Two Jonas Weber Boxes And Ben Austrian Paintings Coming Up At Hess Auction Group Sale

Two extremely fine Jonas Weber pine paint-decorated boxes consigned by different sellers are part of several highlights of the Fall Antiques and Americana Auction for Hess Auction Group’s Conestoga Auction Company on Saturday, Oct. 7. Jonas Weber (1810-76) was born in East Earl (Brecknock Township), Lancaster County, Pa., and is known for paint-decorated boxes, some with feet, some without. Today, they are viewed as highly prized Pennsylvania German folk art. One example in the sale has a blue/green ground with 3-1/2 story off-white, salmon and yellow house flanked by trees, green and yellow foreground. This small lift-top box has been in the same family since 1850 and has never been offered for public sale. The second example is on a yellow ground with 3-1/2 story salmon and blue house flanked by trees, green and red foreground. This is the

box with a 3-1/2 story house known. It was in the same family for three generations prior to the latest owner, who acquired it in the Fivepointville area of northern Lancaster County.

Another highlight is a fine, large wooden carved and painted folk art poodle, attributed to Wilhelm Schimmel (1817-90), Cumberland County, Pa. It is coming from the Tillisch estate of Harrisburg and has been in that private collection for over 50 years.

The Ben Austrian paintings include an exceptional, rare large oilon-canvas painting by Ben Austrian (1870-1921) depicting an English setter on a rocky shoreline, signed and dated 1910. This painting is from the private collection of

Quentin Sternbergh, Reading, Pa., and was purchased at Pennypacker Auction Centre in 1980. Quentin Sternbergh was the grandson of the wealthy Reading industrialist J. Hervey Sternbergh, who was one of the artist’s staunchest patrons at the turn of the century. Another notable Ben Austrian oil painting is

sketches, photographs, and correspondence between the artist and the person who commissioned the piece. A carved Bald Eagle by Rowe was the official emblem of the National Rifle Association in Washington, D.C. Additionally, there is a highly detailed watercolor painting of a gyrfalcon by Earl Poole (1891-1972), a summer landscape painting by Christopher H. Shearer (18461926), and an autumnal landscape by his son Victor Shearer (1872-1951).

Rounding out the rest of the 625 lots of woodenwares, china, glass, artwork, and furniture are approximately 100 lots to include teddy bears (including Steiff), Christmas decorations, and toys.

Hess Auction Group is excited to offer these items at its Conestoga Auction Gallery at a live auction on Saturday, Oct. 7, starting at 9 a.m. Live bidding will also be available through Live Auctioneers and HiBid. Approximately 400 additional lots will be offered online only.

The well-known authority of antique portrait miniatures Elle Shushan will give a short lecture on the subject on Saturday, Oct. 7, at 7 p.m. at Locati LLC in Pineville, Pa. (central Bucks County). The idea of Shushan coming to the auction house was inspired by a large collection of antique portrait miniatures that Locati LLC is selling in its October auction. “We thought it would be great to have a lecture tied to this wonderful collection,” said co-owner Michael Locati. “We think it will be exciting for people to learn about

Collector Chats With Peter S. Seibert

This Week: Soft And Hot Markets

Fall is upon us, and with it comes a return of college football, country auctions and collecting. The summer, in my estimation, has been pretty brutal in the antiques trade. The hot weather and economic turmoil have kept many buyers away. Some dealers, looking to their own fears of inflation, have started to raise prices on antiques. This, in my mind, has been offset by some antiques malls with signs offering 20, 40 and 50 percent off sales. There were strong late spring and early summer auctions, but then, like always, things dropped off hard in the middle. Today, watching an auction online, I was mighty impressed by the high prices.

