Special Installation Celebrates Alexander Hamilton est known for his appearance
the $10 bill and most B onrecently the subject of LinManuel Miranda’s award-winning musical, Alexander Hamilton continues to capture the imagination of Americans. In partnership with the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History, the New-York Historical Society is presenting a special installation of artifacts and documents that illustrate the story of Hamilton’s eminent career and infamous death. On view through Sunday, Nov. 29, the display includes the original pistols from the 1804 duel with vice president Aaron Burr that cost Hamilton his life. This special installation will celebrate the two men who have made this inimitable Founding Father once again topical: LinManuel Miranda, playwright and star of the hit Broadway musical “Hamilton,” and Ron Chernow, esteemed historian and author of the award-winning biography “Alexander Hamilton.”
Objects on view include the infamous Hamilton-Burr dueling pistols (ca. 1797), which belonged to Hamilton’s brother-in-law John Church, on loan from the JPMorgan Chase Historical Collection. Made of walnut, brass, and metal by the celebrated Wogdon Gunsmiths, the intricate weapons were favored by duelers
since Robert Wogdon opened his first shop in London in 1774. Exhibited with the notorious pistols are documents related to Hamilton’s political career and personal life, including a 1780 letter written by Hamilton while serving as George Washington’s aide-decamp during the American Revolution that reveals his
frustration with the weak central government. Also on view is a first edition of “The Federalist: A Collection of Essays” (1788), authored by Hamilton, James Madison, and John Jay, explaining the importance of the proposed new form of government in order to secure ratification of the Constitution. While serving as treasury secretary under Washington, Hamilton issued a report on public credit (1790) that advocated for the creation of a national bank. A copy of this report on display shows the first federal budget that lists the salaries for major government positions. Hamilton’s involvement in the pursuit of anti-slavery legislation is revealed by a New York City directory (1790), listing him as president of the New-York Society for Promoting the Manumission of Slaves. On a more personal note, in an intimate letter to his fiancée, Elizabeth Schuyler, Hamilton discusses their plan for a secret wedding and casts himself as “a Statesman and a soldier meta-
morphosed into a puny lover.” Above the display of documents hangs New-York Historical’s portrait of the statesman by John Trumbull, painted shortly after Hamilton’s untimely death in 1804. In addition, a selection of original manuscript documents and contemporary printed works evoking Hamilton’s several personas—scholar, soldier, statesman, and infamously, duelist— are on display in New-York Historical’s Patricia D. Klingenstein Library. Documents on view include a pay roll for Hamilton’s artillery company, written in his hand; a rare newspaper copy of Hamilton’s “The Federalist No. 1” that appeared in print prior to the publication of the book in the Gilder Lehrman display and was the first printing of all “The Federalist” essays; John Lansing’s notes on Hamilton’s speech at the Constitutional Convention; and a little-known letter written by (Continued on page 2)

assessment of what they have. As a collector who prefers higher-end items, I am often amazed at how much some collectors think their items are worth. Sadly, most collectors overestimate both their collection’s condition and actual monetary value rather than underestimate them. This is one reason why I always recommend that any collector who collects items of a high monetary value that can be certified should seek out certification. Third-party grading provides an accurate portrayal of the item in question, and it can even lead to a higher price in the overall marketplace. Unfortunately, all too often it takes knowing what items should be certified before proceeding. An honest full-service auction house can generally provide this necessary evaluation if needed. After an honest selfappraisal has been made by the collector of the items in question, the next logical question is determining which auction house is best for your collection. Most international and also

