Bertoia Auctions’ Signature Sale - Considered One Of The Company’s Best Ever Set For Nov. 11 And 12 Bonus Sunday Session Will Feature Additional Selection Of Fine Holiday Antiques And Trains The toy-collecting hobby has always been a lively two-way street with sellers on one side and buyers on the other. It’s at its strongest and most energetic when the truly great collections appear at auction, as will be the case on Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 11 and 12, when Bertoia Auctions presents its Fall Signature Sale, with a bonus Sunday session of holiday antiques and trains. “Everyone who has come in to preview has commented that this is going to be one of the best sales we’ve ever had, and I would definitely agree,” said Bertoia Auctions’ owner, Jeanne Bertoia. “The quality is very high across the board, with consignments from prestigious collections in every category.” Jeanne cited several blue-chip sources, including the pressed steel and pedal car collection of the late A desirable Marklin “Battleship Sankt Georg,” 28 inches long, is estimated at $100,000-$140,000. Eugene DeGraw, mechanical banks from Texas collector/Mechanical Bank Collectors of America (MBCA) member Steve Said, and a long-held collection of Martin clockwork toys from a past Antique Toy Collectors of America (ATCA) member who tracked down elusive examples over several decades. Also, there will be trains from Jerry Greene and other veteran collectors, as well as an exceptional Christmas grouping from the same estate collection that was introduced in Bertoia’s March Signature Sale. There is so From an immense selection of Christmas rarities, here is an 18-inch-tall Belsnickle candy container with provenance including the Tom (Sr.) and Lori Sage collection, estimated at $4,000-$6,000.
The long-running Elverson Antique Show is nearing its 50th anniversary and will take place on Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 11 and 12. The show will be held at the Twin Valley High School in Elverson, Chester County, Pa. Twin Valley High School is located at 4897 N. Christmas Past and had a connoisseur’s eye,” stated Jeanne. “Probably half of the items are so outstanding, even the most advanced Christmas collector would want to acquire them.” In the Saturday session, there are 10 Santas that measure 24 inches in height or taller. “If even one Santa of that type appears in an auction, that’s impressive, but ten is unheard of,” said Bertoia. Also featured are Belsnickles, large Father Christmas figures, a sizable Krampus, chalk Santas, and Heubach figures of children on skis, holding snowballs, etc. The cast-iron section includes both automotive and horse-drawn toys. Among the Hubley highlights are a Royal Circus Giraffe wagon, a Hill Climber motorcycle, and a skyblue “Say It With Flowers” motorcycle delivery van. Early Kenton autos will be ready to take a spin, as well. A small offering of 1880s bell and pull toys includes a boxed, nearmint J. & E. Stevens “Landing of Columbus” bell toy, plus several examples by Ives. Continued on page 2

Collectors can choose from nearly 100 pristine mechanical banks from the Steve Said collection. “MBCA members visited Steve’s collection during a past convention, so his banks are well known to them,” noted Bertoia’s auctioneer Michael Bertoia. They include a freshto-market “Lion Hunter,” a top-condition “Punch and Judy,” an “Afghanistan” bank in supreme condition, and a stellar “Boy Scout Camp.” Rare and desirable tin banks include a “Mickey Mouse” vending bank and a boxed “Magie.” An influential collector and authority on the subject, Jeanne personally curates each and every doorstop offered in her company’s sales. The Nov. 11 session includes one of her favorites, a handsome Bradley & Hubbard

The rare, most elaborate version of Marklin’s “Churchbury Station” with ramps, first appearance at auction, consigned by original owner’s family, is estimated at $18,000-$22,000.

An anticipated scenestealer, a circa-1910 deluxe version of Marklin’s “English Churchbury Station” in 100 percent original condition, came to Bertoia’s from the original owner’s family in India. wind-ups amassed by a New York collector, ATCA member and world traveler. “His focus was always on condition and rarity. These Martin clockwork toys are untouched, pristine examples, and there are several that we’ve never even seen before, except in books,” said Jeanne. They include a boxed “Khaki Guard,” a “Cakewalk,” and an “Acrobatic Gymnast” that would be familiar only to those who have visited a Paris museum where a similar example is on display. Complementing the Martins are several Lehmann toys, such as a boxed “Halloh” motorcycle (ex. Donald Kaufman) and a “Baker & Sweep.” Early Steiff productions are highlighted by two lots in particular, both made of velvet. One is a set of three velvet bunnies, while the other is a full set of Steiff animal-form skittles. While the top-tier Christmas antiques and trains will be presented during the Saturday Signature Sale, there will be much more in the bonus Sunday session: 300 holiday lots and 150 train lots. “Everything reserved for Sunday has great eye appeal at a lower price point. In the Christmas and holiday category, there are numerous diecuts and flat paper items, including sought-after Rafael Tuck productions,” said Jeanne. In addition to paper, the Christmas selection features Santas in sleighs, some pulled by reindeer: glass and other tree ornaments; candy containers; later Santas; and

