Collection Of Golden Age Comics Comes To Auction

Superhero Titles Include D.C. Comics’ Batman, Detective Comics, Flash, Superman And Wonder Woman

The Henry Anderson collection of Golden Age comic books, modest in size, at just 150 lots, but important in content, with comics that include Detective Comics #38 (April 1940) and Wonder Woman #1 (Summer 1942), both from D.C. Comics, will come up for bid on Saturday, Oct. 1, by Bruneau & Co. Auctioneers, beginning at 10 a.m. Eastern time.

The auction will be held online and in the Bruneau & Co. Cranston, R.I., gallery. Born in 1931, Henry Anderson grew up in the Edgewood neighborhood of Cranston, R.I., where he purchased comics from the local drugstore on Broad Street. From 1938 through 1947, he collected 163 comic books published by D.C. Comics, Dell, Fawcett, Fiction House, Harvey and others.

Anderson was mostly drawn to military comic books, having been 9 years old at the start of WWII in Europe. Of all the titles he collected, he followed Fiction House Jumbo Comics and Wings Comics the most. However, he did dabble with superhero titles, too, including D.C. Comics’ Batman, Detective Comics, Flash, Superman and Wonder Woman.

As he grew older, the comics became a collectible

Collector Chats With Peter S. Seibert Value Of Collector Forums

real. I just saw a medal posted that everyone called a fake until the real expert jumped in and pointed out that it was, in fact, genuine. Things ended well, but it was a lesson about the pile-on.

For several years, I have subscribed to a couple specialty collector forums. One of my myriad collecting interests is military history, and that is an area where the risk of fakery and trickery abounds.

The forums are a great place to learn from those who have invested time to understand the arcane aspects of certain types of collecting. I follow some regular contributors like a rock groupie because their knowledge is so deep. Reading what they say has saved me money and prevented me from making bad buys. It has also cost me money insofar when I did not read their advice until after making a bad purchase. One painful memory was the

That being said, I also follow the forums like one might follow a car or bike race, in order to see an accident coming. What I mean is that when collectors of varying backgrounds get into a debate, well, it can turn pretty ugly pretty quickly. I have seen it reach a point where people were ejected from the forums and threatening legal action. Mostly the fights seem to take place when collectors write at cross-purposes to each other and noses get out of joint. This is the curse of the internet world. One cannot always discern nuance and behavior in a typed posting. Thus, my cynical funny response can be misconstrued as nasty bullying. I see it happen a lot, and it makes me want to tell some folks to take 12 hours before nastily responding to a posting and cool off. A recent example was where someone

Another aspect of online forums is the ubiquitous pile-on when someone shows an item and the first responder calls it a fake. Often the item is fake, but I have also seen cases where the pile-on occurs and the item is genuine. In the world of antiques, a sin is to call something real when it is fake. A mortal sin is to call something fake when it is

The online forums are very useful tools and I hope that I have not scared people from joining them. I just think that like anything, one needs to filter the forum before accepting things as real.

Rare 37-Star American Flag From 1867 Realizes $10,625

A rare American flag with 37 stars, showing an interesting star pattern and in very good condition, made sometime in 1867 upon the admission of Nebraska as a state, sold for $10,625 at a huge, four-day “Rush to the Rockies” auction held Aug. 25 to 28 by Holabird Western Americana Collections LLC, online and live at Holabird’s gallery in Reno, Nev.

The 37-star flag is quite rare, as a 38-star flag was introduced to celebrate the 1877 Centennial with Colorado added later in the year. The flag sold by Holabird measured 48-by-90 inches and had hand-sewn stars. The flag company logo patch was sewn near a bottom grommet. It followed no known 37-star pattern. The “Great Star” pattern became official in July 1867.

The auction, boasting more than 2,000 lots in a wide array of collecting categories, was headlined by part two of the massive collection of Gary Bracken of Ponca City, Okla. Part one was held in July, where records were set in numerous categories, including Colorado and Oklahoma bottles, rare ancient coins and

Western tokens. More of the same were offered in part two.

Internet bidding was facilitated by iCollector.com, LiveAuctioneers.com, Invaluable.com and Auctionzip.com. Phone and absentee (left) bids were also accepted. All prices quoted in this report include the buyers’ premium.

A pictorial archive from the Mormon polygamist Peter Johnson, consisting of three framed portrait charcoal

sketches of Mormons imprisoned for polygamy (including Johnson), plus a fourth mammoth plate photo of the building of the Temple in Salt Lake, Utah, also framed, all from Box Elder County in Utah and ranging from the 1870s-1890s, changed hands for $4,750.

