Day one, which contained all the above mentioned items, featured 14 lots of gaming collectibles, 13 saloon collectibles, 121 lots of rare vintage and antique bottles, 201 lots of tokens and 387 lots of numismatic items, including bank bags, coins, books, checks, ingots, medals, mint and proof coin sets, popular “so-called” dollars, scales, currency, scrip, commemoratives and ephemera.

The Rothchild and Sons 1935 silver ingot was a discovery piece out of the Chicago area and is possibly the only existing large Rothchild silver ingot. The Chinese gold unicorn coin, one of 1,000 minted by the China Mint Company, is legal tender in the People’s Republic of China, with a face value of 100 yuan. Measuring 32 mm in diameter and 99.9 percent pure gold by composition, the coin showed a standing unicorn above foliage on the obverse and a dragon on the reverse. It was housed in its original velvet-lined box.

The museum invites the public to bring a lunch and join in a casual conversation and understanding of the story behind these “haunted” pieces. “We wanted to provide a more intimate opportunity for people to discover the colorful stories behind the objects from the museum collection and learn about important and interesting aspects of the history of time and timekeeping. We thought a brown bag lunch would be the perfect fit,” explained Jovinelli.

The Met’s Costume Institute’s exhibition, “Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination,” recently welcomed its one millionth visitor, making it the Costume Institute’s most attended show ever and the Met’s third overall most attended. It replaces “The Vatican Collections” (1983) as number three and is just behind “Mona Lisa” (1963).

“Treasures of Tutankhamun” (1978) is the Met’s most attended show, with 1,360,957 visitors. “Heavenly Bodies” is on view at the Met Fifth Avenue and the Met Cloisters through Monday, Oct. 8.

The Second Coming Of Collectible Trading Cards encountered numerous competitors that wanted to dominate the sports card market for themselves. Both Donruss and Fleer were two major competitors of Topps at the time and started to resort to ongoing gimmicks to attempt to gain market share. Topps responded in kind, and before you knew it, a full-blown speculative market was unleashed onto the trading card public.

Baseball cards were no longer being marketed to avid sports enthusiasts and children. They were being presented as investments that would help finance the would-be collector’s retirement. This caused a glut of product to be dumped on the market in the late 1980s and early 1990s, with Wall Street and several high-profile capitalists taking full advantage. When all was said and done, Fleer would face bankruptcy proceedings and a lot of mom-and-pop sports collectible shops that opened during the speculative boom would be left in shambles. Few would survive into the new millennium. their wounds. But fate would intervene.

By 1996, sports card collecting was still recovering and quite popular among longtime enthusiasts who were able to look past the speculative boom of the late 1980s and early 90s.

Trade shows were still popular, and thanks to the rise of the world wide web, collectors could interact with one another in ways never before thought possible. It was these developments that caught the interest of the Collectors Universe, a large corporation traded on the Nasdaq stock exchange that gained fame for the creation of PCGS, a highly reputable coin grading company founded in 1985. Collectors Universe officially opened PSA, which stands for Professional Sports Authenticator, in 1998 to much fanfare. The company grades and authenticates sports memorabilia with a primary focus on trading cards, which has become its most popular service. Today, the company also grades and authenticates other popular collectible trading cards, such as “Magic: The Gathering” and “Pokemon” cards, which I have commented on extensively in previous articles. PSA is credited with contributing to the recent vintage trading card boom that has caused massive amounts of media attention being paid to it on a regular basis.

It should be noted that this current trend is not just regulated to sports card collecting.

Trading card collecting is one of the oldest mainstream categories in the collectibles trade.

Started in 1875 as a way for tobacco companies to sell more products, manufacturers would include a collectible trading card that depicted a well-known person or athlete with their product. This marketing gimmick was not seen as controversial at first. The controversy started in 1909, when the American Tobacco Company released a trading card depicting an early, relatively unknown baseball player named Honus Wagner as part of its T206 series of cards.

Depending on what version of the story you want to believe, Wagner was either upset because children would be exposed to tobacco products due to his image being used, or he simply wanted more money for the use of his image to sell products. Regardless, he successfully petitioned the American Tobacco Company to stop issuing his trading card and by 1911 the card was out of production, with a very small

number having been released to the public. Experts put this number between 50 and 200 cards, but exact numbers are impossible to obtain. Today, the Honus Wagner T206 series card is among the most valuable trading card in history. A card in very poor condition and authenticated by a credible third-party grading company can easily sell for six figures or more and is highly coveted throughout the trade.