“Gil Schafer is one of the founders of a huge movement, nationally and globally, to honor the elements of classical architecture,” said J. Thomas Savage, Winterthur director of museum affairs. “When he was studying at the Yale School of Architecture, there was no training on the proportions and principles of classical architecture. To address this void, Gil and others recognized the need to form an organization to teach what was no longer taught in universities.” From 1999 to 2006, he served as the president and then chairman of the Institute of Classical Architecture and Art, the nation’s leading resource for the classical tradition in

I continue to believe that the best way to build future collectors is to start them when they are little. Actually, I think that is a pretty critical parenting skill in general. But in terms of building collectors for the future, I suggest two ideas. First is that kids need to grow up in a casual and relaxed way with antiques and collections. I have seen so many parents or grandparents who exclude their families from their collections. Recently, I saw a collection unceremoniously dumped on the market because the family had no connections to the pieces. The family saw it only as an asset to be eliminated. Second is that children need to understand that collecting can be fun. Again, I have seen collectors who treat their hobby like a personal obsession. They focus upon

their collection to the exclusion of their family. They then complain that the next generation does not like to collect. I tend to think that collecting is as much nature as nurture, so why a second generation does not collect may be more about the actions of the first. I truly encourage families to start collecting together. My oldest daughter has collected her entire life. She started with Wades and then progressed onto Mexican folk art and trains. My youngest, Mary, is now collecting Wades and is interested in Peanuts memorabilia from the 1970s. When we go to the flea markets, the girls have their interests and wants. They also get to furnish their rooms with any antique that they want in the house. Both have their own tastes. Jane likes Moderne furnishings, while Mary just talked me into a Victorian armchair for her bedroom. I have been told several times that my children are old souls. Whether you believe in such things, I will say that both daughters have interesting tastes that belie their years. Collecting is a family affair, and I have generally found most antique shops to be supportive of families that

Mary, in particular, is very mindful of how expensive things can be. So start them young and keep them engaged in our hobby.

The swivel chair upon which the model sits can be seen in a photograph of Chase standing in his famous Tenth Street Studio in New York, which was reproduced in a 1947 article about the famed studio building in The Villager. “Interior” (est. $80,000$120,000) by Louis Ritman is emblematic of the artist’s unique brand of American Impressionism, painted while the artist lived and worked in Giverny, France. “Interior” has descended in the same family for more than 100 years and was last seen publically in 1912 at the Cincinnati Museum’s “19th Annual Exhibition of American Art.” Other highlights of the auction include “Absaroke Trail,” 1993, by Howard Terpning (est. $60,000$80,000) and “Third Avenue El,” circa 1933, by Francis Criss (est. $30,000-$50,000). Recently returned to a family after it was stolen more than 40 years ago, Norman Rockwell’s endearing “Lazybones (Boy Asleep With Hoe),” also known as “Taking a Break,” is expected to sell for more than $1 million in Heritage Auctions’ Friday, Nov. 3, American Art Auction in Dallas, Texas. The 1919 Saturday Evening Post cover makes its auction debut, highlighting an exceptional array of Golden Age illustration. Purchased for less than $100 in 1954 and stolen in June of 1976, Rockwell’s painting stands as one of the artist’s first Saturday Evening Post covers, produced in 1919 when he was 25. “Lazybones” illustrates not simply the classic Rockwell subject of childhood, but the quintessential American prankster-adventurer, Huck Finn. With his straw hat and bandana, work shirt, and tattered pants with suspenders, Rockwell’s character comes straight out of the pages of Mark Twain’s celebrated novel. Not least, the painting has its own wild backstory, ripped from the headlines, as it was taken from Robert and Teresa Grant’s house in New Jersey during a well-planned burglary. With the help of FBI special agents, the painting was recovered and returned to the family in March of this year. “The provenance of this masterwork is as remarkable as the painting itself,” said Aviva Lehmann, director of American art at Heritage Auctions. “We are thrilled to bring this classic Rockwell to auction and find its new home.” Heritage is also pleased to present “The Golden Age: Property From a Distinguished New York Collection.” Comprised of 43 works spanning the Golden Age of Illustration, the single-owner collection embodies an era of unprecedented excellence in magazine and book illustration. The artists of this period captured the nostalgia of

