Whoever made the first rudimentary implement used it to bridge the gap between ape and human, and both tools and humans evolved from there. For anyone from a craftsperson to a handyman, the right tools are a satisfying extension of one’s hand. They enable us to measure, plan, and fabricate our ideas into reality and efficiently tackle our repair and maintenance projects. “The Story of Tools,” a new book divided into three beautifully photographed chapters—Wood and Stone; Earth, Metal, and Glass; and Material, Cloth, and Decoration— tells the story of 25 featured tools through the eyes of those whose craft and livelihood depend on them. Axes, awls, drills, hammers, hole punches, chisels and more are examined by masters of handmade trades, from blacksmiths, silversmiths, and spoon makers to sculptors, gardeners, and architects. “The Story of Tools” celebrates the culture of the maker and is the perfect read for anyone who works with their hands and appreciates tools, ingenuity, and beautiful design. Coveted McLoughlin Christmas games include a circa-1899 “Game of Tobogganing at Christmas,” which is a book example. A circa-1878 Lilliputian streetcar made by Reed is also a book example and was formerly in the collection of Philadelphia’s legendary Perelman Toy Museum. Jeanne Bertoia, of Bertoia Auctions, observed that Tony Annese has always been a collector, but never a dealer. “He didn’t want his hobby to become his business. Occasionally, he would deaccession a piece, but that was rare. He always bought the way a collector would buy, focusing on condition and selecting toys that ‘spoke’ to him. He was patient and would wait for the right toy to come along, in the best possible condition. His methods have certainly paid off. Collectors are going to be thrilled when they see how beautiful his toys are. No upgrades will ever be required because they’re already at the top of the condition ladder.” The auction will be held at Bertoia’s gallery, 2141 DeMarco Drive, Vineland, N.J. All additional forms of bidding will be available, including absentee, phone, and live online through Bertoia Live and LiveAuctioneers. The Greshville Antiques and Fine Art gallery will hold its annual Berks County Art Show, titled “Realism to Abstract,” from Sunday, Oct. 6, through Sunday, Oct. 13. Work from traditional, realism, impressionism, modernism, and even fantasy and abstract art, and all from the school of artists of Berks County, Pa., will be featured. There will be fine works by Horses were a valuable and integral nationally recognized promi- part of daily life during Jacob nent local painters Ben Schoener’s lifetime, and the artist Austrian, Francis Devlan, honors them with this detailed Christopher Shearer, Frederick pen-and-ink drawing, ca. 1840. In this year’s show is a collection of works by Victor Shearer (1872-1951), along with his personal 100-year-old library. In “The Secret of Victor John Heyl Raser (1824-1901) was a realist Shearer,” an article by who painted this oil-on-canvas painting of a Barbara Goda, Shearer’s serene Berks County pasture, ca. 1870.

He would rather go without food than give them up.” The earliest works in the show are renditions by Jacob Schoener (1805-46), who studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in Philadelphia. In 1842, Schoener traveled to Key West and Havana, documenting his trip with an illustrated journal. His works are rare finds and include miniatures and portraits. From there the show shifts to the mid-20th century group of Berks County artists Frederick Sands Brunner, William Ferguson, Jack Coggins, and Alma Wood. These artists produced illustrative works, modernist, abstract and fantasy art. Of particular interest will be modernist paintings by William Ferguson (1905-85), who at an early age knew his

COLLECTOR CHATS WITH PETER S. SEIBERT This Week: All That Space Makes Me Nervous
So, I was looking at a popular shelter magazine the other day while waiting for a doctor’s appointment. I enjoy such publications, as they do provide insight into how the top of the top of the top live in their homes. It is that bit of a voyeur
century Ashcan painting! The images from the magazine also really bothered me because they bolster the point that we are in a post-collecting era in our country—a place where I am dinosaur. Despite the carbon footprint-friendly nature of buying antiques, collecting antiques is not generally popular for millennial audiences. Similarly, for the speculators who bought and sold antiques in the belief that the market would never end, they too have almost vanished into the woodwork. Finally, the celebrity collector of antiques seems to have faded away in favor of the latest chic

but more importantly about what they tell us about the collector. They are a window into the soul of the collector. The homes that I saw were truly devoid of anything truly antique. There were the ubiquitous “antique” (newly made and artificially aged) Asian and Middle Eastern imported wares that only a decorator could love. Similarly, the artwork tended to be contemporary and gallery driven. Now, I love contemporary art, but what was there was picked to match the drapes and had no real meaning or passion behind it. Oh, to see a bit of grandmother’s china or an early 20th
Still, if we believe that patterns repeat themselves and trends are circular, then in time it will come back. I just think we lose something if we continue to press for being minimal and informal.

