Parts two and three of the collection will be offered in subsequent auctions in 2020. From his home in Dayton, Ohio, Spangler became aware of the various forms and colors of Midwestern glass blown at the early Ohio glass houses near where he lived. He attended most of the bottle shows in the area and also Pennsylvania from the late 1960s to the early ’80s, including the famous Guernsey Barn show in Pennsylvania. On Thursday, Nov. 14, Phillips will offer Norman Rockwell’s “Before the Shot,” marking the first time that a work by the iconic American illustrator will appear in a Phillips’ evening sale of 20th century and contemporary art. The painting has never before been sold publicly, having remained in just two families’ collections since the work was done, the first of which was Rockwell’s own doctor, and the model for the painting. “We are honored to introduce Norman Rockwell’s paintings to Phillips’ auctions by including this masterwork in our November Evening Sale. While Rockwell has traditionally been offered in sales of American Art, we are eager to break down the barriers that separate these collecting categories and reexamine the way that these different voices of the 20th century are classified. ‘Before the Shot’ is one of the most recognizable paintings by one of America’s most iconic artists. This November, Rockwell’s name will be rightfully positioned alongside other international 20th and 21st century masters, including Joan Miró, Pablo Picasso, Andy Warhol, Joan Mitchell, and Jean-Michel Basquiat,” said Elizabeth Goldberg, senior international specialist of American art and deputy chairwoman, Americas. “Before the Shot” is a nostalgic and humorous reflection of American culture in the 1950s, elevating the commonplace to the remarkable. Nearly identical to the version gracing the cover of the March 15, 1958, issue of “The Saturday Evening Post,” the picture depicts a child standing on a wooden chair in a doctor’s office, awaiting an impending shot and uneasily inspecting the diplomas on the wall as the physician prepares a syringe.
While “Before the Shot” betrays a sense of chance encounter, it was actually a picture of much consideration for Rockwell. Typical of his working process for his most important paintings, Rockwell painted “Before the Shot” from a series of photographs that he directed as scrupulously as one The reference photo for “Before the Shot,” 1958, would a film shoot. courtesy of the Norman Rockwell Museum The source images collection, photo by Clemens Kalischer. were taken inside Dr. Donald Campbell’s office in Stockbridge, Mass., Rockwell’s home from 1953 until his death in 1978. much some people are willing to pay to get their hands on some of these bags. There are now Birkin bags selling for six figures and above, making them one of the most expensive secondary markets for a luxury product. Even vintage Rolex watches generally fail to bring the high prices that are being paid for Hermes Birkin handbags. It would be fair to give Hermes credit for actually creating a manufactured scarce product that warrants a high secondary market price. Unlike other manufacturers, the company was able to keep supply low enough and demand high enough that a justifiable secondary market for these products could be established. Who knew that in the 1980s we all should have been speculating on Hermes Birkin bags at their original retail price of $2,000 per bag as opposed to all those cases of sports cards and comic books that will soon be occupying your local landfill? Until next time, happy collecting, and if you happen to find a Hermes Birkin bag at a flea market, make sure it is real! Shawn Surmick has been an avid collector since the age of 12. He currently resides in his hometown of Boyertown, Pa., and is a passionate collector of antiques and collectibles. His articles focus on various topics affecting the marketplace.

Manufactured scarcity in the collectibles marketplace is nothing new: the massproduced limited-edition holo-foil comic book, the Funko Pop figure produced in so-called limited quantities, and even the collector’s edition video game. The market for manufactured scarcity in the collectibles marketplace is so pronounced that even the makers of “Magic: The Gathering” game cards have started to produce limitededition collector sets that sell for a premium on both the primary and secondary marketplaces. Even toy makers are not immune to this growing trend. Hasbro, the popular owner of toy titans like “G.I. Joe” and “Transformers” (and, ironically, “Magic: The Gathering”), unveiled HasLab several years ago. HasLab brings to life extraordinary toys and action figures with a high price tag direct to the limited collectors’ market. Its most recent entry was a massive action figure toy that could easily meet the definition of a deluxe play set. Based on the popular “Transformer Unicron” character, the $574.99 toy is pretty much sold out on the primary market, and speculators are betting big that the price will further escalate as demand increases for the limited-edition toy on the secondary market. I discussed the mass market mania of speculators and overpriced collectibles in the past, and the trend hasn’t changed. Unfortunately, speculators have yet to learn their lessons. That will come in time when the demand for these items fades, and these same
Due to the number of wellknown celebrities and business titans who are all clamoring to get their hands on them, the company used to take orders that would be filled on a first-come, firstserved basis (assuming you actually believe that they are not playing favorites to who they want to own their luxury handbags). Today, however, that has changed. Now the company takes what it calls “wish lists.” This means that regardless as to whether or not you can afford the handbag, the company has the ultimate say as to whether or not, and when, your order will be fulfilled. If ever! The bags are handcrafted even to this very day and take each artisan 48 full hours to make the most basic version. The most sought-after designs are ones that are quite scarce overall and include bright colors or unique designs. As a result of Hermes’ delicate handling of the supply of Birkin handbags on the market, two developments have taken place: the first being the rise of counterfeits and counterfeit makers coming out of China and, more troubling, instances in which some Hermes employees have been identified in helping to assist counterfeiters in perfecting their craft. A lot of counterfeit Birkin bags are now being produced in France and Italy, and some of these counterfeits are very convincing. Unethical counterfeiters can make a sizeable sum just on the profits from making one counterfeit bag. A second development of the scarcity of Hermes Birkin bags is the sizeable sum being paid for these items on the secondary market. A simple search of completed auctions through the Heritage Auctions site will tell you just how

