Kempton Antiques Show To Be Held Oct. 14
By Karl Pass
The anticipated 9th Annual Kempton Antiques Show will be held Saturday, Oct. 14. This quality show is presented by the Antiques Dealers Association of Berks County (ADABC) and takes place at the Kempton Community Center, located at 83 Community Center Drive in Kempton, Pa. Kempton is a rural northern Berks County town roughly between Allentown and Hamburg, north of Route 78. The
location is ideal for collectors and dealers in the Lehigh Valley, as well as northern New Jersey.
The well-lit and newly renovated community center is a great place for a show, and dealers will showcase a full variety of merchandise such as Pennsylvania country furniture; textiles including quilts, hooked rugs, coverlets, and samplers; pottery such as redware, stoneware, and Staffordshire china; vintage toys of tin, wood, and celluloid; metalware such as pewter, wrought and cast-iron, and tin; along with folk carvings, baskets, illustration art, Native American rugs and jewelry, Asian arts, estate jewelry, art glass, old books and historical documents, and much more.
The range of items is extensive, and this is
a dealer-friendly show known for having high quality material. It is among the best one-day shows, with items priced to sell. Great discoveries are found every year. Show hours will be from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Food will be available.

A stunning display of Tiffany lamps will light up the galleries at the Muskegon Museum of Art this fall. Recently opened, “Tiffany Lamps: The Richard H. Driehaus Collection” is an exhibition that features the famed glass lamps, stained glass windows, and more from the height of Tiffany Studios and will be up until Jan. 14, 2024.
The Tiffany Glass Company began producing lamps around 1895 and focused primarily on making stained glass lampshades, windows, and mosaics until the early 1900s. As the company grew, it also began producing ceramics, jewelry, and decorative home objects.
American Artist Louis Comfort Tiffany designed many of the windows and glass lampshades; however, a group of women known as the “Tiffany Girls” designed the company’s most iconic, natureinspired designs, including the
Wisteria and Dragonfly patterns.
“The Tiffany Lamps: The Richard H. Driehaus Collection” show will highlight the history of the Tiffany Glass Company and the “Tiffany Girls.” The exhibition combines the museum’s Tiffany glass and lamp collection with the Richard H. Driehaus Collection of stained glass windows and lamps in an impressive display of the beauty and elegance of Tiffany design.
Artwork for the “Tiffany Lamps: The Richard H. Driehaus Collection” is graciously loaned through the Richard H. Driehaus Art Exhibition Lending Foundation. The museum is in Muskegon, Mich.
Special events and programming related to the Tiffany Lamps exhibition will be announced on the Muskegon Museum of Art’s website. To learn more, visit www.muskegonartmuseum.org.

Collector Anecdotes And Antics
Publications On Antiques And Collectibles Still Matter In The Digital Age
era it is now a common practice. Some would go as far to say that we have the Overstreet Comic Book Price Guide to thank for the fact that so many comic book collectors exist today.
By Shawn Surmick
Some people look forward to the summer months for warm weather and to be able to spend time at the beach. I’m more of a fan of the autumn and winter months, but I look forward to the summer months because comic book collectors like myself are christened with the yearly Overstreet Comic Book Price Guide. The guide, which is sometimes called the “Bible” by those in the comic book collecting community, first premiered in November 1970 when Robert M. Overstreet saw a need for a yearly price guide to be produced that catered to the comic book collecting community.
Back then, comic book collecting was still in its infancy, and some of the most popular comic book characters had not even been created at the time of its release. The first appearance of Wolverine, The Punisher, and even the Swamp Thing would all make their debut years after the first appearance of the very first guide book. Yes, it can be said that the Overstreet Comic Book Price Guide is older than some of Marvel Comics’ most popular characters (looking at you Wolverine, Venom, and the Punisher). This is one of the many reasons that comic books from the 1970s and later are on average much more plentiful than their earlier counterparts. People have been saving and preserving comic books for many decades, and in the modern
Over the years, the guide had experimented with several different formats and content changes, but the core of the publication was always to serve as a price guide for most mainstream comic books. The guide was considered vital during the late 1980s and early 1990s when contemporary comic books experienced a massive speculator boom that coincided with the premiere of Tim Burton’s 1989 “Batman” movie, based on the comic book of the same name. In 1994, Overstreet made the controversial decision to sell his business to Gemstone Publishing. He did, however, stay on as the author, which elicited sighs of relief from fans and enthusiasts alike, who had long respected his ability to set values within the guide fairly and accurately.