It would take many more decades from the release of the now-coveted Honus Wagner T206 series card for sports trading cards to go mainstream. In 1948, Bowman Gum released the first set of black and white baseball cards to moderate success. This caused competitor Topps to release its first set of baseball cards in 1952, which is now known for including the coveted Mickey Mantle rookie card.

By 1956, with sales of baseball cards increasing, Topps Chewing Gum Company purchased Bowman Gum. It was this development that gave rise to baseball card collecting as we now know it.

Baseball card collecting made heavy strides from the late 1950s to the mid-1980s. It was at this point when Topps

Central Penn Doll Collector Club’s annual show and sale, “A Doll for All Seasons,” will be held Sunday, Oct. 7, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The show will return to the Lebanon Valley Expo Center, 80 Rocherty Road, Lebanon, Pa., located off of Route 72, five miles from Pennsylvania Turnpike Exit 266 (Lebanon/Lancaster). The hall is large, bright, and handicapped accessible with ample parking and an on-site ATM. The indoor food concession will be open throughout the show. Show admission is $5 ($4 with an ad). Children under 12, accompanied by an adult, will be admitted free of charge.

There will be over 80 tables of merchandise offered by more than 35 dealers, including some out-of-state dealers.

Pook & Pook Inc., of Downingtown, Pa., enjoyed impressive results for its first auction of the busy fall season.

On Sept. 14 and 15, the salesroom was buzzing with guests eager to preview the lots on offer and place their winning bids. Early American furniture was among the stars of the weekend. The first lot of the two-day sale was the top lot of the weekend, with a winning bid of $27,500. Lot 1, the Connecticut Pilgrim Century joined oak sunflower chest, is a good example of early 18thcentury Colonial craftsmanship, made of native woods and borrowing elements of Continental design. Prices reported include buyer’s premium.

Other top lots of mention included a slender southern Hepplewhite mahogany cellarette selling for $18,750. The cellarette, with its original brasses and marquetry spiral shell inlay, was a popular lot and kept the entire bidding staff busy on the phones.

Strong Prices And A Few Surprises At JSE & Associates’ Summer Americana And Variety Auction Bisque Figural Skeleton Miniature Lamp Sells For $11,115 The Jeffrey S. Evans and Associates Summer Americana and Variety Auction on Aug. 24 and 25 was a highly successful event and produced strong prices, along with a few surprises, in multiple categories. The two-day format consisted of 1,380 lots of diverse material that generated robust levels of participation for the firm, a strong indication of vigor in several segments of the marketplace.

Bidding was intense throughout each day, with over 3,000 registered bidders from 26 countries participating inhouse and online.

Session one consisted of selections from the 50-plusyear collection of the late Joan Wentz, Germansville, Pa. Starting the weekend off with a bang, the Wentz collection included a broad array of fresh-to-the-market antiques and collectibles that were well received, with most examples meeting or exceeding pre-sale

expectations. The 506-lot offering featured a selection of miniature lighting, fine rabbitware and spatterware, American folk art and pottery, and an assortment of vintage holiday toys and decorations.

The top lot was a bisque figural skeleton miniature lamp with nearly flawless eyes, which garnered $11,115.

All prices include a 17 percent buyer’s premium. Other noteworthy results from the session included a Rene Lalique perfume bottle at $5,557, a miniature hanging cast-iron Firefly triple-arm chandelier at $5,265, and a Pennsylvania paint-decorated tole chamberstick selling for $4,095.

Session two consisted of the firm’s usual diverse selection of antiques and collectibles and produced strong results, with numerous categories demonstrating signs of renewed energy. Several surprises were in order, most notably a fine Native American, probably Navajo, rug/blanket that was fresh from the estate of Nicholas de

Belleville Katzenbach, Princeton, N.J. It turned out to be the weekend’s top lot, selling for $25,740. The weaving, despite imperfections, sparked a tremendous amount of pre-sale interest and was purchased, after heated bidding, by a New York gallery bidding by phone.

Movie Magazines: Favorites Of Starstruck Fans

By Roy Nuhn Back when the Great Depression had America in its grip and working women and men considered themselves lucky to earn 10 dollars a week behind a counter or in a factory, millions of people spent a small part of each paycheck on a ticket to Hollywood. For about 10 cents, a person could

purchase the latest issue of “Photoplay” or “Modern Screen” and be instantly transported to film sets, premieres at Grauman’s Chinese Theater, lunch at the Brown Derby, or the home of a favorite movie star.

The Tinseltown visited was a place where elegant women and handsome men became the idols of millions, earned enormous salaries, and

parked block-long Dusenbergs in the driveways of their estates. It was a wonderful world, glamorous and romantic, even if it existed only in the pages of the great movie magazines.

