Brandywine Museum Of Art To Present “The Crafted World Of Wharton Esherick”

Exciting New Exhibit Opens Oct. 13

Opening at the Brandywine Museum of Art this fall, “The Crafted World of Wharton Esherick” will explore the artistic legacy of Wharton Esherick (18871970), one of the most creative and interdisciplinary figures of 20th-century American art, craft and design. Co-organized by the Brandywine and the Wharton Esherick Museum (WEM), this major exhibition will detail the artist’s career from his early woodcut illustrations for books by the avant-garde literati to his revolutionary reimagining of furniture forms as organic sculpture. “The Crafted World” features more than 70 works by the artist and will be the first exhibition to draw exclusively from WEM’s collection of over 3,000 objects. The exhibition will bring together works from across different media mastered by the artist from painting, sculpture and printmaking to woodworking, furniture making and illustration, including many objects never before seen outside of Esherick’s home and studio.

“The Crafted World” will debut at the Brandywine and will be on view from Sunday, Oct. 13, through Jan. 19, 2025. The museum has also organized a two-venue travel tour for the exhibition that will raise the profile of this remarkable artist.

Wharton Esherick’s Flat Top Desk, 1929 and 1962, is made of walnut and padouk, 28-by-82by-36 inches; Desk Chair, 1929, is walnut, padouk, with a laced leather seat, 28-by-18-by-18 inches; and the Desk Figure is a bronze casting of a 1929 Cocobolo original, 10-by-5-by-4 inches, from the Wharton Esherick Museum Collection. Esherick is best known as the father of the Studio Furniture Movement, which saw artists bringing their unique voices to handmade, functional objects and craft traditions, often reinventing them with bold, experimental techniques and forms. He grew up in West Philadelphia and later moved to Malvern, Pa., where he built his own home and studio on the slope of Valley Forge Mountain. Now operated as WEM, this National Historic Landmark for Architecture houses the world’s largest collection of Esherick’s

artworks, spanning seven decades of artistic practice. “Esherick’s creative work was inseparable from his personal identity,” said Emily Zilber, WEM’s Director of Curatorial Affairs & Strategic Partnerships, and curator of the exhibition. “He considered his hand-crafted hillside home and studio, which he designed and built between 1926 and 1966, the best representation of his iconoclastic vision, calling it an autobiography in three dimensions.’ It is significant, then, that ‘The Crafted World’ is the largest exhibition ever organized from the

remarkable collection housed in the artist’s home and studio.”

“The Crafted World” will be presented in thematic vignettes that focus attention on recurring design explorations across Esherick’s body of creative work. Through a variety of forms, formats and media, these vignettes will invite visitors to examine the artist’s unconventional way of life and some of his key artistic interests, urban versus rural life, the movement of the body in space, the power of patterns, and the organic growth of the natural

world. Organized thematically, rather than by chronology or media, the exhibition will allow visitors to witness the evolution of Esherick’s thinking around these primary design concepts.

“This exhibition was originally conceived years ago as a small display of Esherick’s woodblock prints from WEM’s collection at the Brandywine Museum of Art, but the remarkable sweep of the artist’s crossdisciplinary creative brilliance quickly led to this more expansive examination,” said Thomas Padon, the James H. Duff Director of the Brandywine Museum of Art. “In a partnership forged over years of visits to the Wharton Esherick home and studio, conversations and deliberations, and marveling together over the artist’s work, Brandywine and our superb colleagues at WEM developed plans for this long overdue reassessment of Esherick’s contributions to American art.”

WEM’s Executive Director, Julie Siglin, added, “Esherick engaged with the world in a collaborative way; likewise, this exhibition has been a fundamentally collaborative effort from the start. WEM is thrilled to share Esherick’s legacy more broadly with the world through this exciting partnership with the Brandywine.”

Although “The Crafted World” is not a comprehensive retrospective of the artist’s career, the exhibition uses WEM’s significant collection, made up largely of the works Esherick surrounded himself with, to highlight his integrated approach to living and artmaking. “Visitors to ‘The Crafted World’ will be introduced to the artist’s singular voice, creativity and skill in a way that recontextualizes the objects with innovative thematic approaches to his work,” said Amanda Burdan, Senior Curator at the Brandywine,

the Philippine-American War but also its significant influence on the global relationship between the United States and the Philippines up to the present day.”