Today, the internet has started to replace a lot of the yearly pricing publications in the trade. Most collectors and dealers turn to the internet to find current and accurate pricing information for the items they choose to collect. Visit any bookstore, and you can see this trend in action. The shelf space devoted to books on antiques and collectibles has been shrinking year after year. Still, the mainstay guides that make up the trade like Kovels’ Antiques and Collectibles Price Guide and the yearly Official Redbook Guide to United States Coins are still going strong. Most of these price guides have added excellent market commentary by insiders in the trade to make the information they provide remain relevant. Obviously in the internet era with the advent of 24/7 online auctions, pricing changes at the speed of light. It is in this capacity where the Overstreet
Comic Book Price Guide really shines. Every edition of this publication features multiple pages of commentary from some of the top dealers, collectors, and auction houses that make up the trade. And while some of this information can be considered biased due to it being written by enthusiasts in the trade, a lot of it is valuable to the hardcore collector, especially if he or she is considering spending four
figures or more on a comic book. There is no denying that the internet has played a

Announcing Launch Of AGS, New Independent Grading And Authentication Service
AGS Serves Antique Advertising
In any business or industry, information is the most valuable commodity. That certainly holds true in the antiques, art and vintage collectibles world, where authenticity and knowing accurate market values are essential to any transaction. As the insatiable demand for sports cards and memorabilia, coins, and vintage comic books continues to grow at an exponential rate, collectors, investors and auction houses increasingly are turning to independent services whose specialists can provide accurate grading and authentication of their items. This trend is what has led a group of prominent and well-respected experts in the field of antique advertising to launch a new company known as Authentication and Grading Services, or AGS.
AGS’s principals include Dan Morris, founder of the Cedartown Museum of
Coca-Cola Memorabilia in Georgia, and John Mihovetz, who is known throughout the automobilia and petroliana hobby as head of Automobilia and Petroliana at Morphy Auctions. Morris assumes the post of president and will manage day-to-day operations and the Coca-Cola/soda pop division at AGS, while Mihovetz, who serves as founding CEO, will oversee all activities pertaining to gas and oil collectibles. AGS also takes pride in announcing its board of advisers, which includes CocaCola, soda pop and general antique advertising dealer Gary Metz, and Carter and Irene Davis, who are widely regarded as pioneers in the field of country store advertising.
AGS offers three tiers of service to its customers: authentication, authentication plus grading, and a top tier that includes authentication,

Wide Selection Of 20th Century Pottery From North Carolina Found In
New
England
A Brief Examination Of Asian-Influenced Pottery From Jugtown Pottery
By Justin W. Thomas
Last year, I purchased a 20th century Chinese-inspired blue glazed earthenware vase from North Carolina at a John McInnis estate auction at the Masonic Hall in downtown Newburyport, Mass. The vase was a part of a large collection of antiques that came from a single-owner estate sale in Georgetown, Mass. I did not pay much for the unidentified vase, although purchasing this object gave me an idea for which I have devoted more than a year of some of my time with my niece, Alexis, scouring antique shops and flea markets throughout New England and the Northeast, looking for North Carolina pottery.
My goal was to learn about the material based on what we found, a subject I initially knew little about, although my reasoning behind this was that I knew a large amount of North Carolina pottery was shipped to the Northeast in the early 1900s. In the early years of production, mainly in the 1920s, it was sold through a shop in Manhattan, and later, by way of another store in Cambridge, Mass. As a result, a variety of objects made in North Carolina migrated to households in New England and New York, ca. 1920s to the 1960s.
