This Week: The Big Move Going from a 2,400-squarefoot house to an 1,800square-foot house definitely called for some life changes. Further, as an avid collector of veneered furniture, I realized that moving to the land of 5 percent relative humidity will destroy much of my collection. So, it was time for a change. Changing collecting habits is both an interesting intellectual endeavor and a painful one! I have collected since I was a preteen and have passed through many different phases of collecting in my life. My earliest haunts were seashells

asked to bring their collections to Auction. In 2012 Lancaster, Pennsylvania, collector Ron Hoin passed away suddenly. Says the auctioneer, “Ron was a long time collector who had quietly assembled an absolutely w o n d e r f u l Wallace Nutting Collection that included quantity, quality, and rarity. Ron had an eye for rarity and he bought only the best. He cleaned and preserved most of his pictures, tastefully reframed pictures that needed a new frame and, as a result, most pictures from the Hoin Collection are absolutely beautiful.” Ron’s family asked Ivankovich to sell this collection in its entirely and nothing has been held back. AUCTION SALE BILLS
Fooled By Fakes - Buyer Beware! by Anita Stratos Lladro - A Passion For Porcelain
Gracious style and sophistication – no matter what the subject matter, Lladro designs portray elegant perspectives of people,
tant. Most times, imitations are not of the same quality as Lladro figurines, and some imitations are marked with only “Made in Spain”.
animals and objects. The soft, fluid lines and gentle facial expressions have captivated collectors since the company was founded by the Lladro brothers in 1953, and retired pieces can increase in value significantly. Even Michael Jackson couldn’t resist the allure of Lladro – his collection consisted of at least 300 pieces. Jackson is one of a number of celebrities who have purchased Lladro figurines and visited the Lladro factory and store in Spain. The popularity of Lladro has spawned many counterfeits and imitations, so this is another area of collecting where developing a good eye for authentic pieces is impor-
According to “Collecting Lladro Identification and Price Guide” by Peggy Whiteneck (a must-have for Lladro lovers), the following Spanish companies are not affiliated with Lladro but they do make similar pieces: Nadal (this is not the same as Nadal Collectibles), Porceval, Cascades, Miguel Riquena, Valencia, Rex, and a number of other companies whose names can be found in Whiteneck’s book. However, according to their website, Lladro does have several other brands, which can cause confusion among new collectors. One of these brands is NAO, and their website (www.naoporce-
lain.com) explains how the brand evolved as follows: Rosal (1967, the first commercialized pieces); Zaphir (1975); NAO (1982). It wasn’t until the NAO emergence in 1982 that the ship logo was added, and this mark has changed throughout the years. You can see all of the logos on the NAO website, as well as their history and how their pieces are made. NAO marks have also been faked by some unscrupulous sellers; examples of fake NAO marks and explanations of what to look for can be seen at El Portal Porcelana (www.elportalporcelana.info) . One other name you may also see on later Lladro figurines is Daisa - according to Lladro.com, Daisa is “the name of the Lladró company which holds the intellectual property rights for the figurines.” The best way to check the authenticity of a piece, if there’s no box or serial number, is to find the item in a company picture catalog, such as a Lladro Authorized Reference Guide. If your piece is not in the Reference Guide, that still doesn’t mean it’s not authentic – there are some unmarked early pieces. In fact, Lladro itself is willing to help you identify any questionable or unidentifiable piece. Just send the reference number of your piece and a photograph of its base to their Consumer Relations Department, and they’ll be happy to authenticate the piece for you. That’s how committed Lladro is to weed-
ing fakes and counterfeits out of the marketplace. Even though Lladro has gone to great lengths to protect it designs and marks, there are still counterfeit marks out there. Twelve years ago, the company destroyed 5,000 Chinese counterfeits of a dozen Lladro designs; these were found at a warehouse in Spain and would have brought the counterfeiters a minimum of $1 million if the pieces had found their way into circulation. These were not the only counterfeits that Lladro discovered, and the company remains alert against such copyright violations. (Recently I became aware that counterfeit Lladro figurines are also originating in Mexico, though most seem to come from China. Lladro
itself emphasizes that all of its pieces are made exclusively in Spain.). Whiteneck stresses that knowing true Lladro style, quality, and marks is extremely important in protecting your investment and collection against fakes and counterfeits. Although Lladro doesn’t sell defective pieces, they do sell “seconds” through their factory store outlets, where you’ll also find newly retired pieces. Typically, the quality of these seconds is so good that buyers might have a hard time finding defects. You’ll know that a Lladro piece is of second quality if you see the flower logo ground off. However, this can cause a bit of confusion because collectors may think the piece is a counterfeit and another company’s mark has been scraped off. Unfortunately, the Lladro flower mark is even scraped off of the newly retired pieces being sold through outlet stores. This lowers the value of the piece quite a bit. Like so many things, there’s an exception to every rule. In this case, logo flowers are also ground off one-of-a-kind prototypes that were never put into production. Occasionally such a rare item does turn up, but full research must be done to confirm that it’s actually a prototype. Typically, Lladro fakes/counterfeits will be heavier, coarser, and not as well painted as the real things, though some are becoming more sophisticated. When it comes to the mark, beware of illegible
logos or any other irregularities including color as well as an incorrect accent and trademark over the “o”. The Lladro mark has changed throughout the decades, but you can see dated examples of the various marks from
1960 through the present at The Prudent Collector (www.theprudentcollector.co m). As is typical in most areas of collecting, forgers usually copy the more expensive and hard-to-find pieces in order to make their efforts pay off. With Lladro, the mermaid and clown figures are among the most heavily faked, though counterfeits of more averaged-priced pieces have been found. Forged pieces may have sloppier paint work and less crisp (Continued on page 16)

