Rose Valley Museum And Decorative Arts Trust To Present Conference Celebrating The Arts And Crafts Movement Two-Day Event Planned In Media, Pa., For Nov. 6 And 7

The Rose Valley Museum at Thunderbird Lodge. Photo by Carl Finkbeiner. “The Arts and Crafts Movement from John Ruskin to William Lightfoot Price” is the title of an upcoming two-day conference presented by the Rose Valley Museum and the Decorative Arts Trust in Media, Pa., on Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 6 and 7. The two organizations are pleased to collaborate on this oneof-a-kind conference celebrating the Arts and Crafts Movement in Rose Valley, Pa. The program begins on Nov. 6 at 11 a.m. with the long-awaited public dedication of the William Lightfoot Price Historical Marker across from where Price built his groundbreaking Thunderbird Lodge. When architect Price came to Rose Valley at the turn of the 20th century, there were 12 small houses, one larger stone house, and two old mills. By the time of his death in 1916, Price had transformed Rose Valley and the greater Philadelphia region with dozens of impressive residences and buildings in the Arts and Craft style that would influence contemporaries and inspire admirers for years to come. After local and state leaders gather to laud the impact of Price’s ingenuity, conference attendees are invited to the Hedgerow Theatre to hear lectures by distinguished speakers from across the country. Presenters will

share research on acclaimed 19thand 20th-century English and American architects, designers, and thinkers, including John Ruskin, Frank Furness, and Price. Saturday concludes with tours of the Thunderbird Lodge (home of the Rose Valley Museum) and nearby historic architecture. The schedule on day two includes lectures about influential artist and textile designer William Morris, innovative craftsman C. R. Ashbee, the three Ardens in Delaware, and John Ruskin’s European travels. The program concludes with a lively panel discussion of the current Arts and Crafts Movement. Light refreshments will be served and luncheon provided throughout the conference. The conference schedule and lecturers include the dedication of the William Lightfoot Price PHMC Historical Marker at Rose Valley Road and Prices Lane with Tim Plummer, mayor of Rose Valley and president of the Rose Valley Centennial Foundation, and other local and state dignitaries; “‘The Philadelphia Narrative,’ Frank Furness to Will Price and Beyond” with George Thomas, lecturer in architecture at Harvard University, partner in Civic Visions; “‘Hand, Head, and Heart,’ John Ruskin and

the Origin of the Arts and Crafts Movement” with Jim Spates, professor emeritus of sociology at Hobart and William Smith College, companion in the Guild of St. George, codirector of the Ruskin Society of North America; “‘The Art That Is Life,’ Tours of Thunderbird Lodge and Rose Valley” with Rose Valley Museum guides; “‘News From Nowhere,’ William Morris, C. R. Ashbee, and the American Arts and Crafts Colonies” with Ryan Berley,

curator of the Rose Valley Museum; “‘You Are Welcome Hither,’ The Three Ardens and the Single Tax Community” with Barbara Macklem, Arden Archives representative; “‘Nothing Can Be Beautiful Which Is Not True,’ Nature, Beauty & The Old Road Trip of 1882” with Jim Spates; and “‘Make it About Now,’ The Arts and Crafts Movement Today,” a discussion with speakers and participants, moderated by Thomas Guiler, director of Museum Affairs at the Oneida Community Mansion House. On Monday, Nov. 8, The Arden Craft Shop Museum in Arden, Del., is offering an optional walking tour of their single tax community, including luncheon and a visit to the museum. Conference attendees can sign up for this optional tour during registration. Registration is $80 per day or $125 for two days for Rose Valley Museum and Decorative Arts Trust members. For nonmembers, registration is $100 per day or $150 for two days. Registration is $50 for two days for students. Registration opens in midSeptember. Register at www.rosevalleymuseum.org or by calling 484444-2961. Please note, program dates and details are subject to change. A limited number of scholarships are available for students and young professionals studying 20th-century architecture and decorative arts. They are encouraged to contact the Decorative Arts Trust at thetrust@decorativeartstrust.org for information. For additional information, email info@rosevalleymuseum.org.

