, promotional items revealed include statues, games, fans, tokens, signs, and office accessories. The last part is a look at a collection of wine antiques from a museum in Spain. The final step is into an 1810 wine cellar with a list of “the necessaries always wanted in wine and spirit vaults, and gentlemen’s cellars. To learn more, visit www.schifferbooks.com.

Fully restored portraits of soldiers take over the Hermansader home as they await their return to the Columbia VFW.

Wysock, Beth Yohe, Marty Bigler, Cheryl Richardson, and co-chairs Denise Ritchie and Kathy Williams all donated time and effort into finding the right resources to restore the portraits properly. The community was immediately on board. “We received donations from $20 to $500 from individuals, and more from businesses, some outside of the Columbia area, Williams noted. “This was something people were passionate about. The paintings had suf-

fered the effects of smoke damage from their years in the VFW, particularly during the 1960s and ‘70s, when smoking was more prevalent. “They were in really bad shape, really deteriorating, Williams noted. Once sufficient funds had been raised, the Fallen Heroes Committee began to take bids for the restoration of all 85 portraits. In serendipitous response, a Columbia native restoration expert, Tom Hermansader, offered a bid to perform the cleaning and restoration of all 85 portraits. So far, he is in his third week of work for the project, having logged over 100 hours. “I wanted to do this (job); it’s a way to honor these men, he said. Restoring the individual portraits includes removing them from their frames and cleaning them, removing years of dust, grime, and smoke residue. Hermansader then touches up the paintings with a technique that restorers call in-painting. The last step in the process includes varnishing the touched-up portraits, staining and repairing the frames, and then rewiring the completed portrait. Most of the 85 portraits

The portraits of 85 fallen servicemen from the Columbia, Pa., area have undergone quite a journey. In August 2012, Columbia Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 2435 began the arduous task of removing the portraits from the walls of the VFW, where they had been hanging since the 1960s. The VFW then started fundraising efforts to have them restored. The portraits are the work of the late Richard Fritz, a Columbia native who painted many of the men from tiny, two-inch-by-three-inch photographs. He painted in his basement in his spare time, motivated by his desire to honor the men from his hometown who had fought so bravely for this country. Fritz donated the portraits to hang in a place of honor at the VFW. After he passed away in 1994, the members of the VFW were moved by the same desire to honor the men in the portraits, and they began their quest for restoration. in the collection are displayed as quads, which are four paintings grouped into one frame. This past Memorial Day, Columbia resident Bill Kloidt was invited to speak at a celebration concerning the portraits and the men they portray. His speech captured the life of these men as they grew up in the Columbia area and later shipped off to war, never to return. “In honor of these men whose faces forever look back at us, and to those in VA hospitals and homes, who together combined to preserve our freedom and liberty ... we must recapture and maintain virtue, and, like these men, be vigilant and honorable,” Kloidt said in his speech that day. All those involved in the restoration effort have been planning a special open house for the return of the portraits

to their home at the VFW. While the date will be determined upon completion of the work, organizers are looking at the end of summer or early fall. For more information, readers may visit www.her mansadersartgallery.com or call the Columbia VFW at 717-684-7380.

success, especially with men, where watches have taken the place of shoes as status symbols, both in their personal lives and in business. Remember when single women would glance at a man’s shoes to get a general idea of his income level? Well, now their eyes are being cast toward men’s wrists to see how expensive his timepiece is. I personally know a guy who bought a Breitling just to impress women; on the other hand, a financial adviser friend bought one for the sole purpose of landing high-end clients. Guy number one bought his for $475 at a “noguarantees” auction; guy number two got his from a jewelry store. Result? Guy number one got burned with a fake, while guy number two now sports the real deal. Unfortunately, you really

Yes, you can potentially pay less, but you’ll also have wasted the hundreds or even thousands of dollars you did shell out if the watch is a fake with no real value. And if you collect watches, those numbers can really add up.

