Art Meets Nature In New Outdoor Sculpture Made Of Natural Materials At The Brandywine “Queen Anne’s Lace Pod” Is Installed On Harvey Run Trail A whimsical outdoor sculpture has sprung up on the Brandywine Conservancy & Museum of Art’s campus grounds for the summer. Now on view through Nov. 7, the “Queen Anne’s Lace Pod” is a temporary, site-specific installation by Virginia-based artist Ian Stabler. Made entirely of natural materials gathered and found onsite, the towering sculptural pod is located in Potts Meadow along the Brandywine’s Harvey Run Trail in Chadds Ford, Pa. Stabler was commissioned by the Brandywine River Museum of

Art as part of its ongoing sculptural program inviting artists to explore their responses to the local landscape. This is the fifth commissioned project in a series that has included Matthew Jensen’s “Alongside Tall Grasses” (2014), James Welling’s “Gradients” (2015), Dylan Gauthier’s “Highwatermarks” (2017), and Kathleen Vance’s “Brandywine River” (2018). Tying together the Brandywine’s dual mission of art and nature, the “Queen Anne’s Lace Pod” reflects Stabler’s response to the local Continued on page 6

THE

Collector Anecdotes And Antics

SLATINGTON MARKETPLACE

Wall Street’s Love Affair

Wall Street has always had a deep love affair with the antiques and collectibles trade. There is no shortage of headlines about certain antiques and collectibles fetching serious sums of money at auction. Art, antiquities, rare coins, luxury watches, and even wine have long been the target of wealthy investors looking to venture into other asset classes that are not tethered to the traditional financial markets. In the 1980s, when third-party coin grading took hold, it was Wall Street that attempted to convince Main Street that antiques and collectibles could be good longterm investments. It was also during this time that the high end art market started its monumental rise as the preferred alternate asset class of the ultra-rich. During this time, many acquisitions and consolidations started to take place among auction houses in the trade. By the 1990s, with the advent of

world of coins, but would comic book collectors care, and, more importantly, would it even matter if they did? At first, some collectors and dealers were not impressed with the idea of third-party grading and encapsulating comic books. Many collectors remarked that unlike coins, the whole point of collecting comic books is to be able to read them, and as long as they are permanently sealed in a plastic enclosure that is nearly impossible to do, unless you happen to be from the planet Krypton and have xray vision. Nonetheless, CGC was undeterred, as most dealers and investors believed that the market for vintage and graded comic books could explode if the market would simply accept and understand the third-party grading of comic books. Auction houses like Heritage Auctions and others were waiting in the wings to start promoting the concept, and along with the spectacular handling of the Marvel cinematic universe that started with the release of the first “Iron Man” movie in 2008, the rest is history. Today, certain collectors are looking at comic books as investments just like Wall Street viewed coins in the 1980s. Today, the Certified Collectibles Group has many multiple different grading companies under its direct control that grade and encapsulate everything from stamps to movie lobby cards to collectible trading cards. One of my favorites is PMG, which stands for Paper Money Guaranty. If you collect paper money, there is a chance that you know who PMG is, as they are one of the leading thirdparty grading companies devoted to the preservation of collectible paper money. On July 1, 2021, it was announced that an investment group led by Blackstone Tactical Opportunities will acquire a majority stake in the Certified Collectibles Group and all its subsidiaries. When the news broke I was buried in an avalanche of emails asking about my thoughts on the acquisition, which led to the creation of this article. Repeating the very first sentence of this article sums up my sentiment exactly: Wall

thing” in the collectibles marketplace. By this time it was apparent that the third-party grading of coins was massively successful. Thanks in part to companies like PCGS and NGC, coin grading was adopted not only by dealers and investors, but also the average collector who, instead of taking a chance by purchasing an ungraded coin, could get some level of protection by buying a graded specimen. NGC, which stands for Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (get used to acronyms if you are into graded collectibles), provided very tough competition to that of PCGS. Today, as was the case back then, both companies are highly reputable in the third-party grading market. It was the massive success of NGC that caused the company to start to look into other collecting markets that could benefit from third-party grading as well. The parent company of NGC, known as the Certified Collectibles Group, or CCG for short, already had their next target in mind. Reports began to surface in the late 1990s and early 2000s that the company was ready to make an announcement soon about the prospect of grading comic books. CGC, or Comic Guaranty Corporation as it is known, would premier in early 2000 and attempt to replicate the magic that its sister company, NGC, brought to the