We all want to understand the antiques marketplace in order to try and get ahead of the curve of what is hot and what is not. It’s the same practice that one sees with the stock market or nearly any other speculative item. Covid has put us in a position of not knowing from day to day what the future of antiques will be on a daily basis. We worry that high gas prices or inflation or stagflation or fear of contagion will all keep customers away. I would offer a few thoughts from the peanut gallery about all of this. First is that for collectors, those who have it in their blood and soul, there are relatively few obstacles to keep them away from their mission. Yes, antiques are not vital commodities like food or fuel, but as collectors, we are seeking out things all the time. Second is that the casual collectors who see antiques as a recreation still want to be out shopping. After all, who wants to sit home on a rainy Sunday when they can hit the local antiques market? So what are my experiences in a few areas?

Conversely, existing collectors may be pursuing small items such as coins and photography. These store well, and it’s easy to have a big collection in a small space. The impact of internet shopping. While the exercise of going out and shopping remains strong for many of us, I do think the convenience of virtual shopping at 10 p.m. on a Thursday remains a driver in the virtual market. Money burning a hole in our pockets, despite the downward spiral of the antiques market since 2008. I would argue that many of us still believe in the value of antiques and that owning a Chippendale chair provides far more pleasure than a virtual stock. Right or wrong? I welcome you to figure it all out!

Post Mid-Century Modern is Hot I was in a store in Havre de Grace, Md., that focuses on 1960s-70s items, and there were people in line to buy things. The store’s success was definitely built upon the owner(s) having a great eye but also in being able to find quantities of items. That seems to be a formula for success in this market. Roman Coins I have collected Roman coins for years, and as a category it has been one that is pretty old school and pricing is kind of stoic. Well, in the last couple of months, I cannot touch any of the coins that I want at auction. Hmmm, there is not a bullion value, so I am not sure what the story is. Photography Regular readers know that I often cite photography as an undervalued antique and/or collectible. There is a lot of material out there, and pricing is really a buyer’s market since for every high end dealer there are dozens and dozens of folks who sell items in all venues for very low prices. In the last two months, I have been beaten out in both online and live auctions of numerous lots. So, my assessment is that for all the reports of the demise of the market, there may be just as many areas what are alive and strong. My suspicions as to what is driving the market includes the following: Changes in how we live. Collectors who are buying their first home are certainly driving the market on furniture at this moment.

