Elverson Antique Show And Sale Moves To A New Date 99th Semiannual Show Scheduled For Oct. 27 And 28 FRIDAY OCTOBER 12, 2018 • VOL. 49, NO. 41

The Peter Chillingworth Auction Slated For Oct. 18, 19, And 20 Unreserved On-Site Sale To Be Held By Amelia Jeffers And Frio, Stack And Associates

Auctioneer Amelia Jeffers will be conducting the on-site absolute auction for longtime Americana dealer and close friend Peter Chillingworth on Oct. 18, 19, and 20. After 57 years in the antiques business, Peter Chillingworth and his wife, Kathryn (Cappy), are ready for a change that includes selling the contents of Peter Chillingworth Antiques and their private collection at an unreserved auction on-site at their farm in Scenery Hill, Pa. The two-day sale will take place Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, Oct. 18, 19, and 20. Close friend Amelia Jeffers of Columbus, Ohio, formerly of Garth’s Auctioneers and Appraisers, will be handling the 1,300-plus lot auction. “It is such an honor to be approached by Peter and Cappy to conduct this auction,” said Jeffers. “The Chillingworths are longtime friends, and I can’t imagine many more exciting reasons to jump onboard an auction than this. As everyone in the business knows, Peter has wonderful things, is an icon in the Americana world as both a dealer and successful show manager. That he is offering a serious and extensive collection on-site and absolute just translates into a fantastic opportunity to engage.”

A two-day on-site auction on behalf of Peter and his wife, Kathryn (Cappy), Chillingworth will be conducted on Oct. 18, 19, and 20 in Scenery Hill, Pa.

The Elverson Antique Show and Sale has changed its date to the last weekend in October. The quality semiannual show will be held at the Twin Valley High School, located at 4897 Twin Valley Road, Elverson, Pa., on Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 27 and 28. Hours will be from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday. Admission is $7, or $6 with an ad or show card. The change in date was made to avoid conflicts with other shows that were being held in mid-November, forcing showgoers and exhibiting dealers to choose which shows to attend. The change has resulted in attracting several new dealers to

“I had a great interest in antiques from a young age thanks to my mother. I started out portering for her in my teens when she managed a much-loved antique show held for years at the Episcopalian Church in Indiana, Pa.,” explained Chillingworth. “When I got out of school, and in an effort to seek approval from my future father-in-law, I took a job at JC Penney in management. I lasted about 18 months before I decided I did not want to retire as a JC Penney associate. So with my wife’s permission, and because she had steady income as a school teacher, I left Penney’s and opened an antique shop in March of 1961.” Though Peter The Chillingworths’ personal collection from their 1859 house C h i l l i n g w o r t h located adjacent to their shop will be sold and includes a fine Antiques has never assemblage of Western Pennsylvania art and antiques. The From the Farmhouse Show, now in its eighth year will take place in Elkton, Md., on Saturday, Oct 20, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. This country and primitive show was started by Cecilia Taylor when she saw the need for more country shows in her area. Taylor holds the show every spring and fall indoors at the Edward Walls Building on the Fair Hill/Cecil County Fairgrounds. The dealer list includes people from all over, including, Vermont, Wisconsin, and Virginia, just to name a few. Taylor also started the Leesport, Pa., show last December, held at the farmer’s market grounds, and plans to make it an annual event. Since starting the Elkton, Md., show, the promoter has also started a show in Canastota, N.Y., and Harrisonburg Va. These are all considered country shows. The Elkton (From the Farmhouse) show is a crowd favorite with lots of

