COLLECTOR CHATS WITH PETER S. SEIBERT This Week: The Shop

By Peter Seibert I was out last Sunday on a visit to a local co-op. The dealer on duty and I got into a long conversation about buying at auction. Despite living in rural Virginia, he knew all the major players in the antiques and auction world back in Pennsylvania. We chatted about old friends and auction

houses, past and present. What intrigued me the most was how he ran the circuit of auction houses even to the present day. He was a fulltime dealer who specialized in only a few specific lines of merchandise. He purchased many items at various houses and then would ask them to hold the items until he could swing back through and collect them to replenish his shop stock. The item that I bought clearly came from one of the regional auction houses in Pennsylvania, and with a little detective work I am pretty sure I could pin it down to the specific Conestoga sale where he

bought it originally. He made a good profit from me, but that was okay. I missed the auction, and it would be many months before I got back into Pennsylvania again, so I was fine with the price paid. The dealer was part of the new world of auction buying. He used the most powerful tool of all, his computer, to identify and bid on items. Some auction houses, which played fast and loose with auction bidding, were forever banned from his business. Others, he was devoted to and would buy online at all of their sales. This reminded me of an auction that I attended last year. Most lots went

online, and I noted that a number of familiar dealers were absent. To my mind, it was very clear that the dealers were all bidding online. This widespread buying of antiques is wonderful, but it is difficult for those of us who like to acquire regional arts. In the past, one might go into a small shop and be assured that much of it came from sales within a day’s trip. I often thought one could do a book on Empire chests of drawers and one-drawer stands solely based upon going to local country antique shops. With internet buying, even a small town can be part

of the global market. I recall some years ago purchasing a group of medals via the internet from a pawnshop in Paris, France. They belonged to a French Foreign Legion soldier who I suspect had been mustered out of the legion and sold his medals. I sold them at a co-op in Pennsylvania, and they were purchased by a Belgian collector who took them back to Europe - proof that the global economy can come full circle. So it was a quiet and fun afternoon for me talking to the dealer. I love the Pennsylvania piece that I got that day. More importantly, I

enjoyed the stories of dealers, shops and auctions that revealed how small the collecting world really is.

Peter Seibert, a native Pennsylvanian, grew up in the antiques business and remains closely tied to auction houses, collectors, and dealers. Professionally, he has served as museum director and public historian in Pennsylvania, New Mexico and Virginia. He holds an M.A. in American Studies from Penn State and has authored two books and numerous articles on decorative arts, interior design, and history.

“Antique New England Homes And Barns: History, Restoration, And Reinterpretation” New Book Released By Schiffer Publishing Schiffer Publishing Ltd. is pleased to announce the release of “Antique New England Homes and Barns: History, Restoration, and Reinterpretation” by Jim DeStefano, P.E., AIA, F.SEI. There is something about antique homes and their hardworking barns that captures the imagination. Maybe it’s

their pleasing proportions, maybe they remind us of a simpler time, or maybe we sense that these venerable old survivors that were built when our country was young have seen it all. But how many of us have bothered to listen to the stories they tell or tried to understand what makes them tick? This book reveals the essence of antique New England homes and barns - their history, the people who built them, why they were built that way, and how to restore them, piece by piece, without losing their character. Learn to identify architectural styles from different periods, how to strategize a restoration, and how to approach it systematically, from the timber frame to the floors,

Alderfer Auction Continued from page 1

Allentown Art Museum and Baum School of Art. He created the Bucks County Traveling Art Gallery, teaching art appreciation to area schools. He was a very prolific artist over four decades, with more than 2,000 works to his credit in oils, tempera, watercolor, and pastel. Baum painted country and village scenes of Bucks and Lehigh Counties, as well as, urban town streets of eastern

Pennsylvania. He was responsible for expanding the Impressionist movement out of Bucks County and into Lehigh County, where it continued to flourish into the 1940s-50s. This Lehigh Valley group became known as the “Baum Circle. Impressionism started to fade out of style in the ’50s, giving way to modernism and abstract art. It has regained popularity in recent decades, however, as evidenced by auction sales of art in this style.

antiquesandauctionnews.net W.E. Baum (as he signed most of his works) continues to attract collectors, both regionally as well as across the country. In November of 2007, “The Pink House sold for $73,000, and in December of that year, “April Spring Day sold at Alderfer’s for $54,625. More recently, “Helfrich Springs sold for $8,000 (December 2015), and “Main sold for $4,000 (December 2016), both at Alderfer’s. In addition to Walter Baum, this sale will include

