Americana Meets Fantasy In Cordier’s Fall Fine And Decorative Arts Auction Two-Day Catalog Sale Slated For Nov. 10 And 11 By Amelia Rundle Three ships are tossed on choppy waves, the American flags rippling out from each one’s prow in the fierce easterly wind. Behind them, a lighthouse stands as the marker between safety and adventure, a nod to the Massachusetts landscape that master clockmaker Simon Willard called home. The ships, perpetually heading out to sea, decorate the arch of a tall-case clock by Willard that Cordier Auctions will be selling in its Fall Fine and Decorative Arts Auction. The This is a Towle Lady Mary flatware set. painted automaton increases the rarity of this clock, itself one of only 1,200 manufactured by Willard. Cordier expects that the clock will bring between $8,000 and $12,000 in the auction, which will be held Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 10 and 11, in Harrisburg, Pa. Along with the clock, other pieces of American history will be crossing the block, including an early Pennsylvania Windsor settee, possibly made in Harrisburg. A 19th-century needlepoint sampler, a 1900 Koken oak and leather barber chair, and a mid-18th-century Queen Anne tiger maple highboy will also highlight this sale. Over the course of two days, the auction will span categories from antique furniture to fine jewelry and sterling silver. Wiener started his career in silver, but his later gold pieces were considered by critics as a move “from craft into art,” as his New York Times obituary puts it. A truly striking Towle sterling flatware set in the Lady Mary pattern, containing nearly 250 pieces of sterling and sterling-handled utensils and serving pieces in a massive storage case, is also among the anticipated lots. Woven throughout the auction are threads of fantasy and wonder inspired by artists like Mathurin Moreau, whose mythology-derived works grace numerous noble courtyards in France. A bronze sculpture after his work, depicting a woman and a fairy, lends an air of otherworldliness to this auction, which This is a period tiger maple highboy. Continued on page 2

Frederic Edwin Church, a central figure in a group of artists known as the Hudson River School, became internationally renowned as a painter of monumental landscapes. The spectacular panoramas he painted in the 1840s through 1890s helped shape not only the cultural identity of the United States, but also of himself when he applied his vision as an artist to the house and 250-acre landscape that he named Olana, known today as Olana State Historic Site, a National Historic Landmark. Olana is located just outside of Hudson, N.Y., in the heart of the Hudson River Valley. It is the masterwork of his career and stands as the most intact artist-designed environment in the country. Olana’s designed landscape has been sensitively restored over the last 10 years and can now be experienced by visitors very much as Church and his family experienced it in the 19th century, including the breathtaking vistas over the Hudson River Valley region that first drew the artist to this dramatic setting. The new book “Frederic

“What’s It Worth” Antique Minute The term “brown furniture” is often described as “grandmother’s antique furniture.” “Brown is down” has been the mantra for the past decade in this post 2008-09 market. The interest has slowed to a trickle among multiple generations, notably the young, and as an increasing amount of brown furniture has been sold by my generation, value has plummeted like a rock in water. But there have been signs that this decline may be bottoming out, which means that, if you like it, today may be the best time to buy “brown furniture” in the past half-century. Here are 10 reasons you may want to consider buying opportunities in “brown” today. 1. It’s cheap and often affordable. 2. It’s durable and will last nearly forever.

6. Most of the styles have withstood the test of time and have appealed to people for generations. 7. If you must, you can re-purpose it. Older wardrobes can be converted to entertainment centers, and newer entertainment centers can be converted to cabinets or other storage. 8. Formal dining rooms may presently be a thing of the past, but people will always need a bedroom set. 9. Most brown furniture is undervalued today, and the best-of-the-best is totally undervalued, leaving room for resale profit at some future point.

One such item was a women’s suffrage slogan cup currently on display at the National Museum of American History at the Smithsonian. Many examples pictured in Ted Hake’s “Encyclopedia of Political Buttons” were from the Broyles’ collection. Other contributions were select pieces of John Bell pottery that were donated to the Renfrew Museum in Waynesboro, Pa., which houses the largest and most significant Bell pottery collection. Among some of the more unique items in the onlineonly auction are two Roullet et Decamps automaton toys, a 1860 Whig Party Bell/Everett campaign plush

Kenton and Audrey also supported the construction of the Bryce Jordan Center at University Park and most recently were one of two donors for the Lori and Russ Rose Women’s volleyball complex, also at University Park. The Broyles were known for their collections of both antiques and rare political memorabilia. With his lifelong fascination with American history, Kenton began collecting political campaign memorabilia, such as buttons, posters, bandanas, canes, lanterns, snuff boxes, and china, among other items, six decades ago. He amassed among the largest private collections of political memorabilia in the country.