Customers and dealers have stated each show has been getting better and better with fresh picked material offered in well-presented displays. The show has made progress since its humble beginnings eight years ago. It is full to capacity with 36 dealers. The fairgrounds are located at 4640 Telegraph Road in Elkton, Md. handmade marbles from the last few centuries are still selling at auction, and some for record sums. However, the vast majority of both handmade marbles and even vintage machine made marbles from manufacturers like Akro Agate and Christensen Agate are not enjoying recordbreaking sales. Younger collectors in this category are more interested in contemporary art marbles like the incredible planet-like marbles created by contemporary glass artist Josh Simpson. Very few younger collectors are clamoring for vintage and antique marbles. The demand is just not there, and honestly, how many millennials know how to play a game of marbles anyway? Vintage Toy Tains This entry should surprise no one. Show of hands for how many readers still bring out a yearly electric train set at Christmastime? Now, how many of that same group recently gifted an electric train to a loved one? Lego holds the lead on this one, as Lego makes a unique line of electric trains that continue to sell year after year. It seems few younger collectors are getting into vintage Lionel train sets and related collectibles. Prices on the common and some uncommon stuff fully support this trend. Sellers are treated to lessthan-stellar results at auction,

and few active buyers are clamoring for their good stuff. If the trend is your friend, then this one left the station long ago. Depression-Era Glass/Fiestaware Some will scoff at me for placing these two categories together, but they fit. To younger collectors there is nothing exciting about massproduced glass and dinnerware, regardless of the era it was produced. Both Depression-era glass and Fiestaware have had their proverbial time in the sun. It should be noted that I do still see a very bright future for high-quality vintage glass and ceramics. For instance, I have argued against naysayers that I feel quality Tiffany glass is currently undervalued. That said, I easily could be wrong, so I would caution anyone from putting large amounts of money into it as a result, but trust me, virtually no one under the age of 40 is buying Depression-era glass and Fiestaware out of nostalgia or for investment. Vintage Pre-Nintendo Video Games and Computers Regular readers will note my dreary outlook for preNintendo video games and computers, but again, the trend is your friend. There is absolutely nothing driving nostalgia or demand for preNintendo games and consoles. Atari collecting is dead

It has been said that the antiques and collectibles trade runs in cycles. This is often summed up in phrases such as “what is old is new again.” And for some lucky collecting categories, this holds true. For instance, vintage photography is back en vogue and has been for some time, but that wasn’t always the case. The same can be said of vintage advertising and soda pop collectibles, which experienced a massive revival thanks in part to the success of the television show “American Pickers.” Unfortunately, there are also some collecting categories that simply go almost extinct. Is anyone collecting Westernthemed collectibles anymore? “Gunsmoke,” “Bonanza,” and “The Lone Ranger” enjoyed their time in the spotlight not long ago. Whether simply due to a lack of interest, changing demographics, or other circumstances, certain markets can fade and not regain their footing. Like it or not, there is only one constant in the antiques and collectibles trade, and that, of course, is change. Listed below are six collecting categories that are, in my opinion, on the verge of imminent extinction. I understand that this list may be seen as controversial to some, yet surprising to others, but it is based on many years of observations and experience within the trade. PEZ Dispensers PEZ became a collecting sensation in the 1980s and 1990s, and a full-blown speculator market blossomed. In 1993, Christie’s featured a dedicated PEZ auction, which caused prices on even common dispensers to skyrocket in value. Even into the new millennium, PEZ collecting was considered en vogue, but by 2006, the collecting public started to sour on everyone’s favorite colorful candy dispensers. With younger collectors no longer interested, dispensers that were once selling for close to $200 each were spiraling below the $100 mark, and today a lot of dispensers that once would have sold for several hundred dollars can be had for $75 or less. Worse yet, most vintage dispensers

from the 1950s and 1960s are quite common and readily available today. Prominent auction houses like Hake’s or Morphy’s won’t even take PEZ dispensers unless they meet a certain dollar threshold and have some level of rarity. This market shows no signs of turning around, and further declines should be expected. Mechanical Banks (and other diecast collectibles) Considered a mainstay in the antique marketplace for some time, cast-iron collectibles and mechanical banks skyrocketed in value in the 1980s and 1990s, with record-breaking results. Sadly, very few millennials and younger collectors are longing for mechanical banks. Instead, sellers of common and uncommon banks are being treated to lukewarm prices and fewer active buyers. That said, if you are one of the lucky collectors who has a very rare and desirable mechanical bank, it will most likely find a buyer, but you may not be too happy with the price you receive compared to the prices being paid in the 1990s and early millennium. This category shows little sign of turning around and could be regulated to a curiosity in the coming years. Marbles (handmade and vintage machine made) This one pains me the most as I am a hardcore collector of marbles. Yes, antique