The antiques market is definitely a bellwether for people’s discretionary spending. For collectors of specific categories of items, economic threats mean more limited spending and fewer upgrades in quality. However, I never met a dedicated collector who let money stand in the way of a missing item for their collection. The bigger impact of the economy seems to be on the casual Saturday or Sunday shop buyer. These are the folks who might be coming home from a football game or doing some leaf peeping and decide to stop and shop. They might buy a lamp for their guest room or a piece of china for their daughter. These customers’ purchases are more impulse and nostalgia based, rather than those of a passionate, active collector seeking a specific item. These casual buyers provide a lot of badly needed turnover in the co-op world where their buying can help generalist dealers.

My predictions for the fall are that we will see a strong push for the country look again. There are a couple of

reasons why. First is that the fall is the time for seasonal decorations. Thanksgiving and Christmas are seasons where even the most dedicated urbanite wants to create a real or mythical country home for the holidays. Second is that economic downturns historically spur an interest in country items, the logic being that country items are appealing to people, like a slice of apple pie or bowl of oatmeal, when the outside world is complex or harsh. Finally, lots of baby boomer country collections are coming on the market right now. Every auction in the MidAtlantic seems to be teeming with crocks, painted jelly cupboards and the like. So there will be strong prices for the rarest and interest all around to support the market.

I think brown furniture will remain in the doldrums, with the exception being super high style or pristine objects. Anything with a bit of a problem is going to sit wanting a bidder. Paintings and jewelry will be remarkably strong, as people see them as a real hedge against inflation. I would also add coins into that same mix, as

people run to those when worried about their investments.

For a young collector with $1,000 in their pocket, I would go old school and look at Currier and Ives prints, oriental rugs, brown furniture and china. Yes, I know, this is what your parents collected, but great style never really goes out of fashion.

“Born to collect” should be the motto of Peter Seibert’s family. Raised in Central Pennsylvania, Seibert has been collecting and writing about antiques for more than three decades. By day, he is a museum director and has worked in Pennsylvania, Wyoming, Virginia and New Mexico. In addition, he advises and consults with auction houses throughout the MidAtlantic region, particularly about American furniture and decorative arts. Seibert’s writings include books on photography,Americanfraternalsocietiesandpaintings.Heandhis familyarerestoringa1905arts and crafts house filled with years’ worth of antique treasures found in shops, co-ops and at auctions.

Barnes Foundation Presents First Major U.S. Exhibition Of French Artist Marie Laurencin

This fall, the Barnes Foundation will present “Marie Laurencin: Sapphic Paris,” the first major U.S.

exhibition dedicated to French artist Marie Laurencin in over 30 years. Co-curated by Simonetta

Fraquelli, consulting curator for the Barnes, and Cindy Kang, curator at the Barnes, this exhibition explores Laurencin’s career, from her self-portraits to her collaborative decorative projects, from her early cubist paintings to her signature works that defined 1920s Paris.

“Marie Laurencin: Sapphic Paris” is sponsored by Comcast NBCUniversal and Denise Littlefield Sobel. Additional support is provided by LAGOS. Funding for the exhibition comes from The Kaleta A. Doolin Foundation. This exhibition will be on view in the Roberts Gallery from Sunday, Oct. 22, through Jan. 21, 2024.

Beginning in the early 20th century, French artist Marie Laurencin (1883–1956) created a unique pictorial world that placed women at the center of modern art. Working in Paris, in an environment dominated by male artists, Laurencin had a highly original painting style that defied categorization. She moved seamlessly between the male-dominated cubist avant-garde and the realms of fashion, ballet, and decorative arts.

Laurencin became a fixture of the contemporary art scene in pre-war Paris and had a passionate and tumultuous relationship with the poet and art critic Guillaume Apollinaire. Pablo Picasso had introduced them in 1907, and she immediately became part of the cubist inner circle. Their breakup in 1913, combined with the death of her mother, likely prompted a hasty marriage to the German baron and artist Otto von Wätjen in 1914. The couple fled to Spain during WWI and circulated among other self-exiled artists, including Francis

Picabia. In 1921, the couple divorced and Laurencin returned definitively to Paris, having developed her signature style of female figures in a blue-rose-gray palette.

