Eleven original paintings by the acclaimed 20th-century Canadian folk artist Maud Lewis (1903-80) sold for a combined $559,510 in an online-only Canadiana and Folk Art auction held Oct. 8 by Miller & Miller Auctions Ltd., based in New Hamburg, Ontario. Overall, 344 lots came up for bid in the auction, which grossed a robust $871,695. All figures quoted in this report are in Canadian dollars.
documentaries, and even a feature film. She was born into relative comfort and obscurity and died in poverty, though enjoying national fame. She overcame severe physical challenges to create a unique artistic style and sparked a boom in folk art in her home province.
Decorating For Thanksgiving
It’s time to talk turkey because Thanksgiving is just around the corner. Whatever the decorating needs are, the Haddon Heights Antiques Center is ready to fulfill them. Its special sales display has lots of ideas as well.
How about a strategically placed vintage ceramic turkey or two on a table for the living room or on the dining room sideboard? The special sales display has dozens to choose from. How about
Though she rarely left her tiny house, Lewis’s works have travelled around the world, and in the decades since her death she has become an iconic figure of Nova Scotia and a beloved character in the popular imagination. She painted many different vehicles that were part of her life and were the inspirations for many of her subjects.
Fellow Canadian artist John H. Kinnear corresponded with Lewis from the time she became famous, in the 1960s, until her death in 1980, acting as her de facto agent. Kinnear would send her masonite boards, brushes and requested paints. Maud would send the finished paintings for Kinnear to sell, and he would send the proceeds to her home in Marshalltown.
The painted black hardwood Iroquois/Christian Resurrection walking stick made in Quebec in the second half of the 19th century, with a stylized carving of a beaver for a handle, went for $7,080.
Of the 11 Lewis paintings in the auction, “Winter Sleigh Ride” was an expected top earner, with a pre-sale estimate of $20,000-$25,000. It ended up selling for $100,300. The signed, ca. 1955, 9-by-11 inch mixed media-on-beaverboard was a snowy winter Christmas season scene, similar to a later image used for a series of Canadian postage stamps.
Maud Lewis was one of Canada’s most renowned artists, the subject of numerous monographs, novels, plays,
“The simplicity and honesty of Canadian folk art by Maud Lewis, Joe Sleep and Joe Norris crushed high expectations,” said Ethan Miller of Miller & Miller Auctions Ltd. “Formal British underperformed, but the bright and optimistic works by the above mentioned surprised us. This sale was a compilation of three great collections, and the highlights in each performed well. What it proved to us is that collectors are willing to pay for documented pieces with firm provenance.”
The ca. 1975 oil-on-panel harbor scene by the late folk artist Joe Norris (1924-96), titled “Lower Prospect” (the town in Nova Scotia where Norris spent most of his life), signed and titled lower left, left the room for $7,080. Also, an oil-on-board rendering of flowers by another Nova Scotia artist, Joe Sleep (1914-78), 28.5 inches square and artist signed and dated (’77) lower right, brought $6,490. Sleep learned to draw while hospitalized in Halifax.
The rest of the auction was a market fresh offering of Canadiana and folk art, from some old collections. The backbone of the sale was built on the

collection of world-class walking sticks and folk art carvings of Jim Fleming. Also up for bid was Canadiana and folk art from Marty Osler and items from the Susan Murray collection.
An exquisite mixed media diorama by Adelard Brousseau of Quebec titled “Maple Sugar Time” (ca. 1930) finished at $10,620. It was a rendition of a traditional Quebec rural scene, measuring 36.5-by-21-by-24.5 inches wide. Brousseau achieved the diorama by meticulously carving, one by one, the figures,
the tools and animals in the scene.
An acrylic-on-paper by Canadian Woodland artist Norval Morrisseau (1932-2007), titled “Ancestral Visitor,” (1998) brought together many elements, such as spirits, a continuance of life in the body of one animal while showing a connection to other life and spirit forms. The signed work realized $11,800.
Walking sticks from the Jim Fleming collection included a mid-19th century Eastern Canadian Maritimes carved walking stick made of marine ivory, baleen and narwhal tusk, with the handle carved in the form of a forearm with a closed hand, and the shaft carved with spiraled fluting, selling for $5,015.
A late 19th-century Quebec carved, stained and painted pine gum box, book form with a drawer, boldly carved with three straps and leaf fronds, and a back with varied geometric carvings and crosses, changed hands for $9,440, while a stained birch Tree of Life carved gum box, spine carved “Frank Martel, St. Jerome, 1910,” one side carved with the Tree of Life and birds, the other side with chalice within an oval field, decorated with gold paint, hit $4,248.