and shows no signs of growth. You can get most of the rarest Atari 2600 games for a fraction of their cost compared to their year 2005 market highs. And almost no one is starting to collect Colecovision, Intellivision, and Odyssey video games in 2018. This is an era that very few hardcore video game collectors care about any more. Nintendo and related curiosities from a post-Nintendo world are all the rage right now, and even that will eventually die a prolonged death thanks to

There will be complimentary snacks such as Danishes, cookies, soft pretzels, brownies, and more, made by a number of talented Emporium dealer bakers. Also, the Emporium courtyard will be filled with garden items and mums for autumn doorway or garden decorations. As with past shows, auctioneers Christopher and Elaine Doerner will offer

evaluations of antiques for a $5 donation, which will go to a yet-to-be-determined charity. The evaluations are limited to three items and will take place from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. The greeter at the front door of the Emporium will assign times. Happy antiquing!

49th Annual Thanksgiving Weekend

e

R004509

Leaves are starting to fall, and there is a chill in the air. Soon there will be the smell the campfires and sound of canons from the upcoming 49th annual Civil War Living History Weekend and Fall Open House in Mullica Hill, N.J. The weekend event will take place Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 13 and 14, from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. or later on the first day and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on day two. Camp life, skirmishes, living history, and family-friendly fun are trademarks of the special event. Reenactors take on the role of an ancestor who fought in the war to preserve not only family history but to serve as a reminder of one of our nation’s darkest times. “We must remember the mistakes of the past, as to not repeat them again. It is important we teach future generations what not to do,” according to Gen. John Houke. Two camps will be open with medical and weapons displays. Skirmishes are planned throughout the weekend. Live music, food, and many open house special sales will be going on along Main Street. Many shops will offer 10 to 50 percent off instore specials. The Parsongae, the newest large antique coop, will hold a fall sale including sweets and treats and feature live music. Across the street at Flossy’s Boutique and Flossy’s Kids, there will be activities with Mona, such as sand art and face painting, and the General Store will have snacks and drinks.

The Historic Burlington Antiques and Art Emporium will host its ninth biannual Antiques Show and Customer Appreciation Day on Sunday, Oct. 14, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Located at 424 High St. in Burlington, N.J., the

“It’s Alive! Frankenstein At 200” The Morgan Celebrates 200th Anniversary of Mary Shelley’s “Frankenstein” In Major New Exhibition

the Morgan and the New York Public Library, has only grown since then. We are very pleased to collaborate with the NYPL in presenting the full version of this extraordinary tale and how it lives on in the most resilient and timely of ways.” A copiously illustrated companion volume, “It’s Alive! A Visual History of Frankenstein,” provides a vivid account of the artistic and literary legacy of the novel along with detailed descriptions of the highlights in the exhibition, while a new online curriculum offers high school teachers resources for the classroom. The Exhibition The exhibition occupies two galleries: one documenting the life of Mary Shelley and the composition of her book, the other showing how the story evolved in the theater, cinema, and popular culture. The Influence of the Gothic Style and Enlightenment Science Mary Shelley’s “Frankenstein; or, the Modern Prometheus” sprang from both a passion for Gothic style that pervaded British culture long before the author’s birth in 1797 and the influence of the discoveries of European Enlightenment science. Audiences loved the supernatural in all its formulations ghosts, graveyards, mysterious strangers, secret warnings, lost wills, hidden pictures, and more. While novels were the primary vehicle for the Gothic, it was also popular with artists of paintings and prints, which were sometimes satirical - the Gothic was parodied as soon as it was taken seriously. The exhibition opens with the greatest horror painting of the 18th century, “The Nightmare,” painted in 1781 by the Swiss immigrant artist Henry Fuseli. Mary Shelley knew about this iconic image and may have used it in writing the climactic scene in “Frankenstein.” Shelley was also influenced by the scientific endeavors of the time. She had been born into an age of scientific and technological discovery in Britain, when institutions like the Royal Society began fostering exploration and experimentation. Across Britain spread a thriving circuit of lectures and science demonstrations for the public. A few of these experiments have become part of the Frankenstein legend. While writing the novel, Shelley had been reading Humphry Davy’s “Elements of Chemical Philosophy,” and she knew about anatomical dissections, contemporary debates about the origins of life, and electrical experiments on corpses. She lends this fascination to Victor Frankenstein, who makes a monster from corpses in his “workshop of filthy creation.” Mary Shelley’s Life and Conception of Frankenstein Mary Shelley grew up in a radical and intellectual milieu, the daughter of writers famous in their own time, the feminist theorist Mary Wollstonecraft and the novelist and philosopher William Godwin. After her mother died in childbirth, her father married Mary Jane Clairmont, who had children of her own, and the teenaged

