The Stiegel-Coleman Estate And Elizabeth Furnace Sale By Karl Pass

n Sept. 28, John Hess Auction Service Inc. offered the historic Stiegel-Coleman house and Elizabeth Furnace estate along with 163 lots of antiques at an on-site sale at the property, located outside Brickerville, Pa., between Lititz and Schaefferstown. The 33-acre estate, bordering both Lancaster and Lebanon County, encompasses five principal buildings and several outbuildings. The property has been in the Coleman family since 1776 and registered as a National Historic Landmark since 1966. The wellmaintained and restored 16 room sandstone mansion has many original features: six fireplaces, an open staircase, and original cast iron fire backs. The other buildings include the original homestead (known as the Huber house), a caretaker’s house, a large sandstone stable, and a charcoal barn. The first building constructed on the property was the Huber house in 1750. Wilhelm Stiegel entered a partnership with ironmaster Jacob Huber, purchasing 400 acres in 1757. Just three years later, their enterprise totaled 10,000 acres. Around this time period, a second building was built (now the wing of the current house). Ironmaster Robert Coleman entered the fray in 1776 taking out a lease on Elizabeth Furnace. Coleman was an Irish immigrant and ascended as a successful furnace operator within the region’s iron industry. The industry was a major economy engine in Pennsylvania throughout the 18th century and beyond. During the American Revolution, production focused on munitions, yet iron furnaces also produced cast iron stoves, such as five-plate jamb stoves,

and firebacks. Coleman built the formal mansion in 1790. At its peak, Elizabeth Furnace and Plantation was a very large-scale, nearly self-sufficent community. The Coleman family ran Elizabeth Furnace until 1856. Remnants of it are in the woods adjacent to one of the barns. Changes occurred in the mid 20th century. In 1948, when the Pennsylvania Turnpike was built, it divided the property. It is 4,500 yards to the south of the main house. Recently, an archaeological study was conducted by Millersville University unearthing thousands of artifacts including coins and pottery shards. They are currently on display at the university, locat-

Coleman was sold on Jan. 16, 1998, at Christie’s in New York City. They lived on the Main Line of Philadelphia and were Bill Coleman’s parents. Their collection was written about in a “Living with Antiques” feature article by Lita Solis-Cohen in the April 1966 issue of The Magazine Antiques. The 161-lot sale at Christie’s grossed $2,803,853. Included in the sale was material having descended in the family, plus a significant John Hess, with the aid of Phil Nissley, is shown at the podicollection of Early American um selling the real estate. It holds the distinction as being the first piece of American furniture to be sold at auction for over $1 million. Among the furniture sold at the on-site sale held by Hess was a Simon Willard Federal mahogany tall-case clock from Roxbury, Mass., that sold for $48,000. The winning bidder was Bill Coleman’s daughter, seated in the front row under the tent. His daughter was also the high bidder for the important Thomas Sully painting done Nov. 2 to Dec. 18, 1846, depicting two of James Coleman’s daughters. It was $145,000 and was underbid by a private collector. (Continued on page 2)

ed in Millersville, Pa. Bill Coleman is the eighth-generation owner and the seller of the estate. The sale started at 10 a.m. and the real estate sold at 11. John Hess sold the property for $2,000,000 to a family member. “It stayed in the family,” stated auctioneer Phil Nissley. “As a family, we’re happy about that,” said Bill Coleman, following the sale. An open house held on Sept. 26 was well-attended, as was the sale itself. Guided tours were offered for a $20 per person admission charge. The fee was required to attend the auction on the 28th as well. Proceeds benefited the Lancaster County Historical Society. Charging admission is not a common practice at estate sales, but it served as a fundraising tool for the society, View of the caretaker’s house located behind which is a part of the larger LancasterHistory.org organization. There was no buyer’s premium. Including the real estate, the sale garnered $2,535,000. “It was a lot of work, but we wanted to make it more than just a sale; we wanted an event,” said Phil Nissley of John Hess Auction Service, Inc. “I thought John Hess did an excellent job. It was a large undertaking,” noted Coleman. This wasn’t the first time Coleman family material was This is the Huber house, the oldest building on the prop- sold at auction. The collection of erty. Market conditions for Early American furniture were vastly different 15 years ago. The Annual Bucks County Antiques Dealers Association Show To Be Held Nov. 9 And 10

