Massive Cast-Iron And Pressed Steel Toy Collection To Roll Through Three-Day Rich Penn Auction Nov. 2, 3, And 4 Sale To Feature Over 1,600 Lots As autumn rolls around, Rich Penn is preparing for his Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, Nov. 2, 3, and 4, auction. Featured in the threeday event will be several hundred pressed steel and cast iron toys. Penn’s auction will be held at the Five Sullivan Bros. Convention Center in Waterloo, Iowa. The Ramada, adjoining the convention center, is the host hotel. “Our fall auction will be jampacked with over 1,600 lots of great things, many that likely began their life under the Christmas tree,” according to Penn. “We have hundreds of great signs for ice cream, Coca-Cola, other sodas and petroliana. There is also a lot of coinoperated machines, jukeboxes, slot

Buddy L is among the iconic names in the toy world. With roots that reach to Moline, Ill., and the M o l i n e Pressed Steel Co., toys entered their production in 1921. Founder Fred A. Lundhal wanted a different, better toy for his 6-year old son, Arthur. He wanted a toy that could stand up to rough play. The toys were an instant success, and the line became Buddy “L,” named after Lundhal’s son, who was nicknamed Buddy L in the 15th Street neighborhood where they lived in Moline’s Velie addition. Buddy L toys were the ones every young boy wanted, and the company produced an expansive range of toys for every young lad’s imagination. World War II changed everything. With the restriction on steel supplies, the demise of Buddy L pressed steel toys was imminent. Following the war, plastics dominated the toy industry. But there’s more than pressed steel. There’s a wide selection of cast-iron toys, Continued on page 2

Swann Auction Galleries’ auction of Printed and Manuscript Americana on Sept. 27 was the highest-earning Americana auction at the house in the last six years, bringing $1.2 million with 85 percent of lots selling. The day opened with a bustling auction room and a slew of bids for the morning session of the Harold Holzer collection of Lincolniana and was proceeded by an equally successful afternoon session. Top lots from noted Abraham Lincoln scholar Harold Holzer’s collection included “Portrait of the Beardless Lincoln,” by John C. Wolfe, w h i c h brought in $40,000; a fourth edition of the famous “Wigwam Print,” the first stand-alone print of Lincoln, which

sold for $21,250; and a commission of William O. Stoddard as secretary to the president signed by Lincoln, 1861, which brought a record $18,750 for a printed commission signed by the president. The Lincolniana portion of the sale set several additional records, including one for any printing of the 16th president’s famous 1860 Cooper Union address at $5,000. Winfred Porter Truesdell’s important reference work, “Engraved and Lithographed Portraits of Abraham Lincoln,” 1933, brought $4,000; an Andrew Johnson impeachment trial ticket sold for $2,125; and Victor D. Brenner’s 1907 plaque, which served as the model for the Lincoln penny, was won for $4,500. The sale did not slow during the afternoon session. The top lot of the auction was Francis W. de Winton’s diary, containing notes on pow-wows with Indians during an official tour of western Canada, which sold for $65,000. Latin Americana was successful in this sale. The selection was led by Juan de la Anunciacón’s “Sermonario en Lengua Mexicana,” Mexico, 1577, a first-edition book of sermons in Nahuatl, bringing in $30,000. Maturino Gilberti’s “Thesora Spiritual en Lengua de Mechuacá,” 1558, boasted $18,750; Juan de Palafox y Mendoza’s “Historia Real Sagrada, Luz de Principes, y Subditos,” 1643, sold for $11,250. Among many institutional bidders, William & Mary College of Williamsburg, Va., won a collection of letters by Louise E. Blackmar, a Methodist missionary in India, to her stateside siblings, 1873-82.

Collector Anecdotes And Antics Collecting The Obscure: Collecting Nintendo’s First Failure Ask anyone w h o grew up in the 1990s w h a t coming By Shawn Surmick technological advancement they were most excited for, and you are bound to a get a variety of different answers. Poll enough of this demographic and the words “virtual reality,” or “VR” for short, will most likely be at the top of this list. Made popular by movies like “Tron” and “The Lawnmower Man,” virtual reality was an exciting concept in the late 1980s and early 1990s. This is quite ironic, as the concept of virtual reality was conceptualized in the late 1960s after the creation of the first computer. The concept of virtual reality would become a beloved idea among most video game enthusiasts who clamored to play some of their favorite games in an all-consuming environment free of outside distractions. The concept was so popular that in the early 1990s almost every leading video game hardware manufacturer had devoted a large portion of their research and development budget to perfecting the