In 1921, Jacques (1870-1947) and Juliana Busbee (1876-1962) established Jugtown Pottery near Seagrove in Moore County, N.C. By all accounts, the Busbees, who moved to the area from Raleigh, N.C., saved the Moore County pottery industry from extinction.
Jacques Busbee had studied art and design in New York City. His wife, a photographer and illustrator, had actively promoted folk crafts as chair of the art department of the Federation of
Women’s Clubs of North Carolina.
The Busbees collected local pottery and promoted Moore County potteries. They searched the area for examples of early traditional designs.
For several years, the Busbees gave orders to local potters, including Ben Owen Sr. (1904-83), and shipped some of the wares to New York City, where they marketed the pottery at a tearoom in Greenwich Village operated by Juliana Busbee. To exert greater control over design
and finish, the Busbees built the potters’ shop, known as Jugtown, and hired and trained young potters to preserve the traditional shapes and glazes. Several Jugtown trainees later started their own potteries in the Jugtown community.
Jacques Busbee most admired the primitive and early periods of Chinese, Japanese and Korean pottery, and at Jugtown he introduced translations of Asian ceramics, which is where he

These are four Chinese-inspired blue glazed vases made in North Carolina. The small vase shown to the left in the front was found at a John McInnis estate auction in 2022. The larger vases were modeled after objects manufactured during the Han Dynasty in China. The vase shown to the back left retains a partial price tag, possibly the original price tag for when it was sold in New York City in the 1920s or 1930s.
A Reel Rarity: The World’s First Movie Poster Premieres In Heritage’s Event Packed With Cinema Marvels
Lumière Brothers’ 1895 Beauty Joins Spectacular Finds In Sept. 30 Sale
Often the most wanted thing in the collecting world is the first of its kind, such as the first edition of Chaucer’s “The Canterbury Tales,” Mickey Mantle’s rookie card, a leather log book from the first moon landing, Issue #1 of the “Superman” comic book.
Ever-popular as collectibles, vintage original movie posters have been a bit cursed with the problem that their firsts are so elusive. The
first real public narrative movie screening took place in Paris in 1895; it featured the Lumière brothers’ comedy short “L’Arroseur Arrosé (The Waterer Watered).” True to this golden age of Belle Époque illustration and advertising art, the event was promoted by a massive, gorgeous poster that featured an enthusiastic audience enjoying this particular movie and this startling new kind of entertainment.
The prolific ad artist Marcellin Auzolle was its creator. As noted by the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA): “Auzolle’s poster depicts an audience watching the comedy ‘L’Arroseur Arrosé’ and evokes the lively energy associated with the first public screening of Lumière films on Dec. 28, 1895, at the Grand Café in Paris. The program featured ten short films, projected at a scale of around 6.5-by-9 feet. The audience appears just as animated as the filmed performers, gesturing, laughing, and enjoying the collective experience.”
In a first of firsts, on Saturday, Sept. 30, Heritage Auctions will be the first auction house to offer this first movie poster to the public, as it leads a sweeping Movie Posters Signature Auction packed with other remarkable pieces of cinema history.
There were actually two posters designed for the Lumière event: The other design, by Henri Brispot, features a crowd of people waiting to enter the screening, and that poster sold at Sotheby’s in 2018 for six figures. That one has its charms, but for his design the canny Auzolle instead chose to depict the thrill of the movie-watching experience, men and women, boys and girls (and a happy theater attendant) laughing heartily at a screen flickering with the image of a wayward kid playing a simple prank on a gardener (who happened to be played by the Lumières’ actual gardener François Clerc).
Auguste and Louis Lumière were, of course, cinema pioneers: This was the first time film was used to portray a fictional story, as well as the first comedy—the 49-second short is model slapstick. This original Auzolle poster, 128 years
old and more than 5 feet wide, is in remarkable condition. Its colors are rich, autumnal and gemlike, its lines are clean, its smartly-dressed audience figures are alive with raucous appreciation for what’s unfolding in front of them in contrasting black and white. This is, in other words, the first movie poster to show the film it’s promoting. It comes to Heritage via Dominique Besson of Paris.