S807211

The Bucks County Antiques Dealers Association (BCADA) proudly presents its 2013 annual antiques show on Saturday, Nov. 9, and Sunday, Nov. 10. The event has moved to the Eagle Fire Hall on Rt. 202 and Sugan Road in New Hope, Pa. The times on Saturday are

10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday. Admission is $6 or $5 with postcard or advertisement. Children under 16 will be admitted free. Parking is free. Returning to the show will be members from the Pennsylvania Antiques Appraisers Association on Sunday only from noon to 3. They will give verbal appraisals at $10 per item anything except jewelry. There is a three-item limit per person. The association president and show chairperson, Bill D’Anjolell, likes the new location because it is easy to find and provides plenty of free parking. The show was cancelled due to Hurricane Sandy last year. D’Anjolell fielded phone calls from many patrons and promised that the 2013 show will be better than ever. The BCADA has been in existence since 1966 and is one of the few clubs of its kind that has produced a show almost every year. For more information, call 215-290-3140 or visit www.BCADAPA.org.

Celebrate The History Of America’s Oldest Brewery New Book Shares The History Of D.G. Yuengling & Son Inc. Using Stunning Collection Of Vintage Images

The newest addition to Arcadia Publishing’s popular “Images of America series is “D.G. Yuengling & Son, Inc. from author Robert A. Musson, M.D., with a foreword by Dick Yuengling. The book boasts more than 200 vintage images, which commemorate Yuengling’s 184 years of continuous operation. Known as America’s Oldest Brewery, D.G. Yuengling & Son Inc. of Pottsville has been in continuous operation since 1829. Since its start, Yuengling has been prudently managed by the Yuengling family. Overcoming the 14 dry years of Prohibition, Yuengling persevered due in part to the ingenuity and creativity of its owners and loyalty of its consumers. Unlike many of the regional brewers who were forced to close their doors over time, Yuengling found a niche for itself beginning in the late 1980s. With the introduction of Yuengling Lager and Black & Tan, the brand became a sensation in and around Philadelphia. The popularity of the beverages led to Yuengling being distributed in 14 states, making it the largest Americanowned brewery. Through more than 220 historic images “D.G. Yuengling & Son, Inc., tells the story of this legendary American company. Highlights of “D.G. Yuengling & Son, Inc. include previously rarelyseen images that focus on the six generations of the Yuengling family. The majority of these images have been provided by the

Yuengling family from their own archives. A chronicle of the company’s ability to remain in business during Prohibition, primarily through the operation of its associated dairy division and the production of ice cream is also included. The book also showcases a wide variety of early and rare labels, cans and signs used to market the beer, as well as early images of the delivery wagons, trucks and equipment used for brewing. “D.G. Yuengling & Son, Inc. is available at area bookstores, independent retailers, and online retailers, or through Arcadia Publishing at 888-313-2665 or online. Arcadia Publishing is the leading publisher of local and regional history in the United States. To learn more, visit www.arcadia publishing.com. “D.G. Yuengling & Son, Inc. by Robert A. Musson, M.D., Foreword by Dick Yuengling Images of America Series Arcadia Publishing Price: $21.99 128 pages. Softcover.