Laurencin’s feminine aesthetic defined 1920s Paris. She was commissioned by Serge Diaghilev to design the ballet Les Biches and by society figures like Coco Chanel and Helena Rubinstein to paint their portraits. One of Laurencin’s final projects was to illustrate the “Poems of Sappho” in 1950.

“We are proud to present the first U.S. exhibition in over three decades dedicated to Marie Laurencin’s

One Of Baseball’s Rarest And Most Treasured Card Sets, The 1914 Boston Garters, Socks It To The Hobby

Historic 12-Card Set, Hidden For More Than A Century, Will Sell At Heritage

There are rare baseball cards. There are Holy Grail baseball cards. And then there are the 1914 Boston Garters that serve as the centerpiece of Heritage’s Friday and Saturday, Sept. 29 and 30, Fall Sports Card Catalog Auction.

was much to it,” mentioned Rick Beasley. He laughs. “I mean, there was a 50-50 chance I could have thrown it away. But it wasn’t meant to be that way. And I am sure glad it wasn’t.”

So, too, is the rest of the

set shot past the half-milliondollar mark almost immediately upon opening in early September. The “Shoeless” Joe Jackson card alone is already approaching $200,000, nearly four times what his card realized 13 years ago.

“It’s truly one of the rarest sets ever made,” says Heritage Auctions Executive Vice President Derek Grady. “They were giant cards, unlike anything ever seen before, and they advertised garters. These have never seen the light of day for more than 100 years, literally. The coolness factor is off the charts.”

This is likely the first time many in the hobby heard of the 1914 Boston Garters because they barely exist. And these almost didn’t. A complete set of the oversized cards, 12 in all, each in glorious color, sat for decades in a closet and then in a garage, stored in a scrapbook kept in a plastic bag. Fred Beasley, then a 7-year-old from Calhoun City, Miss., collected the cards more than a century ago. Then he, and everyone else in the family, forgot about them until his grandson, Rick, almost threw them out not so long ago.

“I just didn’t think there

collecting hobby. This marks the first time the full dozen has been available at auction in almost three decades. So rare are these early cards, valuable, too, that each of the 12 will also be offered individually. As the catalog notes:

“If the aggregate winning bids of the 12 individual lots exceeds the high bid on the complete set, the cards will be sold to each individual winner. If the price of the set exceeds the sum of the 12 individual cards, the victory will be awarded to the high bidder for the complete set.”

The Boston Garter was the creation of the George Frost Company of, naturally, Boston, Mass., which began manufacturing the sock supporter in 1879, shortly after it was patented. The company’s ads insisted that the garter was “recognized as an essential of dress by men of every country in the civilized world” and that

geese and swans, to doves and crows. Hand stated, “What I value the most about my career isn’t the decoys I made but the people behind me that I’ve helped and taught to carve.”

Yellow Garage show promoters are excited to announce that local legend J. P. “Jamie” Hand will demonstrate duck decoy carving at the Fall Festival of Antiques on Saturday, Sept. 30.

James Perry Hand, known as both J.P. and Jamie, has been a traditional decoy maker for over 40 years. He has lived all his life in Cape May County, where he’s able to trace his lineage back to English whalers who came down from the Hamptons of Long Island in the late 17th century.

Hand’s decoy carving mentors were Harry Shourds III of Atlantic City and Hurley Conklin of Manahawkin. Hand sold his first decoy from Harry Shourd’s table at a decoy show in Point Pleasant, N.J., which is when he decided to make decoys for a living. Throughout his career, Hand has “paid it forward” by teaching others to carve, as his mentors had done for him.

Hand still makes his decoys the way his predecessors did. He uses a band saw to create the rough

shape from his own pattern andthen chops with a sharp hatchet. He hollows it out with a mallet and a gouge and then spoke-shaves the outside and creates the finishing details with a knife. The final shape is painted by Hand in his Sam Hunt banjo chair.

