Harmon (1935-89) was born in Philadelphia, Pa. He graduated from the Philadelphia Museum School and Temple’s Tyler School of Art. Beloved by many, Harmon taught in the Philadelphia School District, at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, at the University of the Arts, and at Drexel University. Harmon was primarily a portrait painter. His portraits were commissioned by Philadelphia jazz organist Jimmy Smith and Mayor Richardson Dilworth. Harmon was considered a Renaissance man by friends and colleagues for his interests not only in art but music and theater as well. His work has a loose expressionist style that can be related to the work of Alice Kneel. The colorful art of Bernard Harmon will be the first selling exhibition at the inn. Exhibitions will change, just as the seasons do. The Centre Bridge Inn is located at 2998 River Road, New Hope, Pa. COLLECTOR CHATS WITH PETER S. SEIBERT By Peter Seibert pricing is truly all over the nearly fatally harmed is miliThe antiques market is definitely variable and particularly now as prices are up and down all over the place. We see strong prices paid on some categories of items and then others that are flatter than a pancake. If you collect solely as an investment, I have to believe you are probably having kittens by now with all the changes. For me, as someone who haunts both the antique shops and the virtual world, the
place. I collect Native American objects, and while that has been a market subject to a lot of speculation, it seems even more so now. One can find real gems on eBay next to objects that are outrageously priced. The influx of eastern European produced reproduction Indian beadwork has really harmed the market a great deal, and as a result a lot of period work has disappeared because of the taint of the bad stuff. Another area that has been
taria. I wrote about purchasing an expensive military item from a noted online dealer about two years ago only to discover, through extensive online blogs and information, that it was part of a large group of fakes. It soured me on collecting military, and while I think it is very cool to collect, one has to do so with a sturdy constitution. The flip side is that I still think bargains exist in things like tools, toy trains, and primitives. Some old time collectors
Hitting A “Home Run At Auction “What’s It Worth Antiques Minute By Mike Ivankovich Many record prices for antiques and collectibles are set at auction and not through private sale. Whereas most private sales involve an undisclosed sale price, auction
sales are generally public record. Private sales are typically one-on-one transactions. The seller sets the price, and the buyer has three options: pay the asking price, walk away from the transaction, or make a counteroffer. Either way, auction sales are mostly public and highly animated events. Auctioneers advertise, promote, and hype their sales to attract as many potential bidders as possible. And once auction day arrives, let the bidding begin. This is
are now passing on, and I have seen items in these categories that are downright bargains. I would jump on those. Good jewelry seems to be a really tough one. At Adamstown, I purchased a piece for my wife. It was priced fairly, but in my mind it should have sold a long time before. It’s a case where style and fashion, particularly with even old, high quality pieces, is very different today than it had been. I would rather see a quality old set than to look at some of the tinny jewelry being sold in the malls.
Regular readers know in particular that I am a huge fan of wearing vintage watches. So few people use watches to tell time anymore, instead using their phones for that purpose, making a wind-up watch a statement of cool. So while I think there are bargains to be found out there and areas that are great to collect, I do see a tremendous variation in the market. My advice remains to work with good dealers and auction

where the “competitive bidding process and “the market take over. Whether it’s the fear of losing a special item, personal egos, a loss of financial perspective, or temporary insanity, once the auction bidding starts, anything can happen, and usually does, on best-of-the-best items. What’s it worth? Recently a trade paper reported that a 1966 Grateful Dead concert poster with a pre-sale estimate of $1,000, sold for $37,500, while at another auction, a group of 290 publicity photographs from a Manhattan nightclub with a pre-auction estimate of

Scott Antique Markets in Washington Court House, Ohio, is the name of the game for shoppers looking for toys. Each building brought a new era of play to the market, from model trains of varying scales in one building to movie collectibles in another and tin toys and dolls in yet another building, each one bringing their own unique memories along during the recent Aug. 24, 25, and 26 show. “The way collectible items usually work is that the era that the buyer was playing with those toys, that’s what they collect when they get to be 30-40-50 years old and they have some disposable money to spend on fun things,” said Nancy Meeker, a toy vendor from Cortland, Ohio, that specializes in early toys. “They’re looking for their own childhood things.” Meeker said the toys she sells a lot include Fisher Price toys from the 1930s and 1940s, Disney toys from the late 1920s and 1930s and dolls Small shoppers look through an assortment of toys at from the 1950s Scott Antique Markets recent show in Washington Court House, Ohio. and 1960s.