Identifying Authentic Audubon Prints have millions of tiny colored dots that you can easily see with a magnifier. On the other hand, original hand-colored prints will have a smooth appearance. One exception to this rule is the Amsterdam Edition from the 1970s, which is considered an “investment reproduction of the same size as the Havell Edition (more about the Havell edition below). Amsterdams do have the photolithographic dots that you won’t find on earlier prints. However, you can look for the “G Schut and Zonen (JR)(OT) Audubon watermark on the page to discern it from other copies. Audubon prints were originally sold to subscribers, who generally would have them trimmed and bound into volumes. While most of those original prints did end up bound

book plates (made during and since the 1930s) that have been cut out and framed, while others are calendar prints or promotional pieces, all made from the 1940s forward. According to Audubon collectors, these reproductions are only worth the value of the frames they’re in. It’s fine to buy one of these reproductions to hang on your wall as long as the seller didn’t misrepresent the repro as an original print, for which you ended up paying hundreds or thousands of dollars. So how can you dif-

ferentiate between an authentic Audubon print and a contemporary reproduction that someone claimed had been sitting in their great-grandfather’s closet for the past hundred years? There are several ways to do this. The easiest thing to check is the image itself. The majority of original Audubon print series were hand-colored with period watercolors, whereas modern prints will

in book form, a small number of unbound, untrimmed prints still exist. And when it comes to authenticating Audubon prints, size definitely matters. You can immediately eliminate prints on contemporary paper sizes, those ranging between 8by-10 and 16-by-20 inches, which fall in between the measurements of oversized original Audubon prints and their smaller octavo prints (printed between 1840 and 1871). The various Audubon editions were printed on different sizes of paper, but none were the same as typical modern paper sizes. For example, the original Birds of America Havell Edition aquatints, created between 1826 and 1838, were double elephant folio size, approximately 26-by-39 inches (unless they’ve been trimmed) and were printed on heavy stock. You would most likely see evidence if a sheet had been bound, such as small slits or holes along one edge from being stitched into volumes. The reason these sheets were so large is that John James Audubon drew all

the birds with life-sized proportions, which is another important thing to check for. By holding the paper up to a light source, you can look for the correct watermark for each edition. For the Havell

edition, look for either J. Whatman or J. Whatman Turkey Mill (Whatman was the papermaker); each would be followed by a date within the Havell Edition range of (Continued on page 20)

1826 to 1838. One exception is that a previous owner may have trimmed the margins to the point of eliminating the watermark in order to fit the print into a particular frame. In that case, you’d have to show the piece to an expert or use other means of authentication. Text that wouldn’t have

appeared on originals from any edition would be another red flag. This would include the name of an insurance company, historical society, the words “Limited Edition or anything else that might indicate that the illustration was a premium, from a calendar, etc. Original Havell edition sheets would have a plate mark on each print; this is an impressed, rectangular, colorless mark. There would also

be a printed plate number in Roman numerals located in the upper right-hand corner. Bien Editions can pose a different problem. While the pages are still double elephant folios and the birds are drawn in life-sized proportions, images of smaller birds were printed on one sheet of paper. The problem with this is that “Bien will be in the text at the bottom right corner of the page, not on each image. In addition, Bien pages had no watermarks. So if a previous owner wanted to frame those smaller images separately,

they would cut the sheet in half to separate the two images. Because of this, the text with the Bien credit will only appear on one of those images. So if you see a smaller potential Bien image without the expected text, you’ll need do further investigation to authenticate it. ored with Winterthur’s Henry Francis du Pont Award for distinguished contributions to American arts in 1994. The first recipient of the Wendell D. Garrett Award is Gerald W.R. Ward, Senior Consulting Curator and The Katharine Lane Weems Senior Curator of American Decorative Arts and Sculpture Emeritus, Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. “It is a great honor for Winterthur to present the inaugural Wendell D. Garrett Award to Gerald W.R. Ward. Like Wendell, Gerry stands as a benchmark for excellence in American decorative arts and history, selflessly sharing his lightly worn yet considerable knowledge with students and scholars from every discipline,” said Tom Savage, Director of Museum Affairs at Winterthur. “Wendell’s contributions to popular print and broadcast media, support of symposia and seminars across the country, and ability to engage the seasoned connoisseur and the fledgling student alike made him particularly effective in engaging the public in an understanding and appreciation of America’s art, architecture, and history.” Winterthur created the Wendell D. Garrett Award in cooperation with Garrett’s family as a way to preserve and share his legacy. A