collectors and fashionable consumers of luxury, rather than as progressive scientists. In the painting’s first iteration, for example, the laterprominent scientific instruments were entirely absent. These changes reveal the couple’s shifting public face on the brink of the French Revolution and David’s ingenuity in formulating a new kind of portrait. “The revelations about Jacques-Louis David’s painting completely transform our understanding of the centuries-old masterpiece,” said Max Hollein, Marina Kellen French Director of The Met. “More than 40 years after the work first entered the museum’s collection, it is thrilling to gain new insights into the artist’s creative process and the painting’s evolution. It is especially exciting that every step of the study, the meticulous conservation work, the cutting-edge scientific analysis, and the curatorial interpretation, all took place at The Met, a testament to the worldclass expertise housed under one roof.” The full-length double portrait of Antoine Laurent Lavoisier (1743–94) and MarieAnne Lavoisier (Marie-Anne Pierrette Paulze, 1758–1836) was purchased for The Met in 1977 by Charles and Jayne Wrightsman. Its pristine condition kept the painting out of the museum’s department of paintings conservation until March 2019, when, at the suggestion of curator emerita Katharine Baetjer, the work arrived for the removal of a degraded synthetic varnish. and macro X-ray fluorescence mapping, was employed to image and examine the painting. Among the most significant discoveries underneath the austere background were Marie-Anne Lavoisier had first been depicted wearing an enormous plumed hat decorated with ribbons and artificial flowers, a desk richly decorated in gilt bronze was beneath the red tablecloth, and, most notably, the scientific instruments that announce the couple’s place at the birth of modern chemistry were later additions that ultimately redefined the meaning of the portrait. Conservator Mahon said, “Although this painting had been studied and admired at The Met for decades, it wasn’t until it arrived in paintings conservation that anyone suspected the astonishing changes. Determining a solvent mixture that was not only safe for the painting but non-toxic for the conservator who had to remove a varnish from a painting nearly nine feet high was particularly challenging. The aesthetic improvement was well worth the effort, and it was during intimate contact with the surface that hints of the portrait’s long-held secrets began to emerge.” Research scientist Centeno commented, “It is incredibly rewarding to utilize the latest scientific advancements to see works of art in a brand-new light. The technology at the heart of this project did not exist in 1977, when the painting entered The Met collection. In fact, until recently, revealing compositions hidden below a painting’s surface with such a level of detail would have been impossible.” Associate curator Pullins added, “Today, Antoine Laurent Lavoisier is often referred to as the ‘father of modern chemistry,’ and his wife Marie-Anne Lavoisier is known as a key collaborator in his laboratory, aspects of the couple’s personality that have been well served by Jacques-Louis David’s painting. But now we see that another identity was, quite literally, concealed in the present portrait. It is an alternate lens through which to see the Lavoisiers, not for their contributions to science but as members of the wealthy tax collector class, a status that funded their research but ultimately led Lavoisier to the guillotine in 1794. Art historically, these revelations provide crucial insight into how David arrived at this milestone of European portraiture, not all at once but in the recalculation and reinvention of existing portrait types, many of which had been pioneered by women portraitists such as Adelaïde Labille-Guiard and Elisabeth Louise Vigée Le Brun in the 1780s.” Lavoisier was a prominent chemist credited with the

The Met

discovery of oxygen and the chemical composition of water through experiments in which his wife actively collaborated. However, he was also involved in studies of gunpowder, and a misunderstanding about his removal of this precious commodity from the Bastille in the summer of 1789 threw his alliances into question. This mishap and his status as a tax collector (the more prosaic means by which he funded his scientific research) led to his execution on May 8, 1794. Jacques-Louis David had planned to include his portrait of the Lavoisiers at the Salon of 1789, but the royal authorities recommended that it be withdrawn at the last minute, given the public outcry over the Bastille fiasco. It would not be exhibited publicly until 100 years later, at the Exposition Universelle of 1889. Following the analysis and restoration, the portrait was returned to The Met’s neoclassical paintings galleries where it can currently be viewed in Gallery 614. The new findings are discussed in a Perspectives article on The Met’s website, as well as detailed in peerreviewed articles published by The Burlington Magazine and Heritage Science. Credits This project was led by Silvia A. Centeno, research scientist, department of scientific research; Dorothy Mahon, conservator, department of paintings conservation; and David Pullins, associate curator, department of European paintings. Additional Met staff involved included Federico Carò, research scientist; Evan Read, associate manager of technical documentation; and Keith Christiansen, curator emeritus and former John Pope-Hennessy chairman of the department of European paintings. About The Met The Metropolitan Museum of Art was founded in 1870 by a group of American citizens, businessmen and financiers as well as leading artists and thinkers of the day, who wanted to create a museum to bring art and art education to the American people. Today, The Met displays tens of thousands of objects covering 5,000 years of art from around the world for everyone to experience and enjoy. The museum lives in two iconic sites in New York City, The Met Fifth Avenue and The Met Cloisters. Millions of people also take part in The Met experience online. Since its founding, The Met has always aspired to be more than a treasury of rare and beautiful objects. Every day, art comes alive in the museum’s galleries and through its exhibitions and events, revealing both new ideas and unexpected connections across time and across cultures.