eBay and the overall failure of Wall Street’s fascination with rare coins and antiquities (check out the history of the Merrill Lynch Athena Fund for more on this), it would appear that part of the antiques and collectibles trade was returning back to its humble origins of belonging to the collectors and dealers who cherished these precious artifacts. The advent of the internet and eBay transformed the antiques and collectibles trade more than any amount of Wall Street manipulation and financial capital ever could. And for a time being it seemed to have worked. I was an early seller on eBay, and I can tell you in the beginning there was no greater feeling. Both buyers and sellers were in total control, even among some of the horrible decisions that eBay was making at the time. However, smart investors and collectors knew that the good times would not last. eBay at first helped level the playing field among established auction houses that controlled the trade with an iron fist, but auction houses and wealthy investors had an advantage that no average collector ever had. The era of cheap money was just beginning, and as the “Dot Com Bubble” caught fire, it ignited, not only renewed financial interest in the trade, but also new ideas as to what should be the next “big

Tractors Will Sell At Auction As A Gift To Community And The Mission Of The Powdersville South Carolina YMCA Jimmy Wilson has donated a collection of 85 antique tractors, valued at approximately $500,000, to be auctioned off to support the Powdersville YMCA. Money raised will help fund a Child Development and Training Center (CDTC) in the Powdersville/Wren community of South Carolina. The YMCA’s CDTC will meet some of the community’s needs by providing three core services. First, it will offer childcare for infants through 4K with a focus on equipping children for kindergarten. Secondly, it will focus on helping train

family members in the community serving as primary caregivers. Lastly, it will provide support services to expecting and new mothers. “The YMCA is one of the best things that’s happened to the Powdersville community,” stated Wilson. “We celebrate that we can play a small part in the YMCA’s growth by contributing the proceeds from this auction of lifelong collecting to our community.” Wilson amassed an impressive assortment of tractors, which date back to 1919, that are restored to their original working condition. The collection includes a Hart Parr 30, 3 IHC 8-16 Junior Kerosene, International Harvester Titan

The auction is scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 9, at 300 Shiloh Road, Piedmont, S.C., the live and online auction will be handled by Aumann Auctions of Illinois. “This gift from Mr. Wilson is an unbelievable blessing for our YMCA, and we will use this to continue our mission for more life-changing work in the Powdersville community,” said Sid Collins, CEO of the YMCA of Easley, Pickens and Powdersville. “Mr. Wilson has a heart for this community, and we want to honor this gift by establishing a new CDTC in

countryside and his abiding interest in how art can be incorporated into the natural landscape. The artist’s initial inspiration for this project was a painting by the late artist George A. “Frolic” Weymouth, Brandywine’s co-founder titled “August” (1974), which features a hill covered in Queen Anne’s Lace flowers. “‘August’ is my favorite of Frolic’s works and one that I have linked with the Brandywine River Museum of Art,” said Ian Stabler regarding his vision for this project. “I see the design of the structure both as an homage to this beautiful plant and to Frolic’s enduring legacy at the Brandywine. The design references the bloom’s form turned upside down so that the visitor enters into the crown itself, while the stalk of the plant rises above them into the sky. I envision the Pod as a place people can venture to and from, experiencing the beauty and diversity of the land.” Stabler grew up in New York but frequently visited relatives in the Brandywine area since childhood. His deep affinity for the countryside and river contributed to his formation as a land artist and environmentalist. Stabler uses found wood and materials in his work to create ephemeral sculptures that reference and

