Amelia Jeffers Brings Back Decades-Old Tradition At Garth’s Barn Exciting Plans In The Works For Both Her And The Garth’s Name Amelia Jeffers was wrapping up year-end auction planning, cataloguing, and marketing at her eponymous auction firm when an unexpected turn of events in late October brought about a significant change affecting not only her fall auction schedule, but the course of her business moving forward. Finalizing the cataloguing and ads for a Thanksgiving Weekend Auction that is scheduled for Friday and Saturday, Nov. 24 and 25, at The Garth’s Barn in Delaware, Ohio, Jeffers was on track to revive a “Black Friday” tradition that had lasted for more than 60 years. Traditionally, it ranked as one of the biggest and most important sales of the year. Jeffers’ return to the historical barn last year marked a pivotal moment for her personally and professionally: within the walls of the 200-plus year old building is where she had “grown up” in the auction business under the tutelage of Tom and Carolyn Porter as a coowner of Garth’s Auctions from 1996 until her departure in 2017. It was also where her four children had grown up; Jeffers lived on the property for a number of years when they were young. The traditional Thanksgiving Auction was coming together beautifully with choice objects from consignors throughout the country, including an original Alexander Calder with Pace Galleries provenance, an important Vermont chest attributable to Ebenezer Wheeler, an early scherenschnitte found in Tryon, N.C., and a variety of other fine art,

folk art, early furniture, and American decorative accessories. “I am really proud of the way my business has grown incrementally over the past 18 months,” said Jeffers. “The Thanksgiving Auction at The Garth’s Barn marks my second auction in that facility and is an assemblage my team and I have worked hard to pull together. We had a schedule for 2024 that had teed up a single-owner collection under contract now and a number of others in various stages of confirmation. And then I got the call, for me, the call of a lifetime.” The call Jeffers referenced came

On Sunday, Dec. 3, the new Holiday Countdown Toy Show, Delaware’s largest toy event, moves in. There will be 175 tables of new, collectible, and antique toys from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission will be $7, and children under the age of 12 will be admitted free of charge. Thanksgiving Decorations Are Focus Of Special Sales Display With Thanksgiving a favorite holiday of many Americans, it’s no wonder that the Haddon Heights Antiques Center usually devotes its November special sales display to this very special holiday. Many customers come into the shop on the hunt for turkey platters, turkey planters, turkey salt and pepper shakers, and tableware and accessories in autumn’s shades of amber, rust, orange, and yellow. Gathering the makings of a distinctly vintage Thanksgiving table all in one place is especially helpful. Shopgoers also find great decorations such as Thanksgiving themed glasses, goblets, and stemware; copper accessories; antique and vintage bakeware; table linens and more. Don’t be

surprised to see some figural Pilgrims as well. Of course, November also marks the beginning of the Christmas shopping and decorating frenzy, and the shop’s many dealers are already stocking their spaces with vintage decorative pieces as well as items that make unique gifts. Come see why the Haddon Heights Antiques Center has been a customer favorite for over 30 years. Open seven days a week with extended hours on Friday evenings, it is located at 531 Clements Bridge Road in Barrington, N.J. Use Barrington as the location for GPS directions. The video game industry has come a very long way since its humble beginnings in the 1970s that featured Atari video games with crude graphics and sounds. By the time Nintendo entered the market with their successful launch of the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1985, it was becoming quite clear that video games were here to stay and not some passing fad. Over the next decade, Nintendo would, in large part, dominate the world of home video games. Some competitors would have more staying power than others. Sega proceeded to be a worthy opponent in the early 1990s with their beloved Sega Genesis system, while Sony became a prominent challenger to this very day with its Playstation line of video game systems in 1995. It was, however, during the formative years of 1985 through 1995 that the home video game industry found its way into the future by testing some new and interesting concepts. Unfortunately, most of these concepts would fail long term, but each one presents something interesting for the modern era vintage video game collector. Every now and then I like to explore the history and collectability of some of the video game industry’s most notable failures. Much like in life, success can often create arrogance, whereas failure teaches us a valuable lesson. Almost every single successful company that is still in business today has some notable product failures in their history. Does anyone remember the massive failure of New Coke in 1985? Or how about the horrible reception that Crystal Pepsi received when it was first released in 1992? The video game industry is no different. When most people think of Nintendo, they think of a fun company who gave us such loveable characters like “Mario,” “Donkey Kong,” “Kirby,” and “Pokemon.” However, few can fathom that Nintendo has ever failed at anything, especially after the success of the original Nintendo Entertainment System. The company does have one notable failure that we must talk about simply due to the system’s uniqueness and overall collectability. In order to discuss this failure, we must go back to the early 1990s. Back in the 1990s, the video game industry was quite different than today. In

Only Known Surviving Poster From One Of Buddy Holly And Ritchie Valens’ Final Performances Debuts At Heritage

Feb. 1, 1959, “Winter Dance Party” Placard To Take Center Stage

44 North Bedford Street

CARLISLE, PA 17013

“The Winter Dance Party of 1959,” as it was called, was a concert tour boasting a line-up of young hit-makers still on the ascent. Among the roster was Buddy Holly, at the time 22 years old, and Ritchie Valens, singer of “La Bamba” and “Donna.” Dion and the Belmonts were then mere teenagers in love. And J.P. Richardson, a singing, songwriting DJ from Texas, was called “The Big Bopper.” The Winter Dance Party was supposed to rave on for 24 days through the Midwest, beginning Jan. 23 in Milwaukee, Wis. However,

the tour would only have 11 shows. On Feb. 3, 1959, Holly, Valens and Richardson were killed in a plane crash near Clear Lake, Iowa, on their way to a show in Moorhead, Minn. The accident was coined “The Day the Music Died.” The few tangible keepsakes from that ill-fated tour, a scant handful of posters advertising the Winter Dance Party, have become among rock’s most sought-after treasures. One sold at Heritage last year to become the world’s most valuable concert poster. For only the third time, Heritage will offer a Winter

Dance Party placard during the Nov. 18, 19, and 20 Music Memorabilia and Concert Posters Signature Auction. It’s the only known placard promoting the Feb. 1, 1959, concert at the Riverside Ballroom in Green Bay, Wis. Some 30 hours following that show, Holly, Valens and Richardson died in that plane crash. It’s the last poster from a concert during which Holly, Valens and Richardson performed. The show in Clear Lake was a last-minute addition to the tour, so no mass posters, handbills, programs or even tickets were printed. There

was only a solitary ad in the local newspaper. This stunning poster survives only because of John Daughtery, who attended the Green Bay show with some friends. The following day, he pulled into a gas station and noticed another customer had a small stack of the Riverside Ballroom posters in his back seat. Daughtery asked the man if he could have two of the posters as keepsakes. The man handed them over because there was no point in keeping advertisements for something that had already happened. Potter & Potter Auctions is pleased to announce a 272-lot live sale to be held on Nov. 30 and also streamed on the company’s website at www.potterauctions.com. The sale is highlighted by a collection of Lewis Carroll (Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, 1832-98) books and artwork. Carrol is most famous for “Alice in Wonderland,” and the top expected lot is a signed, first

This was rare as Dodgson was careful to protect his privacy and to prevent his serious mathematical works from being linked with his children’s books. This lot also includes a first edition, first state of Carroll’s “Through the Looking-Glass” and “What

Alice Found There.” It was published in London by Macmillan and Co. in 1871 but dated 1872. It includes illustrations by John Tenniel and a publisher’s ad for Dodgson’s works on the frontispiece.