concept of virtual reality. Despite some early attempts at virtual reality, it would take the video game industry until the year 2016 to perfect virtual reality for home use with the release of Sony’s Playstation VR Headset for its Playstation 4 video game console. Sadly, the Playstation VR Headset was not the first attempt to bring virtual reality into gamers’ homes. That acknowledgement goes to Nintendo, who sorely wishes you would forget its own entry into the market, bringing us to the topic of this article. Back in 1992, Nintendo was still the leader of the home video game industry. Thanks in part to its well-marketed Nintendo Entertainment System that launched in U.S. stores in 1985, Nintendo enjoyed an almost monopolistic lock on the home video game market. Their closest competitor at the time was Sega, who in 1989 released a much more powerful home video game system called the Sega Genesis. Nintendo knew they had to act fast to counter Sega’s rising dominance, and their answer would be the Super Nintendo Entertainment System. Launched in 1992, the Super Nintendo and the Sega Genesis would go head to head, with Sega

wrestling close to 50 percent of Nintendo’s longstanding market share. This angered the Japanese giant, which quickly realized that it needed to fasttrack several other projects to beat back Sega’s advance. Sega was so powerful at the time that they even managed to fight Nintendo in the handheld video game market with the launch of their own full-color device known as the Sega Game Gear. The Sega Game Gear went head to head with Nintendo’s black and white Game Boy system. In the end, the Nintendo Game Boy ended up crushing the Sega Game Gear due to the fact that Nintendo had the best games for their underpowered device. The hardware and lack of color just didn’t matter. Regardless, Nintendo was left stunned, and rumors were already circling that Sony was prepared to enter the home video game market by 1995 with a much more powerful CD-based system, thanks in part to Nintendo attempting to betray them over the creation of a defunct CD-ROM add-on for the Super Nintendo system that was never released. This caused Nintendo to make a serious miscalculation as to what video gamers really wanted. By 1993, Nintendo was

secretly working on a standalone tabletop device that brought inexpensive virtual reality into the home. Codenamed VR32, the system was quite impressive on paper because it used a 32-bit processor, which was twice as fast as the Super Nintendo’s 16-bit processor. Curiosity about the device ensured constant mainstream media attention. In November of 1994, the device was officially premiered, and hopes were high. Sadly, the critics were not kind. The device, which was now called the Nintendo Virtual Boy, was shown sitting on a tabletop standing about 15 inches tall. Players placed their head against the adjustable tabletop unit and looked through the eyeglasslike device. They were then greeted to two black and red LCD screens working in tandem, which created a 3D-like viewing experience. The system could not generate color, and all the games were done in a combination of simple 3D graphics that were red in color with a black background. The system launched in the U.S. on Aug. 16, 1995, with a retail price of $179.95. The in-pack game was called Mario’s Dream Tennis, and only three other games were available at launch. They were Red Alarm, Teleroboxer, and Galactic

Virtual Boy is one of the most sought-after vintage Nintendo systems on the market. Boxed and complete systems can be seen selling for $300 to $500 each in excellent, but used condition. The most common games, those that were readily available at launch, can be seen selling for $50 or more assuming they are complete in their box. That said, if you are lucky enough to own any of the later release games like Jack Bros. or Waterworld, then you have a prized collectible worth several hundreds of dollars today! The Virtual Boy is a system that you will most likely never play for a few hours or more. However, it is an important artifact, as it represented Nintendo’s first commercial failure ever. If you are a Nintendo collector, you owe it to yourself to at least check it out. Just don’t expect Nintendo to release the system or any of its games anytime soon, which is why, as a collector, it should appeal to you.

Pinball. Nintendo kicked off the launch with a multimillion dollar marketing campaign. Nintendo projected to sell 1.5 million units by the end of 1995, and several third-party game companies pledged support. Unfortunately, once players got to try the unit and were greeted to lackluster 3D visuals in an unappealing hue of red and black, the system tanked. Worse yet, Nintendo was facing the threat of lawsuits from angry parents who claimed the device could damage their children’s vision. After successfully conquering the video game world, Nintendo finally had their first commercial failure. Virtually (pun intended) all third-party software developers discontinued most of their projects in development for the Virtual Boy system, with a few shipped to retailers. The Virtual Boy died a quiet death as Nintendo quietly pulled the system from market in 1996 while still telling consumers that many more games were on the way. By 1997, the system could be seen selling for as little as $20 while games were being cleared out for as little as $5 each! I have many friends and fellow collectors who took full advantage of these fire sale prices. Today, the Nintendo