“This poster is one of the first I bought over 40 years ago and is therefore from my personal collection,” said Besson. “It was folded in the archives of a person whose

This lobby card from Fritz Lang’s 1927 masterpiece “Metropolis” is the only known example of this card.
Heritage
Continued
grandfather had worked with the Lumière brothers. As you could see, it had remained folded since the origin, nearly 130 years.”
Prior to this moment in motion-picture history, any promotional material for an event to show off the new film technology depicted the technology rather than any individual film, or ads for the nonnarrative titles were often simply text. Our very definition of what makes a movie a real movie, and a real poster a real movie poster, is here in this remarkably preserved Lumière-Auzolle moment, this uniquely beautiful artifact of the modern movie-going experience.
“We are privileged to handle such an important piece of cultural history,” states Zach Pogemiller, Heritage’s associate director of Movie Posters. “This poster represents the birth of an entirely new genre of public art, one that continues to captivate and inspire the public worldwide. The Cinématographe Lumière French grande marks both the birth of the movie industryand poster collecting.”
This first movie poster is merely one exceptional offering in a Heritage event teeming with rarities. So much of the material from cinema’s earliest days are lost to time, so when beautiful examples of primary industry art surface, collectors pay attention. Such is the case with the lobby card from Fritz Lang’s 1927 masterpiece “Metropolis.” Itis the only known example of this
card. The scene image, depicting Maria’s robot double leading a crowd of underworld workers in revolt, is original and unmarred. The first U.S. release material on this title is so rare that a complete lobby card set for “Metropolis” has yet to surface in the collecting community.
Promotional materials in the early horror and science fiction genres continue to dominate the collector market. An ultra-rare jumbo lobby card for 1931’s “Dracula,” directed by Todd Browning and starring Bela Lugosi, has been offered only once before in a long-ago auction, and it casts a spell over audiences with its depiction of darkness and desire. From another Lugosi classic, the “Son of Frankenstein” half sheet marks only the second time Heritage has offered this style from Lugosi’s last monster appearance in 1939, and the truly remarkable complete press book for “The Bride of Frankenstein” is a heart-stopping find. The cover glows with images of Boris Karloff, Valerie Hobson and Elsa Lanchester; the back cover is filled with examples of the near-vanished large format posters that were available upon release. The internal pages cover everything from advance and current publicity articles to the full range of lobby displays and additional posters that include the impressive sixsheet format. A genre collector’s Holy Grail.
In this event Heritage also offers a bounty of vintage creations from the world of James Bond releases, including from 007’s debut in
“Dr. No” via a striking British quad with artwork by Mitchell Hooks and David Chasman, replete with the very special agent and all his ladies, long considered superior to its American counterpart. An acetate lightbox one sheet poster for “Thunderball” marks Sean Connery’s fourth turn as Bond and was meant to be displayed with a backlight source. It beautifully illuminates Frank McCarthy and Robert McGinnis’ iconic artwork depicting 007 in his adventures fighting S.P.E.C.T.R.E.
And continuing the lobbycard love in this auction are an ultra-rare, unrestored lobby card for 1933’s “The Invisible Man,” complete lobby card sets for 1938’s “The Adventures of Robin Hood” (in beautiful condition with a linen finish), and a mint set for “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs” illustrated by the great Disney favorite Gustaf Tenggren. It is in time-capsule condition.

This ultra-rare jumbo lobby card for 1931’s “Dracula,” directed by Todd Browning and starring Bela Lugosi, has been offered only once before at auction.
Auguste and Louis Lumière were cinema pioneers. This was the first time film was used to portray a fictional story and the first comedy. The original Auzolle poster, 128 years old and more than 5 feet wide, is in remarkable condition and dates to 1895.
Pottery
developed a Chinese blue glaze, largely based on objects that he had seen displayed at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. Under his influence, the Jugtown potters produced a great number of utilitarian and decorative pieces in a wide variety of glazes.