A rare original box with about 30 original candles from E. Schneider & Company, circa the 1880s, sold for $5,002. The candles would have been used by miners to light underground mines. A red label on the box read, “Original / Stearic Wax / Candles / Trade Mark / E. Schneider & Co.” Schneider was incorporated in 1881.

Paleo points (arrowheads) proved to be popular with collectors. A collection of around 90 points that included a wide variety of shapes and materials, including porphyrite rock, one large knife and one drill, high-grade flints of mostly lanceolate structure, in three display cases, hit $8,750.

Another collection of Paleo points, about 60 pieces in all boasting interesting color in stone, went for $7,812. The group included Midland, Goshen, Allen, Plainview and Cody material, and several of the points had certificates of authenticity from Partain, Jackson and Dwain Rogers.

A collection of more than 40 Archaic Period stone knives, including many fine Alibates and Haraheys, all show percussion and pressure flaking all in one display, finished at $2,375.

Rare antique bottles were also a hit with bidders. A rare, two-town whiskey flask from around 1895, for Thos. R. Heibler, misspelled on the

bottle as “Hiebler” (“Pure Old Sour Mash / Whiskey / Thos. R. Hiebler / Montrose & Ouray / Colo.”), 5.5 inches tall, rose to $4,125. A ca. 1898-1908 Vota & DeHeines pocket whiskey

flask, light purple with black lettering and a ground top with a metal cap, 5.75 inches tall, went to a determined bidder for $4,375. Johnnie DeHeines and Ludwig Vota were co-owners of the County Club saloon in Silverton, Colo.

Rare ancient Roman coins found their way into the list of top sellers on the last day A Sestarius of Galba coin sold for $6,037. Galba served as Roman emperor for just seven months (68-69 AD), having previously been governor of nearer Spain for eight years. The coin, in gorgeous EF condition, showed a legend encircled by an oak wreath on the reverse.

Twelve Caesars silver coins, all in about fine to fine condition, realized $5,878. The group

included an elephant denarius of Caesar celebrating his victory over the Gauls and August denarius celebrating his grandsons’ coming of age (son was poisoned by grandmother). An Aureus of Nero coin sold for $4,500. Nero (54-68 AD) persecuted Christians and famously executed Peter and Paul so they could become saints. Jupiter is shown seated on the reverse.

A group of 22 early Montana tokens left the room for $1,708, to include those from The Owl Saloon, Billings Bar, Midway Saloon, Brunswick Bar and many others.

“Fired Up” Brings Over 50 Innovators In Contemporary Glass Art

Over 50 contemporary glass artists breathe new life into nature’s most volatile medium in “Fired Up: Glass Today,” which recently opened at the Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art. Of more than 150 works on view, approximately half were created exclusively for this exhibition or will make their public debut at the Wadsworth. Special live events, including glass working demonstrations at an onsite hot shop, feature artists who will bring the magic of glass to Hartford, Conn. “Fired Up” will be on view through Feb. 5, 2023.

“This group of exceptional artists is taking risks, forging new paths, and inspiring people with glass as a means of expression,” said Brandy Culp, Richard Koopman Curator of American Decorative Arts at the

Wadsworth and curator of the exhibition. “The work in “Fired Up” is exceptional for its sculptural beauty and technical skill but also for its ability to make bold social statements.”

Pushing the Limits

Works by glass maestros such as Nancy Callan, Sidney Hutter, Dante Marioni, Lino Tagliapietra, and Tim Tate test the physical and aesthetic potentials of glass. At the same time, the works in the exhibition question cultural assumptions on a range of topics.

Among them are Kim Thomas’ “Cloud Capturing Apparatus”; Hannah Gibson’s “Recycling Narratives, A Tangible Hope,” made from recycled COVID-19 vaccine bottles; and Dan Friday’s installation, “Schaenexw

Local Connections in the International Year of Glass

“Fired Up is powerful for bringing a vast range of innovative glass works together and for connecting working artists with the public at the museum,” said Dr. Matthew Hargraves, director of the Wadsworth. “Not only will you see great works of art in this exhibition, you’ll also meet the people who bring these wonderful objects into being and see how they do it in real time.”

“Fired Up” joins offerings by institutions worldwide, including the Art Alliance for Contemporary Glass (AACG) and the United Nations, in celebration of the International Year of Glass 2022. The historic global initiative aligns with the 60th anniversary of Studio Glass and aims to honor glass in art, architecture, history, technology, industry, and science.