10. In my opinion, value will eventually return. The temporary appeal of Mid-Century Modern can’t last forever, so what comes after that? We’ll very likely revert back to the traditional styles. If you prefer low quality Ikea furniture, then brown furniture may never be right for you. But, if it appeals to you, and if you’re seeking longterm value, then go to an auction, multi-dealer co-op, show, or tag sale, and buy something that has personality and will last a lifetime—for very little money. What’s it worth? Recently at a very reputable auction house, we saw a Pennsylvania House cherry dining room set, with extension table, eight chairs, hutch, and sideboard, in immaculate condition, sell for a total of $325. After commissions and delivery expense, the consignor netted less than $200. A shame for the seller; a true bargain for the buyer.

1990s or later. These games will at least hold their value longer than anything coming out of the 1980s and early 90s. 4. Use caution when collecting obscure video game systems. You may seem to think that lesser-known systems like the TurboGrafx-16 and Sega Saturn will continue to accrue a lot of value on the secondary market, but that’s an illusion. Right now, they are hot on the secondary market, but eventually their values will stagnate and even reverse. The generation that recognizes this subset of collecting is getting older, and within 10 to 20 years this market is poised for a massive correction. Sega is going to start releasing a bevvy of its classic game catalog on newer consoles, as this strategy makes the most financial sense for the struggling video game publisher. The TurboGrafx-16 isn’t going to be making a comeback any time soon, but that also means that most of its games are going to eventually fade into obscurity and join the ranks of the Magnavox Odyssey and the Vectrex. 3. Vintage video game advertising is highly collectible. Truth be told, from strictly a financial standpoint, you are probably much better off accumulating original vintage video game advertising than the actual games! Most of the early advertising from the original Nintendo era (think

I get requests to comment on certain aspects of the collectibles trade from readers and also from those who know me personally within the trade. One such request is to do an article on my top tips for collecting home video games. I have received a lot of positive praise on the “Collecting the Obscure” series of articles that deals with the history of relatively unknown vintage video game systems that now have value on the secondary market. Ironically, I actually write those to assist casual readers who may be lucky enough to discover that they have a semivaluable collectible sitting in their home. It was never meant to be a series for hardcore vintage video game collectors, but I am certainly glad that I seem to have found a following from that demographic as well. That said, before I delve into my top tips for collecting home video games, it is imperative that I offer the following words of wisdom to the wouldbe collector. I do not advise anyone to collect vintage video games for financial investment. Unfortunately, that ship sailed long ago, and buying at today’s prices means that you are buying at the top of the market. No other generation will ever value your old video games from the 1980s and 1990s more than today’s collectors, because they are the generation that grew up with them. Another factor affecting the value of vintage video games is the topic of previously released games appearing on newer consoles. The Sony Playstation 4, the Xbox One, and the Nintendo Switch have seen and continue to see a glut of games that were originally released yesteryear. I can assure you that this trend will

continue, and, make no mistake, more than 90 percent of the games released for these consoles will never be worth more than their original retail price. Video games are not and never were a valid investment. Collect and enjoy video games simply because you like the nostalgia and entertainment they provide. With that caveat in mind, we can now continue on with my top tips for collecting home video games. 5. The trend is your friend. The Nintendo era is where it’s at! I’m sorry, but virtually no one cares about pre-Nintendo video games from a collecting standpoint anymore. In the late 1990s and early 2000s, Atari and related home video games from the late 1970s and the early 1980s were all the rage. Prices were soaring, and savvy dealers entered the market en masse. By 2005, prices were quickly falling and Nintendo would become king due to changing demographics and the fact that everyone who had a vintage Atari-era video game system was looking to cash in on the trend. Fast forward to today and even rare Nintendo games from the glory days of the eight-bit era are stagnating in price. Now the trend is hitting more obscure games and systems from around this same era, with later Nintendo consoles like the Nintendo 64 and Nintendo GameCube coming into vogue. If you are going to collect, start collecting games from the