vided scores of book reviews. “Gerry’s distinguished contributions to these disciplines, coupled with this embodiment of many of Wendell’s trademark qualities, make him a fitting recipient of the first presentation of this esteemed award,” Savage said. Jane Nylander, Historic New England President Emerita, noted “Gerry’s service as a meticulous scholar (and his) high standards, integrity, and sense of humor have greatly enriched our understanding of American history and decorative arts.” Patricia Kane, Friends of American Arts Curator of American Decorative Arts at Yale University Art Gallery, defined Gerry’s special gift as a deep understanding of American history that appears throughout his writings on a broad range of topics pertaining to American material culture. A 1971 graduate of Harvard, Ward earned his Ph.D. in American Studies from Boston University. He has organized exhibitions on subjects as diverse as Colonial American silver, Dale Chihuly, folk art, and contemporary studio furniture and crafts. Ward’s numerous publications include

He and his wife, Barbara, live in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. They have two adult sons, a daughter-in-law, and a oneyear-old grandson. “It hardly needs saying that I am grateful to Gerry, as are many others, for his profound contributions to the field and for his freely shared

Ward will receive the inaugural Wendell D. Garrett Award on Saturday, Nov. 9, at 6 p.m. during the 50th annual Delaware Antiques Show at the Chase Center on the Riverfront in Wilmington, Del. “Screwpull: Creation & History Of A High-Tech Corkscrew” By Donald Minzenmayer After more than two centuries, the process of opening a bottle of wine changed significantly in the 1970s with the introduction of the screwpull. “Screwpull: Creation & History of a High-Tech Corkscrew” is a new book release by Schiffer Publishing Ltd. It is the story of the development and realization of one of the best devices in the world for removing a cork from a wine bottle - the screwpull and its inventor, Herbert Allen. Alongside hundreds of examples of experimental prototypes, patent drawings, and many production models, the story unfolds to reveal Allen’s conceptualization of how the screwpull should work and how imitation knockoffs affected his market. The story goes on to detail the events following Allen’s death - the transfer of the company to LeCreuset of France and the production of

new models. A beautifully illustrated and detailed history of this remarkable product, “Screwpull” is the perfect addition to the libraries of corkscrew collectors, product designers, and wine aficionados. For more information, visit www.schiffer books.com.

The Vaux Hill Sale By David Iames

It took a five-hour auction for the selections from the Robert and Barbara Safford collection, amassed over 20 years at their Vaux Hill estate and residence near Valley Forge, Pa., to be scattered far and wide. The prices the items commanded at the sale were equally out of sight. The auction was held Sept. 25 at Freeman’s, located at 1808 Chestnut St. in Philadelphia. In a post-sale news release announcing results of the “white glove” event, one This ormolu-mounted Russian at which no lot went unsold, imperial porcelain urn brought Freeman’s said the 274 cata$494,500 at the Safford sale. loged lots, most of which

were continental furniture and decorative items, brought $3.9 million, more than three times the presale estimate. All told, the news release stated, 267 lots actually auctioned (after a few withdrawals and additions) drew nearly 400 potential buyers via the phones, online, and in the room. Because of the fierce bidding, it lasted twice as long as what otherwise would have been a 2-1/2hour event. Mrs. Safford, whose husband died several years ago, was selling the items and moving from Vaux Hill, where they had lived since 1991. Vaux Hill takes its

and occupied in the mid1900s by the legendary Pennsylvania state Democratic chairman Peter Camiel. About half of the total lots went to just two bidders