starry-eyed speculators attempt to sell items back on the secondary market when most collectors have already moved on to the next big thing. That said, there is one manufactured collectible that seems to be defying the odds and maintaining value on the secondary market despite the attempts of the manufacturer to limit availability and increase scarcity. Let’s take a look at what sets this particular item apart from all the others. In the early 1980s, the CEO of Hermes, a French high-end luxury fashion goods manufacturer, was on a flight in which he ended up sitting near British actress Jane Birkin. As the story goes, the actress’s handbag contents spilled out sometime during their initial conversation, and this caused them both to come up with a better designed handbag, one that would be specially made to cater to wealthier consumers and one that would be much more practical than what was already on the market. The result was the Hermes Birkin bag that was created in 1984. Ironically, the Birkin Bag, which was a high-end luxury handbag, sold poorly at first, even though it’s original price at that time was $2,000, which was considered low compared to the company’s other offerings at the time. However, as the 1990s drew near, more and more celebrities were clamoring for high-end luxury goods, and one of the most popular fashion accessories at this time was women’s luxury handbags. Celebrities began posing with their Birkin handbags in photo after photo. Victoria Beckham, Kim Kardashian, and even my own celebrity crush, Hilary Duff, have all been seen posing with Birkin bags at some point. This caused interest and their price to rise dramatically. To ensure demand could be met on these highend luxury bags and to ensure they would always be considered scarce, Hermes did what any luxury goods manufacturer would do—raise the price, and cut supply. Today, the average starting price of an Hermes Birkin bag is over $9,500, and even if you have the money, you are not guaranteed to get one.

He would sit in the kitchen area with his buddies, watching the sale through a large window. Whenever he wanted to place a bid, he would knock on the window.” The estate collection shows significant diversity, but at its core is European turn-of-thecentury tin, particularly large boats. The auction includes 35 European boats, including a Marklin Battleship Maine and Marklin Battleship La Plata, made for the Argentine market and formerly part of the Bill Bertoia collection. Various other brands are seen in this grouping, which includes submarines, speedboats and other craft. The European automotive toys run the gamut from limos and runabouts to racers and fire pumpers. Also, there are several early German and French push planes and a large Marklin zeppelin. His prized American train sub-collection features twoinch Carlisle & Finch trains with endless track, multiple accessories and boxes, as well as Voltamp and Howard accessories. Daniel Hopfer’s (German, 1471–1536) “Death and the Devil Surprising two Women,” ca. 1500–10, is an etching, first sheet of two, courtesy of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, the Elisha Whittelsey Collection, the Elisha Whittelsey Fund, 1951 (51.501.383). dissemination of information between artists and their individual desire to embrace etching in creative ways, from Dürer’s dense networks of lines in Germany to Parmigianino’s use of colored inks in Italy; each artist tried to make the medium distinctive and unique.” Etching is an intaglio printmaking technique in which lines or areas on a metal plate are incised with acid in order to hold ink; the image on the plate is then printed onto paper. Artists today etch prints much the way they did in the early 16th century. In essence, the technique is equivalent to drawing on the surface of a printing plate. As a result, etching has an ease that opened the door for all kinds of artists to make prints. Among the pioneers of the medium are some of the greatest painters of the Renaissance, including Albrecht Dürer, Francesco Parmigianino, and Pieter Bruegel the Elder. The Met’s exhibition will begin at the end of the 15th century with the origins of etching in the workshop of the German printmaker and armor decorator Daniel Hopfer and then move on to explore the ways in which a range of artists from Germany, Flanders, Italy, and France began to experiment

The emergence of etching on paper in Europe in the late 15th and early 16th centuries, when the technique moved out of the workshops of armor decorators and into those of printmakers and painters, was a pivotal moment that completely changed the course of printmaking. “The Renaissance of Etching” will trace the first 70 years of the etched print through some 125 etchings created by both renowned and lesser-known artists, displayed alongside a selection of drawings, printing plates, etching tools, illustrated books, and armor. The works are drawn from the collections of The Met, The Albertina Museum, and a number of European and American lenders. It will run at The Met Fifth Avenue in Galleries 691-693 until Jan. 20, 2020, and was made possible by the Diane W. and James E. Burke Fund, the Placido Arango Fund, The Schiff Foundation, and Ann and Matthew Nimetz. It is organized by The Metropolitan Museum of Art and The Albertina Museum. The catalogue is made possible by the Drue E. Heinz Fund. Additional support is provided by the Tavolozza Foundation. “When etching on paper was first introduced, the ease and access of the technique enabled artists to expand the reach of their work and exchange ideas and images in a new way,” said Max Hollein, director of The Met. “This exhibition will offer a fascinating examination of this trailblazing moment and an opportunity to appreciate a time in which the sharing of images, something we are so clearly immersed in today, underwent a revolutionary technical advancement.” “By focusing on the 70-year period right at the onset of this groundbreaking technology, we are able to observe artists at a time of great experimentation and creativity,” added Nadine Orenstein, Drue Heinz chair of drawings and prints at The Met. “The exhibition will show the