Fleischman, Bridgeman Images. Mary Godwin escaped a tense family atmosphere by making a long visit to friends in Scotland. When she returned in 1814, she met the poet Percy Bysshe Shelley, already married and a father. They soon fell in love and eloped to Europe, the most decisive act of all their lives. It was on a trip to Lake Geneva in 1816 accompanied by P.B. Shelley, Lord Byron, and her stepsister Claire Clairmont that Mary Godwin found the inspiration to write “Frankenstein.” During their stay, the party entertained themselves by reading aloud from a volume of Gothic tales. Byron suggested a contest to write ghost stories, and Shelley joined in energetically, looking for something “to curdle the blood, and quicken the beatings of the heart.” After days of frustrated effort, the idea came to her one night after hearing P.B. Shelley and Lord Byron discuss the origins of life and the possibility of animating a corpse by galvanic action. “I saw - with shut eyes, but acute mental vision - I saw the pale student of unhallowed arts kneeling beside the thing he had put together.” She returned to England with the beginnings of a novel. By 1817, she had finished a draft titled “Frankenstein; or, the Modern Prometheus.” The book appeared in three volumes on Jan. 1, 1818, after P. B. Shelley offered revisions and

found a publisher. Luckily for posterity, most of the “Frankenstein” manuscript has survived, making it possible to see the author’s original ideas, her second thoughts, and her husband’s suggestions. Portions of the manuscript containing key passages in the novel will be on display at the Morgan. Mary Shelley’s personal life was punctuated by tragedy in ways strangely similar to incidents in the novel. After settling in Italy in the spring of 1818 with

her husband, children William and Clara, and stepsister Claire and her daughter, Allegra, the family experienced constant sorrow, as first William and Clara and then Allegra died. Their grief was only partly assuaged by the birth of another child, Percy Florence. Through their mourning and marital difficulties, Mary Shelley and her husband maintained a strenuous routine of writing and study and friendships in the English and Italian communities. In July 1822, Shelley suffered a final devastating loss: P. B. Shelley sailed with his friend, Edward Williams, and their cabin boy to meet their friend Leigh Hunt’s family in Leghorn; on their return their boat met a sudden squall, and they drowned. Frankenstein on Stage and on Screen When Mary Shelley returned to England in August 1823, one of the few bright spots was Richard Brinsley Peake’s melodrama “Presumption! or, the Fate of Frankenstein,” a theatrical hit, had made her famous. The actor Thomas Potter Cooke’s performance was the key factor: over six feet tall, clad in a gray-blue leotard, his exposed skin painted the same color, with a toga on top, he moved with lyrical athleticism and made the creature both frightening and pathetic. Mary Shelley saw one of Cooke’s performances and enjoyed it greatly. Other adaptations followed: at least 15 dramas based on the novel were produced between 1823 and 1826. A large portion of the exhibition is dedicated to the movies, which have played an essential role in popularizing the story and shaping our pop culture image of the monster. The earliest film of “Frankenstein” was made by the Edison Studios in 1910, but it is James Whale’s 1931 version that has taken such a prominent place in the popular psyche that it is now better known than the novel. The 1931 “Frankenstein” and 1935 “Bride of Frankenstein” gave us a radically reimagined version of the narrative, particularly the creation scene and Boris Karloff’s performance as the