in the salesroom, one from Russia and one from East Asia. This included two of the top six items that brought six-figure prices: a gilt metalmounted porcelain and giltwood secretaire cabinet with a presale estimate of $40,000 to $60,000 that went for $254,500 and a pair of rare Russian hand-painted and gilt decorated blue ground vases, expected to bring $4,000 to $6,000, that sold for $482,500 (all prices include buyer’s premium). The secretaire cabinet, the auction’s first lot, went to the most acquisitive of the buyers “in the chairs,” as auctioneers like to call live bidders: a young man of Asian descent who refused to identify himself by name or nationality or to pose for a (Continued on page 25)

this auction sold is a testament to the Saffords’ ability to find the best examples of European decorative arts,” said Freeman’s chairman Samuel M. “Beau” Freeman II, who took over for Walker for the final 70 lots. “Yesterday was an exciting day for everyone involved.” One reason for the “white

buyer’s final acquisitions was a French patinated relief plaque depicting men in 17thcentury costumes swordfighting in the street. The presale estimate was $600 to $800, but Freeman let it go for $375. “It’s here to be sold,” he said. For more, visit www.free mansauction.com.

Delightfully Designed: The Furniture And Life Of Nathan Lombard This fall, Old Sturbridge Village (OSV) celebrates the life of acclaimed Massachusetts cabinetmaker Nathan Lombard (17771847) with a new exhibit, “Delightfully Designed: The Furniture and Life of Nathan Lombard,” on display Oct. 19 through May 4, 2014. The OSV exhibit represents the largest reunion of Nathan Lombard’s furniture since it left his workshop in the early 1800s. Many of the 15 Lombard pieces in the exhibit are from private collections and rarely on public view. Others are on loan from museums and will travel great distances to be part of the exhibit. Old Sturbridge Village is one of 11 institutions taking part in “Four Centuries o f Massachusetts Furniture,” a year-long collaborative project to celebrate the Bay State’s legacy of furniture-making through exhibitions, demonstrations, lectures and publications. For more, visit www.four centuries.org. Lombard’s story is an important one for OSV to tell; the talented cabinetmaker spent his life in Central Massachusetts towns surrounding Sturbridge. He was born in Brimfield in 1777, married in Sturbridge in 1802, and settled in Sutton in 1805. Born a farmer’s son, Lombard was in some

ways a very ordinary man, but his furniture is anything but ordinary. Lombard’s mastery of intricate inlay, the embedding of thin wood veneers into a solid surface, makes him stand out among his peers. Charismatic eagles, elaborate vines, and floral motifs decorate his pieces. Veins on leaves and petals on flowers are executed with exquisite detail. Carved, curving details seem effortlessly sculpted. “Lombard also had a refined eye for proportion and balance,” noted Christie Jackson, Desk with bookcase, attributed to Nathan Lombard, possibly Sutton, Mass., circa 1805. Courtesy of Winterthur Museum, Bequest of Henry Francis du Pont.

OSV curator of decorative arts. “One only needs look at the seven-foot-tall desk-withbookcase owned by the Winterthur Museum with its carved top pediment and imposing presence to realize that Lombard’s level of craftsmanship was unlike most of his contemporaries in rural Massachusetts. This stunning piece, on loan to OSV from Winterthur, will be a highlight of OSV’s exhibit.” OSV recently acquired two important pieces of furniture crafted by Nathan Lombard, a chest of drawers and a rare drop-leaf table. Both will be on display in the new exhibit. “The dropleaf table is an exciting new

form for Lombard; no other examples are known,” said Jackson. “This table has the characteristics of cherry wood and light and dark string inlay that we have

come to expect in Lombard pieces. And on the underside of the table’s top, one can see round indents left from sewing-birds. These useful ‘third hand’ clamps held a

New Exhibit At Old Sturbridge Village Debuts Oct. 19 piece of cloth, leaving the sewer’s hands free to work.” Lombard produced many chests of drawers, often with a slight variation in inlay and shape. Some, like the bowfront chest acquired by OSV, had simplified inlay designs

and simple-curve case construction. This made them less costly to produce and less expensive to purchase, making it possible for less affluent families to afford finely crafted, but more (Continued on page 31)