Several years ago, Hand was inducted into the New Jersey Decoy Collectors Associates Hall of Fame. Upon accepting the honor, he reflected on the countless decoys he has made, ranging from shorebirds and ducks, to

Years ago, Hand became involved with the Cape May County Historical and Genealogical Society, for which he has researched and written articles and also edited the annual journal of history called “The Blue Book.” Hand also co-authored and released a book with his cousin, Daniel Stites, “The Cape May Navy: Delaware Bay Privateers in the American Revolution.”

Hand will be showcasing his craft during the Fall Festival of Antiques at the Gloucester County 4H Fairgrounds, located at 275 Bridgeton Pike, Mullica Hill, N.J. Event tickets can be purchased on www.Ticket leap.com or at the gate.

Post-Covid, New Life In The Antiques Market

more, getting reacquainted with our belongings, exploring our attics, or maybe just having more time on our hands to read magazines. Whatever the case, one thing is clear: there’s a clear resurgence in interest, and therefore in prices, in antiques, driven in large part by online auctions. Categories that had plateaued in recent years or had been mostly overlooked are fetching record prices at auction and in private sales.

There will always be pop culture moments that cause specific items to soar for a short period. Barbie mania is alive and well in the antiques market, and Princess Diana’s

By 1912, the company was thriving, and Frost began using baseball players to advertise his garters. That year, the company made 16 cards featuring color paintings of players wearing the sock supporters, among them Christy Mathewson, Hughie Jennings, Walter Johnson and Tris Speaker. The mail-order offerings must not have been a hit with customers: PSA has just one card in its population report, while SGC has only 10. Frost tried again two years later with two varieties of cards: 12 cards printed in stunning color and another 10 offered in black and white. Different players appeared in each set, with the color cards getting most of the game’s superstars, among them Ty Cobb, Tris Speaker, “Shoeless” Joe Jackson, Frank “Home Run” Baker, Walter Johnson, Joe Tinker and Johnny Evers (as in: “Tinker to Evers to Chance”) and “Lightning” Larry Doyle.

The oversized cards, over 8 inches tall by 4 inches wide, were made solely as store displays. Retailers were encouraged to write to

that appeals to consumers.

Cars: Antique cars are having a huge resurgence.

Comics: Auction houses that specialize in comic books are reaping the rewards not only of a post-Covid surge in sales, but also from a Hollywood that’s focused on recycling action heroes with prequels and sequels. Heritage Auctions, one of the big houses for comics, among other things, is about to put up for auction a huge collection of original comics discovered boxed up on a second floor of a long-closed feed store. It’s expected to reach record prices.

the Frost Company “if you haven’t the twelve pictures which should be used for window display.” And the backs of both sets reiterated: “These pictures are FREE to retailers only.” It’s likely most of those cards were eventually thrown out, like any impermanent advertisement: PSA has but two of the color cards in its population count, while SCG counts only 43 in its pop report.

Beasley’s discovery wasn’t just fortuitous. It was historic.

“You always dream about something like this,” said Beasley. “It just hardly ever happens.”

Rick’s grandfather Fred kept the cards in a scrapbook, a giant cash ledger, more accurately, which he’d taken from the insurance office owned by his father, Charles Beasley, who in 1915 served the first of his two terms as Calhoun City mayor.

On the front, Fred pasted a newspaper cutout of a ballplayer that has worn off over time. He filled the bulging ledger with newspaper and magazine clippings, Cracker Jack and T206 cards, a 1913 Fatima Team card featuring the Boston Americans, and other colorful advertisements and promotions. An

entire page is filled with a Technicolor portrait of Christy Mathewson from a Tuxedo Tobacco advertising display, which is nearly as rare as the Boston Garters that were also kept safe inside the scrapbook. Rick figures his great-grandfather procured the cards for little Fred.

Fred stashed the scrapbook in a closet and forgot all about it. Rick figures he retrieved it in the late 1940s, after Charles’ death. Eventually, it became part of the family’s collective stuff, one item among many kept in bags and boxes passed from grandfather to father to son to garage, where it’s either stored forever or tossed eventually.