monster. James Whale and his special effects technicians introduced the high-voltage lab equipment and set the scene amidst the thunder and lightning now obligatory in horror movies. The creature’s violence was induced by his being tortured with fire. Karloff later said, “Over the years thousands of children wrote, expressing compassion for the great, weird creature who was so abused by its sadistic keeper that it could only respond to violence with violence. Those children saw beyond the make-up and really understood.” The 1935 sequel, with Elsa Lanchester playing both Mary Shelley and the creature’s bride, has also aged well. Both films create sympathy for the creature through his encounters with stupid and sadistic people, and both Karloff and Elsa Lanchester portray their characters with dignity and depth of emotion. From the creation of the monster, to the creature’s killing of a small child, to violence committed against women, adaptations of “Frankenstein” again and again have returned to some of the most disturbing but recurring scenes of human experience. Mary Shelley’s unique contribution to culture is the creation of the monster. Her genius was to imagine a way to make life out of death; James Whale’s genius was to imagine a way to depict it in moving images and sound. Whale’s “Frankenstein” films sparked a mass of cinematic energy. Other directors drew from it for years after with imitations and derivative films, a few just as frightening, some quite funny, none as haunting. The Morgan has borrowed a series of B-movie posters from a private collector and the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences to show some of the more faithful, comic, lurid, and execrable treatments of this theme. Makeup artists, perhaps, have come closer than anyone to bringing Victor Frankenstein’s story to life. Jack Pierce’s makeup gave the creature a new face in the 1931 film. A classic of world literature, a masterpiece of horror, and a forerunner of science fiction, “Frankenstein” by Mary Shelley is the subject of a new exhibition at the Morgan. Organized in collaboration with the New York Public Library, “It’s Alive! Frankenstein at 200” traces the origins and impact of the novel whose monster has become both a meme and a metaphor for forbidden science, unintended consequences, and ghastly combinations of the human and the inhuman. Portions of the original manuscript will be on display along with historic scientific instruments and iconic artwork such as Henry Fuseli’s “Nightmare” and the definitive portrait of Mary Shelley. The story’s astonishingly versatile role in art and culture over the course of 200 years helps explain why the monster permeates the popular imagination to this day. This major exhibit will open Friday, Oct. 12, and run until Jan. 27, 2019. Co-curated by John Bidwell, the Astor curator and department head of the Morgan’s printed books and bindings department, and Elizabeth Denlinger, curator of the Carl H. Pforzheimer collection of Shelley and His Circle at the New York Public Library, this exhibition presents a diverse array of books, manuscripts, posters, prints, and paintings illustrating the long cultural tradition that shaped and was shaped by Mary Shelley’s myth. A large number of these works come from both the Morgan and the New York Public Library’s collections. Only 18 years old when she embarked on the novel, Shelley invented the archetype of the mad scientist who dares to flout the laws of nature. She created an iconic monster who spoke out against injustice and begged for sympathy while performing acts of shocking violence. The monster’s fame can be attributed to the novel’s theatrical and film adaptations. Comic books, film posters, publicity stills, and movie memorabilia reveal a different side to the story of “Frankenstein,” as reinterpreted in spinoffs, sequels, mashups, and parodies. “The Morgan is in an excellent position to tell the rich story of Mary Shelley’s life and of Frankenstein’s evolution in popular culture,” said director of the museum, Colin B. Bailey. “Pierpont Morgan was fascinated by the creative process, and one of the artifacts he acquired was a first-edition “Frankenstein” annotated by the author. Frick To Receive Important Private Collection Of French Faience Promised Gift Featured In Exhibition “Masterpieces Of French Faience: Selections From The Sidney R. Knafel Collection” marvelous representation of the great variety and creativity of French faience,” stated director Ian Wardropper. “Faience was largely commissioned by a local regional aristocracy, and the result is another wonderful chapter in the history of ceramics that developed quite apart from the centers of political power and artistic innovation in Versailles and Paris. While our holdings in ceramics trace their origins to Henry Clay Frick’s interest over 100 years ago in Chinese and Sèvres porcelain, the institution has never before exhibited such a large and impressive body of faience. We are delighted to illuminate