Something New At The 44th Greater York Antiques Show There’s something new at the 44th Greater York Antiques Show to be held Friday and Saturday, Nov. 1 and 2, in Memorial Hall of the York Expo Center in York, Pa. After 43 years under the management of Jim and Donna Burk, the twice-a-year

Americana from the 1700s to the 1950s, the show is as much an educational experience as an antiques show. The dealers are happy to share the provenance of pieces they have on display and make suggestions for displaying the piece in the potential buyer’s home or business. After the economic doldrums of the past few years, the Greater York Antiques Show has bounced back with a sizable roster of dealers that exceeds previous years. The new managers have tapped into their years of experience to make the Greater York Antiques Show a must-visit for both dealers and buyers. Bob Bockius has long been associated with show promotions and management. His company, Mitchell

Displays, has long provided display cases for shows throughout the Eastern and Midwestern United States.

A Grand September Fine & Decorative Arts Auction For Alderfer Auction local collection. Another highlight was a Lyon & Healy harp, which had a preestimate of $500-$1,000 and hammered down at $5,535.

Alderfer’s had an incredible amount of interest on the many Walter E. Baum paintings offered, especially the winter scenes, “Road by the River” and “Lard Mill, Quakertown.” These paintings had buyers from around the world bidding by phone, over the Internet, and live in the salesroom. Ultimately, the battle for “Road by the River” came down to the phones and sold to a bidder from Texas for $57,000, making the painting the fourth highest price paid for a Baum; the highest being sold

by Alderfer’s since 2007. “Lard Mill, Quakertown,” had competitive phone, floor, and Internet bidding as well, selling for $21,600, going to a buyer bidding by phone. A pair of William Aiken Walker portraits brought international interest and sold for $11,700. It had a pre-sale estimate of $5,000-$7,000. Another standout was the 22” Harry Bertoia sound sculpture from an Allentown, Pa., estate. It was acquired from the artist through his relationship as a steel salesman. It (Continued on page 29)

A fine paint-decorated corner cupboard from the Jacob Hoestedler family of Lancaster, Pa., made its way back to Pennsylvania by traveling 1,500 miles on the back of pickup truck from South Dakota. The piece had been passed down through the Hoestedler family and ended up out West due to a military assignment. It was one of the highlights of Alderfer Auction’s Fine & Decorative Arts auction on Sept. 12, where it sold for $24,000. The pre-sale estimate was $4,000-$6,000. Prices were strong for furniture in the auction, with 27 of the 43 furniture lots selling at or above estimate. A Peter Stretch tall-case clock and one by Joseph Wills realized $10,200 and $9,000 respectively. Both came from a

Still Life Oil Painting By William Harnett Could Realize $200,000-$300,000 At Shannon’s On Oct. 24 What was originally planned as a Fall sale of perhaps 250 works of art spanning several genres at Shannon’s Fine Art Auctioneers has turned into a 300 lot colossus, as quality last-minute consignments continued to pour in. The auction will be held in Shannon’s spacious gallery, located at 354 Woodmont Road in Milford, Conn., starting promptly at 6 p.m. Several blockbuster lots have been added to a roster that already boasted noted, listed artists such as Charles Courtenay Curran, Franz Kline, Jane Peterson, Dwight Tryon and others. One of the latest is a gorgeous rendering by William Harnett (18481892), one of America’s most

