On Saturday, Nov. 4, the annual Pulp AdventureCon will convert the Ramada Inn of Bordentown, N.J., into a pulp fiction collector’s mecca. Vendors will display for sale rare magazines, movie posters, and vintage paperbacks, and other related paper memorabilia. Pulp magazines are collected mainly for their connection to modern comic books and their cover paintings. In their heyday, characters like “The Shadow,” “Tarzan,”

and “Zorro” prospered in the pulps. Authors such as Dashiell Hammett, Raymond Chandler, Edgar Rice Burroughs, and Ray Bradbury started their careers in such old magazines, before moving into the lucrative realm of Hollywood. The pulps were inexpensive entertainment in a world before the internet and television. The pulp format appeared with Argosy in 1897 and flourished on newsstands

Antiques & Auction News — October 27, 2017 - - 3

By Shawn Surmick On Jan. 24, 2017, The New Yorker Magazine published an article titled “The Unexpectedly High-Stakes World of Neo Geo Collecting. Even as a selfdescribed hardcore vintage video game collector and enthusiast, the article took me by surprise. I am almost certain that most mainstream readers of The New Yorker have fond memories of classic, vintage video games such as “PacMan, “Donkey Kong, and “Super Mario Bros. Sadly, the Neo Geo home video game system and its games are not known by most casual enthusiasts. I was one of the few people lucky enough to own a Neo Geo video game system back when they were released in the early 1990s. The SNK Neo Geo Advanced Entertainment System, as it was called, was launched in 1990 by infamous Japanese video game maker SNK. The company was a well-known name in video game arcades everywhere, and if you ever played a classic game of “Ikari Warriors in the arcade or on any classic home video game system or computer, then you know who SNK is. The system was created as a way to bring true arcade video games into the home. It used the exact

same technology as its multivideo arcade system. This allowed any Neo Geo arcade game to be easily ported to the home system with ease. It launched on April 26, 1990, with a retail price of $649.99 and came packaged with two oversized arcade joystick controllers, a memory card that was also compatible with the company’s Neo Geo arcade cabinets, and a popular arcade game that came contained in a VHS-like-sized cartridge. Additional games retailed for about $149.99 (that price is not a typo) on up. It was the first true arcade-to-home console ever created and still ranks as one of the most expensive home video game consoles ever released when adjusted for inflation. The console would become a cult favorite throughout the years and saw heavy advertising in the first two years of its release. Unfortunately, due to the high cost of the system and its games, mass-market penetration was not an option, but the system survived due to the success and popularity of its arcade counterpart since games released for the Neo Geo arcade platform could easily be converted to the Neo Geo home system. This allowed a surprising amount of games to be released for the Neo Geo home video game system, and at last count there were almost

150 different games released for the home console alone. This is quite impressive given the fact that the user base of the system was quite limited due to its high retail price. Today, most people outside of hardcore video game collecting circles have never heard of the Neo Geo home console. This is one reason why this particular article took me by surprise. As vintage video game collecting goes mainstream, more and more enthusiasts and newly minted collectors are being introduced to more obscure video game systems of yesterday’s past. Since the mass penetration of home video games didn’t take hold until the early 1980s, a lot of unique and interesting home consoles were released in the 1980s and 1990s before Nintendo, Sony, and Microsoft created a virtual lock on the current home console market of today. Collectors have a plethora of options to choose from when collecting vintage video games, and a lot of high dollar valued items reside outside of mainstream and popular video game systems from the likes of Nintendo, Sega, and Atari. Unfortunately, modern day collectors of the Neo Geo have a lot going against them. Due to the general rarity of the system and some of its most soughtafter games, enthusiasts can

A Surprising Look At The Neo Geo Home Console

expect to spend around $500 to $1,000 just for a working Neo Geo home console. If the system is in near mint condition or better and includes the original box and packaging, expect to pay much closer to the $1,000 range (or more) just to get a system. That said, most of the popular and common to find games can be had for $100 to $300 each, with uncommon games selling for $1,000 to $3,000 each, and very rare games selling for $10,000 on up. Some of the games that sell for $10,000 on up include “Metal Slug, “Kizuna Encounter (rumored to be only released in Europe), and “Ultimate 11. For the record, and as a modest Neo Geo collector myself, I do not recommend anyone start a collection of Neo Geo games for the socalled investment aspect and high dollar value of most titles. Most of the games released for the Neo Geo home system are readily available on other home consoles and available as digital downloads on current home video game systems. Since the Neo Geo is a cult classic system with a heavy following of avid fans who grew up with the system and its influence, I do not expect the value and prices of most games to continue to rise or even hold their value for years on end. Rather, this is one system that will eventually succumb to price decreases as younger generations age and collect more mainstream systems created by Sony and Microsoft. It is nice to see publications

market in the coming years not unlike what occurred with vintage Atari and related systems. Still, those lucky enough to remember the Neo Geo home console are quite a group of passionate and hopefully wellfunded fans. More will be written about the Neo Geo and other microchip-based collectibles in future articles. Until that time, if you are lucky enough to spot a Neo Geo at a local flea market or swap meet, be sure to inquire about it as it’s well-worth owning!