Read’s Coaxer - $35,555.
St. Thomas Read was a well-known cutler in Dublin circa 1790. It was sold by Donald Bull, the prominent corkscrew collector and author of 21 books on corkscrews. That record lasted one day. On Day 2, after spirited bidding, a very fine example of the famous Robert Jones 2 corkscrew - 1842 English registration reached $36,780. The Jones 2 is not as rare as the Read’s Coaxer - perhaps 10 good examples are known to exist in private collections. However, it is a beautiful and marvelously designed piece and perhaps is the corkscrew most prized by collectors. It is marked “Robert Jones & Son, Birmingham on the brass barrel. The 2 steel spikes on the end of the barrel assist in removing the cork. Most collectors enjoy the “thrill of the chase while seeking out the rare and unusual and then finding a “treasure at a bargain price. One of the sellers in this auction found a very rare corkscrew in a Los Angeles thrift shop several months ago for $39. He decided to auction this corkscrew known as the Philos Blake corkscrew; it was the first corkscrew patented in the United States with patent #27,665 dated March 27, 1860. It is one of the rarest of United States patented corkscrews and in this auction realized a selling price of $5,000. On a historical note, Philos Blake was a nephew of the Eli Whitney, famous

Figurines with black outlines around the eyes or eyelids should be viewed with skepticism, since Lladro doesn’t typically do this. The auction had a few musical instruments as well: a Steinway & Sons living room grand piano from 1910, a Gibson Mastertone banjo, and a limited edition Richelieu banjo for the 100th anniversary of the Philadelphia Mummers. The piano drew enormous interest and caused quite the bidding war between the floor, the phones, and the Internet. After reaching $24,000, it sold to a bidder on the floor. The banjos sold to the same Artfact.com bidder for $1,230 and $923 respectively, exceeding their presale esti-

mates of $500 to $700 for the Gibson and $300 to $500 for the Richelieu. One surprise of the day was the 1818 needlework by Lydia Noble from the Philadelphia Union School. The presale estimate was $400 to $600 and after some very lively bidding between the phones, floor, and Internet, it sold to the floor for $3,803. Another was the 8-day tall case clock by Jacob Hagey of Hilltown, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, a prominent family of Montgomery County clock makers. It brought $8,180 when it had an estimate of $3,000 to $5,000. The clock made its way to Alderfer’s on the roof

When he decided to sell the clock, he wisely chose to bring it back to the region it was originally crafted and to Alderfer Auction since they have such a great reputation for selling Hagey clocks. A l d e r f e r Auction is currently accepting consignments for Arts auction on December the next Fine and Decorative 13th as well as for the Winter

Militar y Fans Heeded The Call To Bid In Old Toy Soldier Auction’s Sale Of Pr ominent Collections Battle lines were drawn in the sand long before Old Toy Soldier Auctions conducted its June 2 to 3 sale featuring the collections of Bob Bailey and the late K. Warren Mitchell. “Absentee bidding was brisk,” said OTSA’s owner, Ray Haradin, describing bidder interest in the runup to the 1,247-lot sale. “There were 117 absentee bidders. Add to that, 14 phone bidders and another 220 people online and we had all the
makings for a very exciting event.” The Pittsburgh-held sale realized $385,000 (inclusive of 20 percent buyer’s premium) and resulted in “a lot of very happy buyers,” Haradin said. The auction offerings were led by a strong mix of early Britains acquired by Bob Bailey in the 1970s during his world travels as a Pan Am flight attendant, as well as rare soldiers from the revered Warren Mitchell col-
lection. A respected veteran dealer and collector, Mitchell’s influence can be seen in many of today’s top collections. “I know many people in the Medieval knight Sieur de Crevecoeur, signed by the artist/creator Richard Courtenay, $1,560. Old Toy Soldier Auctions image.
hobby who bought their very first set of soldiers from Warren. His reputation created a high level of anticipation leading up to the sale,” Haradin said. Britains military figures performed extremely well during the Saturday session of the Internet, absentee and phone auction, which was devoted primarily to pre1970 productions. An excellent
Britains display set #1905 titled “Officers and Men of the U.S. Army Air Corps” contained 16 uniformed figures, all still tied in place inside their original box. Produced in 1940-1941, the set estimated at $2,000 to $3,000 marched to a winning bid of $5,860, making it the top lot of the sale. Another very rare military set, a Pfeiffer 12-piece representation of a U.S. mounted officer and 11 infantrymen, was presented with its original box and entered in the sale with an $1,800 to $2,200 estimate. “This was probably the most sought-after item in the sale,” Haradin observed. Made of composition in 90mm size, the soldiers stood at attention as a

new owner claimed them for $4,920. Postwar Britains made a strong impression, as well, especially the US Civil War display set #2070 with original box. Comprising 30 pieces, the selection played no favorites, with an equal selection of Union and Confederate cavalry, infantry and artillery figures. It sold for $2,340, nearly twice its Britains 16-piece U.S. Army Air Corps set #1905, 1940-1941 high estimate. issue only, top lot of the sale, $5,860.