Spider-Man’s 1962 Debut Sells For $3.6 Million

Near-Mint Copy Of Amazing Fantasy No. 15 Leaps Over Previous Record Set By Superman’s 1938 Debut To Become World’s Most Valuable Comic Book

ND

2 LIFE ANTIQUES

Page 12 from Amazing SpiderMan No. 18, featuring Spidey and Sandman. That page sold for $156,000. Also featured were more than two dozen Amazing Spider-Man books from Ditko’s private collection, offering an extraordinary chance to own books once owned by the man who made them. Heritage also offered something almost as amazing as his record-shattering comic book: some 150 pages of letters Ditko wrote to artist Russ Maheras during a written conversation that spanned nearly 45 years, from 1973 to 2017. Ditko, by then already known for better or worse as the J.D. Salinger of the comics world, wrote about everything from politics to comics and the superhero business and, of course, Spider-Man, his beloved creation. A recap of the entire sale will appear in next week’s issue. To learn more, visit www.HA.com.

Chalk Talk: Collecting Carnival Chalkware Smack Dab In The Middle: Design Trends Of The Mid-20th Century

CALENDARS

SHOW & FLEA MARKET CALENDAR

By Donald-Brian Johnson

DELAWARE

“Hey there, fella! Step right up, and take yer chance! Knock down the milk bottles, and win a kewpie for your girlie! All it takes is one thin dime!” Lines like that have been circulating around carnivals for years, and over those years, lots of fellas have been falling for it. Usually, it took plenty more than “one thin dime” to knock over those bottles, but eventually, down they went. The determined, now dime-less, player (or more likely, his “girlie”) proceeded merrily down the midway, the proud possessor of a chalkware “kewpie doll.” “Hi-yo Silver, away!” The While oversize stuffed Lone Ranger, in chalk. animals rule the fairground roost today, it wasn’t always so. During the heyday of traveling carnivals, from the Depression years of the 1930s well into the 1950s, chalkware figurines were the sought-after prizes in games of chance. Originally called “kewpie dolls,” after the Rose O’Neil impish baldheaded cherubs which populated their ranks, chalkware characters actually came in many guises. There were quaint animals, from piggy bank pigs to pipesmoking chimps, jolly clowns

Carnival-goers loved chalkware figurines because they were colorful and fun.

Object Depicts Racial Massacre In The Reconstruction Era Winterthur Museum, Garden and Library has acquired the recently discovered Liberty Monument, a unique 150-year-old stoneware masterwork that dramatically depicts a racially motivated massacre in Colfax, Louisiana, in 1873. Winterthur acquired the Liberty Monument during the Summer 2021 auction of American stoneware and redware pottery by Crocker Farm, which described it as “one of the greatest American ceramic discoveries to come to light in recent decades.” A consigner who lives near Boise, Idaho, discovered the monument. The Liberty Monument was created by Wallace and Cornwall Kirkpatrick, owners of Anna Pottery in Anna, Ill., from 1859 to 1896. The brothers were known to be socially progressive. Vocal about their views, they often commented caustically on events and politics through their work. The primary scene depicted on the Liberty Monument is the massacre of Black citizens who acted against efforts to overturn the result of the 1872 gubernatorial election in Louisiana. The commentary touches on political scandal, the struggle of Black Americans for basic human rights, the cost of the American Civil War, and other themes. The figure of Lady Liberty crowning the monument gives the work its contemporary name. “The Colfax