Upon firing, the oxides are absorbed by and permanently fused into the tin-glazed layer. With the vogue for porcelain at its height during the mid-18th century, the desire to expand faience’s limited range of colors led French potters to develop the This plate, Rouen, ca. 1725, Faience (tin-glazed earthenware), is 9 5/6 inches in diameter and is a promised gift of Sidney R. Because the clay used was porous, it was covered with a vitreous glaze made of silica (sand) to make the vessels impermeable. With the addition of tin oxide, the transparent glaze became white and opaque, thus masking the clay’s natural red or gray color and providing a uniformly white ground to which painted decoration composed of metallic oxides could be applied. Faience is categorized according to whether it is decorated using the grand feu (high fired) or petit feu (low fired) technique. In grand feu, metallic oxides are mixed with water and applied to the tin-glazed surface before being fired at a temperature of about 1650 degrees fahrenheit. The palette is consequently limited to those oxides that can withstand such high heat: cobalt (blue),

The Knafel collection comprises pieces made exclusively with the grand feu technique. Before its production in France, tin-glazed earthenware had been made for centuries. The technique was

developed in the Middle East before the 9th century and spread as a result of Arab conquests and commercial exchanges in the Mediterranean, arriving in Italy in the 13th century. Known as maiolica in Italy, tin-glazed earthenware experienced a Golden Age during the 15th and 16th centuries, and manufactories flourished in Urbino, Casteldurante, Pesaro, Faenza, Deruta, and Gubbio. Italian Renaissance maiolica elevated tin-glazed earthenware from a sophisticated type of pottery to an ambitious art form rivaling contemporary silver and also strongly influencing the production of tin-glazed earthenware in France. This influence is reflected in the French word faience, which derives from Faenza, the city in northern Italy that was an important center of maiolica production during the Renaissance. Influence of Italian Ceramics The production of tinglazed earthenware in France is directly related to the arrival in Lyon, during the second half of the 16th century, of several Italian maiolica potters and painters who were seeking opportunities outside Italy. Lyon was a culturally rich city at the crossroads of Italy, France, and the Holy Roman Empire, with a large Italian community, documented as early as 1512. Many Italian ceramists are known to have established themselves in Lyon, although

The only recorded objects with signatures are those painted by Gironimo Tomasi, who worked in Urbino and Albissola before immigrating to Lyon. Stylistic comparison suggests that three (possibly four) pieces in the Knafel collection were possibly made by Tomasi in Lyon, sometime between his arrival in the city in 1581 and his death in 1602. These rare objects, among them the plate, are painted in the tradition of those produced a generation earlier by the Fontana workshop in Urbino, where Tomasi received his early training. This fall, an exhibition at The Frick Collection will debut an important promised gift of French faience from the holdings of Sidney R. Knafel, who, over a 50-year period, developed one of the world’s finest and most comprehensive such private collections in the world. The 75 objects included in the gift will be shown in the Frick’s daylit Portico Gallery. Together, they will tell the fascinating and complex history of an aspect of European decorative arts that warrants greater attention. The exhibition, which is organized by decorative arts curator Charlotte Vignon, will be accompanied by a catalogue published in hard and softcover editions by the Frick, in association with D Giles Ltd. “We are immensely grateful to Sid and his wife, Londa, for being such generous friends and benefactors of the Frick and especially to Sid for allowing us to present so many

In 1829, Henry Burkett commissioned a survey of his land an platted what was to become the town that bears his name today. From then until the Civil War, the village flourished, with many of the trades of the times being housed in the structures that were built. On Sept. 13 & 14, 1862, Burkittsville became closely involved with the Civil War, where both Union and Confederate Army’s engaged in the Battle of Crampton’s Gap, a bloody prelude to the Battle of Antietam. The Burkett House at 103 East Main Street was built in 1807. It is a rectangular 2½ story, 6 bay federal style structure made of brick covered with painted stucco and a gable metal roof. A spectacular walnut corner cupboard (which is in the Oct. 20th auction) was built and signed by Henry Burkett and placed in the living quarters of the house, where he also resided.