that we all have in wanting to see across the hedge or inside the window. Now, I totally get that the images of these homes are professionally produced for us to see so that family pictures and clutter and empty cracker boxes are hidden away. And I celebrate that, as we all want our homes to look outstanding for company (or, as my mother and I joked, parties were an excuse to chase dust bunnies). However, I have to say that I find the absence of antiques or collections to be really disturbing. Collections are not only interesting for what the objects are
minimalism. What’s left are the collectors, that breed of acquisitor that has been around for millennia, those who acquire treasures to fill their homes with beautiful things (in their own eye) that reflect that passion for collecting. I had great hopes that “Downton Abbey” would perhaps bring back a revival in Edwardian opulence, that something would catch the glitterati and make them want to emulate the layered decorating effect in their own homes. I dreamed that tea sets would make a comeback, as would formal dining. I looked forward to walking into a dining room again and seeing corner cupboards filled with Canton or real Rose Medallion. Sadly, it did not quite happen.

Thomas Chandler’s Pottery Production McKissick Museum Of The University Of South Carolina Holds Innovative Exhibition Living in New England, there are not that many opportunities to see a lot of 19th-century stoneware from the Edgefield District of South Carolina, although I have viewed some great examples in museums such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. The Edgefield District is located in the western part of the state near the Georgia border, about 30 miles north of Augusta. The area was formed in 1785 and was primarily engaged in agriculture until a thriving pottery industry was developed in the 19th century. Both industries were in some ways conjoined, seeing that some of the Edgefield wares were manufactured for farming and household utilitarian needs. My interest in the Edgefield wares probably began in the early-2000s, when I first purchased a copy of Lura Woodside Watkins’ (1897-1982) book, “Early New England Potters and Their Wares.” Illustrated in the back of the book is an Edgefield stoneware face jug that was found in Portsmouth, N.H., in the early 20th century, now owned by the National Museum of American History at the Smithsonian Institute in
Washington, D.C. Most of the Edgefield face jugs in existence today are associated with enslaved AfricanAmerican potters in the 1850s and 1860s, but there does not appear to be that sort of connection in Portsmouth, even though Samuel Marshall’s (no birth record, d. 1749) pottery in Portsmouth did employ slaves before 1750. Their involvement is recorded in the book, “Black Portsmouth: Three Centuries of AfricanAmerican Heritage.” “Adam and Mercer were slaves of Samuel Marshall who worked in the pottery. They dug and weathered the clay; they milled and kneaded the clay; they made the glaze; they stacked the kiln; they stoked the fire for the kiln; and addition to all this manual labor, they turned pots on the wheel themselves.” Interestingly, this is not the only example of Edgefield pottery found in New England through the years. Cape Cod antiques dealer and former art director of the Heritage Museums and Gardens in Sandwich, Mass., Brian Cullity has acquired five different face jugs and a large jar made by Dave Drake (ca. 1801-75) in New England over the last 20 to 30 years. Drake was an enslaved African-American potter who threw pots, jugs, as well as other forms, and he

Chandler / Maker / Baltimore / August 12 / 1829.” One side of the churn is also dated “1829,” with the name “Mitchell Chandler” inscribed above the date. Courtesy of the Museum of Early Southern Decorative Arts.
My nephew, Jason, is holding the exhibit catalog, “Swag & Tassel: The Innovative Stoneware of Thomas Chandler,” outside the McKissick Museum at the University of South Carolina.

This Edgefield, S.C., stoneware face jug was found in Portsmouth, N.H., in the early 1900s. was also known for his literacy based on poems, dates and signatures that adorn some of the forms he made. All of the objects acquired by Cullity came from various contexts of ownership throughout New England. More recently, though, while visiting Boston in August 2018, my niece Alexis and I found an Edgefield jug in an antique and collectible marketplace in Cambridge. We were told the jug was recently discovered in an old estate within the Boston area. Afterwards, we visited the MFA Boston and thought about the jug that we had just found while viewing three Edgefield face jugs, along with a huge jar made by Drake that are all on display in the museum’s Art of the Americas Wing. However, after reading about the Edgefield wares for many years and admiring objects that sold at auction in the South and Mid-Atlantic regions, I was thrilled to learn last summer that an exhibit had been assembled at the McKissick Museum at the University of South Carolina in Columbia by guest curator Philip Wingard and project director Saddler Taylor. The exhibit highlights the wares made by Thomas Chandler, an influential white potter, who is considered by many today to be the most talented potter employed in Edgefield. The exhibition was assembled from both private and museum collections, more than 100 pieces, and took over 20 years to complete. I finally found the time to visit the McKissick Museum with my nephew, Jason, in June 2019, and the Chandler exhibit was more impressive than I had ever imagined. We were also pleasantly surprised to find that a catalog had been published to coincide with the exhibit, and wares made by different potters in Edgefield are displayed in other areas of the museum. Thomas Chandler’s Stoneware Born in Drummondtown (now Accomack), Va., Thomas Mitchell Chandler Jr. (1810-54) learned the potter’s craft in Baltimore, Md., when his family moved to the city in 1817. Chandler’s father, Thomas Chandler Sr., was a Windsor chair maker, and he bought property that was located near some of the potters in Baltimore. Henry Remmey Sr. lived next door, and other potters like William Morgan, whom Chandler worked with, were located only a few blocks away. Chandler was exposed to a great deal of potters during this period, and his earliest known forms represent this exposure in Baltimore. There was also red earthenware made in Baltimore during this period,

