“Action”-Packed Heritage Auction Starring Superman’s Debut And Bound Volumes Of Earliest Batman Books Slated For Nov. 18 to 21 How does an auction house follow up the sale of the world’s most expensive comic book? By holding one featuring the world’s most important comic book. From Thursday to Sunday, Nov. 18 to 21, Heritage Auctions will hold its latest Comics and Comic Art Signature Auction, which features
among its myriad highlights a copy of the 1938 Action Comics No. 1, which marked the debut appearance of Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster’s “Superman.” Copies of the landmark scarcity seldom surface. Heritage has offered only three complete copies of Action Comics No. 1 over the last five years, which makes the appearance of this restored CGC Apparent Fine+ 6.5 copy notable. There are 72 copies of comicdom’s most coveted and collected story in CGC’s Census Report, in any condition. “Superman” is joined in this auction by the other half of DC’s world’s finest duo, “Batman,” whose 1940 bow in his own title is among the extraordinary 354 offerings from the Promise Collection, a collection of Golden Age comic books in pristine condition assembled by a young boy who grew up, went to fight the war in Korea and never This is Frank Brunner’s signed original cover art returned. for Doctor Strange No. 1, published in 1974. Auctions vice president Barry Sandoval. “Those are almost unfathomable numbers for 1940s comics, when very few made an effort to preserve comics in pristine condition, if they kept them at all.” Batman’s solo-title debut is also featured in an extraordinary collection the likes of which has been seldom seen at Heritage. The auction features three bound volumes of Batman comics beginning with 1940s very first issue, itself one of the hobby’s most significant and treasured titles, where “Joker” and “Catwoman” make their first appearances. Oil Paintings By Canadian Artists Score Top Honors
An oil-on-board landscape painting by “Group of Seven” artist Alfred Joseph Casson (Canadian, 1898-1992), titled “Outside Algonquin Park,” artist signed, realized $59,000. many unique examples, as well as collectible firearms by Colt, Remington, Stevens and others. Also included was artwork by the abovenamed Canadian artists and others. The sale was complemented by a select offering of wonderful Canadian and American furniture and fine and decorative art. “From firearms to fine art, this diverse sale drew out collectors of all stripes, and they didn’t forget their wallets,” said Ethan Miller of Miller & Miller. “Firearms that Don Blyth paid 50 cents, two dollars and five dollars for in the 1950s were bringing five figure sums. The winners were grateful. Days before his death, Don shuddered at the thought of his objects being relegated to the darkness of a museum’s archives. ‘Let the people enjoy them,’ he told us.” The auction attracted 546 bidders who placed 9,540 bids in a sale that grossed $803,993. One hundred percent of the lots sold, and one-third of the lots exceeded the high estimate. All prices include an 18-percent buyer’s premium. A large watercolor and ink
folk art fraktur-type painting by Anna Weber (1814-88), signed in fraktur writing and dated 1870, the design, executed in blues, red, yellow and brown, consisting of 11 pairs of birds, each pair a different type, changed hands for $27,140. Also, a taxidermied male passenger pigeon, cased in glass and secured to a wood branch perch, went for $10,620. Passenger pigeons went extinct ca. 1914. The example in the sale was from ca. 1900. There were two paintings by Joseph Swift (Canadian, 1832-89) in the auction, both of them equestrian-themed and both with estimates of $12,000-$15,000. One was of a horse named “Manfred,” which trotted away for $16,250. The other was of the horse “Royal Exchange” and realized $15,340. Smith spent much of his artistic time filling a growing need for recording prize-winning animals that were often shown at the Toronto Exhibition in Canada for proud owners in the late 1800s.
Homer Ransford Watson (Canadian, 1855-1936) was also represented twice in the sale, once with a large, 34-by-44inch unframed oil-on-board of a pioneer (or farmer) traveling along a trail by horse-drawn carriage, titled “The Hayrack” ($12,980), the other a 14-by-22inch outdoor scene of a boy closing the gate on his flock of sheep, artist signed ($11,800). Watson’s paintings captured the industrious endeavors of pioneers and farmers. A Duffner & Kimberly table lamp, made in America in the 1920s and featuring a Nasturtiums floral pattern mosaic 20-inch diameter glass shade on a solid bronze base in the thistle pattern, with cutout heat cap and bronze finial, fetched $23,600. Also, an exceptional musical bracket clock by William Vale London (Finsbury), made in England between 1804 and 1824, having a bracket movement rear plate with filigree, 12 bells and four musical selections, made $14,160.