In my last article, titled “What to Expect W h e n Consigning: Part I - The Advantages of an Auction House,” I talked about what advantages a full-service auction house can provide a collector of antiques and collectibles when it is time to sell his or her collection. All too often, the subject of auction consignment is riddled with a general lack of understanding on the part of the consigner. It is also unfortunate that when a consigner needs the services of an auction house, it is sometimes at a time of great distress that involves a financial crisis, grief, or the breakup of a marriage. I want to reaffirm my belief that these are the worst times possible in which a collector should be forced to not only sell his or her prized treasures, but also expect to make smart financial decisions that can impact the rest of their lives. This series of
articles will look at how best to negotiate a consignment rate for the consigner while being understanding to the hard work of the chosen auction house. Most collectors have a rather emotional bias toward their collection or any items they own of value. Scroll through the tens of thousands of listings on eBay in any collectible category, and you are bound to encounter items that are nowhere near as perfect as their descriptions claim. Sellers have a bias toward their own property. If something can accurately be described as being in excellent to near mint condition, most sellers will unfortunately describe their item as being in near mint condition and conveniently leave off the excellent portion of the description almost every time. Even non-collectors are taught that items in better condition almost always sell for more money. This is why it is important for any collector who is thinking of consigning items to an auction house to do a very honest

executor of an estate, it may be best to determine if you did any business with certain auction houses while building your collection. More often than not, these will be some of the best places to contact when it is time to consign the collection. For any kind of mid- to higherend collection, a specialty auction house can be the way to go. For instance, if I was consigning my vintage advertising collection or high-end marble collection, I would start by contacting Morphy’s Auctions. For my graded collection of comic books, coins, and currency, Heritage Auctions is near the top of my list. Toys are a rather gray area, as it all depends on what you have. For antique to vintage toys in great condition and manufactured prior to the 1970s,
THE MILL PROPERTY ANTIQUES
almost any higher-end auction house has an antique toy department. For toys and action figures from the 1980s and newer, it becomes a lot trickier. Toys from the 1990s and up don’t really belong in a regional or international auction house. They are much too new, and most toys from this era are not that valuable. However, there are always exceptions to the rule, and as toy grading and certification continues to grow, so have prices on newer toys. It is worth noting that higher-end auction houses generally do have a minimum lot value. This can be anywhere from $100 and go all the way up to and above $5,000 dollars for some auction houses. I can verify that when Heritage Auctions sold off my high-grade vintage
comic book collection, there was a $500 dollar lot minimum for their “Signature Auction in which my items were placed. For the few items that did not meet this threshold, my remaining items were placed in one of their weekly category-specific auctions. This is done to ensure the quality of items being presented in each Signature Auction and is something a lot of bidders appreciate and expect. Now that the advantages of a full-service auction house have been established and an honest assessment of the items in question has been made, we can look at establishing a consignment rate based on the items being offered. This is something my next article will look at specifically. Until that time, I thank you for reading!

Planes, Trains, And Ocean Liners: Travel In Every Style On Thursday, Nov. 19, Swann Galleries will offer rare and important travel posters featuring classic images advertising ocean liner, rail, and plane travel, as well as scenic and exotic destinations. The top lot of the sale is Roger Broders’ chic and stylish “Dunkerque,” circa 1930 (est. $12,000 to $18,000).
Broders’ clean, simple lines heighten the art deco sensibility of this poster, which features a couple pulling into the port city on their yacht though it is, in fact, an advertisement for travel by rail. Another Broders work highlighting a destination to encourage travel by rail is “Chamonix Mt. Blanc,” 1930 (est. $8,000 to $12,000), depicting an action-packed hockey match from the first winter Olympic games, held in Chamonix in 1924. Other compelling rail images in the sale include multiple posters by Leslie Ragan, such as “The New 20th Century Limited,” 1939 (est. $8,000 to $12,000), boasting a travel between New York and Chicago in 16 hours; Frank Newbould’s “Whitley Bay / It’s Quicker By Rail,” 1940 (est. $7,000 to $10,000); and Cecil King’s “LMS / The Merseyside Express,” circa 1937 (est. $3,000 to $4,000). Majestic ocean liner This is Leslie Ragan’s “The posters feature bold colors New 20th Century Limited,” and geometry, including the from 1939, and estimated at 1928 “United States Lines,” $8,000 to $12,000. by prominent poster artist
Adolphe Mouron Cassandre (est. $10,000 to $15,000); and Willem Frederick Ten Broek’s towering “Holland Amerika Linie,” 1936 (est. $4,000 to $6,000). Odin Rosenvinge’s scarce “Cunard Line / Liverpool New York Boston / (Lusitania),” circa 1907 (est. $7,000 to $10,000), features a dramatic
nocturnal seascape crossed by the doomed ship, released before the ship’s maiden voyage in 1907. Another beautiful image colored with retrospective tragedy is Montague Birrell Black’s “White Star Line / Olympic & Titanic,” circa 1910 (est. $7,000 to $10,000). Printed in a limited run to hang in the White Star
offices, the poster shows the Olympic and the world famous Titanic passing as sea. Another image of the Olympic is also included in the sale, James Scrimgeour Mann’s “White Star Line / R.M.S. Olympic and Titanic,” circa 1911 (est. $5,000 to $7,500). Posters promoting travel