Production in Nevers and Rouen In the early 1590s, Lyon lost its political and economic independence, which adversely affected the growth of the city’s manufactories and workshops, including those making faience. Famine and fear of plague further prompted the city’s Italian potters to move to Nevers, in central France, which had been ruled by an Italian prince, Luigi Gonzaga of Mantua, since his marriage in 1565 to Henriette of Cleves. Among the numerous Italian artists and craftsmen Gonzaga attracted to Nevers was Augustin Conrade (also known as Agostino di Domenico Conrado), whose family went on to dominate the production of faience in Nevers until the mid-17th century, at a time when Nevers was the only A painting attributed to Gironimo Tomasi Dish, Lyon, ca. 1582-1600, Faience (tin-glazed earthenware), is 18 7/8 inches and is a promised gift of Sidney R. Originally from Albissola in Liguria, Conrade spent a few years in Lyon prior to establishing a workshop in Nevers, in 1584, where he was soon joined by his nephews, Dominique, Baptiste, and Bernardin. In 1608, Dominique founded the faience manufactory called Les Trois Rois (The Three Kings), and, in 1610, Baptiste opened La Croix d’Or (The Golden Cross). Antoine Conrade, great nephew of Augustin, was the head of Les Trois Mores (The Three Moors), the largest workshop in Nevers from 1626 until his death in 1647. This workshop is likely to have produced the spectacular plate previously referenced, whose complex shape and decoration combining sphinxlike creatures, winged figures, and fantastic

As described about 1715 by the celebrated French memoirist Saint-Simon, this resulted in a sudden craze among French aristocrats for domestic faience: “In eight days, all who were of grand or considerable standing used only faience

been established in France for several generations, and some native French potters had no Italian roots at all, thus the Italian influence had become weaker. In Nevers, potters and painters began to explore new types of decoration, forging an artistic identity distinct from their Italian predecessors. At the forefront of this effort was the introduction of a dark blue background, often referred to as “Nevers blue,” represented in the Knafel collection by a very large ewer that is one of the most ambitious examples of French faience, along with a recently discovered basin. Their shapes recall silver pieces used at the court of Louis XIV, while their painted decoration, with figures wearing turbans, a shepardess, and peddlers, is inspired by early 17th-century French

Theriault’s Marquis Doll Auction Achieves Records cloth Moravian dolls known as “Maggie-Bessie” in homage to the Pfohl sisters of the Moravian community of Salem, N.C., who created these dolls. The family collection was presented as one lot and included a classic example of the beloved doll along with trunk and large collection of costumes hand-sewn by the “aunties,” as they were known in the family. Also included were handmade costumed paper dolls made by Maggie and Bessie, three cloth dolls in various stages of completion, and a collection of eight miniature dolls made in the sister Moravian community of Bethlehem, Pa. Against an estimate of $8,000-$11,000, the lot soared to $35,650. The entire audience cheered the wining bidder, seated in the audience, who announced that she will be lending the collection to the UFDC Museum of Dolls for an upcoming exhibition. Theriault’s summer auction contained many dolls from the well-known and respected German doll author, Lydia Richter. Examples included several bisque lady dolls with sculpted hair and jewelry, one reaching $8,625, six times its pre-sale estimate, and a collection of rare cloth dolls by Kathe Kruse. Collector enthusiasm for the finest of antique dolls reached new heights across all genres at Theriault’s Marquis Auction held in Scottsdale, Ariz., on July 16. Titled “Provenance,” the auction featured dolls from estate collections, many with fascinating personal history. There was the beloved French musical automaton, “Pierrot Serenading the Crescent Moon” by Lambert, which had remained in the Rollins family of New York and Connecticut since its gifting to Daniel Rollins in 1890 during his coffee-venture business trip to Brazil. “Although we don’t know the complete circumstances of the trip, a letter written by his author wife, Alice Wellington Rollins, detailing their voyage contained the wide, yet mysterious, phrase, ‘I have no idle hours to spend in hunting up the bitter foe who simply ought to be my friend,’” noted cataloger Florence Theriault. The automaton strummed its way to $34,500. And there were the familyheld dolls and ephemera relating to the early American