Collector Anecdotes And Antics Collecting The Obscure:

like The New Yorker take a step outside the proverbial mainstream and comment on niche collectibles like the Neo Geo Advanced Entertainment System. In upcoming articles, I will take a detailed look at other obscure vintage video game systems that have a cult following. Longtime collectors of vintage video games are now experiencing a sense of extreme sticker shock as their beloved hobby goes mainstream, and more and more enthusiasts become collectors of a pixel-induced electronic past. This is causing mass-speculation in both classic and modern era video games. Extreme caution should be employed by collectors, as most of the current prices are not sustainable long-term. Collectors should expect a downturn in the

Their complex relationship amid bucolic farm life consumed Wyeth and served as the impetus behind many of his most famous works. To their children, Karl and Anna were “ordinary” people. themselves as one of the first Protestant religions. The political and religious situation in the region was regularly changing, permitting the German-speaking members to worship freely at times and subjecting them to persecution at others, but by the Reformation in 1517, the United Brethren numbered 200,000 members with more than 400 houses of worship. Within a century, turmoil would again make life in the region difficult for the United Brethren, who found themselves suffering from heightened intolerance, driven in Another piece of North Carolina part by the Thirty Years’ War Moravian redware, this Bethabara (1618-48), which would con(Salem) bowl sold at Crocker Farm in clude with Catholicism becom2017 for nearly $13,000. ing the official religion of the

This type of chair is often referred to as a “Moravian chair”; however, the simple form was common throughout Europe in the 17th through the 19th centuries. The form came to America in the 18th century and appeared in a number of Germanic communities, both Moravian and non-Moravian. The various groups collaborated on the construction of Herrnhut, a settlement where all were allowed religious freedom. The Moravians (the group had become known by the name of their native region) found favor with Zinzendorf, who felt they would make excellent missionaries with his support. In the mid-18th century, they would travel through Northern Europe, the British Isles, and even into Greenland, spreading their religious beliefs. After a time however, outside political pressure on Zinzendorf led to renewed persecution, and some of the Moravians felt that true religious liberty could only be found in the New World. Given that furniture made in the Moravian communities was not necessarily distinctive from that made in other Germanic communities, it can be difficult to attribute something to a Moravian shop without solid provenance. This early chair sold as part of the collection of Richard and Joane Smith, who focused on PennsylvaniaGerman decorative arts. In 2010, it crossed the block at Pook & Pook for $13,035.

Collectors today prize Moravian redware, which is often highly decorated. This jar attributed to Jacob Albright Jr. and Henry Loy of Alamance County, N.C., ca. 1800, sold at Crocker Farm in March of 2016 for nearly $29,000.

In the late 14th century, Jan Hus, a Roman Catholic priest in Prague who had been heavily influenced by reformer John Wycliffe, began to attract followers as he spoke out about indulgences (a key practice Martin Luther would attack again in 1517) and his belief that church members should be able, permitted, and encouraged to study the Bible themselves. Hus’ continual agitation would put him at odds with the Catholic Church, and in 1415 he was burned at the stake as a heretic. Despite this gruesome attempt at silencing them, Hus’ followers were undeterred and remained firm in their conviction that reformation was needed. It would take more than 40 years, but in 1457, they formally organized themselves as the Unitas Fratrum (United Brethren), simultaneously establishing

Pook & Pook Teams Up With Stuart Kingston Galleries For Oct. 28 Jewelry Auction

LARGE TOY AUCTION “The Collection of Walter Mowrer” Hubley - TruScale - Ertl - SpecCast - Winross - Hess 10 Display Racks - Literature - Pedal Tractor - APPROX. 700 CATALOGUED LOTS -