Since the early 2000s, ISM and FECGP have formally been community partners, with the VFW Pvt. Tomas Claudio Post 1063 having held the first

Philippine flag-raising ceremony aboard Olympia in 1975. Through these annual celebrations and a desire to illuminate the Filipino perspective, the dialogue about the conflict and changing views within the Filipino community about the two countries’ historical relationship has continued between

“Burning Aguinaldo’s Palace” by F. Tennyson Neely (18631941) is from “A Wonderful Reproduction of Living Scenes in Natural Color Photos of America’s New Possessions” (Chicago, 1899) and is a photolithograph on paper, from the Cruiser Olympia Association Collection, depicting the desperate character of the insurgents in this wanton destruction of Malolos church. It was fired by them as they fled before the Americans entered the town. It was done partly in revenge against the religious orders. Continued

“Insurgent Army Surrenders” by J. D. Givens (1863-1939) is from scenes taken in the Philippines, China, Japan, and on the Pacific (ca. 1901) and is a photolithograph on paper, from the Cruiser Olympia Association Collection showing the insurgent Army surrendering to Gen. Frederick D. Grant in Philippine Islands.

Located in the senior officers’ quarters through Dec. 31, 2025, visitors will learn about the war itself as well as the symbols that arose through the complicated relationship between the United States, the Philippines and the Filipino people. To ensure the most accurate depiction of the war and its outcomes, ISM is partnering on the exhibit with the Filipino Executive Council of Greater Philadelphia Inc. (FECGP) to include a Filipino perspective.

“We are very excited to be partnering with the Filipino community in the Greater Philadelphia region to bring this exhibition to life. The Olympia is the largest artifact in our collection and so it is fitting that it houses this exhibition that tells the story of the events that occurred after the Battle of Manila Bay in 1898,” says Peter S. Seibert, Independence Seaport Museum’s president and CEO.

Told in four sections, the exhibit will first place in context the shifting of power between Spain, the Philippines and the United States of America in the outcome of the Spanish-American War as well as introduce visitors to the islands of the Philippines and key figures of the time. The second section will highlight the fleeting semblance of freedom for the Philippines only to have it taken away, the United States’ refusal to recognize the First Philippine Republic and the 1899 Battle of Manila, which was the first and largest battle in the war. Section three will delve deeper into the war itself and the advantages each side had within it as well as look at the United States’ and the Philippines’ positions as well as how they viewed the war and commemorate it to this day. The last section will examine the lasting effects of the conflict, subsequent imperialism and the continued relationship between the countries.

Collector Anecdotes And Antics

A Speculative Craze That Spawned Another Speculative Craze!

Let’s hop in my DeLorean time machine and head back to the 1980s. Don’t worry, I won’t leave you behind, but you may want to stay. The 1980s are often considered to be the decade of greed and excess. Looking back, there were many speculative crazes and pop culture

9 TH ANNUAL BERKS COUNTY I.A.C.A.N.E.

phenomena that came out of this self-proclaimed decade of decadence. From Nintendo to The Masters of the Universe, from Madonna to Prince, the 1980s had something to offer everyone, and its influence still lives on 40-plus years later. There is, however, one pop culture phenomenon that set the early 1980s on fire and spanned a unique collectible trading card series that still lives on to this very day.

In any other time period, pudgy mass-produced dolls would probably crash and burn in the toy aisle and end up in the clearance aisle. But this was the 1980s, and both consumerism and Wall Street (good 1980s movie by the way) greed were running rampant. Coleco was an American company founded in 1932 as the Connecticut Leather Company. The company eventually expanded into plastics and started making toys and games. By 1982, Coleco secured the rights to produce Cabbage Patch Kids, not realizing the true gold mine they stumbled upon. Cabbage Patch Kids were thought by toy industry insiders at the time to be too quirky and unrealistic to appeal to mass audiences. As such, while Coleco believed in the product, the company started out only producing a modest amount of the dolls, not expecting massive demand would ensue.