Furthermore, Nancy Sweezy (1921-2010), who was an author and folklorist from Concord, N.H., studied at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. During WWII, she worked overseas in the Research and Analysis Branch of the Office of Strategic Services (OSS). Her interest in craft began with pottery lessons in New England in the 1950s. She worked in partnership with Ralph Rinzler and helped manage Club 47 (now Club Passim) in Cambridge, Mass., where she served as president of the board. She and Ralph, along with Norman Kennedy and others, formed Country Roads Inc. in 1966 to support folk arts educational projects, research, and marketing. The projects included a country store that was opened in Cambridge, which sold pottery from Jugtown, the Meaders family in Georgia, the Cole family in North Carolina, pottery from Bybee, Ky., along with other southern potteries and many Appalachian handcrafts. Sweezy and her group also purchased the Jugtown Pottery in 1968, and she moved to North Carolina to direct the operation and work with traditional potters in the area, later moving back to Boston in the 1980s.
Based on this information that the Busbees and Sweezy were shipping North Carolina pottery to the Northeast, Alexis and I spent time searching New England and New York to see what we could find. Our most prized objects are three variations of Han Dynasty vases from China that were made by Ben Owen Sr. in the 1920s and 1930s, two of which are decorated in a Chinese blue glaze, while the third is adorned in a Dogwood white glaze. The white glaze was inspired from both Chinese and Japanese design, which won Owen a prestigious award in 1928.
Nevertheless, a notable characteristic on one of the Chinese blue glazed Han vases that we found along the New Hampshire seacoast is the remains of an old price tag, and perhaps the original price tag for when it was sold in Manhattan.
We also found a rare, ca. 1920s bowl or bell vase from Jugtown in Rowley, Mass., which, according to the Jugtown Pottery Museum, “Jugtown also has one of these early bowls in our museum. It is glazed in white with wonderful copper (most likely copper, chrome can render a similar color) decoration, brushed quickly and skillfully. It has grooves, made possibly with a finger or knuckle, while the pot was still turning on the treadle wheel. It also traveled north early in the 1900s before returning home. Jacques Busbee was very drawn to Asian design. This piece is unusual; who made it and who decorated it? We do not have a definitive answer yet, but we are so

happy to see another one.”
Another object that we were excited to find in Portsmouth, N.H., was a large, vibrant glazed earthenware pitcher impressed with a circular mark on the base, reading, “A.R. Cole Pottery Sanford, N.C.” Arthur Ray (A. R.) Cole (1892-1974) operated his first pottery shop in 1926 in Steeds, N.C. (near Seagrove), but in 1934, opened Rainbow Pottery in Sanford to be on the main North-South highway at the time, U.S. Route 1. In 1941, he began operating as A. R. Cole Pottery of Sanford. Additionally, we were told that this pitcher retained a local history of ownership, where it resided on a mantle for decades in an old house in downtown Portsmouth.
Overall, though, we have found dozens of good examples of 20th century North Carolina pottery scattered throughout the Northeast region, many of which are adorned in outstanding glazes and even some examples that are marked on the base with the names of early pottery manufacturers from the 1920s-40s. A number of these objects also certainly migrated to the region through the stores owned in New York and Massachusetts by the Busbees and Sweezy.

A 20th century earthenware urn or vase most likely made by either Jonah Owen or Charlie Craven in Smithfield, Johnson County, N.C., ca. 1930s, found in southern Maine.
This large 20th-century North Carolina urn or floor vase was found in N.H.
Two Dogwood white Chinese-inspired vases from North Carolina, the bowl or bell vase is one of only a few known; a matching example is owned by the Jugtown Pottery Museum in Seagrove, N.C. grading and current-market valuation. “The highest level would be of particular interest to anyone who wants to make sure their collection is adequately insured,” said Morris. As part of the service, each item is inspected and assigned a custom-printed sticker showing its assigned grade and a unique QR code. In addition, each customer receives a full-color certificate bearing a photo of their item and its grading information.