Long before, as early as the 1890s, Americans began reading about the new movie pictures in general interest publications. A few short-lived

periodicals devoted exclusively to “the flickers” appeared and disappeared in the opening years of the 20th century. The first regularly published magazines about movies were “Photoplay Motion Picture Stories” (later “Motion Pictures”) and “Picture Play” that debuted between 1909 and 1911.

But the golden age of movie magazines, from the 1920s to the ’40s, coincides with the heyday of Hollywood’s star system. As

the number of theaters grew and attendance figures skyrocketed, the public developed an obsessive interest in the personalities and private lives of the larger-than-life figures they watched on the silver screen.

New publications catered to their endless appetite for information and gossip. More and more titles appeared, starting in the days of silent films and continuing, despite hard times, all through the 1930s. Among the best were

“Screenland,” which debuted in 1923, “Movie Story” (1924), “Movie Mirror” (1928), “Modern Screen” (1930), “Silver Screen” (1930) and “Movie Guide” (1931).

Their readers were usually, though not exclusively, young and female. For typically a dime, the dedicated fan got anywhere from 80 to 200 pages per issue, including 60 to 100 photos of stars, both candids of them at work and play and glamorous studio Continued on page 23

As a longtime member of the Still Bank Collectors Club of America, he has served on the board of directors and is a past president. In 2009, he hosted the club’s annual convention in Gettysburg, Pa. He currently resides in York County, Pa., with his wife, Beth, and their two teenage children.

On my second trip around the flea market, the same dealer had the exact same piece, at the exact same price. Yep. I bought a reproduction. And I

overpaid for it. I failed to buy it right, and it wasn’t real. I held it for a few years before selling at a loss. The lesson of this story, if you fail to buy right, you’ll probably fail to make a profit.

One of the premier political banners surviving from the era, Henry Clay’s spectacular handpainted banner from the 1844 campaign drew multiple bids before closing at $35,000, nearly double its pre-auction estimate.

Reflecting the Nativist and Protectionist viewpoint of many of Clay’s supporters, the banner features a portrait of Clay over text that reads: “AMERICA THOU ART OUR COUNTRY AND THEE WILL WE SUPPORT / We are labourers and would not that our children’s bread should be cast to the dogs of foreign nations.”

A rare Polk and Dallas significantly large 1844 campaign flag banner sold for $81,250, and a pocket watch owned by one of the passengers on the R.M.S. Titanic drew $57,500 to lead Heritage Auctions’ Americana and Political Auction held Aug. 25 and 26 in Dallas, Texas. Sales from the two-day event totaled $1,459,448.

“This auction featured items that really captured the fascination of collectors of all levels,” according to Heritage’s Americana Auctions director Tom Slater.

“The 1844 campaign flag and the watch from the Titanic are lots that tell important stories and will be key pieces in their new owners’ collections.”

Polk campaign items, especially display pieces, are rare, and the Polk and Dallas flag is one of the largest political flags ever made, measuring 49.5-by-30.5 inches, or 57by-38 inches with the frame.

The flag is one of perhaps six known. It formerly resided in the legendary U.I. “Chick” Harris collection and achieved the highest price of any item when that collection was sold in a series of eight auctions nearly 20 years ago. Intended for horizontal display, it still has the original fabric loops for suspension across the top and fine stitching around the perimeter.

The pocket watch was salvaged from Sinai Kantor, a Russian immigrant who was one of the victims when the Titanic collided with an iceberg on April 15, 1912. Kantor’s belongings, including the watch, were returned to his widow, Miriam, who was spared when “women and children first” protocol earned her a seat on the final lifeboat to reach the rescue ship R.M.S. Carpathia.

By Anita Stratos From the late 19th century through early 1948, Weller Pottery produced high-quality pieces in their Zanesville, Ohio, factory. Originally, Weller art pottery was handdecorated, but by the early 1920s, the company moved to high-production commercial art pottery; by 1935, the company was making only molded pottery. And while the Louwelsa pottery line, named after founder Samuel Weller’s daughter, Louise, was one of its most popular and longrunning lines with over 500 different shapes, it’s the Sicard line, which ceased production in 1907, that is and has been the most soughtafter of Weller’s patterns.

Weller used a number of different marks throughout its years in business, and occasionally you might find an authentic piece that doesn’t use the Weller name at all. It’s best to have a trusted reference source that shows the

different marks Weller used throughout their 60-plus years in business so you can check any piece before you buy it.