Historic Rock Ford Publishes Fascinating History Of Long Rifles During The American Revolution
After over two years of planning, “Long Rifles of the American Revolution: How Lancaster County Craftsmen Helped Win the War” opened in Historic Rock Ford’s John J. Snyder Jr. Gallery of Early Lancaster County Decorative Arts in Lancaster, Pa., on June 1. Guest curated by long rifle authority John Kolar in cooperation with Rock Ford curator Sarah Alberico and the exhibit design team of Carol Oldenburg, Stu Van Ormer and Catesby Gilbert, this exhibition presented visitors with a once-in-alifetime opportunity to view an outstanding grouping of Revolutionary War era rifles and military accessories such as powder horns, pistols and bayonets. It showcased approximately 38 long rifles, many crafted by Lancaster gunsmiths from Rock Ford’s collection and borrowed from museums and private collections from around the nation. A substantial number of these exceedingly rare weapons had not been on public view for many years. The exhibition therefore represented the first, and likely only, time that this material would be assembled in a single location to be accessible for public view.
In the words of Historic Rock Ford’s executive director Sam Slaymaker, “As the request for loans for the exhibit by John Kolar and our team were met with positive responses from so many generous lenders, we came to realize that we were on the cusp of something truly remarkable. This would be a once-in-a-lifetime exhibit that would include several true national treasures. Because of the rarity and fragility of the objects as well as lender time constraints, the exhibition would last only a relatively short period of five months. We therefore decided early on that it was important for us to find a way to permanently commemorate it so that it would continue to endure long after it had begun to fade from the memories of those who had
been fortunate enough to attend. We concluded that a full-color, beautifully illustrated companion book of the exhibit would be the best way to achieve this end.”
A generous grant from the Richard C. von Hess Foundation permitted Historic Rock Ford to produce such a book. “Successfully putting together all of the elements of the long rifle exhibit was a real challenge for our team,” mentioned Historic Rock Ford curator Sarah Alberico. “We strongly believed that producing a companion book was an important way to both celebrate and commemorate this achievement. However, at the outset, I don’t think that neither Sam nor I, having ever produced a book before, quite understood that this would be a substantial challenge in its own right.”
Alberico continued, “The rifles and objects to be exhibited arrived at the Snyder Gallery in May. We had a narrow window to have all of them professionally photographed in the gallery before completing assembly of the exhibit and opening on June 1. We retained the services of Erin Chance of New Leaf Photography who had done some exceptional photographic work for us before. She worked for three full days in the closed Snyder Gallery taking detailed photographs of all of the objects in the exhibit. We were all extremely pleased that her
resulting photographs are outstanding.”
Following photography and the final installation of the exhibit came weeks of writing by John Kolar. His text followed the storyboards for the exhibit, telling the story of the development of the Lancaster County long rifle, its significance as a work of decorative art as well as the importance of Lancaster County and its rifle makers in supplying American forces with these elegant but deadly weapons that played a key role in turning the tide of war in America’s favor. In contrast to some other long rifle books, Kolar’s goal was to produce a book which would be far more than a series of photos of rifles and their components accompanied by descriptive captions. The book would tell the story of the Lancaster long rifle and would include not only detailed photos of the exhibited rifles but also feature maps, period prints and work by military artists such as Don Troiani, C. Michael Dudash and Howard Pyle. Michael Abel of Lancaster, who has extensive experience in layout and design for books that have been published for other museums and to commemorate exhibits, “provided our team with outstanding guidance and excellent work,” according to Slaymaker.
Concerned that some prospective purchasers may suffer sticker-shock at the book’s $85 retail price, Sam Slaymaker feels compelled to explain the reason for
By John Kolar
this relatively high cost: “This 139-page, hardcover book is filled with a wealth of full-color illustrations and photographs. It is printed on a high-quality paper and was printed in a small, limited edition run rather than for the mass market, making the per volume production cost higher. It is important to note that we could have produced the book much less expensively if we had opted to have it printed in China as currently are many ‘coffee table’ art books. However, none of us felt that it would be appropriate to do this for a book about Lancaster County artisans who crafted rifles in support of the American Revolution, so we opted to have the book printed here in Lancaster instead. Although this resulted in a more expensive book, we believe that it will also provide a product of the highest quality and of more enduring value.”
The book was published in September as the exhibition was drawing to its close. “Even as the exhibit was closing, it seemed appropriate that its companion book was launching since it is through the book that its legacy will continue to endure,” said Alberico.
The book has been wellreceived by both general historians and long-rifle aficionados. This comment from a member of the Kentucky Rifle Association reflects others that have been received: “The book is gorgeous! A standing ovation to all who made it happen. As a one-time printer and a bibliophile, my assessment is that it could not have been better. Thank you for the fine book and all the hard work that went into producing it,” stated Dick Gadler.