The company implements a grading scale of 1 to 100 in which every aspect of an item is
assigned a number and those numbers then combine to produce the final overall grade. “It’s a scientific, mathematical approach,” said Morris. “If an item is graded 92 out of 100, the owner of the item will know exactly how that grade was achieved. Our goal is total transparency, and this will be a clear, accurate system of grading.” AGS also employs a cutting-edge Niton XRF Analyzer gun that assists in verifying the authenticity and originality of items.
Prices for the company’s services are standardized and based on the AGS-assessed value of a given item. For entire
collections, a single fee applies and is determined on a caseby-case basis.
Primarily but not exclusively, the categories of advertising assessed by AGS include soda pop, automobilia and petroliana, country store, tobacciana and breweriana. To have items authenticated and/or graded, customers can either bring their pieces to AGS at its Lancaster County, Pa., location, ship them to AGS for authentication and return shipment, or take them to any antique show or auction where the AGS team is set up. Special arrangements can be made to accommodate any client who wants their entire collection to be evaluated in situ at their home, office or other location.
The first major collection to be graded and AGS-stickered
will be the Bobby Knudsen Jr. Automobilia, Petroliana and Soda Pop advertising collection. “We’ve started at the highest caliber of the hobby with the Knudsen collection,” observed Mihovetz. “The first two installments of Bobby’s collection sold at Morphy’s for a combined $6.1 million, and five lots sold for an aggregate total of more than $2 million. Prices like that are what convinced the founders of AGS that there was a need for our services in the antique advertising marketplace.” The third sale of the collection will be held Friday, Sept. 29, at Morphy’s.
Most vintage advertising is composed of either paper, card stock, porcelain or tin. All are types of materials that the AGS team is unquestionably capable of authenticating, grading and valuing. Because those same
materials are seen in so many other types of antiques and collectibles, the company will be expanding in the near future to offer its suite of services across many other popular collecting categories.
AGS’s website will go live on Sept. 15. Visitors to the site will be able to scan a QR code or search an item number and see exactly how any given item received its grade. “There will also be a strong social and interactive aspect to the site, which we know collectors are going to love,” followed up Mihovetz.
“Our goal is total transparency, and we’re open to constructive criticism and any ideas (people) may have,” mentioned Morris. “We want for AGS to be an asset to the hobby and look forward to hearing from collectors.”

Pieces By Charles-Jean Avisseau And George Jones Lead The Way
Part One Sale Of The Ed And Marilyn Flower Majolica Collection Held By Strawser Auction Group
Two majolica creations by the French artist Charles-Jean Avisseau sold for a combined $71,340, and a pair of majolica pieces by George Jones together brought $57,455 at the part one sale of the majolica collection of Ed Flower (1929-2022) and his wife, Marilyn (1930-2017), held Aug. 23 in Kulpsville, Pa., by Strawser Auction Group. It was the first of three auctions dedicated to the Flower collection; the dates of part two and three are to be determined. The collection in its entirety comprises over 600 pieces by many of the finest names in all of majolica: Minton, George Jones, Holdcroft, Wedgwood, Hugo Lonitz, Palissy, Massier, T.C. Brown-Westhead Moore & Co., Copelands and others.
“The August 23rd auction was well attended both in-person and online,” said Michael Strawser of Strawser Auction Group, adding, “Many new buyers and collectors bid, and others participated who we hadn’t heard from in a long time.” The Flowers purchased many pieces at Strawser sales over the years.
The surprise lot of the sale was most certainly the “Art of the Earth” Palissy rustic basin by Charles-Jean Avisseau, dated 1856.
The piece blasted through its $2,000-$3,000 estimate to finish at $49,200. Avisseau created a microcosm teeming with life on the surface of the ceramic basin, with shells interspersed alongside a snake, a salamander, and a lizard, each colored with a different ceramic glaze. Avisseau exhibited at the Great Exhibition 1851.
