After a proclamation by George Washington to Congress, Thanksgiving has been celebrated nationally on and off since 1789. It originated as a harvest festival. President Abraham Lincoln in 1863 proclaimed the last Thursday in November to celebrate Thanksgiving as a federal holiday. Today, we celebrate Thanksgiving in America with family and friends, giving thanks for
one’s blessings and freedoms. The day after Thanksgiving is called Black Friday, and the day following, Small Business Saturday. It is the unofficial start of the holiday shopping season.