Record-Shattering Mickey Mantle Jersey Stuns Collecting World In $8.6 Million Heritage Sports Platinum Night Auction 1964 World Series Home Run Jersey Sells For $1.32 Million Over a half-century after Mickey Mantle established the World Series home run record with his 17th and 18th in the 1964 World Series, the jersey he wore as he launched those long balls set a record of its own at $1,320,000, the highest price ever paid at auction for a Mantle game-used jersey. The price shatters the standing Mantle record of $486,000 set by Heritage Auctions 18 months ago. The result marks just the fourth seven-figure sale of a gameworn jersey in sports collectibles auction history. This two-day sale was held on Aug. 18 and 19. “That’s the power of
Platinum Night,” explained Chris Ivy, director of Sports Auctions for Heritage, referring to the high-value, lowvolume format of the Summer Sports Collectibles Auction. “For six- and seven-figure sports collectibles, there simply is no alternative for consignors looking to rocket past market norms.” A 1927 Babe Ruth home run #48 baseball, signed and notated in Ruth’s hand brought $192,000. A pair of 1952 Topps Mickey Mantle rookie cards gave the “the Commerce Comet” a sweep of the Platinum Night medals podium, with PSA-graded examples at NM-MT+ 8.5 and NMMT 8 achieving sale prices of
$810,000 and $420,000, respectively. The Dead Ball Era came alive as well, as a 1914 Boston Garters Ty Cobb, PSA VG-EX 4, PSA VG-EX 4, sold for $204,000, and a 1914 Cracker Jack Christy Mathewson The game ticket from Michael Jordan’s NBA drew $144,000 in PSA EX debut set a new record for ticket stubs, selling 5 condition. for $33,600. The gridiron market remained red-hot on $28,800. Two more major hobby Platinum Night, with Emmitt Smith’s 1989 Florida Gators records fell on Saturday night, jersey soaring to $48,000, and as Michael Jordan’s NBA debut a 1959 LSU Tigers jersey worn set a new high-water mark for by Billy Cannon during his ticket stubs at $33,600, while a Heisman-winning season circa 1918 photograph by commanded $24,000. In addi- Charles Conlon raised the tion, a 2001 photo-matched record for unsigned Babe jersey from recent Hall of Ruth photographs to $78,000. A 1922 Babe Ruth gameFame inductee Randy Moss drew a world-record price of used and signed bat, PSA/DNA
Mickey Mantle’s 1964 World Series jersey set a record when it sold for $1,320,000.
This 1914 Boston Garters Ty Cobb card, PSA VG-EX 4, PSA VG-EX 4, sold for $204,000. GU 9.5, sold for $180,000; a photo-matched 1952 Ted Williams game-worn Boston Red Sox jersey, MEARS A10, went for $90,000; and the only known example of a 1914
Boston Garter color Walter Johnson card, SGC 30 Good 2, sold for $72,000. Bill Russell’s game-worn Boston Celtics warm-up jacket, circa early- to mid-1960s, sold for $45,600, and the first signed basketball from the 1992 Barcelona Olympics USA “Dream Team” realized $38,400. Vincentown Garden Club To Hold Antiques Show On Oct. 20 Southampton School Will Host One-Day Event The Vincentown Garden Club (VGC) is sponsoring an antiques and vintage collectibles show to be held in the Southampton School #3 on Saturday, Oct. 20. The school is at 100 Warrior Way, Vincentown, N.J., located in Southampton Township and Burlington
much more. The show will run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the schoolhouse gymnasium, located just off of Main Street. Admission is $3, and ample free parking is available. Planned as a fundraiser for the VGC, the proceeds will
help support the group’s various beautification and preservation projects. While exploring ideas in how to raise funds, the club decided that an antiques show would be an ideal fit for its mission and a way to give community members less familiar with antiques exposure to the ways they can be used to decorate.
Several organizations in Burlington County and in the region once sponsored antiques shows and are no longer doing so, creating a void in the market. The VGC has filled a needed role for this little Southampton town. The Southampton School #3 lies just west of Route 206, about midway between routes
38 and 70, and County Route 616 (Church Road) leads directly there from the east or west. Surrounded by farmland and comprising just a few streets, Vincentown’s two main thoroughfares are lined by elegant Victorian-era houses. To learn more, readers may call Jane Shelton-Yosko at 609-841-2984.