Special Events & Sales Throughout The Year!
Modern Design Leads Kaminski’s September Sales Kaminski Auctions hosted two successful auctions in the month of September, starting with an estate sale on Sept. 13 and a Twentieth Century and Modern Design sale on Sept. 27. Top lots in the estate sale included a rare pair of Cardeihac parcial gilt master salts, hallmarked with a first standard Minerva head for .950 silver, and weighing approximately 13.7 troy ounces. They were from the private collection of Dorothea M. Beers, Palm Beach, Fla., a noted dealer in Continental porcelain and silver. The master salts sold to a phone bidder from the United Kingdom for $11,400. Asian highlights included a pair of late 18th or early 19th century Chinese tables with porcelain plaques depicting the Immortals, from a Massachusetts collection that sold for $9,000. Fine art in the sale that
sold well included a Spanish portrait attributed to Pourbus in a heavily carved gilt ornate frame that brought $8,400 and a Max Weber landscape that sold for $6,600. The Twentieth Century and Modern sale brought a whole new audience to the gallery. Top lots included a modernist painting by the French artist Charles Venard (Continued on page 9)

“New York / Fly TWA,” 1956, captures the action and spectacle of the famous locale (est. $4,000 to $6,000). Jean Carlu’s graphic “CAF / Voyages Aériens,” circa 1926, features bold letters and the company’s emblem, which he designed (est. $4,000 to $6,000). Jean Jacquelin’s “Au Maroc Par Avion / Aeropostale,” 1930, contrasts the oranges and reds of Morocco against a clear blue sky pierced by a towering minaret. Like Jacquelin’s poster, many images advertising travel to exotic destinations borrow their color schemes from the views the locations will provide a traveler. Pierre Fix-Masseau’s “Le Mont St. Michel,” 1937, features the
calm blue-green waters of the Cousenon River surrounding the fortified monastery (est. $2,000 to $3,000), while Sobha Singh’s “See India / North-West Frontier,” circa 1935, shows the mottled tan and greens of the Khyber Pass in what is now Pakistan (est. $2,000 to $3,000) and Zdenek Rykr’s “Praha,” 1937, borrows the striking shades of twilight to depict the bridges over Prague’s Vltava River (est. $2,000 to $3,000). An Art Deco poster by Maurice Lauro for “Trouville,” 1927, is exceptionally rare. While vertical variants of the Trouville image have been seen, this horizontal version, also showing young people strolling down a boardwalk,

history,” said Peggy Fogelman, acting director of the Morgan. “His influence on writers is multigenerational, ongoing, and worldwide. His stories and novels form the very foundation of modern literature. His life, itself, from expatriate Paris in the 1920s to Key West and Cuba, is the stuff of legend. The Morgan is deeply
honored to partner with the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum to present this landmark exhibition and offer an intimate view of one of the great icons of American literature,” said Fogelman, “We are thrilled to collaborate with the Morgan on this first-of-its-kind exhibition capturing Hemingway as he revolutionized the literary landscape. The Nobel-Prize laureate is often portrayed as a larger-than-life figure. The materials on display, most for the very first time, will serve to humanize the man and edify his creative talent, ”said Tom Putnam, Kennedy Library director. Exhibition Prelude “The world breaks everyone, and afterward, some are strong at the broken places,” Ernest Hemingway

In the early 1920s Hemingway had recovered from his war wounds and was determined to make his living as a writer. He moved to Paris with his wife, Hadley, and became part of a group of artists who found in the “City of Light” a conducive environment for work. His constellation of friends and acquaintances would include