However, Weller used incised or impressed marks for most of their lines all the way up until 1933, when a raised script-style “Weller Pottery” was used on molded pottery through 1948. The name “Weller” did not appear by itself on any of these pieces.

This brings us to a particularly brazen fake that was made in the midwestern U.S. Attempting to look like a piece from Weller’s L’Art Nouveau line (190304) that put a focus on the female form, this $20 fake has skin-toned, arched female nudes as handles on a greenish-gray vase. It shows none of the beauty or grace of a true Weller piece, but it sports a raised “Weller” mark (with the single name appearing alone) molded into the bottom. Since Weller’s molded pottery came into production well after their L’Art Nouveau period, this is an obvious giveaway.

Another thing that’s clearly wrong with the purported Weller piece was the glaze.

The fake piece has a glossy glaze while Weller’s L’Art Nouveau pieces were all matte glazed. In addition, the glaze is crazed, which in and of itself is not proof of age; in fact, many scammers deliberately manufacture fakes with

Some magazines, like “Movie Story,” featured novelized versions of current movies, illustrated with scene stills.

But more relied on a bubbly brew of behind-the-scenes stories, chatty interviews, reviews of current pictures, beauty and fashion advice from the stars, contests and photos to clip out and paste in scrapbooks.

Columnists such as Hedda Hopper, Louella Parsons and Sheila Graham became celebrities themselves by providing juicy personal and professional gossip. Once in a while, “Photoplay” even ran articles about Hollywood by serious writers, including H.L. Menken, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Theodore Dreiser and Sherwood Anderson.

But the public wasn’t looking for literature when it leafed through the latest movie magazine, which was just as well, because they were more likely to get breathlessly gushy stories with titles like “What Has Success Done to Robert Taylor?” and “The Suicide of Her Husband Came Just as the Cup of Happiness Was at Jean Harlow’s Lips.”

Throughout the glory years, the studios provided photographs, access to the films in progress, endless reams of publicity material, and the clout to make stars pose for at-home layouts, whether they wanted to or not.

When the studio system began to decline in the 1950s, so did the movie magazines.

Many went on to publishing, but the quality of photographs and paper declined to keep prices low, and their tone grew increasingly shrill.

The products of the golden age of Hollywood hype and fantasy continue to intrigue. Turn the pages of any vintage issue, read the articles, look at the photographs, browse through the ads. They are a great reminder of Hollywood’s and the motion picture’s golden past.

NEH Grant Will Help Winterthur Address Storage Challenges Improving Accessibility To Collections A Key Goal Winterthur Museum, Garden and Library is pleased to announce that it has received a $50,000 grant from the National Endowment of the Humanities to create a long-term plan that will make its collection more accessible to the public while improving the quality of its care.

The grant, from the NEH’s Sustaining Cultural Heritage Collections (SCHC) program, helps cultural institutions by supporting measures that prevent deterioration of objects in their collections.

At Winterthur, SCHC grant monies will give staff members two years to determine storage locations and sustainable procedures that increase accessibility to its collections of American decorative arts and fine arts objects, library materials, garden objects, and estate artifacts. The project will also allow Winterthur to produce

research and implement workshops on storage solutions that will be useful for a wide variety of institutions, especially small to mid-size institutions with less accessibility to people and funds to carry out research on their own.

“Thanks to Henry Francis du Pont and collectors who have followed him, Winterthur holds preeminent collections of fine and decorative arts as well as library materials,” said Carol B. Cadou, Charles F. Montgomery director and CEO of Winterthur. “We have been challenged with proper storage for these vast collections since the museum opened in 1951. I’m delighted that, thanks to the NEH, we will arrive at a solution for these truly national collections.”

Since it opened, Winterthur has continued to acquire objects that tell the story of our country’s pre-industrial past. As the

collection has grown, Winterthur has converted offices, barns, and living quarters to storage spaces. Objects are currently stored in 107 different locations, making it a challenge for staff, researchers, educators, and the public to access them.

Winterthur wants to address the issue with a solution that is economically, environmentally, and socially sustainable.

Intense study of Winterthur’s collections over decades has resulted in a robust field of material culture and art conservation professionals who care for cultural heritage collections around the world. Many of Winterthur’s resources cannot be found elsewhere, which makes their long-term storage and access a paramount concern.

At the conclusion of the grant period in September 2020, Winterthur will have a comprehensive solution for

He resumed his career at Benjamins after his military duty from 1946 to 1953. He then owned and operated Robt Withey Interiors from 1953 to 1979, retiring in 1994. His business was then carried on by his son.