In time, Chandler developed into an extraordinary potter. In fact, he is thought to have possibly been a descendant of John Chandler of Fulham, England, who worked
for John Dwight (ca. 1637-1703) for a period and was one of England’s first 17th-century stoneware potters. I viewed a few examples of Chandler’s production in the summer of 2018 while visiting the William C. and Susan S. Mariner Collection of

Southern Ceramics at the Museum of Early Southern Decorative Arts (MESDA) in Winston-Salem, N.C. Among the objects on display is a churn made by Chandler that I consider among the most significant pieces of American stoneware in existence today. The churn depicts a landscape scene with a farmhouse, an outbuilding, a cow and a woman churning butter, representing the Chandler family farm or homestead in Virginia. Inscribed on the base of the churn, “Thomas M. Chandler / Maker / Baltimore / August 12 / 1829.” One side of the churn is also dated “1829,” with the name “Mitchell Chandler” inscribed above the date. Mitchell Chandler was Thomas’ uncle, and Chandler likely made the churn as a memento for his aunt and uncle when he would return from Baltimore visiting the family estate in Drummondtown. The churn had descended through the family until it was acquired a few years ago by the Mariners. According to an article written by Philip Wingard for the 2013 issue of “Ceramics in America,” titled, “From Baltimore to the South Carolina Backcountry: Thomas Chandler’s Influence on 19thCentury Stoneware,” “Thomas Chandler left Baltimore in 1829 and between 1829 and 1832 may have traveled as an itinerant potter. In 1832, he was in Albany, N.Y., where he enlisted in the United State Army. The Army sent Chandler Continued on page 11

Palmer Museum Of Art Announces Landmark Bequest Of Benefactor Barbara R. Palmer Penn State University To Receive Close To 200 Important Paintings And Other Works Of Art The Palmer Museum of Art at Penn State is honored to be the recipient of nearly 200 works of art as part of the estate of Barbara R. Palmer, longtime benefactor, beloved friend, and champion of the museum, who passed away in January 2019. The bequest of her world-class collection will elevate the already significant national reputation of Penn State’s art museum. “Both Penn State and central Pennsylvania have been immeasurably enriched through Barbara and Jim Palmer’s commitment to the arts and the community, and their legacy will live on through all who experience the Palmers’ collection on our campus,” said Penn State President Eric J. Barron. “The university is deeply honored that Barbara chose to entrust these works to our institution, and we look forward to preserving and sharing this generous gift.” Widely considered one of the finest private collections of American art in the country, the collection includes works by well-known 19th-century artists and boasts strengths in Ashcan realism and Stieglitzcircle modernism, as well as works by prominent artists of the mid- to late 20th century.
Highlights include major paintings by Frederic Edwin Church, Winslow Homer, Martin Johnson Heade, John Sloan, Georgia O’Keeffe, Marsden Hartley, Thomas Hart Benton, and many other notable American artists. Also represented are significant works on paper by Mary Cassatt, Jacob Lawrence, John Marin, Charles Demuth, and Chuck Close, as well as several major sculptures by Seymour Lipton and an impressive collection of late 20th-century ceramics. Palmer Museum Director Erin M. Coe described the landmark bequest as “truly transformative. It will shape, even define, the museum’s presentation of American art for generations to come.” Barbara and her husband, James, began building a private collection in 1978 with the purchase of a self portrait by contemporary painter Jerome Witkin, whom they had heard lecture at the Museum of Art at Penn State the prior spring. Working primarily with galleries in New York, the couple acquired works by noted American artists over the next two decades until Jim’s death in 2001. The Palmers began donating works of art to the Museum of Art at Penn State long before the official unveiling of the museum that bears their name in 1993. Barbara continued the practice after Jim’s death in 2001, donating paintings by early 20thcentury American artists George Luks, Arthur Dove, and Joseph Stella and an extensive group of drawings, maquettes, and major works by sculptor Seymour Lipton, among other gifts, in 2002 and 2005. “Barbara and Jim Palmer’s extraordinary Thomas Anshutz’s “A Challenge (Portrait of generosity lives on at Rebecca H. Whelen),” ca. 1907, is a Penn State,” said Barbara pastel-on-canvas, 30-by-24 inches, and a Korner, dean of the bequest of James R. and Barbara R. Palmer. College of Arts and