Rick says he was close to pitching the bag with the scrapbook until one afternoon, he just decided to give it another peek before hauling it to the trash. That’s when he realized his grandfather’s scrapbook was among the detritus. Rick thumbed through it, saw the Boston Garter cards, and turned to eBay to see if they were worth something. He found a few listings for around $30 each, which he thought was a score for stuff he’d almost thrown away.

Then he realized those were replicas.

“I thought, well, if someone’s willing to pay $30 for a replica, what about the real thing?”

Beasley says he started calling card shops around Mississippi and Louisiana for guidance, but no one had heard of the Boston Garters. Most shop owners, he says, “blew me off.” At which point, Beasley sent Heritage some photos and requested an appraisal. Within half an hour, Grady was on the phone wanting to visit Beasley to see his cards.

“When they do surface, it’s just one card found or kept somewhere, never a complete set,” said Grady. “But here it was, a beautiful, radiant, complete set.”

Grady told Rick what he had, and what they might be worth. And even though bidders are already tussling over the cards, with weeks to go before the auction is closed, Rick still doesn’t believe it. One man’s almost-trash is indeed the hobby’s latest treasure.

“I am not sure I can tell you what I think about it yet,” followed up Beasley. “I was just shocked. I don’t know any other way to describe it.”

“Emma: The Matchmaker” Returns To The Hand Mansion This Fall

One-Act Play Adapted From Novel Will Be Performed At Museum In Lancaster, Pa.

Historic Rock Ford is pleased to once again present “Emma, The Matchmaker.” This one-act play, adapted by Historic Rock Ford Director Sam Slaymaker from the classic novel by Jane Austen, will be presented in the theatrically candlelit rooms of the General Edward Hand Mansion on Nov. 2, 3, 4, 9, 10, 16, 17 and 18. Tickets are $20 and are available at www.rockford.yapsody.com.

Each performance is approximately one hour, with scenes taking place in each of the four parlors on the main floor and in the central hallway of the ca. 1794 Hand Mansion. The Rock Ford Dancers are planning to participate in this production to

enhance period music, dance and festivity. The play was first performed at Rock Ford to sold-out audiences in 2019 and was revived in 2021. This year’s production will be directed by Rachel Faust, who has portrayed Emma in previous productions. Faust has recruited a cast of regional actors to play the lead roles and is looking forward to bringing Jane Austen’s sparkling humor, wit and rich repartee back to Rock Ford. “While performing on stage is always special, there is something truly magical about bringing an audience into the historic rooms of the Hand Mansion,” said Faust. “By doing so, it is almost as if we are able to

transport them into the story, back to Regency England.”

There is a rationale for presenting a play based on the work of Jane Austen at Rock Ford. Although it is, of course, set in England, “Emma” takes place ca. 1800 during Edward Hand’s era. Furthermore, Hand came from an Anglo-Irish background and lived in a Georgian country mansion. The life and customs of the English country gentry at the turn of the 19th century would have felt familiar to him and to his family.

Because “Emma” is a novel of over 400 pages, Slaymaker realized from the outset that it would only be possible to present a small part of it. “Fortunately, Austen divided ‘Emma’ into three ‘volumes,’ a format that allowed us to adapt a section of the novel in a way that still enabled us to tell a complete story,” explains Slaymaker. “I decided to focus on the first volume, which tells the story of how Emma chooses to act as a ‘matchmaker’ between her friend Harriet Smith and Mr. Elton, the village vicar. Things do not turn out at all as Emma intends, she learns some lessons and the stage is set for the rest of the novel. By focusing on Volume One, we are able to provide our guests with a healthy sampling of some of Jane Austen’s great dialogue, humor and sharp wit while foreshadowing things that will happen later in the story. We are also able to incorporate some wonderful period music and dancing as part of Emma’s efforts to bring Miss Smith and Mr. Elton together.”