Due to a clever marketing campaign emphasizing the idea that Cabbage Patch Kids were not purchased but instead adopted, children clamored for

the deformed dolls. By the 1983 holiday shopping season, it was clear that Coleco was in over their head. The company could not produce enough of the dolls to satisfy consumer demand. There are videos on the internet that show riots breaking out at toy stores across the country with people paying tidy premiums to secure one of the dolls on the secondary market. Cabbage Patch Kids were one of the very first speculative toy crazes of this time period.

Incidentally, this article is not about Cabbage Patch Kids, because by 1986 the craze would fizzle. This article is instead about a pop culture phenomenon giving birth to the rise of another pop culture phenomenon. Since the Cabbage Patch Kids craze lasted from roughly 1983 to 1986, other companies sought to cash in and even p arody the craze. The Topps Company was a trading card manufacturer who had a hit with Wacky Packages trading cards, which first premiered in 1967. Wacky Packages trading cards featured hilarious parodies of consumer products. Cartoonist and Topps Company consultant Art Spiegelman, who created Wacky Packages and is credited with their success, came up with a new idea: a product line of peel and stick trading cards that parodied the Cabbage Patch Kid toy line.

The result was a humorous and sometimes grotesque line of trading cards that featured a cast of characters that looked eerily similar to Cabbage Patch Kids with names like “Adam Bomb” and “Dead Ted,” who each faced some kind of unique death or comical deformity playing on the design of the original Cabbage Patch Kids dolls. The series was an instant success upon being released in 1985, and Garbage Pail Kids were soon banned from most schools. Besides being a distraction to learning, school officials also thought the designs of some of the cards were too

inappropriate and grotesque for a school environment.

I fondly remember completing a full first series set of the cards that I unfortunately did not hold onto. Fifteen series of cards were produced over the few short years the craze lasted, and by 1988 it was already dying out. This was due in part to a horrible live-action movie that premiered in 1987 and is still to this day considered one of the worst movies ever made based on a licensed property (word to the wise: don’t watch it).

Over the years, Topps released various other trading card sets and products devoted to the Garbage Pail Kids line. Still, most of these products do not compare to the original series, and the very first series of cards is considered to be one of the most collectible. A lot of collectors have chosen to have their cards third-party graded, and top tier third-party grading companies like PSA have

started to grade and encapsulate Garbage Pail Kids. Many people who fondly remember the Garbage Pail Kids craze are surprised to learn that some of the early cards, especially if graded by a company like PSA in 10 (gem mint) condition, can sell for thousands of dollars to the right buyer. This is par for the course as ‘80s pop culture is currently selling for all-time highs. That said, should you discover a collection of these cards in your former childhood bedroom or basement, just know that most opened loose cards will not grade in the coveted 9-10 grade condition required to command a premium on the secondary market.

The secondary collector’s market for Garbage Pail Kids is stable at present time but limited in scope due to the amount of collectors willing to pay a premium for these kinds of items. To use this comparison as an example, the market for vintage Star Wars toys and collectibles is much larger than that for vintage Garbage Pail Kids cards.

That said, Garbage Pail Kids do have organic collectability as anyone buying these items were not hoarding them back when they first premiered. Just know that a lot of cards were produced and the early original series are generally considered to be most collectible with few exceptions. There are some excellent collecting guides and pricing info readily available online, but be sure to check actual sold prices of the cards before attempting to value an item you have or one you are considering buying.

I have always been fascinated by how one pop culture phenomenon can spawn another and looking back at the collectability of both original Coleco Cabbage Patch Kids dolls and Garbage Pail Kids, Garbage Pail Kids, with a few exceptions, can be much more valuable than most vintage Cabbage Patch Kids! Topps still releases anniversary collectible sets of Garbage Pail Kids, and even Cabbage Patch Kids are still sold today thanks to an updated licensing agreement with Wicked Cool

Toys since Coleco went bankrupt back in 1988.

The 1980s were an incredible time to be alive. For anyone reading this who was not lucky enough to remember the 1980s, you just had to be there to

understand it. For everyone else, we have mementos like Garbage Pail Kids that remind us of our youth and what a crazy time it was! Now where did I park the DeLorean?