By Sophie Streitwieser Although names like Cartier and Van Cleef & Arpels were noticeably absent from this year’s Paris Biennale over a dispute regarding exhibition space, pieces from these highend jewelers will be showcased at the upcoming Jewelry Auction, a collaboration between Pook & Pook Inc. and Stuart Kingston Galleries, in Stuart Kingston’s new Greenville, Del., location on Saturday, Oct. 28 (featuring plenty of jewelry exhibition space). Clients can expect the same excellent service found at both Pook & Pook and Stuart Kingston and will be treated to an upscale, tax-free experience with over 150 lots of exceptional jewelry. For the animal lover, the sale will feature fearsome jewel-encrusted leopards and dragons, a whimsical frog, as well as a dog, bird, and gazelle decorated with delicate gold and vibrant gemstones. For those with classic tastes, strands of pearls, tennis bracelets, and diamond studs abound. Finally, for those who missed Cartier and Van Cleef & Arpels in Paris, consider a tricolored rolling ring from Cartier in the iconic trinity style designed by Louis Cartier and favored by the Duchess of Cambridge, or a foliageinspired pin by Van Cleef & Arpels studded with 17 diamonds and 23 sapphires. Also of note are two dazzling diamond rings, one with a brilliant round diamond weighing 2.06 carats flanked by 76 smaller

diamonds, the other with an old mine-cut cushion shape diamond weighing 4.84 carats. Pook & Pook is no stranger to jewelry, having presented several dedicated jewelry collections in the past in addition to fine and decorative arts. Stuart Kingston’s 80-year history in the jewelry business makes a harmonious match to Pook & Pook Inc., an auction house that thrives at the forefront of innovation and collaboration, helping to create Bidsquare.com, an improved and vetted online auction program. This collaboration will be yet another opportunity for both houses to continue the tradition of bringing clients a curated selection of jewelry sans sales tax, at a lower cost to buyers than found in New York or Philadelphia. For exhibition times and dates, call Stuart Kingston Galleries at 302-652-7978. The live auction will take place at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 28, at 3704 Kennett Pike, Suite 450, Greenville, Del. Interested bidders are encouraged to contact Pook & Pook Inc. at info@pookandpook.com or 610-269-4040 with questions regarding condition reports;

online, in-house, phone or absentee bidder registration; or to purchase a printed catalog. The catalog can be viewed online at www.pookandpook.com or www.bidsquare.com.

Morphy Auctions To Debut Premier Sports Memorabilia Auction On Oct. 28 These little masterpieces were the first to offer stats, facsimile autographs, and player information on the reverse. This particular set was assembled and upgraded over a decade and is fresh to the market. Now it’s time to look at some single card highlights. First things first, let’s start with two amazing rookie cards. The first is lot #455, a 1952 Topps #311 Mickey Mantle rookie card. Considered the most important post-war baseball card produced, this example has wonderful registration and color, near perfect centering, extraordinary appeal, and is estimated at $30,000-$40,000. And the second is lot #453, a 1951 Bowman #305 Willie Mays rookie card. This example, estimated at $3,000-$5,000, is well-centered and has excellent color. Two Babe Ruth cards are also the great bambino in this category. The first, lot #448, is a 1931 W517 Babe Ruth throwing card, estimated at $6,000$9,000. This recently PSA 9 graded career card is so nice, it’s hard to believe it didn’t merit a 10. And the second, lot #509, is a 1929-30 Rogers Peet #48 Babe Ruth PSA 7 NRMT highest graded card, estimated at $4,000-$6,000. According to our experts, “This is from a small recent discovery of 13 cards found in their original glassine envelopes. I would expect that another example won’t be available anytime soon.” Also hard to top in this category is lot #465, a 1956 Topps Carl Erskine. This perfect-in-everyway card is estimated at $4,000-$8,000 and has bright color, four razor-sharp corners, and is centered 50/50 all the way around. Next under consideration is this sale’s Olympic-caliber selection of sports memorabilia. Fine game-used jerseys

This baseball scene painting on canvas is estimated at $10,000-$15,000.

The 1960 Yogi Berra game-used Yankees road jersey is estimated at $20,000-$30,000.

Morphy Auctions is excited to announce its debut, fullday sports memorabilia auction to be held Saturday, Oct. 28, starting at 10 a.m. This sale launches the company’s Sports Memorabilia Division, which is headed by Tommy Sage Jr. and includes Kevin Bronson, Morphy’s sports memorabilia consultant. All lots are available for preview now in Morphy’s Denver, Pa., gallery. It’s in the cards that this premier sale will feature many of the world’s rarest and most desirable sports cards. Remarkable collections take the pole position in this category. This sale’s top offering is lot #442, a collection of 520 total T206 baseball cards minus the “big four” and estimated at $60,000-$80,000. A close second is lot #443, a nearly complete collection of 460 total T206 baseball cards, estimated at $40,000-$60,000. The T206 was issued in 1909-11 through the American Tobacco Company. It is considered the “holy grail” among many collectors. According to Morphy’s experts, “We all see T206 groups and singles available for sale, but opportunities to purchase nice complete sets are rare.” Also of World Series caliber is lot #44, a near complete collection of 219 total T205 master baseball cards, estimated at $20,000$30,000. With the huge success of the T206 baseball card set, the American Tobacco Company came back with 221 cards with stunning lithography and gold gilt borders.