Measuring 18-by-14 inches, framed, the watercolor and ink folk art fraktur-type painting by Anna Weber (1814-88), signed in fraktur writing, dated 1870, brought $27,140.

Original, vibrant oil paintings by Canadian artists Alfred Joseph Casson (1898-1992) and Alexander Young Jackson (18821974) were the top achievers in a Firearms, Sporting and Canadiana Auction held Oct. 9 by Miller & Miller Auctions Ltd. The two paintings combined for nearly $100,000 (all prices reported are in Canadian dollars). The oil-on-board landscape painting by “Group of Seven” artist Alfred Joseph Casson sailed past its $30,000-$40,000 estimate to finish at $59,000. The work, titled “Outside Algonquin Park,” depicted a bucolic scene near the village of Whitney and was done in 1940, at the height of the artist’s career. Casson focused much of his work on rural villages and towns in Canada. The oil-on-board country scape by “Group of Seven” founding member Alexander Young Jackson was similar in style to the Casson work, except there were no buildings in the Jackson painting, as there were in Casson’s. The piece topped its $30,000 high estimate, selling for $38,350. It was signed lower left, titled and dated, “Oat Field Harrington, Quebec, Sept. 1966, A.Y. Jackson.” The auction had two main collections, the Don and Joyce Blyth firearms collection, and the decoy and fishing collections of Marty Osler. The fishing collection included a select offering of fine reels and rods, many by Hardy Brothers of England. The decoy collection was mostly Canadian and included many fine examples by Carl O. Rankin, Frank Dolsen, Billy Ellis and Ken Anger. The Blyth collection featured Ontario firearms, including

When the calendar turns to November, one major holiday comes to mind, Thanksgiving. Sometimes decorating for Thanksgiving can get shortened or forgotten between the Halloween and Christmas celebrations. As a national holiday, it is a day of giving thanks for blessings from the preceding year. Today, we celebrate Thanksgiving with family, friends, and food. For many, the best time of the day is the turkey dinner. In some households, the turkey has been replaced with Italian dishes, fish dishes or vegetarian dishes. It does not matter what the main course is, it is all about the people present. With the supply chain of many goods backlogged at the nation’s major ports, the dealers at the Historic Burlington Antiques and Art Emporium wish to remind readers antiques and collectibles make great holiday gifts and are also great to decorate and use at the holidays. It seems possible if certain merchandise is simply too difficult to find or even get, some people may discover the joys of buying something with character that is antique or vintage. Antique co-ops are one answer to this issue. The Emporium in Burlington City, N.J., is a 1 5,000-square-foot building

Their work transformed with the First World War, as did that of many of their peers, including Christopher Richard Wynne Nevinson, the only British Futurist, who deviated from the movement to underscore the horrors of mechanized warfare. In reaction to the war, many artists renounced or modified the abstract visual languages they had previously embraced, finding that their relationship to such styles, and the modern world in general, had fundamentally changed. Rather than championing a complete break with modernity, these artists pursued different subjects and approaches to forge a new understanding of it. Some, such as Paul Nash, left urban centers and embraced subjects that appear both timeless and suggestive of the trauma of war. Edward Wadsworth, for his part, abandoned the nonobjective, geometric abstraction he had used as a Vorticist. In his images of modern industrialized sites and the related destruction of the landscape, he employed a language that was raw, unsentimental, and more figurative than before. In addition to depicting the landscape’s transformation through industrial waste and the expansion of cities and suburbs into rural spaces, artists, such as Nevinson, captured strikes and uprisings, which occurred with greater

frequency and on a larger scale as the economic depression progressed. At London’s Grosvenor School of Modern Art, founded in October 1925 and in operation until 1940, professors and students sought to expand the possibilities for art education and the methods for art production. Grosvenor School quickly became more than just an art center, evolving into a term applied to a group of artists who studied printmaking with Claude Flight. These artists, like their teacher, refined the color linocut technique to produce dynamic images of everyday life. Often made with inexpensive items, these relief prints portrayed scenes of labor as well as recreational activities, such as visits to the funfairs, sporting events, and games, along with the hustle and bustle of modern metropolitan life. Women were key figures in the Grosvenor School, which admitted a substantial number of female students and allowed equal access to classes. In addition to prominent Grosvenor School artists such as Sybil Andrews and Lill Tschudi, the exhibition will include pieces by Dorothy Burroughes, Anna Findlay, Ursula Fookes, and Edith Lawrence, among others. Also included in the exhibition will be posters commissioned by Frank Pick, the powerful transportation executive and patron of modern art and design who had the goal of promoting the London Transport and its services. The modernist styles found in these posters had great influence and inspired the art critic and Grosvenor School instructor Frank Rutter to declare in 1933 that “The art galleries of the people are not in Bond Street, but are to be found in every railway station.”