Due to the size of the rooms in the Hand Mansion,

Materials Used In Interactive Illusion From “The Magic Of David Copperfield XIV: Flying – Live The Dream” TV Special

Sold For $36,000

Items Set New World’s Record For Most Expensive Object From The Repertoire Of A Living Magician To Sell At Auction

Potter & Potter Auctions

is pleased to announce the results of this 379-lot sale held on Aug. 26. The auction had a 99 percent sell-through rate. All prices noted include the company’s 20-percent buyer’s premium.

The top lot in this sale was #315, materials used in the interactive illusion from “The Magic of David Copperfield XIV: Flying – Live the Dream” TV special. These were estimated at $1,000$2,000 and skyrocketed to $36,000. They included 14 custom-printed and designed images used in the performance of an effect performed for millions of viewers of his 1992 ABC TV special.

The trick worked like this. Television viewers were asked to choose one of 12 symbols suspended on a sheet of glass positioned close to the camera. They included images of The Eiffel Tower, The Statue of Liberty, and other large, well known landmarks. Viewers were invited to move about their screens, fingers on the glass, from one symbol to another. Then, Copperfield began eliminating symbols one at a time, causing them to fall from the glass as if by magic. Finally, a large pointer was affixed to the glass at the center of the remaining images. The dial then rotated as if guided by a mysterious

force, until it pointed to one symbol, a picture of the moon. At Copperfield’s command, the other images remaining on screen fell away, leaving only the moon, the object chosen by the viewers, affixed to the glass.

This apparatus was only the second screen-used prop from Copperfield’s storied career to come to auction through Potter & Potter Auctions, as well as an important piece of magic history, if not television history. It is also one of only two items from Copperfield’s career that have been offered for sale with the express consent of the Copperfield organization.

Other highlights from the sale included an antique poster, “Thurston the World’s Greatest Magician. The Lady

and the Lion.” It was estimated at $10,000-$15,000 and made $43,200. This one-sheet poster depicted three

illusions from early in Thurston’s career. It was published by the Strobridge Litho. Co. in 1909.

This exhibition holds a special significance at the Barnes; in 1923, Dr. Albert Barnes named Laurencin one of “the best French women painters” after having

acquired several of her works, including “Still Life with Bowl and Fruit” (1907) on view in Room 10; “Woman with Muff” (1914) on view in Room 16; and “Head” (before

Featuring over 50 works by Laurencin from public and private collections around the world, the exhibit showcases paintings, works on paper, illustrated books, decorative objects, and ballet costumes, as well as works by Laurencin’s contemporaries and collaborators such as Max Ernst, André Mare, Jean Metzinger, and Francis Picabia. Arranged thematically and in roughly chronological order, the exhibition examines Laurencin’s interest in self-portraiture; her cubist milieu in prewar Paris; her difficult though productive period of exile in Spain; her designs for interiors and ballets; her fashionable portraits of women; and her inimitable vision of Sapphic modernism.

What s Stalling

Certain categories of furniture sales are starting to climb, but they remain nowhere near their peak in the ’80s and ’90s, when antique pieces hit peak popularity. It’s no surprise that their decline coincided with a burst of technological changes that changed the way we live and entertain. Combined with the continued trend of open concept, light, airy living spaces, I wouldn’t bet money on this trend changing anytime soon.

Continued from page 6 Toys: In this high-tech age, contrary to furniture, our new lifestyles have led to ongoing popularity in the vintage toy market. Of course, trends come and go in this market (Hello, Barbie), but classic, well-made toys continue to fetch top dollar.

The one thing that seems constant in this industry is

change, so for dealers and acquirers alike it’s wise to stay abreast of market trends. I suspect there are many people out there who regret not getting rid of their heavy mahogany armoires in the late 1980s. And while it’s hard to know what the future holds, it’s a good bet to dust off those Barbies now.

Slow and Steady

Jewelry: Unlike some furniture, most antique jewelry simply never goes out of style. High-end jewelry continues to have an ongoing “moment.” Both vintage and antique jewelry really stands the test of time and, therefore, will always fetch high prices.