1985 to 1992) was not hoarded and can be quite hard to find today. Plus, what video game enthusiasts wouldn’t want to decorate their home video game rooms with classic advertising from the most coveted era of video gaming? Unlike the games that are being rereleased, authentic vintage video game advertising has an element of nostalgia not unlike vintage Coca-Cola advertising. This is one aspect of the market that is starting to catch fire and as previously stated, the trend is always your friend. Just be sure to only go after original authentic pieces and avoid the massive quantity of fakes and fantasy pieces that clutter the market. 2. Use caution when collecting modern-era video game systems. Yes, the Sony Playstation 4, the Xbox One, and the Nintendo Switch have their fair share of soon-to-be classics. Unfortunately, most of these games will be released over and over again on newer and more powerful systems now that video game publishers know that gamers will always clamor for yesteryear’s games. Expect this trend to continue for decades to come. Just know these games will never be as valuable as the classic cartridge-based games you remember. Too many are being hoarded as speculators incorrectly assume this market is sustainable. 1. Be cautious of limited physical releases of digital games. Limited Run Games is a great company, and it deserves

wanted to hear. However, the massive amount of speculation in the vintage and modern home video game market is staggering. I recently sold off most of my vintage video game collections, and, judging from the prices being paid for some of the items I sold, I have no regrets. Be very careful when speculating in this market and simply buy and own the games you want to play for years to come.

its success. However, thinking that because these games are limited in physical form they will become sought-after valuable collectibles is completely incorrect. Yes, very few will be, but since their releases are based off of games already available via digital download, don’t assume a legitimate secondary market will materialize. Today, the company is turning out so many releases a month that even I have trouble keeping up. Buy these games because you want to own and cherish them. Speculation in this area is going to cause a lot of disappointment. I am almost certain that my top tips for collecting home video games are not what many video game enthusiasts

There were 233 registered bidders in attendance. The following items are among the highlights sold. An Abner Zook 3-D painting/diorama depicting the square in Lancaster city sold for $18,000. Abner (1921-2010) and Aaron (19212003) Zook were Amish identical twins who both created elaborate 3-D artwork, the majority of which depicted rural Amish culture. A primitive Hattie Brunner winter scene watercolor painting realized $5,300, and a summer scene, $4,400. Brunner (1890-1982) of Reinholds in northern Lancaster County was a legendary antiques dealer, whose shop titled the Tulip Shop supplied regional Pennsylvania antiques for decades. and came to Morphy’s with not only family documentation, but also exhibition loan documents. Against an estimate of $40,000-$60,000, the duo realized $90,000. Also, O’Connor’s collection included a pair of fine 1760 Bailes (English) silver-mounted flintlock pistols that originally belonged to Archibald Montgomerie (1726-96), a Scottish earl, general, member of Parliament and head of Clan Montgomerie who served in the French and Indian War. Steeped in history, the pair of pistols rose to $55,575 against an estimate of $15,000-$40,000. Walter O’Connor’s peerless knowledge of engraved powder horns was well-known

within the field, and his collection housed many outstanding examples. Three of his exceptional powder horns achieved identical auction prices, each selling for $84,000. They included a rare horn polychromeengraved with a view of Charlestown, S.C., and Fort Johnston; a 1759 horn originally belonging to Elijah Sharp and engraved “Defiance to the Proud French;” and a 1764 powder horn inscribed “John Cox” and “1764, Fort Pitt.” Pitt was the western Pennsylvania fort built by British colonists during the Seven Years’ War. “To me, the biggest surprise was the way the documents and manuscripts performed. There was a lot of interest from both individuals

antiquesandauctionnews.net and institutions, including the Fort Pitt Museum,” according to Morphy. The ephemera category was led by a circa-1758 Francis Pfister folding map of the Hudson River Corridor, complete with original travel case. It surpassed expectations to close at $84,000. “We were so honored to have been chosen to auction Walter O’Connor’s incomparable collection,” Morphy said after the sale. “He had amassed and generously shared seven decades of knowledge with many friends who were grateful they could bid on pieces from his collection.” For more information, call 877-968-8880 or email info@morphyauctions.com. “Do You Read Me?” Book On Vintage Communication Toys Published By Schiffer Pop-Culture Photo Book Features Vintage Communication Toys, Graphics, And Price Guide Schiffer Publishing Ltd. of Atglen, Pa., would like to introduce “Do You Read Me? Vintage Communication Toys” by Leslie Singer. The invention of the telegraph, telephone, and broadcast signals gave children in mid-century America a new way to play. They could speak into a device, push a button,

turn a knob, and instantly be communicating with friends around the block or across the planet. In most cases, it was imaginary, but adults were actually doing it, and with the right “equipment,” children were, too! The 150 color images in “Do You Read Me? Vintage

Communication Toys” capture the excitement of these new technologies. The art deco and futuristic designs from the ‘30s through the ‘70s convey the wonder and optimism of the ever-evolving communication world. String and wire may have carried the signal, but it was the power of imagination

that really carried the message. Toy collectors, nostalgia buffs, and retro-future fans will appreciate the price guide and build-it-yourself communicator included with this beautifully photographed and designed volume. To learn more, visit www.schifferbooks.com.