The Armstrong Family Collection will offer never-before-seen artifacts from his momentous lunar landing to private mementos, including pieces of a wing and propeller from the 1903 Wright Brothers flight that Armstrong took with him to the moon; a gold pin from Gemini VIII, Armstrong’s first mission; and historic correspondence about the planning that went into the moon mission. The auctions will coincide with the 50th anniversary of the historic Apollo 11 mission. “There will be flown items, autographed items, and items of historical significance, said son Mark Armstrong. “There will be items that make you think, items that make you laugh, and items that make you scratch your head. On July 20, 1969, a global audience glued to their TVs as Armstrong stepped onto the lunar surface with his now legendary words, “That’s one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind. The event marked a new era for humanity and established the United States’ technological dominance and influence as a superpower. “He was never about himself, so I would expect that he didn’t give much thought about how he would be

no smell of dampness or stale air from dirty merchandise. As we wandered around, we were asked many times in a pleasant way by dealers if they could be of help. The bathroom was spotless. Wow! What an enjoyable experience. The owners of other shops should visit and take a few lessons from how well these people manage their business. The owners as well as the vendors certainly know how to manage a first-class operation, and, as a result, there is a large waiting list for new vendors. We will be certain to return on a regular basis. Ralph Jennings - Ambler, Pa.

Exhibition At The Met To Examine The Purpose And Power Of Jewelry speak to jewelry’s capacity to channel the spiritual wellbeing of the wearer. “The Alluring Body” will explore how jewelry engenders desire. Photographs and spectacular jewels will highlight the eroticism of pearls in the Victorian era and beyond. Jewelry designed by Elsa Schiaparelli, Art Smith, Elsa Peretti, and Shaun Leane will document how contemporary artists push the limits of glamour, courting danger and even pain. “The Resplendent Body” will call out the marriage of

in order to encourage visitors to make cross-cultural comparisons. “The Divine Body” will examine one of the earliest conceptions of jewelry, its link to immortality. Featured here will be a rare head-totoe ensemble from ancient Egypt that accompanied the elite into the afterlife, as well as items from the Royal Cemetery of Ur, implicated in one of the most mysterious rituals of ancient Mesopotamia (present-day Iraq). Also highlighted will be the regalia of the rulers of Calima (present-day Colombia), who were lavishly covered in sheets of gold. “The Regal Body” will examine the use of jewelry throughout history to assert rank and status. Among the examples on display will be sapphires and pearls from Byzantium, finely wrought gold from the elites of Hellenistic Greece, and ivory and bronze from the Royal Courts of Benin. “The Transcendent Body” will focus on how jewelry is used to traverse the temporal

material and technique for the purpose of ostentation. Examples will include the opulent adornment of the Mughals; the aesthetic of accumulation in the gold and silver jewelry of the Akan and Fon peoples of West Africa; and the elegant designs of such legendary jewelry houses as Tiffany, Castellani, and Lalique. Contemporary jewelry makers, including Peter Chang, Joyce J. Scott, and Daniel Brush, who question and re-imagine notions of luxury and adornment, will also be celebrated. What is jewelry? Why do we wear it? What meanings does it convey? Opening Monday, Nov. 12, at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the exhibition “Jewelry: The Body Transformed” will traverse time and space to explore how jewelry acts upon and activates the body it adorns. This global conversation about one of the most personal and universal of art forms brings together some 230 objects drawn almost exclusively from the Met collection. A dazzling array of headdresses and ear ornaments, brooches and belts, necklaces and rings created between 2600 B.C.E. and the present day will be shown along with sculptures, paintings, prints, and photographs that will enrich and amplify the many stories of transformation that jewelry tells. The exhibition is made possible by Albion Art Co., Ltd. Additional support is provided by Alice Cary Brown and W.L. Lyons Brown, the Diane W. and James E. Burke Fund, Diane Carol Brandt, the Druckenmiller Foundation, and Galerie Magazine. If the body is a stage, jewelry is one of its most dazzling performers. Throughout history and across cultures, jewelry has served as an extension and amplification of the body, accentuating it, enhancing it, distorting it, and ultimately transforming it. Jewelry is an essential feature in the acts that make us human, be they rituals of marriage or death, celebrations or battles. At every turn, it expresses some of our highest aspirations. Exhibition Overview The exhibition will open with a dramatic installation that emphasizes the universality of jewelry, precious objects made for the body, a singular and glorious setting for the display of art. Great jewelry from around the world will be presented in a radiant display that groups these ornaments according to the part of the body they adorn: head and hair; nose, lips, and ears; neck and chest; arms and hands; and waist, ankles, and feet. The remaining galleries will be organized thematically

Unrivaled Collection Of Peter Wainwright Surpasses Lofty Expectations, Selling For $1.4 Million At Cowan’s Unique And Rare American And European Firearms Excel