Juan Gris’s “The Musician’s Table” Recently Acquired New Gift From Leonard A. Lauder Now On View The Metropolitan Museum of Art recently announced the addition of Juan Gris’s remarkable “The Musician’s Table” (1914) to the Leonard A. Lauder cubist collection. Acquired with funds given by Leonard A. Lauder, this major example of Gris’s exploration in papier collé joins the Leonard A. Lauder cubist collection, now totaling 83 works by Georges Braque, Juan Gris, Fernand Léger, and Pablo Picasso. “Since the landmark gift in 2013, Leonard A. Lauder has augmented the collection with five additional masterworks of modern art. His continued commitment and outstanding generosity to the museum is exemplary, and it continues a nearly 150-year tradition of support from
donors and collectors that is critical to the success of the Met’s mission,” said Daniel H. Weiss, president and CEO of the Met. “’The Musician’s Table’ deepens the rich holdings of the Leonard A. Lauder cubist collection, the most important of its kind. It joins six other collages from this pivotal moment of the artist’s career, forming an unparalleled representation of his experimental forays into this medium. Combined with the critical contributions to scholarship made by the award-winning 2014 Leonard A. Lauder Cubism catalogue and the ongoing activities of the Leonard A. Lauder Research Center for Modern Art, this gift further enables us to explore the depth of influence this transformative period had on modern art,” stated Max Hollein, director of the Met. The Metropolitan Museum of Art will celebrate the 150th anniversary of its founding in 2020 and also announced that one part of its celebration will be to further evolve its encyclopedic collection in a number of areas. “Our 150th
anniversary offers an opportunity to celebrate, to thank our supporters and visitors, and, importantly, to continue to expand the artistic excellence of our collections and the complex cultural narratives they tell,” said Hollein. “And to help launch the Collections Initiative, there is no one who better exemplifies the spirit of giving that has fostered the growth of the Met and the benefits it provides to the public than Leonard A. Lauder with his continued support of the collections as well as curatorial positions and the Research Center.” “It is an honor and a responsibility to help build the resources of a great public institution,” noted Lauder. “I am inspired by previous generations of supporters who have contributed to making the Met’s collections among the greatest in the world. As the Collections Initiative begins this autumn to mark the 150th anniversary of the Met, I am pleased to step forward to continue to build and deepen the museum’s holdings for generations to come.”

a clever message, the headline of the journal that rests on the table is made from newspaper mastheads from two different dates and refers to the mounting tensions of 1914 but also to rivalries between the Cubists. Along with the violin yet to be played and notation sheet awaiting a score, the composition suggests Gris’s hope for peace and harmony with his fellow artists. This magnificent new acquisition is now on view in Gallery 908 along with other hallmarks of the Met’s modern art collection. Juan Gris’s (Spanish, 1887–1927) “The Musician’s Table,” 1914, is charcoal, wax crayon, gouache, cut-andpasted printed wallpaper, blue and white laid papers, transparentized paper, newsprint, and brown wrapping paper, and selectively varnished on canvas, courtesy of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, Leonard A. Lauder cubist collection, purchase, Leonard A. Lauder gift, 2018.
Georges Braque and Pablo Picasso invented papier collé in 1912 as yet another avantgarde challenge to the traditional illusionism in painting and to embrace the realities of modern mass culture. Juan Gris (Spanish, 1887–1927), however, was the first to exhibit a cubist collage in a public exhibition, drawing immediate notoriety and making his name as an avant-garde artist. Between December 1913 and October 1914, the artist moved away from painting to concentrate on this novel, hybrid technique, producing some 40 works with
cut and pasted papers, oil paint, gouache, and various drawing media. Decorative wallpapers and allusions to the pulp fiction novels Fantomas particularly inspired him, and he carefully organized his compositions around the textural and symbolic properties of his materials. His works from 1914 have been praised as the summit of the artist’s oeuvre by Cubist scholar John Golding, who wrote that they “represent the climax of Gris’s exploration of the intellectual possibilities of Cubism and of the new techniques it has introduced.” Within the carefully cut and pasted layers of “The Musician’s Table,” Gris inserted