The Museum of Early Southern Decorative Arts (MESDA) is presenting a fall seminar titled “Good, Better, Best: Collecting for the 21st Century on Friday and Saturday, Oct. 13 and 14. The seminar will take place at MESDA at 924 S. Main St. in Winston-Salem, N.C. Many of the world’s finest collections began with the desire for a single object. Passion for the hunt often begins in childhood with building collections of stamps, rocks, baseball cards, or coins. Attendees will have a chance to rekindle that inspiration at MESDA’s upcoming seminar, “Good, Better, Best: Collecting for the 21st Century. They will learn to discover valuable and “not so valuable objects from experts who have advised collectors and museums for decades. Participants will hear anecdotes from collectors and share their own. Attendees will take part in a number of hands-on sessions with curators and recognized experts utilizing MESDA’s renowned collection of southern decorative arts. Featured presenters for this seminar are as follows: Ken Farmer, a lifelong resident of Virginia, began his professional career as a dealer in Americana and operated two regional auction houses from 1990 to 2015. Farmer is an advisor, appraiser, and auctioneer, handling all categories of fine and decorative art. He has appeared on the PBS series “Antiques Roadshow as a specialist in folk art, furniture, and musical instruments. He currently provides appraisal and advisory services to public and private clients, establishing personal relationships and helping clients choose wisely when deciding to buy or sell. Wes Cowan used to take respite from the grind of school by driving back roads, stopping at the many antique stores of the day. A collector since early childhood, he began collecting the only thing he could afford: photographs of 19th-century America. After a short time in academia, he joined the Cincinnati Museum of Natural History as curator of archaeology. In his spare time, Cowan was soon buying, selling, and trading with collectors and

Corning Museum Of Glass To Present First Major Exhibition Dedicated To Tiffany’s Glass Mosaics The first exhibition to explore Louis C. Tiffany’s glass mosaics, an extraordinary but little-known aspect of his artistic production, is being presented by The Corning Museum of Glass (CMoG) through Jan. 7, 2018. “Tiffany’s Glass Mosaics,” organized jointly by CMoG and The Neustadt Collection of Tiffany Glass, will combine works from both collections with important loans and specially designed digital displays to reveal how Tiffany’s mosaics reflected his studio’s artistry and innovation. This is the first time that a broad range of Tiffany’s mosaics and prepatory materials have been displayed together. The exhibition will feature nearly 50 works dating from the 1890s to the 1920s,

undertaken by Tiffany’s firm, which popularized this technique in the United States.” Visitors will have a chance to explore the process behind the creation of Tiffany’s mosaics, from the beginning when detailed watercolor studies were presented to the client, to the creation of small sample panels used to guide glass selection for specific commissions. CMoG will bring to life the atmosphere of Tiffany’s workrooms with largescale murals of historic photos and a rich display of extant Tiffany glass drawn from The Neustadt’s collection. The exhibition will include racks of Tiffany’s sheet glass and a 16by-4-foot worktable that features remarkable examples in an extraordinary array of color

showrooms and clever, gorgeous displays of the company’s mosaics at world’s fairs, coupled with strategic marketing, sparked consumer interest and drove demand for glass mosaic luxury objects.” Because many of Tiffany’s most important mosaics are still installed in their original settings, CMoG’s photography team visited 12 locations in New York state, Philadelphia, Baltimore, and Chicago to capture detailed shots of these artworks. This exciting new photography will be presented in an immersive “Mosaic Theater,” a gallery in the exhibition that will use high-definition monitors to transport visitors to the various mosaic sites. They will be able to experience these mosaics up close and at eye level, in their original architectural settings,

and in stunning detail, providing the opportunity for heightened appreciation of the design, glass selection, and craftsmanship. Artworks have been generously loaned by private collectors as well at the Chrysler Museum of Art, Haworth Art Gallery, Kalamazoo Institute of Arts, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Charles Hosmer Morse Museum of American Art, the Museum of Modern Art, The Rockwell Museum, and the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts. Demonstrations and Activities Accompanying the exhibition will be hot glass demonstrations focusing on the creation of patterns and textures used in Tiffany’s mosaic designs. “With the curators, Kelly Conway and Lindsy Parrott, we studied some of the glass in The Neustadt’s archive and determined that the surface finishes and color

Architectural mosaics still in situ will be presented in a specially created “Mosaic Theater,” in which multiple high-definition monitors will showcase CMoG’s exciting new photography of these works. “We are thrilled to partner with The Neustadt Collection of Tiffany Glass on this groundbreaking exhibition. Thanks to the expertise of both of our teams, this important aspect of Tiffany’s work is finally able to be explored in a meaningful way,” said Karol Wight, president and executive director of CMoG. “The history of glass mosaics extends back more than 3,000 years, and the permanent collection at CMoG is the perfect backdrop for contextualizing the work

watch the Hot Glass Demo Team make patterned glass like Tiffany might have requested for a mosaic commission. The team will blow cylindrical vessels, flatten them, and then cut out specific sections. A display in the Amphitheater Hot Shop will tell the story of the process used to make the murrine flowers for The Dream Garden mosaic. Murrine refers to patterns or images made in glass cane that are revealed when cut into cross-sections. In the exhibition, visitors can select portions of a mosaic at an easel, just like glass selectors at Tiffany’s studios, or they participate in the Make Your Own Glass experience to create a mosaic to take home. Visitors will be able to piece together their choice of iridescent, translucent, or opaque glass pieces to create a Tiffanyinspired butterfly mosaic, which The Studio will then fuse together. (Additional fee). Classes at The Studio and the Annual Seminar on Glass at CMoG in the fall of 2017 will also focus on Tiffany’s glass mosaics. Publication “Tiffany’s Glass Mosaics” will be accompanied by a new publication presenting the most comprehensive documentation and analysis of Tiffany’s glass mosaics to date. The volume advances scholarship in the field and offers new perspectives for readers at all