massacre has been largely ignored by mainstream history books,” notes Leslie Grigsby, senior curator of ceramics and glass at Winterthur. “I am proud of Alexandra Deutsch, Leslie Grigsby, and our entire curatorial team for recognizing the potential presented by the monument,” said Chris Strand, interim CEO. “By adding it to our collection, Winterthur will be able to unlock many other stories lying dormant within similar objects that we have collected over the years and give us opportunities to reach new audiences. I am happy that the board and staff have supported this acquisition.” “We are working to create a multivocal interpretation for this object by engaging with scholars, students, and others. We expect the interpretation of this complex object to evolve over time,” said Alexandra Deutsch, John L. and Marjorie P. McGraw Director of Collections. “We fully recognize the responsibility we have to depict the multilayered history this object represents.” The scholars’ responses Winterthur has received, so far, have celebrated the acquisition. “This is an important object through which we can help uncover more of the history of this understudied massacre. I grew up in Baton Rouge (just two hours from Colfax), and we did not talk

about these kinds of traumatic historical episodes. The 100th anniversary of the Tulsa Race Massacre sparked a conversation about the history of racial violence in this country. Winterthur too can contribute to these much-needed conversations,” said Dr. Jonathan Michael Square, assistant professor of Black Visual Culture at Parsons School of Design and Fellow in History of Art and Visual Culture at the Costume Institute at The Metropolitan Museum of Art. Square runs the digital humanities platform “Fashioning the Self in Slavery and Freedom.” After further research and cleaning in Winterthur’s conservation labs, the

Liberty Monument will be placed on display in Winterthur’s galleries. Winterthur, located on Route 52, six miles northwest of Wilmington, Del., and five miles south of U.S. Route 1, is closed on Mondays (except during Yuletide), Thanksgiving, and Christmas. Fine 1826 Sampler Acquired By Taber Museum Lycoming County, Pa., Needlework Is Now On Display In Williamsport An 1826 needlework sampler showing great skill in its stitching has been put on display at the Thomas T. Taber museum in Williamsport, Pa., according to the Lycoming Country Historical Society, situated on Fourth Street in a locale known as Millionaire’s Row. The historic piece was created by Jane Morison, who likely was born in 1811 and lived in the Pine Creek Townshi section of the county. Her sampler inscription reads, “Jane Morison her Sampler wrought in th/e fifteenth year of her age August 21 AD 1826 Pine Creek Township; Ly/coming County State of Pennsylvania.” (The two slants are part of the inscription). Morison’s needlework is the byproduct of an unknown

instructor who showed her not only simple cross-stitching but the sophisticated moves of Algerian eye, satin, split and Queen stitches, according to Gary Parks, museum director. “This is an exciting acquisition for the museum,” Parks said in a news release. “We have very few artifacts in the collection which relate to the pre-1850 history of the county, especially beyond Williamsport.” Parks said the museum also has a sampler from adjoining Columbia County and one from Lancaster County. A friend told him of the Morison sampler, and the museum was able to negotiate a price to obtain it, he said. At 17.6 inches long and 12 inches wide, the framed sampler shows two uppercase alphabets and one lowercase plus the numbers 1 to 9 and is

enclosed by a strawberry border. It is currently displayed in the Fine and Decorative Arts Gallery of the museum. In early America, most young women gained instructions in basic needlework to help fulfill future duties as wife, mother and housekeeper, according to the museum’s news release, which added that in 1826 there were few commodities in rural Lycoming County and that darning stitches and sewing were taught in order for a woman to clothe her family and prolong use of a textile via repair and modification. Textiles at the time often passed through the generations via wills, it was explained. “We do not have any Williamsport samplers,, and I find that puzzling,” said Parks.

“I know of several made in Muncy and Jersey Shore in the county but thus far I have not seen one made in the town of Williamsport. We would certainly like to add county samplers to our collection, as they reflect the life and times of an under-represented portion of the population (young women) within our collection,” said Parks. The museum is named in honor of local historian and philanthropist Thomas T. Taber III. He has shared his

knowledge of the region’s railroads and its once-vast lumbering industry in 13 books he has authored, including “Sunset Along Susquehanna Waters,” “Williamsport Lumber Capital,” “Sawmills Among the Derricks” and “The Williamsport and Elmira Railroad.” The museum holds and displays the large collection of the Lycoming County Historical Society, which was formed in 1907.