18th-Century Pipe Tops A Spirited Cowan’s American Indian And Western Art Auction An extraordinary 18thcentury eastern woodlands pipe previously owned by well-known collector Clem Caldwell was the top lot of a busy day at Cowan’s Auction on Sept. 23. The pipe, which sold for $132,000 (prices reported include a 20 percent buyer’s premium), was one of many bidding wars on the day that spurred Cowan’s Fall American Indian and Western Art auction to a $1.25 million total. “The eastern woodlands pipe exceeded its high estimate, but even at this price, our buyer got a great deal,” said Danica Farnand, Cowan’s director of American Indian Art. “Pipes from this era and this region are incredibly rare, but pipes with this level of craftsmanship quite simply don’t ever come to market. Over 300 years after it was originally carved, you can still make out carved tattoo markings, and his glass imitation wampum bead belt is still intact. It’s a stunning piece.”

Bidding started at $40,000 as four phone bidders from around the country battled two floor bidders for several minutes before the hammer finally fell at $110,000. For the second time in 2017, the prehistoric art from Jan W. Sorgenfrei was the most coveted collection of the day. Although Sorgenfrei collected a wide variety of prehistoric artifacts, he was especially partial to birdstones and had assembled arguably the world’s finest collection at the time of his

Bidders were extended, the pipe somehow eager to get their hands on pieces from the collection, with many driving across the Midwest to come bid in person. Cowan’s salesroom is in Cincinnati, Ohio. Part II of the collection sold for $221,160. There were 52 lots. “The Sorgenfrei Collection is unparalleled,” said Farnand. “It’s not only a fairly diverse grouping of prehistoric art, but it’s also extremely well curated. All of the pieces were carefully chosen as outstanding examples of their medium. It’s no wonder demand has been so overwhelming.” A 19th-century Navajo classic serape The top lot from the colwith a white field, 81-by-58 inches, ca. lection was an elongated slate 1860, sold for $54,000. birdstone that sold for $32,400. followed by an Eastern Plains tacked ball club from the collection of Marvin Lince, which sold for $25,200. As always, beadwork was a hot category throughout the day, with the top lot being a Blackfoot beaded hide war shirt, collected by John M. Phillips (1861-1953), that sold for $54,000. Other highlights in the category include a Sioux beaded buffalo hide cradle that sold for $14,400, a Metis quilled hide frock coat for $13,800, and a Sioux beaded infant dress for $6,000. It was also a good day for pottery, especially works by well-known artists. The top pottery lot of the day was a Trinidad Medina (Zia,

for $19,200; and two elongated slate long neck birdstone, one for $17,400, and the other for $16,800. Two exceptional examples of Navajo weaving marked another high point in the auction. Coming in as the second highest hammer price of the day, a 19th-century Navajo classic serape with a white field sold for $54,000. In addition to its excellent condition, what made this particular blanket so desirable is its unusual field. While the vast majority of Navajo serapes have a red field, this piece’s white field is relatively rare, especially for blankets from the 19th century. Immediately preceding the serape was a Navajo third phase chief’s blanket once belonging to Don Bennett, founder of what is today known as the Whitehawk Antique Indian Show. The blanket, which dated ca. 1860, sold for $36,000. Two war clubs topped $20,000 in the auction. The first was a mid-19th century Delaware gunstock club crafted from maple and decorated with arched and triangular elements carved in bands amid stars and brass tacks that sold for $32,400. This was

