Collection Of Antique Gameboards Gifted To The American Folk Art Museum

Works On View As Part Of New Exhibition

The American Folk Art Museum at 2 Lincoln Square, Columbus Avenue at West 65th Street, in New York City, is pleased to announce a gift of gameboards and photographs from the collection of Bruce and Doranna Wendel. Works from the gift will be presented in the exhibition “Playing With Design: Gameboards, Art, and Culture,” which will feature over 100 gameboards from the Wendels’ collection through Jan. 26, 2025.

Included in the gift are early examples of classic games of Parcheesi, checkers, and chess, as well as handpainted iterations of Monopoly and Chutes and Ladders, made in the United States between the mid-19th and early-20th centuries. All gameboards and a selection of photographs showcasing gameplaying from the gift will be on view in “Playing With Design,” celebrating the aesthetic beauty of these handmade objects and the greater cultural meaning behind them.

Curated by Emelie Gevalt, curatorial chair for collections and curator of folk art at the American Folk Art Museum (AFAM), this show marks the second time the Wendels’ gameboard collection has been on view at AFAM, following the 1984-85 exhibition “Winning

Moves: Painted Gameboards of North America.”

“We are absolutely thrilled to welcome selections from Doranna and Bruce’s stunning and impressive gameboard collection into the museum’s collection and galleries,” said Jason T. Busch, the museum’s Becky and Bob Alexander Director & CEO. “Exploring the historical significance and artistry behind homemade gameboards provides us with a deeper understanding of our shared experiences.”

Zook Dioramas

Take The Stage

Three-Dimensional Artwork To Be Sold At PA Auction Center On Sept. 28

A large artwork auction featuring Aaron and Abner Zook three-dimensional dioramas will take place at PA Auction Center on Saturday, Sept. 28, at 6 p.m. The facility is located at 1141 Wea Wit St., East Earl Pa. This will be the largest amount of 3D artwork by the late Amish artists ever sold. There will be 22 sold with no reserve. The sale features a portion of the collection of James Binsberger, an avid collector of Zook’s work. Binsberger will still retain one of the largest collections of Zook’s artwork. Aaron Zook (1921-2003) and Abner Zook (1921-2010) were identical twins and visual artists. The two of them produced well over 1,000 elaborate sculptural

Cowden & Wilcox Crock With Deer Decoration Brings $64,800

On Aug. 30, Conestoga Auction Company, a division of the Hess Auction Group, sold a ca. 1865 three-gallon stoneware Cowden & Wilcox crock with a deer in profile for $64,800. The prancing eightpoint buck in cobalt is an unusual decoration for the prolific Harrisburg pottery operation.

In 2016, Crocker Farm sold a C&W four-gallon crock, slightsided versus slightly bulbous, with a deer in profile for $13,800. It had restoration.

The auction record for C&W stoneware was set 10 years ago in 2014, when Crocker Farm sold

The Collection Of The Late Mr. Jay Moyer Comes To Auction

Conestoga Auction Company To Hold Sale On Sept. 28

Conestoga Auction Co., a division of the Hess Auction Group in Manheim, Pa., is honored to offer a great selection of items from the collection of the late Jay Moyer of Montgomery County, Pa.

Moyer was a public servant and former member of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives. He was also a proud descendant of Mennonite and Schwenkfelder immigrants, who arrived on ships such as the “Good Ship Friendship,” which docked in the City

of Philadelphia in 1729. Jay’s ancestor, Hans Christian Meyer, along with other early settlers from what is today Switzerland and Germany, finally settled and helped to form the Township of Lower Salford in 1741, formerly part of the County of Philadelphia.

Because of his Pennsylvania German heritage, Moyer became particularly interested in the items used in the daily lives of the Pennsylvania German settlers, their pottery, iron, textiles, painted furniture,

wood carvings and, of course, their fraktur. In fact, Martin Gottschall, one of Pennsylvania’s most important fraktur artists, along with his brother Samuel, were schoolmasters at the small one-room schoolhouse adjacent to the Salford Mennonite Church in Lower Salford Township, where many of Moyer’s earliest ancestors are buried. Moyer loved attending auctions and did so for more than 50 years. He made numerous friendships and acquaintances in the collecting community.

This single-owner sale will be offered live on Saturday, Sept. 28, beginning at 9 a.m. Conestoga Auction Company is located at 768 Graystone Road, Manheim, Pa.

It will also be offered on Live Auctioneers and HiBid for live bidding. For further details, visit www.hess auctiongroup.com.