F. Scott Fitzgerald, James Joyce, Ezra Pound, Gertrude Stein, Pablo Picasso, Juan Gris, and Joan Miró, among others. Sylvia Beach’s legendary bookstore, Shakespeare and Company, served as a gathering place. Looking back on those years, Hemingway would famously write, “If you are lucky enough to have lived in Paris as a young man, then wherever you go for the rest of your life it stays with you, for Paris is a moveable feast.” With the city as his backdrop, Hemingway would
launch a career that in the next two decades saw the completion of five novels, two works of nonfiction, and five collections of short stories, most of which have taken their rightful place in the canon of 20th century American literature. The Exhibition Section 1 — The Class Prophet In his famous 1958 interview for “The Paris Review,” George Plimpton asked, “Can you recall an exact moment when you decided to become a writer?” Hemingway replied, “No, I always wanted to be a writer.” Hemingway began writing and publishing in his teens, his first fiction appearing in “Tabula,” his high school magazine. In 1917 he took a job as a cub reporter at “The Kansas City Star,” where he learned the essentials of good writing from the newspaper’s stylesheet. Rule number one was, “Use short sentences. Use short first paragraphs. Use vigorous English.” Other rules included, “Avoid the use of adjectives,” and “eliminate every superfluous word.” Hemingway remained with the “Star” for a relatively short period, from October 1917 until he enlisted in April 1918, but the precepts he
learned there shaped his literary style and endured forever. Section 2 — World War I “The reason you are so sore, you missed the war,” Hemingway told F. Scott Fitzgerald in 1925, “because war is the best subject of all. It groups the maximum of material and speeds up the action and brings out all sorts of stuff that normally you have to wait a lifetime to get.” Hemingway’s participation in World War I was brief, but its impact on his writing career was profound. In spring 1918 Hemingway enlisted in the American Red Cross and arrived in Italy on June 4. Little over a month later he was severely wounded. After a series of operations to remove 227 shrapnel fragments and bullets from his legs, he returned to the United States in January 1919. His experience as a war casualty, in combination with his deep study of the conflict, shaped numerous short stories as well as “The Sun Also Rises” and “A Farewell to Arms.” As biographer Michael Reynolds remarked, when Hemingway returned home, “he had experienced the quintessential modern experience, the violence of war. There would be no peace

in his time.” Section 3 — Paris “Paris was the place,” said Gertrude Stein, “that suited us who were to create the 20th century art and literature.” Hemingway took up residence in Paris in January 1922. Ostensibly there to write feature stories on European affairs for “The Toronto Star,” he arrived with letters of introduction to Stein, Ezra Pound, and Sylvia (Continued on page 26)

Ernest Hemingway (Continued from page 24)
Beach. He would later acknowledge that he “learned a lot” from Stein “though not half as much as he learned from Ezra Pound or one tenth as much as he learned from James Joyce.” Hemingway covered the Greco-Turkish war in September–October 1922, and from that time began to regularly publish his poetry and short stories in literary magazines. In Paris, Hemingway transformed himself from a journalist into a writer of fiction and, in doing so, forged a new style in literature. When “In Our