Rolex GMT-Master-II

Two of the most replicated - and valuable - watch brands are Breitling and Rolex. These watches are handed down through the generations in many families, and their value can actually increase over time, especially after a model stops being produced. So when you see one of these exquisite timepieces being offered for hundreds instead of thousands of dollars, your first red flag should go up. Breitling. The devil is in the details with these replicas. Don’t be embarrassed to bring a magnifier to check the small stuff, it’s the best way to spot a fake. Check for misspellings, missing text, and smudged or unclear lettering. The back of the watch should have text specific to the model, along with the model and serial numbers. If any of this information is incorrect, fuzzy, or misspelled, it’s a fake. Breitlings are precision instruments made with the highest (Continued on page 22)

Serial letters out of order, unevenly spaced, or unevenly sized. 5. Base metal under gold plating. 6. Gold karat mark on a watch caseback or bracelet that should be made of stainless steel. 7. Unusually loud ticking sound on a Rolex. Reference books, websites, and collecting groups are the best ways to keep from being fooled by fakes. on the back with the case reference number; if the watch was made after 2002, it will also have the trademark crown. On the other hand, a fake sticker may not have the holographic quality, so it won’t appear 3-dimensional when viewed at different angles. It may also have incorrect text on the sticker. The golden rule with high-end watches is: if it isn’t “right,” it isn’t real. Any good watch purchase should come with a detailed receipt and money-back guarantee in case you discover that the watch is fake after you take it home or take it to a reputable, knowledgeable jeweler. Not all jewelers are watch experts, and many have been fooled by fakes themselves, so find someone with experience. All photos via Wikipedia.

and (2) some pre-1990s ladies’ watch models had a variation of “Original Rolex Design” engraved in an arc on the back, and Sea-Dweller backs had “Rolex Oyster Original Gas Escape Valve” engraved around the outer edge of the back. Engraved letters and numbers almost always hold some clues. High-end watch companies like Rolex evenly space letter and number series, their sizes are uniform, and the engraving is crisp and clear. Fakes can have uneven spacing, non-uniform sizes, blurry engraving, or reversals of letters in specific codes. You may need to open up the watch in order to check for all these details, but a reputable seller will allow such a close inspection. New Rolexes come with a hologram encoded sticker

ments that counterfeiters usually overlook or duplicate incorrectly. Because of space restrictions, we’ll just talk about some overall generalities. First of all, all Rolexes are waterproof, so any Rolex that leaks underwater is a fake. Another easy thing to check is the “cyclops” - the magnifier over the date. It should give a 2.5 times magnification, and no less. Most fakes only reach 1.5 times magnification, though some are getting closer. For the most part, the caseback shouldn’t be engraved, and it shouldn’t be clear. Of course, there are exceptions to both of these general rules: (1) Rolex did make a couple of watches with clear glass casebacks in the 1930s, but they didn’t become production pieces;

attention to quality, so anything less just isn’t a Breitling. Breitling bands and heads that are made of stainless steel have some weight to them, whereas the fakes are lighter and may not be stainless (some Breitlings are made from titanium, so you need to know what your model should be). While you’re focused on the band, look at the endpieces - the Breitling name should be clearly stamped into one end and the logo should be stamped on the other. You may also find the brand name on the back of the links. Breitling also makes bands out of hides such as cowhide and crocodile (no synthetic leather-like materials are

sale in southern California.” In honor of the Auburn Cord Duesenberg Festival, locally built vehicles were prominently featured among the 1,123 automobiles offered, with top sales honors going to a highly desirable 1930 Duesenberg Model J convertible coupe selling for $1,540,000; a rare 1929 Duesenberg Model J sports sedan for $962,500; and a 1935 Duesenberg Model SJ Dual-Cowl Phaeton for $858,000. All were sold during Saturday’s all-new salon offering. Rounding out the top five sales and attracting enthusiastic bidding were an iconic 1973 Ferrari 365 GTB/4 Daytona selling for $434,500 and a striking 1933 Auburn Twelve Boattail Speedster for $371,250. Once again proving that Auctions America is an auction house of choice for the sale of private collections, Auburn Fall presented several important collections. Renowned collector and enthusiast Kirk F. White sold a diverse group of 404 lots of memorabilia and antiques

from his personal collection during a full-day memorabilia sale on August 28, with several of his important hot rods crossing the block during Friday’s sale session. “From start to finish, our experience working with Auctions America was seamless,” said Mr. White following the sale. “Throughout the weekend, I could not get over the quality of people that make up the Auctions America team. Although it was an emotional moment when that last lot was sold,