By Peter Seibert
Okay, so I have a guilty pleasure to admit. I enjoy reading the boy books that I enjoyed as a boy. To be more specific, I love the “Hardy Boys.” Many a rainy or snowy day, trapped in the house as a boy, I recall my mother surprising me with a “Hardy Boys” detective book. And then she was irritated with me because I devoured it in about an hour and a half of steady reading. One talks about childhood influences, and I think many of us between 30 and 100 recall the “Hardy Boys.” Frank and Joe seemed to do everything
I got sick the other week and found myself wanting something banal and mindless to read. I reached over to the blue spines of my collection and started to read one. Okay, so I could figure the plot out pretty quickly, but it still took me back to my childhood.
Boy and girl books were a common phenomenon from the early 20th century that lives on to the present. For collectors, this poses a great opportunity to collect something that is familiar, has infinite printer’s variations and covers, and can be found everywhere. I have put together probably six sets of these in my book-reading career. I
There are several pricy collector’s guides to “Hardy Boy” books out there, and while I have never owned one, I would recommend them to the serious collector. Even a quick Wikipedia look at the history of the series reveals infinite variations and categories primed for an obsessive collector.
Long an advocate of how you engage young people in collecting, I think these books are a great place for a budding collection. They are easily available. I have rarely seen an antiques mall that does not have a bunch. There are common and rare examples. You can collect books with highly graphic dust jackets that will set you back a few bucks or you can buy reading copies for roughly $3 a piece. That is a lot of variant for a new collector
and something definitely to consider around the holidays.
In the meantime, it has been a long week, and I will go home, make myself a scotch tonight and settle down with “The Bombay Boomerang.”
“Born to collect” should be the motto of Peter Seibert’s family. Raised in Central Pennsylvania, Seibert has been collecting and writing about antiques for more than three decades. By day, he is a museum director and has worked in Pennsylvania, Wyoming, Virginia and New Mexico.Inaddition, headvises and consults with auction houses throughout the MidAtlantic region, particularly about American furniture and decorative arts. Seibert’s writings include books on photography, American fraternal societies and paintings. He and his family are restoring a 1905 arts and crafts house filled with years’ worth of antique treasures found in shops,co-opsandatauctions.
Wharton Esherick Museum Receives Save America’s Treasures Grant to Preserve Works on Paper Collection
The Wharton Esherick Museum (WEM) in Paoli, Pa., is excited to announce the receipt of a $130,000 Save America’s Treasures Grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Sciences. This matching grant will fund the conservation of the museum’s works on paper collection, including sketches, watercolors, and prints by the artist Wharton Esherick (1887-1970).
While Esherick is widely credited as the founder of the Studio Furniture Movement and primarily known for his wooden furniture and sculpture, the museum’s collection also includes many other examples of his artistic output, including prints, drawings, watercolors, notes and ephemera on paper. Rarely on view, these materials provide visual and material insight

The preservation is scheduled to be completed over a three-year period in partnership with the Conservation Center for Art and Historic Artifacts (CCAHA) and will involve a combination of conservation treatment and archival rehousing for 90 watercolors, 80 prints, six pastels, and numerous sketches, including a 36-foot “sketch scroll.”
“We are actively working on a multi-year planning process to transform the areas for collection storage, internal operations, and visitor engagement at the Wharton Esherick Museum as part of our proposed campus expansion plan,” shared WEM executive director Julie Siglin. “The Save America’s Treasures

Proceeds from the auction will benefit the dozens of Dallas-based nonprofits
supported by the Harry W. Bass Jr. Foundation, with a particular emphasis on early childhood education and literacy in Dallas, Texas.
“The Bass Trustees are thrilled with the results and grateful to the Heritage Auctions team for its outstanding execution of this sale” said David Calhoun, executive director of the Harry Bass Foundation. “It was an exciting event that far exceeded our expectation.”
Many lots in the auction set new auction records. The event generated perfect sell-through rates of 100 percent by value and by lots sold. The lineage of many of the coins in this auction can be traced to the heralded auction of Louis E. Eliasberg Sr.’s gold coin collection in 1982.
As a proof, the 1821 Capped Head Left half eagle is prohibitively rare; only two proof examples are known, one of which is included in the National Numismatic Collection
at the Smithsonian Institution.
“This is an extraordinary coin that brought an extraordinary result,” said Todd Imhof of Heritage Auctions.
“The fact that the proceeds

for more than 50 years and has been on display at the American Numismatic Association’s Edward C. Rochette Money Museum in Colorado Springs, Colo., since 2000. The foundation’s trustees voted earlier this year to sell the collection, which includes roughly 450 U.S. gold coins dating back to the late 1700s, as part of a plan to increase its annual giving from $2 million to at