“Shell Games” Smack Dab In The Middle: Design Trends Of The Mid-20th Century By Donald-Brian Johnson Admit it, those lazy, hazy, crazy days of summer are over. Autumn’s here. Time to rinse out the swimsuits, deflate the floaties, and figure out what to do with that beach bag bulging with souvenir sea shells. Hmmm. Well, you could always make something. No kidding. Items made entirely of shells, covered with shells, or just dotted with the occasional accent shell have been tops as summery souvenirs since at least the 1700s. In 1703, a London woman offered her services as an instructor in the delicate art of “shell work in flowers, sconces, and rocks.” Mary Granville Delany, another turn-of-the-18th-century Londoner, was renowned for her challenging shell projects, among them a chapel ceiling with shells woven into a pattern resembling flower garlands. The fascination with shell craft as a refined art form continued well into the Victorian era. The 1876 guide, “Ladies’ Fancy Work,” offered up detailed instructions (plus

glue recipes) for using shells to form “exquisitely beautiful articles of adornment for parlor or dressing table.” As one British publication of the time put it, shells were “so brightly clean, so ornamental to a boudoir” that shell craft was a pursuit “peculiarly suited to the ladies.” Tell that to the mariners. During the 1800s, many seafaring men brought “sailor’s valentines” to the girls back home. These octagonal wooden boxes had covers decorated with elaborate shell designs. Appropriate sentiments (e.g., “To My Sweetheart”) were picked out in shells of a contrasting color. Romantic legend has it that, in their downtime, these water-weary voyagers not only carved the boxes, but also came up with their intricate shell-patterned lids. Just another way of whiling away the hours between monsoons. A more likely (if less sighinducing) theory is that even the Ancient Mariner, after spending months at sea, knew better than to return to his sweetheart empty-handed. Last-minute peace offerings were called for, and the Caribbean craftsmen of Barbados were happy to oblige. The labels found on many “sailor’s valentines” list their actual source as “Native Manufacturers in Fancy Work.” By the mid-20th century, sailors were no longer crafting (or at any rate purchasing) their valentines, and other forms of shell art had become a bit less refined. Now, any gift shop claiming even the slightest proximity to water wasn’t complete without a shellcraft selection. Vacationers loved shell souvenirs. They were fun to look at and cleverly made. They were inexpensive, so no need to shell out a bundle. And best of all, travelers could take them home and display

A trove of more than 10,000 pieces of the original art for Jim Davis’ iconic “Garfield” comic strip, with daily strips valued upwards of $500 each and Sunday strips considerably more, will be offered exclusively through Heritage Auctions over the coming years in a series of signature, monthly and weekly Sunday Internet Comics, Animation and Art Auctions. The collection features individual daily and Sunday strips by Jim Davis, the artist behind the most widely syndicated feature in the world, that reached two million readers daily. Davis created the strip in 1978. “Garfield is one of the most popular comic strips of all time, and has been for decades,” said Jim Halperin, co-chairman of Heritage Auctions. “It has matured into a wildly successful franchise, evolving from the strip that has appeared in newspapers around the world to a television show, multiple movies and an empire of licensed products. Collectors who pursue these strips by Jim Davis see the opportunity to acquire an important part of comic art history.” In November 2011, the iconic strip switched to digital production, so the ink on Bristol board “Garfield” originals offered by Heritage represent all that will ever be created. “I’m very excited about my exclusive relationship with Heritage Auctions,” stated Davis. “I’ve always taken my responsibility to the strip seriously, so it’s gratifying to know that I’m reaching the ‘serious’ comic collectors with the help of the fine folks at Heritage.” Heritage Auctions’ next comics signature auction is

industry a competitive advantage when considering its impact in the national picture of historic American pottery. The stoneware made in Edgefield is special. The wares represent more than just an object. They not only serve as a connection to the people who made the pottery, but they also speak for a time and place in American history that it many ways no longer exists today.