Marilyn and I were thrilled with the event!” Indiana native Ed Ewing’s collection of 94 eclectic automobiles also attracted strong interest from collectors, spurring numerous heated bidding contests during Saturday’s salon offering. Highlights from Ewing’s collection included a wellequipped and eye-catching 1959 Cadillac Eldorado Biarritz convertible selling for $220,000; a rare 1967 Shelby GT 500 Fastback for $200,000; and a popular 1961

Fiat 500 Jolly for $99,000. Vehicles auctioned from the prominent collections of William Munday and Richard and Linda Kughn also garnered tremendous interest. As part of Auctions America’s continued efforts to give back to the community, a series of vehicles were sold to benefit four worthy causes during the weekend, including the Fort Wayne Base Community Council Military Support Fund; the Darrell Gwynn Foundation; the Auburn Cord Duesenberg Museum in Auburn, Ind.; and the Antique Automobile Club of America (AACA) Museum in Hershey, Pa. “We are proud to support these important organizations that give so much to both the community and the hobby in which we operate,” commented Gould. “Car enthusiasts are among the most generous people in the world. We’re proud to use our international stage to help organizations that enrich the automotive culture and improve the lives of those who serve our country and of those in need.” Mark Lizewskie, executive director of the AACA Museum, added, “We are

Beginning in November, additional days and hours of operation are planned to be added. We look forward to showing you all that Barn Fresh Vintage Market will have to offer! thrilled to have been part of Auctions America’s successful Auburn Fall sale. The event far exceeded our expectations. It’s a wonderful facility that featured a wide variety of vehicles on the block, along with an excellent automobilia sale. The AACA Museum had consigned five of its vehicles to help fund our new permanent Tucker automobile exhibit, each bringing a better-than-expected result!” Beyond the auction, the weekend’s program also featured one of the Midwest’s largest car corrals and swap meets, organized by Carlisle Events. Thousands of sellers were on-site offering restoration items, tools, parts and collectibles, with many vendors quickly selling out; a strong number of cars were also sold within the car corral. Illustrating the continued popularity and draw of the event, vendors represented 31 states. Other popular festivities forming part of this year’s Auburn Fall Collector Car Weekend included helicopter and monster truck rides, a motocross exhibition, and celebrity autograph sessions. In its first social media contest, Auctions America

gave away a 1966 Ford Mustang convertible on the auction block on Sept. 1. Anyone could “like” Auctions America and its sponsors on Facebook or scan the QR code on the yellow convertible parked in front of the auction office with their smart phone app. Auctions America continues its 2013 calendar of events with the company’s Fall Carlisle sale, Thursday and Friday, Oct. 3 and 4, in Carlisle, Pa. Kicking off the 2014 season is Auctions America’s well-established Fort Lauderdale sale, Friday to Sunday, March 14 to 16. Now in its 12th year, the sale has carved a reputation as South Florida’s premier collector car auction. The company will return to the historic Auburn Auction Park on Thursday through Saturday, May 8 to 10, 2014, for its annual Auburn Spring Collector Car Weekend, once again featuring the AACA’s Central Division National Spring Meet. There will also be an assortment of jewelry, linens and dolls, along with many other collectibles. “It’s a wide variety of vendors,” said show organizer John Angstadt, who noted that there is an increase in the number of interested sellers each year. “As of the middle of August, we have all our spaces currently filled and

have a waiting list to participate,” Angstadt said. “We’ve had a tremendous response this year.” Vendors will fan out from Lincoln Square in downtown Gettysburg along Carlisle, Chambersburg, Baltimore and York streets. The event will be held rain or shine. The proceeds from the semiannual show benefit the activities of the Gettysburg Area Retail Merchants Association.
