“Red & White Quilts: Infinite Variety” Important New Book Honors Joanna S. Rose’s Collection his historically significant Joanna S. Rose collection was amassed over five decades by Rose, and the collection was installed in 2011 in New York City’s Park Avenue Armory in an exhibition of such stunning impact that it was seen, in its six short days, by over 26,000 people. Mrs. Rose’s husband, Daniel, funded this free-to-the-public exhibition as a gift to his wife for her 80th birthday, and Skira Rizzoli published a book documenting not only the incomparable collection itself in 675 full color photographs, but also the award-winning installation by

In the Financial Times, art critic Simon Schama called the experience “Pure, runaway, skippingthrough-the-puddles joy,” adding that the exhibition was “A monster of happiness that will have no competition anywhere this season for sheer sensory riot or ecstatic retinal shock. Turning the vaulted space of the Armory into a vast tent of

hangings, the show delivers more “Each was beautiful in its own and cloth to create original and mind-blowing, optically smashing, personal way, a reflection of the beautiful and meaningful everytime-space-altering exhilaration woman, or women, who labored day covers for someone’s bed,” than anything offered by conven- with needle and thread and scissors said Martha Stewart. tional museum shows right now.” About the Authors: Experiencing the show in perElizabeth V. “Natural Selections: Andrew Wyeth Plant Studies” On Exhibition selection of Andrew Wyeth’s watercolor and pencil studies that highlight the beauty and intricacy of nature’s designs in fragmented views and isolated forms will be exhibited in “Natural Selections: Andrew Wyeth Plant Studies” at the Brandywine River Museum of Art in Chadds Ford, Pa., now through Sunday, Feb. 7, 2016. Throughout his seven-decade career, Andrew Wyeth made numerous studies in preparation for his finely worked egg tempera paintings and drybrush watercolors. These preliminary works, such as “Summer Freshet Study” (1942), show keen observation and an almost scientific approach with which he described the character and quality of the forms. His extraordinary skill and investigative method drew upon the manner of European masters such as Leonardo da Vinci and Albrecht Dürer, artists Wyeth particularly admired. Wyeth’s studies also explore what he called his “messy” side. Drips, splatters, pools of color, jittery lines, scrapes, and scratches, and bravura brush strokes convey the expressive energy and emotion he felt towards the landscape and make his images come alive. “These botanical studies, rarely on public view, demonstrate Andrew Wyeth’s continual sense of discovery in exploring color and form and his abiding passion for nature,” said Thomas Padon, director of the Brandywine River Museum of Art. “They offer a remarkable opportunity to discover the artist’s creative process and his astute observations of nature’s beauty.” “Natural Selections: Andrew Wyeth Plant Studies” is the second in a series of focused exhibitions at the Brandywine River Museum of Art on the work of Andrew Wyeth. These exhibitions complement the Andrew Wyeth gallery in which many iconic temperas and watercolors are shown. in the sale. The early season sale showcases American artists in particular. Notable works include those by Walter Mason Oddie and Edwin Clymer, as well as an early landscape of Friedensville, Pa., by prolific Bucks County artist Walter Baum. The impressionist style of Philadelphia-native Anna Richards Brewster, displayed in 15 oil works, captures scenes from her extensive travels in Italy, Norway, and England. These 19th- and early-20th century landscapes complement a seascape titled “The Lizard” by British artist Julius Olsson. Old Master prints are highlighted by a Rembrandt etching, “The Angel Departing from the Family of Tobias,” as well as several works of Giovanni Battista Piranesi, primarily from “Vendute di Roma.” Moving towards more modern works later in the day, a distinctive Cubist aesthetic will be showcased in five works by French artist Roland Bierge, particularly his “Nu Assis.” Abstraction is on display in a small bronze by William Zorach as well as a mixed media piece

by Israeli artist Igael Tumarkin. Two works by Pablo O’Higgins will also be featured. O’ Higgins, who was a student of Diego Rivera and an active member of the Mexican Communist Party, illustrates his political alliances in a watercolor and lithograph. Both pieces date to the late 1930s, preceding his exhibition in the 1940 “Twenty Centuries of Mexican Art” at MOMA, where he was one of the few non-Mexican artists represented. The day will conclude with Modernist prints from several notable European artists such as Georges Rouault, Nahum Tschacbasov, and a Salvador Dalí signed embossed lithograph “Tauromachie III” from an edition of 150. The second day of the sale will begin with roughly 200 lots from Raccoon Creek Antiques. The offerings are comprised of a large collection of woven baskets with many rare forms, extraordinary surfaces, and in excellent condition. toolmaker who produces exacting copies of 18th-century tools for our tradesmen. In the early years of CW, actual 18th-century tools were used in many of the shops. As such pieces quickly wore out, it was realized that using original items was a bad decision, and so a toolmaker was hired to produce the planes, wig stands and other items that are used today. Thus, when you see an original object or a high quality exacting reproduction, it is important to remember the skills that went into not only the final product but also the tools that were used in making it. Handmade still remains a

respects such items lack the soul of a truly unique handmade object. As I write this, I look over at a lovely Norfolk, Va., Empire table that came home with me from a weekend flea marketing. It is a lovely object made that much more special by the marks of the carver on the underside of the paw feet. Knowing of the time and skill that went into making this table is part of the reason that I found it appealing. The other part of handcraftsmanship that I think we forget about is that not only is the end product handmade, but so are the tools that made the piece. At Williamsburg, we have a behind-the-scenes

Today in the post, post, post modern world that we exist in, handcraftsmanship is something very far removed from our experiences. We do not see or perhaps even understand the amount of skill and work that went into making what today are simple objects like leather-bound books. I often encourage young collectors to begin with handmade objects. Sure, it’s easy to collect mass-produced toys or figures, but in many

The other day, Colonial Williamsburg’s master bookbinder Bruce Plumley came into my office to show me the work that was being done by his apprentice. Bruce is a quiet gentleman who is legendary in the world of bookbinders. He crafted the guest register for the wedding of Prince Charles and Lady Diana as well as numerous other royal commissions.

Bruce has been working with his apprentice bookbinder, and he wanted to show me the level of work that he had been doing. For me, as someone who cannot draw a line with a straight edge, the work is mind-boggling. Paring leather down, stamping and applying gold leaf, binding the paper in—it is an amazing amount of work and skill to be found in a simple book. In the 18th century, leather-bound books were valued so highly that most people could not afford them. At Williamsburg, we follow the tradition of generally producing blank books since tradesmen, professionals and landowners all