Featured artists here will include Edward McKnight Kauffer (an American who worked in London and was considered the preeminent poster artist in Britain during the interwar period) and Andrew Power, an alias adopted by Grosvenor School artists Sybil Andrews and Cyril Power for London Transport commissions. About Leslie and Johanna Garfield Leslie and Johanna Garfield acquired their first print in the mid-1950s, a German Expressionist woodcut from 1912 by Eric Heckel, and by the early 1980s, the couple began collecting works made in the interwar period by imaginative British printmakers, thus pioneering this focus in collecting. Their committed, independent vision led them to assemble an exceptional collection that features an impressive variety of techniques, such as linocut, etching, dry point, woodcut, lithography, and wood engraving, and that includes sketchbooks, illustrated books, posters, printmaking tools, and scholarly materials. The Met’s acquisition of more than 700 works from the Garfield collection establishes the museum as a leading institution for early to mid-20th century British modernist prints and drawings. It marks one of the largest acquisitions ever made by the Department of Drawings and Prints and was generously enabled by the Garfields as a part gift, part purchase. Credits “Modern Times: British Prints, 1913–1939” is organized by Jennifer Farrell, curator in the department of drawings and prints. The museum’s website is wealth of information. Winterthur founder H. F. du Pont (1880–1969) was born and spent his life on the estate, so the holidays were always a memorable time to celebrate with family and entertain friends. Rooms on the tour will re-create the parlor where the du Pont family and their guests opened gifts on Christmas Day and the dining room where they enjoyed Christmas dinner. Two vignettes depict New Year’s calling, a custom still practiced by the du Ponts. Every Jan. 1, the women of the extended family gathered in hostess groups at various houses while the men traveled in groups to call upon them, bearing small gifts. One display represents a calling from the 1890s, while a second re-creates one from the 1940s. The decorated trees on view include the renowned 14-foot dried-flower tree, an
evergreen decorated with hydrangeas, yarrow, statice, globe amaranth, and other flowers and, new to the tour this year, a second breathtaking tree designed with dried flowers. Other trees are inspired by areas of the garden such as the March Bank and Azalea Woods. In celebration of the upcoming exhibition “Jacqueline Kennedy and H. F. du Pont: From Winterthur to the White House,” opening May 7, 2022, a decorated tree re-creates the one displayed at the White House in 1962, created by the first lady. With the theme of a “Children’s Christmas,” it featured candles, birds, snowflakes, angels, tiny twig stars, small wrapped gifts, reindeer, candy canes, stuffed animals, and a model PT-109 boat commemorating the president’s heroic deed during World War II. The trees on the Yuletide Tour also complement the exhibition “Outside In: Natureinspired Design at Winterthur,” on view through Jan. 2. The visually eclectic and immersive exhibition explores the connection to nature that is evident everywhere at Winterthur and which greatly influenced H. F. du Pont’s design aesthetic, one that has inspired other designers ever since.
Winterthur is located on Route 52, six miles northwest of Wilmington, Del., and five miles south of U.S. Route 1. Information about the Yuletide Tour is online at www.winterthur.org/holidays.
