Rare Lots And Robust Results Combine In Ann Arbor Auction Event
rare and desirable 1905 Wur-litzer Style 17 PianOrchestra in excellent working condition soared to $120,000, and an equally rare early 1800s Ephraim Thayer handdrawn, hand-operated fire pump with ties to Paul Revere realized $110,000 at a huge three-day sale held October 5-7 by Showtime Auction Services at the Washtenaw Farm Council Grounds in Ann Arbor, Michigan. The Wurlitzer PianOrchestra featured violacello, pipes, piano, mandolin, cymbal bass drum, snare drum, display, glockenspiel and 37 pipes, all housed in a monumental and handsome display cabinet measuring 94 inches tall by 69 inches

Headlining the auction was the lifetime collection of Robert and Harriett Potter – a vast accumulation of fire fighting memorabilia and other items, spanning 50plus years; Part 2 of the outstanding lifetime pedal car and toy collection of Ed and Christy Ramsey;

Over 1,500 people registered to bid online (through LiveAuctioneers.com and iCollector.com). M o r e than 400 phone b i d s and over 1,000 faxed left bids were also recorded. prices of $15,400. One was a rare Campbell’s Soup porcelain thermometer, one of only two known, 7-1/2 inches by 12-1/2 inches, in good condition except for some minor paint loss. The other was a dolphin cigar lighter with sterling silver trim and horn body. The piece was purchased from a museum and was in excellent, all-original condition. A 1925 American National Packard coupe kids’ pedal car, 57 inches long, one of only three made and in excellent condition, sped off for $11,865; a Pairpoint Rose Puffy boudoir lamp with 13 inch by 22 inch shade, in excellent condition, lit up the room for $11,300; a Beard Mfg. Co. salesman’s sample windmill (Model “M,” Angola, Ind.), 19-1/2 inches tall, brought $10,200; and a Polar Bear tobacco tin store bin (the rare version with the word “SCRAP” on it) hit $4,200. Showtime Auction Services has moved its spring auction from the usual last weekend in March to the weekend of April 12-14, 2013, so as not to collide with Easter. Featured will be the lifetime, 40-year collection of Bill and Kathie Gasperino, collectors in many categories, Part 2 of the Robert and Harriet Potter collection, and quality merchandise from over 100 other consignors. It promises to be a diverse sale. Showtime Auction Services is based in Woodhaven, Michigan. The firm is always accepting quality items for future

By Barbara Lind One of the most timehonored traditions of the upcoming holiday season is the fresh-from-the-oven homemade treat, and that tradition goes far back in history. Most of us have fond memories of a favorite cookie, pie, cake, or candy that was served for Thanksgiving, Christmas, or Hanukkah. Perhaps those memories are what make vintage kitchen collectibles so popular year after year. During the month of November, the Haddon Heights Antiques Center will be presenting a special display sure to make your mouth water - or at least jog some memories. Baked to Perfection will showcase anything and everything related to baking. Mixing bowls - either individual ones or matching sets - will be an important part of the display. From mellow yellowware to colorful 1950’s Pyrex, they are an important part of baking. So are the canisters that hold the flour and sugar and spices. Vintage kitchen utensils, including rolling pins, whisks, measuring spoons, and measuring cups will be an important part of the display, too. And don’t forget cookbooks. A traditional recipe from an old cookbook may turn out to become a new favorite with your family. Baked to Perfection will be on display until the end

items, to be honest, that I struggled to sell, for personal reasons and thus felt I could not allow them to be sold for nothing. There were about four of them. In preparing to sell things at sale, I made sure to describe them accurately for the auctioneer. Too many sellers rely solely upon others to describe their items with the end result that the wisdom that went into buying it by you - the seller - has now been completely wiped clean. I also make sure to deal only with reputable auctioneers and consignment shops. Finally, I go in with a reasonable set of expectations about what the

First and foremost, I have to talk about a critical core value of my heritage - that deep seated desire not to lose money on any transaction and to ensure that no one ever makes too much money on me. You know what I am talking about! Selling your collection becomes the passion for recouping not only the money you invested in those items, but also making money off of it! So, I took my own advice and let the items go without reserve. There were a few exceptions and they were

Detecting Counterfeit Quarters
CONCEPTS 1 AUCTION HOUSE 1125 Arnold Avenue,
By Fred C. Beihl, Auctioneer & Appraiser affiliation with the United States Mint. Many times a customer visits a coin show with these coins for sale only to be disappointed with no dealer interest at all. The coins are not always made of base metal. Sometimes the counterfeit coins are struck in pure .999F silver, and are of excellent Proof minted quality. There are probably counterfeits of each US series States Q u a r t e r s , Territories and America the B e a u t i f u l Quarters program coins. By Act of Congress on March 4th, 1931, it was decided to p o r t r a y Washington on the quarter dollar instead of a half dollar. The original Washington quarter obverse, based on Houdon’s (1785) bust, was designed by New York sculptor John Flanagan; and his initials, JF can be found at the truncation of Washington’s neck. With the introduction of the State Quarters in 1999 a new reverse would be used to commemorate a State’s
Modern counterfeit coins could be in your coin collection - this article will explain how to recognize and detect the silver “Proof” and non silver counterfeit quarters that are currently circulating! The problem with some counterfeit coins today is that there are companies here and abroad actually using die stamping methods to produce genuine looking coins. These are not cast coins with blurry details. Not all counterfeits are marked “copy.” As the Bourse Chairman of our local S h r e w s b u r y , Pennsylvania, Coin Show I feel the responsibility of extra diligence in intercepting counterfeit or deceptive coins from being sold. In my opinion even if a counterfeit is marked “copy” it is still a counterfeit. Marked and unmarked copy coins show up at coin shows all the time. The general public buys fantasy or copy coins from mass marketing advertisers claiming “ E a r l y Release,” special “Vault” finds, or special mint offers of coin designs. If you read the fine print, the advertisement contains a disclaimer of any
Point Pleasant, NJ 08742 entrance into the Union. The obverse was modified to include the legend, United States of America, and Quarter Dollar usually found on the reverse design. You will find the initials of William Cousins Mint engraver & sculptor added next to John Flanagan’s at (Continued on page 16)

43rd Annual Hunterdon Show The 43rd Annual Antique Show and Sale at the Hunterdon Central High School Field House is expected to grow even larger! As is tradition, the show will be held on Thanksgiving weekend, Saturday, November 24, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Sunday, November 25, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. (opening earlier by popular request). The Hunterdon Central Field House is located at 35 Junction Road, in historic Flemington, New Jersey. Spaces are still available. “We look forward to hosting over 70 plus quality primitive and country dealers, many of whom come year after year,” say the show promoters. Available for purchase will be fine country furniture, folk art, antique quilts, estate jewelry, stoneware, basketry, Stangl pottery, antique prints, books, tools, rugs, dolls, and glassware. Because of the time of year, you can expect to see fine vintage Christmas items. Homemade food will be available each day by
Theresa’s Gourmet Deli & Café of Flemington, celebrating their 8th year in business! Theresa’s offers the best in “fresh home cooking” cooking from scratch using fresh and healthful ingredients in soups, salads, sandwiches and desserts. Tables and plenty of seating will be available in the large Field House cafeteria. This show is sponsored by The Red Devils Main Booster Club of Hunterdon Central High School. The Antique Show Committee has put their talents and experience together again to help make this year’s show even better. Remember, all proceeds from the show support the awardwinning Hunterdon Central Athletic program and funds several athletic scholarships to outstanding college-bound seniors.