Those three consignments were secured some time ago. In addition to the Harnett, however, other last-minute surprises will include an amazing pair of mural-sized works of Asian performers backstage by the young Israeli artist Roy Nachum (b. 1979, est. $60,000-$80,000 and $40,000-$60,000). Nachum has become very popular in the Hollywood scene during his meteoric rise. His work is in the collections of such notables as Justin Timberlake, Kanye West and Leonardo DiCaprio. in Santa Fe, N.M., in 1927. Fechin, born on the banks of the Volga River, became one of America’s foremost ethnic portrait painters in the early 20th century. The third is an important Impressionist landscape by the Virginia born artist Elliott Daingerfield (1859-1932). Daingerfield was a talented watercolorist who painted his colorful, mystical landscapes mainly from memory. He built a strong reputation and following at a young age, and is best known for his depictions of the Grand Canyon, which he first visited in 1911. The fourth is a work by the renowned plein-air Impressionist painter Fern Coppedge (1883-1951), titled “A New Hope Snow Scene.” Coppedge, born in Illinois, was active in Pennsylvania and was the only major female painter in the New Hope School (along with M. Elizabeth Price). Coppedge was especially noted for her snowscene landscapes of New Hope. Three names that need no introduction to art enthusiasts are Andy Warhol, Marc Chagall and Roy Lichtenstein. The market for works by Warhol continues to be strong. Marc Chagall (18871985) will be represented with three works, titled “Couple de Paysans,” “Moses and the Table of the Law,” and “The Tribe of Levi.” Chagall was born Moishe Shagal, but when he became a foremost member of the Ecole de Paris, he adopted French citizenship and the French spelling of his name. Three screenprints by Roy Lichtenstein (19231997) will also cross the block. From his studio in New York City, Lichtenstein did cartoon-inspired paintings that helped launch the Pop Art movement. He was unique in that he developed a

new visual language in an avant-garde style that was disruptive to viewers and yet was accessible and popular with them as well. To learn more, visit www.shannons.com.

Skinner Auction Of American And European Works Of Art Led By Sale Of Fitz Henry Lane Painting

“Camden Mts. From the Graves,” by Fitz Henry Lane, sold for $1,384,000 at Skinner’s on Sept. 20.

Skinner Inc. is pleased to announce robust results from its auction of American & European Works of Art, held Sept. 20. The sale brought in a total of $3,224,049.85, including buyer’s premium, demonstrating Skinner’s continued strength in the sale of fine paintings, prints, and photography. The auction firm remains a leader in the sale of works by the American painter and printmaker Fitz Henry Lane. This auction featured Lane’s “Camden Mts. From the Graves,” which sold for $1,384,000. In 2004, Skinner achieved a world-record price for the artist, with the sale of “Manchester Harbor” selling for $5,506,000. “This latest Fitz Henry Lane sold particularly well, as it is an exquisite example of the artist’s work. It has the wonderful stillness and luminous quality one expects in a Lane,” observed Robin Starr, Vice President and Director of American & European Works of Art. “We rarely see new works by the artist come up for auction, so this painting was an especially exciting offering.” Also performing strongly was the the Robert Bunting Dance collection, consisting of more than 150 lots of paintings, drawings, sculpture, prints, and photography, pertaining to ballet and modern

dance. The distinguished collection, spanning the 17th century to the present day, had a sell-through rate of 99 percent (by value), smashing its high estimate. The Jerome Robbins Dance Division of The New York Public Library for the Performing Arts purchased several works from this collection. “The Bunting Collection was a great opportunity to see a really unique grouping of works. While the circle of people who collect dancerelated art is fairly small, they are very passionate about the material, as illustrated by the results of this auction,” continued Starr. Many of the auction’s top lots came from this single owner collection, including a costume design by Léon Bakst for the marchioness in “The Sleeping Beauty,” which sold for $66,000, more than quadrupling the pre-sale high estimate. Also performing well was Pavel Tchelitchew’s “Group of Dancers in a Scene from L’Errante,” which sold for $26,400, well over the $1,500-$2,000 pre-sale estimate; and a poster maquette by Georges De Pogédaïeff for the “Ballets Russes de Monte Carlo,” which doubled the low estimate, fetching $20,400. Skinner Inc. has galleries in Boston and Marlborough, Mass. For more information, visit www.skinnerinc.com.

One example is the 1826 friendship album of Brimfield resident Harriot Janes, which contains entries from many of Lombard’s nieces and cousins, including Mary Allen, daughter of Ezra Allen.