The Stories They Tell: Silhouette Glass Pictures
Smack Dab In The Middle: Design Trends Of The Mid-20th Century
By Donald-Brian Johnson
Remember “Silhouettes?”
In that ’50s tune by The Rays, a fellow pays an evening visit to his girlfriend’s house, sees “two silhouettes on the shade,” and jumps to conclusions. He rushes in and discovers he’s on the wrong block. He then heads to the (hopefully) right house, ready to greet his gal and create two silhouettes all their own.
means of preserving a person’s image, so the term “silhouette” came into vogue for these profiles.
Silhouette pictures on glass took the technique a step further. Here, the “shadowettes” were either handpainted or silk-screened on the glass interior, facing out. The reverse-painted glass was then sealed to a colorful background illustration. This provided a vivid contrast and

An 1804 Capped Bust Right Eagle, PR63, the discovery coin for the issue, closed at $2.28 million. The 1804 Plain 4 eagle was struck for inclusion in the diplomatic presentation proof sets that also included the famous 1804 dollars. Initially collected as a regular proof of 1804, later considered a pattern, and finally recognized as a special striking, produced by the Mint to fulfill a specific government purpose, it is now one of the rarest and most valuable U.S. coins. The stories told by silhouette glass pictures are often just as involving (if less action-packed). The specific moments captured spark the imagination. often complemented the subjects depicted. An 18th-century courting couple is seen beside a tranquil lake, cowboys at their campfire are backlit by a radiant sunset. Sometimes, the background is less specific but equally eyecatching: pressed flowers, tinted foil, or even butterfly wings (real at first, then artificial after public outcry).
Most “true” silhouettes utilized only black paint, carrying on the cut-card tradition of profiled images presented in complete shadow.
Additional visual interest came with the introduction of convex glass. Curving provided a dimensionality impossible to achieve with flat glass. Shadow figures painted on the glass now appeared as separate from the background,

often casting their own shadows.
The heyday of silhouette glass pictures ran from the 1920s into the early 1960s. Since they were inexpensive to mass-produce, wholesale prices reflected this. (A price list from the 1940s touted “500 at 33 cents each.”) Thanks to the low cost, businesses ranging from grocery and hardware
stores to bars and funeral homes snapped them up as giveaways. So that customers would remember who was responsible for this generosity, the business name was emblazoned at the bottom, sometimes coupled with a poem or a motto. Silhouette pictures were also staples at dime stores and gift shops, often sold in pairs.
Some silhouette pictures came with “extras,” such as a working thermometer
incorporated into the artwork or a small calendar pasted on the back. Calendars that remain intact are one of the few definitive means of estimating a silhouette’s production date.
Guesswork is also involved in determining who manufactured a specific piece, as few firms tagged or stamped their silhouette work (One notable exception: Newton Mfg. of Newton, Iowa, which back-stamped their frames).
Silhouette glass pictures remain a very affordable collectible; many are in the $15-$40 range. And, as the most common size was 4by-6 inches, a wall can be filled with silhouettes, telling a multitude of stories, perhaps even that of “two silhouettes on the shade!”

The Wharton Esherick Museum (WEM) is the home and studio of Wharton Esherick (1887-1970), an artistic polymath and foundational figure in 20th-century contemporary craft and American Modern design. Wharton Esherick is widely credited as the founder of the Studio
Furniture Movement and was present at many of the landmark events that shaped the field of contemporary craft on an international level. Esherick worked primarily in wood and extended his unique forms to furniture, furnishings, interiors, buildings, and more. His motto, “If it isn’t fun, it isn’t worth doing,” is evident in the joyful expression of his work. A National Historic Landmark for Architecture, his hilltop studio/residence has been preserved much as it was when the artist lived and worked there.
In addition to private commissions, Esherick’s work is represented nationally in the permanent collections of more than 20 major museums and galleries, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Museum of Fine Art, Boston, and the Renwick Gallery of the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C.