signify the land and landscapes from which they originate. For the “Queen Anne’s Lace Pod,” Stabler weaved together branches, sticks and leaves gathered throughout the Brandywine’s campus to create the walls and windows of the structure. A bench built inside the pod allows people to sit while viewing the meadow and sky through door and window openings. In addition to the “Queen Anne’s Lace Pod,” the museum’s campus grounds are home to five bronze sculptures, including “Tipping Point” (2019), a recent addition by artist Rikki Morely Saunders that was unveiled at the Brandywine earlier this summer. The other bronze sculptures include “Boy with Hawk” (1971), by Charles Parks; “Miss Gratz” (1984), by J. Clayton Bright; “Helen” (1989), by André Harvey; and “R. B.” (2004), by Dan Ostermiller. The Brandywine River Museum of Art features an outstanding collection of American art housed in a 19thcentury mill building with a dramatic steel and glass addition overlooking the banks of the Brandywine. The museum is located on Route 1 in Chadds Ford, Pa. Up-to-date information about visiting the Brandywine can be found at www.brandywine.org/ now-open.

years ago should be worth close to seven figures at auction simply because someone says it is “rare” and encapsulated in a piece of plastic? In conclusion, I only report on what is, not on what should be. So ask me again what my thoughts are on Wall Street financiers coming into the collectibles trade, and I’ll simply answer with the truth. Your answer lies there in the 1980s with the advent of coin grading. That’s when it started. Until next time, I thank you for reading.

Street has always had a deep love affair with the antiques and collectibles trade. I do, however, understand that this is not the answer most of the people asking that question want to hear. They want me to speak on how this is possibly “wrong” or “controversial” in some manner. For those of you expecting me to answer in that manner, I would ask that you do your own research over how we ended up where we are today in the year 2021 where certain pop culture collectibles are routinely selling for high six and seven figures. We even have high profile auction houses investing into and creating their own grading companies to exploit the value of some of these speculative collectibles at present time. The Colonial Williamsburg Foundation has added to its renowned American and British silver collection a rare tankard made ca. 1795 by America’s bestknown colonial silversmith, Paul Revere (1734-1818) of Boston, Mass. Originally used as communal drinking vessels, tankards are among the largest forms produced in Revere’s shop. Approximately three dozen Revere tankards are known, and this one is typical of those from the 1790s, with tapering sides, midband, tall domed lid and pinecone form finials. “Colonial Williamsburg has long sought a significant example of Revere’s work,” said Ronald L. Hurst, the foundation’s Carlisle H. Humelsine chief curator and vice president for museums, preservation and historic resources. “With its impressive size, fine detail, and excellent condition, this tankard fills a significant void in our American silver holdings.” A beloved American patriot, Revere is well known for his activities during the Revolutionary War. Widely recognized as an exceptional colonial silversmith, Revere also engraved prints and bookplates,

ran an import business, established a bell and cannon foundry and started the first successful copper rolling mills in the new nation. Many of the objects made in his silver shop are well documented today due to the survival of his record books. Colonial Williamsburg’s Revere tankard stands nearly 10 inches tall and holds 48 ounces of liquid (usually wine, ale or cider), making it weighty to lift when full. Its apparent size is enhanced by a stepped domed lid and an elongated finial. The tankard has a lighter appearance thanks to its scrolled openwork thumbpiece. It lacks engraving, which leaves the identity of the original owner a mystery. Details such as the decorative features and the substantial weight (nearly 34 troy ounces) may one day provide ownership clues through careful study of Revere’s shop records.

“Paul Revere is the bestknown and most celebrated American silversmith,” said Janine E. Skerry, Colonial Williamsburg’s senior curator of metals. “A large, eye-catching object such as this tankard is a great way to connect with the public and draw both children and adults into the story of this amazing material and its role in our early history.” This Revere tankard was acquired entirely through the generosity of The Friends of Colonial Williamsburg Collections. It is now on view along with a ca. 1765 Revere silver porringer, another recent acquisition from the Joseph H. and June S. Hennage bequest announced earlier this year. Both objects are found in the exhibition “Silver from Mine to Masterpiece” in the Margaret Moore Hall Gallery at the DeWitt Wallace Decorative Arts Museum, one of the newly expanded Art