this gazebo from the Latimeria estate in Wilmington. It was installed in the Winterthur Garden according to his instructions in 1929. Umbrella Seat and Pagoda Gate – The Umbrella Seat and Pagoda Gate, also from the Latimeria estate in Wilmington, were installed by Henry Francis du Pont in the 1920s. 1750 House – Henry Francis du Pont relocated the façade of this New Castle house to Winterthur in the 1960s. He used it to camouflage the chiller tower. Brick Lookout – The Brick Lookout is a structure that was repurposed by Henry Francis du Pont in 1957 when it was moved to Sycamore Hill. Bristol Summerhouse – Henry Francis du Pont created the Bristol Summerhouse in the 1960s based on a structure he had seen at The

Lindens in Bristol, R.I. Faerie Cottage – Enchanted Woods is filled with repurposed items from the Winterthur estate, including iron and stone elements from earlier gardens and house facades that were remodeled and replaced as the household evolved. “Follies: Architectural Whimsy in the Winterthur Garden” is open dawn to dusk and is included in admission and is free of charge to members. All “follies” are accessible by foot or tram on a one-mile loop that takes visitors through the core of the historic Winterthur Garden. There is no better time than autumn to stroll the Winterthur grounds, as the colors of the season create a striking backdrop to the whimsical and classic garden structures, or “follies,” featured in Winterthur’s first outdoor exhibition, “Follies: Architectural Whimsy in the Garden.” Whether viewing “Follies” for the first time or experiencing it anew, visitors will enjoy seeing the “follies” combine with colorful fall trees and flowers to create a landscape like none they’ve seen before. “This is a great place to experience fall color in Delaware,” said Chris Strand, Winterthur’s Brown Harrington director of Garden and Estate. “It is also a wonderful time of year to explore Henry Francis du Pont’s garden and take in the historic views and vistas of this iconic Brandywine landscape.” The “Follies” exhibition features 13 whimsical and classic garden structures. “Follies” are architectural constructions, often extravagant or picturesque, positioned in the landscape to amuse, frame a view, or pique the viewers’ curiosity. Seven new follies designed and constructed for the exhibition are featured with six existing, historic follies placed in the garden by Henry Francis du Pont. Among the fall highlights Strand anticipates are the reflections of the Needle’s Eye at the entrance pond against the autumn colors of grasses, goldenrod, and asters in flower. Bright orange leaves of shadbush will frame views of the Brick Lookout and Bristol Summerhouse on Sycamore Hill. Thousands of lilac-colored autumn crocus will burst into bloom around the Ottoman Tent. And gardens and woodlands everywhere will flame with the russets, golds, and oranges of ancient red oaks, black oaks, poplars, and beeches. The new “follies” feature the work of contemporary architects based on designs from the 18th and 19th centuries and are a delightful addition to a landscape that

levels of French society. Consequently, early pieces from Lyon and Nevers were intended only for display. The spread of faience workshops in Nevers, Rouen, and elsewhere in France during the eighteenth century changed the status of these objects and, ultimately, their function. One of the most important changes was the use of faience to serve food. To ensure the success of their workshops, French potters, beginning in Rouen, closely followed the culinary developments at the time. For instance, they created multiple dishes in different forms and

sizes in response to the popularity of the service à la française, an elaborate style of dining wherein various components of a course were served at the same time. Such inventiveness reflects the ingenuity of French potters, who, over the course of two centuries, produced pieces of great originality and technical complexity, the finest of which are represented by impressive examples in the Knafel collection. The quality of such pieces almost obscures the fact that faience was essentially a provincial art, largely patronized and commissioned by a local aristocracy, far from the centers of political power in Versailles and Paris.
