President Abraham Lincoln in 1863 proclaimed the last Thursday in November to celebrate Thanksgiving as a federal holiday. Today, we celebrate Thanksgiving in America with family and friends, giving thanks for

one’s blessings and freedoms. The day after Thanksgiving is called Black Friday, and the day following, Small Business Saturday. It is the unofficial start of the holiday shopping season. The Historic Burlington Antiques and Art Emporium invites shoppers on Friday, Nov. 23 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The coffee pot will be on, and complimentary snacks will be available. The multi-dealer shop will give a free poinsettia to the first 25 transactions (one plant per customer). The Emporium’s friendly staff can help find that special and unique present. COLLECTOR CHATS WITH PETER S. SEIBERT

THE

SLATINGTON MARKETPLACE

I was emailing with a colleague the other week, and one of the topics in our discussion was how to attract customers to antique malls. With the changing economy and the soft market, antique co-ops are becoming a scarce commodity. What surprises me is how co-ops are being impacted at every level of the market. With that being said, I still do get frustrated by the malls that look like pig pens. Here in Virginia, there a host of such places, where an item is dropped into the middle of a space and allowed to simply sit there until it sells, it rots, or someone kicks it. I have often heard that this is about

have seen customers go into such mixed uses and really walk away confused by it all. One phenomenon that I do think the mall owners should consider is going into some of the vacant mall spaces. In many cases these empty mall spaces provide good shopping spaces, good interiors, and a host of other options. In the deep South, I have seen such shops, and really am quite impressed by the quality of the merchandise.

archaic nature of blue laws in this day and age, that is just crazy. Similarly, I am surprised that many malls close on minor holidays. For us, taking the family to the antique malls on Father’s or Mother’s Day was an enjoyable way to spend the day. And we spent money. I can understand Christmas or Thanksgiving, but I’m not sure I get the rest of the times. In the museum world, it used to be that Mondays were the day to be closed. What many discovered is that a museum that was open on Mondays cleaned up with people who were frustrated other places were closed. A good lesson for the antiques co-ops. Finally, I have to make an appeal on my favorite bugaboo. If a mall calls itself an antiques mall, then contemporary craft, contemporary repro booths, and arguably export/import booths don’t belong. It confuses and mixes the messaging for everyone. I

the surprise factor. The problem in my mind is that no one really finds great treasures in these places. Junk is junk, and in a lot of cases the piles do nothing more than turn people off. I recall visiting a nowclosed (and for good reason) co-op in Lebanon County, Pa. The booths were so packed that you could not get around. I picked up an item, and it caused a chain reaction that resulted in a broken plate. Let me be clear, I intended to pay for the damage, although I frankly thought the dealer should have been held to some level of accountability because of their poor booth installation. The broken Noritake plate was proof to me that such booths were hazards. I will also say that I think a lot of the malls really need to consider extending or altering their hours of operation. My favorites are the malls that are closed on Saturdays and Sunday. Really! Beyond the

The top achiever was a Chippewa in green with back spotted sides, made of wood and in the original box. The lure, in very good-plus condition, realized $10,030. The runner-up lots were a Chippewa in fancy green back, in the box, made of wood and in very good-plus condition ($7,670), and a Chippewa in green with back spotted sides, in the box, made of wood and graded very good ($7,080). Three rainbow Chippewas also cracked the top ten, as one example went to a determined bidder for $3,245, and the other went for $2,006. The Lurette No. 2 lure, made by Canada Needle and Fishing Tackle, wowed bidders with its unique and imaginative design. It was a “living bait lure” that boasted a glass bulb surrounded by hooks that were designed to tempt fish with a live crayfish or worm. The example sold, in the original box and with both sets of paper instructions, was in superb shape and made $4,425. The auction also featured a Fred Pardee Kent double spinner, an F.C. Woods expert minnow, a Dam Ever Ready jointed sunfish, and various lures from A Vaughn’s cardboard lure box with paperwork (no lure, Heddon, Creek just the box), made by Henry J. Lewis and Co. in the Chub, South 1930s, graded good, went for $2,124. Bend, Paw Paw,

The two-day sale grossed more than $175,000. “The auction was fastpaced, with bidders not afraid to jump in and bid immediately,” said Ben Lennox, a Canadian collector and staff member of Miller & Miller Auctions. “It was a gathering of astute collectors who drove the price of key lots feverishly. Clars Auction Gallery hosted their major Fine Art, Decorative Art, Furniture, Jewelry and Asian Art Auction on Sept. 15 and 16. The global market responded to the investment-level works and property that were offered, with numerous lots soaring for well over high estimate. Exceptionally strong prices were achieved in all categories, and a number of exciting surprises were had as well. The property offered at this sale came from prominent California estates as well as museums, private institutions and special collections. “This was our strongest sale of the year. The specialists worked hard to get an exceptionally strong collection of pieces, and our marketing department promoted them strongly through a variety of media,” said Redge Martin, president of Clars Auction Gallery.