This Springfield U.S. M1903 “Rod Bayonet” rifle purchased by the Governor of Pennsylvania, Samuel Pennypacker, in 1903 sold for $25,200. lofty estimate, selling for a total of $1.4 million (prices include a 17.5 percent buyer’s premium). “It was truly an honor just to handle these remarkable pieces of history,” said Jack Lewis, Cowan’s director of firearms and militaria. “Seeing these sales prices, it’s clear the bidders were just as enamored with Mr. Wainwright’s unrivaled collection as we were.” This single-owner auction featured unique and diverse examples spanning every stage of firearms development from early matchlocks to the closing days of World

The bolted lock with bridled frizzen retains all its original small parts with engraved cock screw and sparse engraving on hammer and lock plate. Rare British firearms were in high demand all day as a trio of British Nock naval volley guns made up half of the top six lots on the day. Taking the top honor of the group was a Nock 2nd model naval volley gun, which sold for

$37,600. One of only 100 made by Henry Nock for the British Board of Ordinance, this nearly pristine piece originated from the famous Clay P. Bedford collection and exhibited at the Metropolian Museum of Art during its “Early Firearms of Great Britain and Ireland” exhibit. The other two guns of the group, a civilian model Nock volley gun and a Nock 1st model naval volley gun, sold for $29,375 and $28,200, respectively. From the 20th century, a rare 1903 Springfield Mark 1 rifle with complete Pedersen device and accessories sold for $28,800. While the 1903 Springfield was issued by the U.S. Army in every military conflict from World War I through the Vietnam War, complete rifles like this with the Pedersen device and all

Other highlights from the auction included a cased pair of Joseph Manton tubelock dueling pistols that sold for $22,325, a cased J. addition to the historic provenance, the rifle itself was quite rare as it was equipped with a rod-type bayonet. Many M1903 Rifles were upgraded around 1905 to accept the newly adopted M1905 knife bayonet, and nearly all were later upgraded to the newly adopted .30-06 cartridge. A completely original .3003 caliber rod-bayonet M1903 is difficult to find, a fact that was clearly not lost on bidders. The top lot of the day was a Bowie knife presented to Davey Crockett,

$17,625, and a William III flintlock musket sold for $16,450. Peter Stuyvesant Wainwright was born in New York City in 1925. His family owned an antique store in New York City and a farm in the wetlands of Long Island, which promoted his interest in hunting, shooting, and firearms from an early age. He started collecting firearms as a boy. Wainwright amassed a collection of over 300 pieces, with a special interest in American military arms as well as European items ranging from fine shotguns and dueling sets to matchlocks. His focus was quality over quantity, so much so that items from the collection have been on exhibit at numerous museums and displays, including the Cody Firearms Museum in Cody, Wyo. Wainwright has been an active member of the American Society of Arms Collectors for over 20 years and has provided numerous exhibits and lectures on his specialties at their meetings. charming scene of a family engaged in various activities by the Christmas tree, while Santa peers in from behind a curtain. It is entered in the sale with a $4,000-$8,000 estimate. Another endearing clockwork item is the large German wind-up Santa trade stimulator that depicts Santa in a purple hooded robe, standing in a snowy setting. When wound up, Santa’s head moves back

and forth as he pulls a jumping jack out of his toy bag, pulls the string to activate it, then drops it back into the bag. Three small children look on, two of them with motion. The estimate is $4,000-$6,000. “Not surprisingly, Dolph always favored antique ephemera, games, puzzles and sets of lithographed blocks, which all Christmas collectors are drawn to because of the wonderful late-19th- and early-20th-century artistry,” said Mackley. Among the

finest examples in the Gotelli collection are two boxed games by McLoughlin Bros., “The Visit of Santa Claus,” estimated at $2,000-$4,000, and “Aunt Louisa’s Cube Puzzles,” patented in 1884, estimated at $2,000-$3,000. An early and desirable embossed-cardboard die-cut of Santa with a bag of toys, which Mackley described as “extremely hard to find,” carries a $2,000$3,000 estimate. An impressive German witch helmet mask of painted gesso is masterfully sculpted with all of the characteristics associated with the classic Halloween character, including large, frightening eyes and a snaggle-toothed mouth. The estimate is $1,000-$2,000. There are several outstanding contemporary creations by artist Jack Roads, whose imaginative themes and imagery reinterpret traditional Halloween concepts and characters and transport them into a new realm of fantasy. Roads’ extraordinary witch standing nearly four feet tall is clothed in antique fabrics and holds a pumpkin with a built-in lever. When the