Time” was published in 1925, “The New York Times” commented that “his language is fibrous and athletic, colloquial and fresh, hard and clean, his very prose seems to have an organic being of its own.” Included in this section is a letter written to Hemingway by F. Scott Fitzgerald in December 1926. Fitzgerald was an early champion of Hemingway’s work and wrote to congratulate him on the critical reception of “The Sun Also Rises,” saying “I’m delighted with what press I’ve already seen of The Sun ect. Did not realize that you had stolen it all from me but am prepared to believe that its true & shall tell everyone. By the way I liked it in print even better than in manuscript.” Section 4 — Key West and Havana Hemingway resided in Paris until the end of 1929. For the next 10 years he lived mostly in Key West, Fla., with his second wife, Pauline, although he returned periodically to Europe to attend the Fiesta San Fermín in Pamplona, Spain. In the spring of 1939, Martha Gellhorn, who would become his third wife, rented a farmhouse, the Finca Vigia near Havana. Hemingway moved in with her, and they purchased the house shortly after their marriage in November 1940. Hemingway’s literary fame grew steadily in the
1930s on the heels of the highly successful 1929 publication of “A Farewell to Arms,” which he completed in Key West. The exhibition includes the first two pages of the manuscript with the famous opening paragraph: “In the late summer of that year we lived in a house in a village that looked across the river and the plain to the mountains. In the bed of the river there were pebbles and boulders, dry and white in the sun, and the water was clear and swiftly moving and blue in the channels. Troops went by the house and down the road and the dust they raised powdered the leaves of the trees. The trunks of the trees too were dusty and leaves fell early that year and we saw the troops marching along the road and the dust rising and leaves, stirred by the breeze, falling and the soldiers marching and afterward the road bare and white except for the leaves.” While Hemingway maintained his fierce commitment to literature, he also indulged his passions, and it proved to be a decade of diverse adventure and excitement for him. He published a collection of short stories, “Winner Take Nothing” (1933), wrote fiction and journalism for “Esquire” and “Cosmopolitan,” hunted in Sun Valley, Idaho, and on the Serengeti Plain, and fished the Gulf Stream. In 1937 he reported on the Spanish Civil War, which he prophesied as “the” dress rehearsal for the inevitable European war, and drew upon his experiences in Spain for the novel that consolidated his literary reputation in 1940, “For Whom the Bell Tolls.” Section 5 — World War II In the mid 1930s Hemingway was vehemently isolationist. “Of the hell broth that is brewing in Europe,” he told his “Esquire” magazine readers, “we have no need to drink. Europe has always fought, the intervals of peace are only Armistices. We were fools to be sucked in once on a European war and we should never be sucked in again.” But in the same article he also observed ruefully that “No catalogue of horrors ever kept men from war.” His own first-hand knowledge of war, and its fatal dangers, did not keep Hemingway at home. In 1944, upon returning to Europe to report the war for “Collier’s” magazine, he explained his presence at the front line by saying, “I got war fever like the measles.” He was widely admired not only by many of his fellow war correspondents, but also by military personnel, who saw him as an “imaginative military technician and strategist.” Colonel Charles

T. Lanham, commanding officer of the 22nd Regiment, described Hemingway as “the bravest man he ever knew.” On view in this section is a heavily-bearded Hemingway’s Overseas Visa issued by the Allied Supreme Command. The ASC would later bring charges against the writer that he had taken on a combat role in his coverage of the war. Section 6 — An Old Hunter Talking with Gods “Writing well is impossibly difficult,” Hemingway told George Plimpton, and “the time to work is shorter all the time and if you waste
it you feel you have committed a sin for which there is no forgiveness.” After the end of the Second World War, the austere discipline that had always been selfimposed and which had served Hemingway so well from his earliest days as a writer grew increasingly burdensome to him. He became more keenly aware that, as Eliot put it, “every attempt / Is a wholly new start, and a different kind of failure.” Hemingway continued to write prolifically but finishing what he had begun became more and more difficult. Depression and deteriorating health took their toll
on his creativity. After the mostly negative reviews of his 1950 novel “Across the River and Into the Trees” he published only one more book, “The Old Man and the Sea,” for which he received the 1952 Pulitzer Prize. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in literature in 1954 “for his mastery of the art of narrative and for the influence that he has exerted on contemporary style.” Organization and Sponsorship “Ernest Hemingway: Between Two Wars” is cocurated by Declan Kiely, Robert H. The offerings of antiquarian books, many of which are from a Virginia institution, and fine maps is far the best we have had the opportunity to handle,” said Jeffrey S. Evans. The Jeffrey S. Evans & Associates annual fall lecture series will take place on Friday, Nov. 13, at 6 p.m. when Jeffrey S. Evans will present “From Kindig to Tannehill: Antiques dealers and collecting in the Shenandoah Valley from the 1910s to the 1970s.” The lecture will take a look back at the history of the antiques trade in the Shenandoah Valley, from the arrival of the earliest Yankee dealers to the first public auctions to advertise “antiques” and the establishment of the Harrisonburg “Flea Market” in 1972. This lecture is free and open to the public. For further information, call 504-434-3939 or visit www.jeffreysevans.com.