Witman Auctioneers Pleased To Announce Lee Jackson Collection Coming To Auction

Lee Jackson is from Lancaster, Pa. Following service in the Army upon being drafted in 1968, Jackson came home and started in business in Willow Street in 1974. He went on to a couple of other jobs, one being an Amoco dealer in Roherstown in the 1970s, and another working at Jackson’s Auto Sales from 1986 to 1999. He bought the Old Landisville Fire Station in Landisville and started to specialize in Corvettes. After 50-plus years in business, Jackson decided to retire from this business, but he remains active and is still drag racing.

Jackson has now decided to start selling his amazing collection of cars and accessories. The following is a small list of some of the items

from his vast collection he has asked Witman Auctioneers Inc. to sell for him. This online auction ends Monday, Sept. 30.

Among the items is a 1967 Corvette Stingray Convertible

L79 four-speed with two-tops, side pipes, and matching numbers. A large amount of Corvette parts and accessories are in the sale, from original front chrome bumpers

Collector Chats With Peter S. Seibert

This Week: So Where Are The Buyers?

I have to confess that I have been in a deep funk. The antiques market seems to have slowed down, particularly as it relates to retail customers. Yes, I have heard of strong auction prices being paid and I also have had reports of antiques

shows doing well in some locations. But, that being said, I have also seen lots of 20-, 30and 50-percent off signs in antique malls and shops across the Mid-Atlantic and up into New England. I have also heard stories about long-established shops closing and dealers selling their wares at auction. For those of us who have been around a few rodeos, presidential election years are never super strong selling times. People are holding their discretionary income a little tight waiting for things to change. By spring of next year, we will have a new president, and the market may be back. This connection between politics and antiques has always been known. Many

years ago, dealers in southeastern Pennsylvania and Maryland would pray for a Republican Congress. It seemed that Republican buyers always liked to spend lots of money decorating their new D.C. homes with early Americana. The antiques shows in York, Chester County, and Wilmington would always do well in that period. Today, that thinking may not be as true as it once was. Differing tastes and the prevalence of Moderne in the marketplace makes it harder to ascribe collecting to one party or the other.

Some dealers have been blaming the economic conditions and particularly inflation on the lack of buyers. I have to confess that I don’t see the perfect correlation here that these folks do. Buying antiques is something done by those who have the discretionary cash to use on something that is not needed for survival, meaning that while you might cut the family vacation a bit short to buy a great painting, you probably are not going to give up several meals. So the cash for collecting is not necessarily tied up in paying for the overall costs of living.

To the positive, I am seeing more of a maximalist trend in decorating becoming commonplace, particularly on social media. For a long time, we all suffered through the millennial and Gen Z view that minimalism was the only way to live. A bed, a chair and a jug of wine, to

paraphrase Kahlil Gibran. Now, we are starting to see people abandoning that perspective and think more about a chair, a bed, a rug, several pictures, some knick knacks, and so on.

So what is driving the current downward trend? One little clue that I picked up to perhaps answer this was a business news report that some of the big box home improvement stores were having much softer sales than previous years. The speculation was that people were traveling more and working on their homes less. Over the last few years since Covid, people had been staying home and working around the house more than traveling. This year, people went on the road. Certainly, this was true in many countries who ended up limiting tourists because of the glut of people. Even here in the United States, some national parks had to limit access except by prior

creations often depicting scenes of rural Amish culture. Many of the 3D dioramas are very large and extremely heavy. The Zooks created these primarily in the 1970s and ‘80s, and they are regionally collected. Among the scenes/ depictions to be sold will be Lancaster Central Market, the Soudersburg Covered Bridge, and the Clinton Mill in Clinton, N.J. There will be 13 primary sketches that led to the final three-dimensional artworks by Aaron and Abner Zook and a handcrafted Conestoga Wagon and horse drawn plow by

Joel Zook. Joel was a cousin. Other artists’ work in the sale include Abe Zook, Aaron’s son; Jose Lacera, who worked for Abner; Mary Sensenig; Lorraine Reiff; and Erma Hoover.

The auction record price for an Abner Zook diorama was set in 2020 at a Witman Auctioneers sale when they sold a harbor/shipyard scene for $33,000 signed and dated “Abner Zook/ Womelsdorf, Pa., 1978.”

The auction preview will take place the week prior to the sale from Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

“Playing with Design” is divided into thematic sections that explore ideas of history, culture, design, and craftsmanship within American game-playing. Some examples will evoke the familiarity of contemporary games, while others will give material shape to historical ideals, including morality, religion, patriotism, entrepreneurship and imagination. The gameboards on view will speak to underlying concepts of adventure and risk-taking as fundamental to American life, as seen through games organized around the themes of a train journey, a whaling expedition, or a trip around the world.

“Playing With Design” will also explore the shift toward modernism at the turn of the 20th century, relating the bold, geometric colors of handpainted boards to the work of celebrated painters such as Piet Mondrian, Ellsworth Kelly and Jasper Johns.