Davey Crockett’s Bowie Knife Deposited To The Peale Museum Sells For $64,625 second floor of the Pennsylvania State House, also known as “Independence Hall.” Visitors could peruse the skeletons, fossils, taxidermies and paintings, accompanied by a well-organized, printed pamphlet. Charles Peale retired in 1810, leaving the museum in the care of his sons, who opened branches in New York City and Baltimore. Crockett and the Peale family began their relationship during Crockett’s 1834 tour. A May 1834 letter by Helen Chapman, a visitor to the Peale museum in New York City, describes Crockett as being a guest of the institution. This particular branch was administered by Rembrandt Peale, a well-known painter in his own right, painting George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Chief Justice John Marshall, and others. Crockett likely sat for the portrait of him attributed to “Peale” during his time in New York. This portrait remained in the possession of the Crockett family up to as least 1950, described by Crockett’s descendant as having been painted by Rembrandt Peale. Crockett’s 1834 tour took him to first to Baltimore, Philadelphia, and New York City. In his own account, he does not mention visiting the institution in Philadelphia or Baltimore, though he describes the New York branch as having “curiosities...above

It would seem likely that the knife was given as a token of respect and admiration from Crockett to America’s most famous historical and horticultural institution. The label
references to the Crockett knife disappear. The weapon itself is a powerful piece of evidence that it is the gift presented to Crockett. Though the blued and gilt finish as well as the eagle and star motifs suggest a Federalist Period, the pommel takes the form of a lion rather than the typical eagle. This alludes to the nickname given to Crockett in Pauldings’ play nearly half a decade before his arrival to the state.
states that the knife was simply “deposited” at the institution, indicating that the knife was simply left for safekeeping and Crockett intended to claim it later. The Peale Museum operated in Philadelphia until 1841, when rising admission costs forced the closure of the institution as well as the sale of its entire collection, with the exception of the portraits. The minutes of the American Philosophical Society from
1833-46 list no references to the knife. This indicates that the knife was personally presented to a member of the Peale family. The knife is recorded once again in 1887, when it passed to Colonel Archibald Loudon Snowden (1835-1910). Snowden rose to public prominence through his position as a registrar for the U.S. Mint. After the Civil War, Snowden continued his political career, serving as chief coiner from 1866 to 1877, then he was appointed by President Rutherford B. Hayes as postmaster of Philadelphia. Two years later he accepted the position of director of the Philadelphia Mint, retiring in 1885. The provenance of the Crockett knife prior to Col. Snowden’s possession is unclear. In his capacity as marshal of the Centennial Celebration, he was in close contact with many of the organizations participating in the
event, including the American Philosophical Society, by whom he was invited to an exclusive banquet attended by President Grover Cleveland. As marshal, Snowden presented a toast, though there is no mention in the official record of any presentations to Snowden. Considering his position in the Constitution Centennial celebration coupled with an affidavit provided by the family stating that the Crockett knife was acquired by Snowden in “approximately 1887,” it is more than likely that he was presented the knife as a token of gratitude for his service. The knife remained in Snowden’s possession until his death in 1912, when it passed to his daughter, Caroline Smith Snowden (1865-1960), who had married Stuyvesant Wainwright (1863–1930) in 1889. It had remained with the Wainwright family for 141 years. More on this auction will appear in a future issue.

A knife, 11.5 inches long, slightly curved, 1.5 inches wide, early “Bowie”-type clip point blade etched with American patriotic motifs on a blued ground with gilt highlights from the Peter Wainwright collection, sold at Cowan’s Auctions on Sept. 12 for $64,625 (est. $100,000-$150,000). It has a brass crossguard and counterguard on right and finely fluted ivory grip surmounted by a boldly rendered cast and gilt lion pommel. David “Davy” or “Davey” Crockett was revered and celebrated as a frontiersman. His fame as a sharpshooter and hunter was the subject of several plays, books, and almanacs, including James Kirke Paulding’s “The Lion of the West,” which premiered in 1831. This knife was likely presented during Crockett’s 1834 pre-election three-week congressional campaign tour of the eastern United States. According to the label, the knife was deposited in the “Peale’s Philadelphia Museum,” founded in 1786 by renowned American painter and illustrator Charles Wilson Peale (1741-1827). Patronized by Thomas Jefferson and Benjamin Franklin, Peale’s museum quickly became a popular attraction. In 1794, it was moved from Peale’s home to the American Philosophical Society building, where it remained until 1802. Its collections were transferred to the