What Is Repousse Silver?
ALL DAY
PUBLIC AUCTION
“What’s It Worth” Antique Minute By Mike Ivankovich What exactly is repousse silver? Even having been an auctioneer and appraiser for 25-plus years, an antiques dealer for 35-plus years, I know it when I see it; however, if asked to define it, I would probably draw a blank. Repousse silver is sterling silver (or other metal) that has a raised or relief design hammered in from the backside of the piece. Sometimes the back displays the hammered design, other times the
hammered design has been filled in and is solid. There are various repousse silver designs, including flowers, shells, faces, animals, etc. And there are various repousse makers as well. But, the defining fact is that repousse silver has an elaborate and attractive 3-D feel when using it. If you like the look, expect to pay a premium price, as repousse is quite popular with silver collectors and users today. What’s it worth? Recently, a sterling silver repousse
flatware set (84 pieces), having a scrap silver value of approximately $1,000, sold for $3,800 at a local auction. The owners obviously made the right decision when they consigned it to auction versus selling to a “We Buy Gold” store for scrap value. Two small sculptures, an ancient Egyptian faience hippopotamus and an inspired 20th-century American glazed earthenware work, have been juxtaposed at The Metropolitan Museum of Art in the small installation “Conversation between Two Hippos,” on view through April 1, 2018, in the Lila Acheson Wallace Galleries of Egyptian Art (Gallery 107). The display celebrates the 100th anniversary of the museum’s acquisition of the faience hippo. Nicknamed “William,” the sculpture is the unofficial mascot of The Met. In conjunction with the anniversary, new content about the sculpture will be added to the museum’s website this fall, and diverse events for museum visitors have been organized for the weekend of Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, Nov. 17, 18, and 19. Created in the Middle Kingdom (Dynasty 12, reign of Senwosret I-Senwosret II, ca. 1961-1878 B.C.) and excavated in 1910, the exhibition’s ancient Egyptian faience hippopotamus was acquired by The Met in 1917. The origin of its nickname can be traced to a 1931 story in the British humor and satire magazine Punch about a family that consults a color print of The Met’s hippo, which it calls “William,” as an oracle. Subsequently, the story was reprinted in The Metropolitan Museum of Art Bulletin. Hippopotamus figurines were popular in Egypt’s Middle Kingdom, when they were deposited in tombs to supply the deceased with regenerative powers. The

AB 228 Unanimously Approved By California State Legislature
Action Calendar
New Measure Awaits Governor’s Signature
11/17-18/17, EPHRATA, FRI 5 PM SAT 9 AM, Contemporary folk art, primitives, early china & glassware, folk art, pottery, toys, textiles, music boxes lamps, period & antique country furniture, Horst Auction Center 50 Durlach Rd, Horst Auction
The California State Legislature has unanimously approved AB 228, a measure that corrects the problems created by provisions in AB 1570 (Chang) (Ch. 258, Stat. 2016), Signed Memorabilia. AB 228 is authored by assembly member Todd Gloria and Sen. Galgiani. The measure is now with Gov. Jerry Brown, awaiting his decision. Brown can either sign the measure, let the bill become law without his signature, or veto the measure. Last year, the California State Legislature approved, and the governor signed into law, AB 1570 (Chang), enacting new provisions in Section 1739.7 of the California Civil Code, effective Jan. 1, 2017. The amendments were intended to rigorously govern the sale of “autographed” sports and
entertainment memorabilia by requiring dealers who advertise and sell any item bearing a signature to provide a certificate of authenticity to the purchaser. The new regulation also requires various onerous practices and procedures relating to record maintenance and disclosures of the identity of consignors of such “autographed” items, the latter of which raises privacy and confidentiality concerns. Severe civil penalties (up to 10 times actual damages, or more, plus legal fees and costs to a successful claimant) could apply to anyone violating the current statute. The language of AB 1570 severely impacts entities that are not or are only minimally engaged in the sale of sports and entertainment memorabilia and that were and are not
the intended focus of the statute, thereby unintentionally hindering commercial activity in the state of California. The breadth and vagueness posed by AB 1570 is what compels the enactment of AB 228. AB 228 corrects last year’s enacted statute by: • Revising the definitions of “Collectibles” so as to more clearly target “Sports and Entertainment” collectibles and excluding items like signed works of fine art, furniture, decorative objects, jewelry, books and manuscripts, and numismatic items or bullion, not intended by the author of AB 1570 to be included within the statute’s reach. • Addressing the privacy and confidentiality issues created by AB 1570 by striking the provisions that
require the disclosure of the name and address of consignors of goods and instead requires the dealer to retain records of the name and address of the third party for a period of seven years, during which a consumer may seek such records pursuant to a subpoena or judicial order. • Declaring the intent of the Legislature that nothing in AB 228 shall be construed to affect the decision of the Court of Appeal in Gentry v. eBay Inc. (2002) 99 Cal.App.4th Michaan’s in Alameda, Calif., offered this 816; excluding providers century-old Tiffany Studios Laburnum table or operators of an online lamp in a Nov. 17, 2012, auction with a marketplace. $500,000-$600,000 estimate. Had the lamp • Declaring that it is to come to Michaan’s during the timeframe in take effect immediately as which the current legislation (AB 1570) was an urgency statute. in effect, it would have been unlawful to sell Those interested in it within the state of California, as there urging Brown to sign the would have been no way to produce a doc- measure should send an ument from an eyewitness to the actual email to his legislative secapplication of the Tiffany Studios signature retary, Camille Wagner, at tag.