The other piece by Avisseau was also an “Art of the Earth”
example, this one a Palissy grotto, ca. 1856, polychrome, modeled as a naturalistic forest floor scene depicting a snake, lizard and frog climbing on rocks around a watery hole with lilies, ferns and grasses, a gnarled branch and oak leaves to the rear and a tablet to the front inscribed “Avisseau a tours 1856.” The grotto represented the finest quality of 19th century Palissyware. It realized $22,140.
The rare George Jones majolica “Drum” cabaret set from around 1875, one of only two known complete sets, went for $31,625 to take runner-up top lot honors. The set was all designed as cobalt blue drums, with yellow skin tightening string, the teapot
with drumsticks forming the spout, and a military drummer boys’ hat. The circular tray was bound by a leather strap.
Also from George Jones was the only known pair of Tulip and Butterfly candlesticks, ca. 1875, each modeled as an upright tulip and large green leaves forming the body, with a blossom forming the candle holders, a butterfly below on a circular earthy ground. These formed part of a dressing table set, all designed around blossoms and butterflies, and they sold for $25,830.
All prices quoted include a 23percent buyer’s premium. Internet bidding was facilitated by LiveAuctioneers.com. A rare and
monumental Hugo Lonitz majolica model of a hawk, created around 1875, with glass eyes, perched on a rocky ground with ferns and branches on an entwined branch base, 24 inches in height, changed hands for $49,200.
Also, a Minton majolicacobalt teapot, modeled as a flat iron with a frieze of mice to the sides and a large white cat wrapped around the handle looking down at a mouse holding a carrot, 7.5 inches in
The surprise lot of the auction was this “Art of the Earth” Palissy rustic basin by Charles-Jean Avisseau, dated 1856. The piece blew past the $2,000-$3,000 estimate to finish at $49,200.

What makes this fall antique and artisan show so successful? Well, it’s the talented and active dealers and craftspeople, of course. And this year’s line-up of quality vendors will not disappoint. The slogan, “Bring a truck,” isn’t a joke. Shoppers will need one to haul off their goods.
Each year, the line-up of vendors grows, and this year is no different. This is part antiques show and part crafts/artisan show. Many well-known talented artisans will be on-site selling their wares, and many antiques dealers bring traditional antiques to this show.
No event is complete without great food, and there will be a variety of delicious foods from which to choose, including the in-house food vendor.
Top it all off with a Harrisburg Farm Show Milkshake made by ELCO Future Farmers of America (FFA).
Lebanon Valley Craft Brewery, which began 160 years ago, has reopened its doors in its original building and will be on-site offering
“We are amazed at the way the show has grown over the years and so grateful to have so many talented pickers and artisans set up at the show. If it wasn’t for our loyal customers, vendors, and family and friends, none of this would ever happen. We are grateful to each and every one of them,” stated Gibble.
Again this year is the ability to pre-purchase show tickets online and enter the show one hour early. To learn more, attendees may visit www.MorgansMilkweedAntiqu es.com. Tickets will be available at the door. Choose from a $10 early buyer two-day pass or the $5 Saturday pass. There is plenty of free parking. Children 12 and under attend free of charge. Bring a truck, and be prepared for an excellent weekend of great food, great fun, and even greater picking!

major role in the transformation of almost every aspect of our lives. The antiques and collectibles trade was one of the very first markets to be transformed by it. Real time pricing data alone has transformed how buyers and sellers economically respond to collecting markets.
That said, even in the year 2023, physical paper bound price guides and books devoted to antiques and collectibles serve a purpose. Auction houses know this all too well, as even today, physical auction catalogs are still a thing, and some serve as resources and reminders as to the wide range of antiques and collectibles that are readily available to bid on 24 hours a day, thanks to the rise of online auction houses. As someone who has always been considered a realist, I just hope that
Continued from page 3 some of my friends in the trade who are considered to be optimists are right: one day more physical publications devoted to the antiques and collectibles trade will grace the bookshelves at your favorite book retailer. Speaking as a realist, I must caution, the transformation of the internet era still is far from complete. Embrace your favorite publications in the antiques and collectibles trade, my friends, because nothing is ever guaranteed. And thank you for choosing to read this. Until next time.
